I'm by the beach for The Great Escape and I'm joined by Ether and Paddy from Westside Cowboy. How are you? Doing well, thank you for having us here. How's your experience in Brighton so far? It's been really good, thanks. We've played here a couple of times but...
Yeah, we played at the Hope and Ruin last night and it was really, really good. It was a bit of a hectic day because we had car trouble and stuff getting down from Manchester, so it felt nice to cap it off with that, I guess. I did try and get in, but there were queues round the block. Well, we were playing the Nice One showcase, who are a lovely, lovely label, and I think
I think it was that busy all day. So they've had a bit of a belter on the first day, which is nice. Yeah. Bouncers were going crazy. Yeah, they were. Very enthusiastic about their job. Have you managed to catch any bands whilst you've been down here? Or is there anyone you want to see? Not so far, but there's loads we want to see. Um,
Punchbag are the best band in the world. Go and see Punchbag if you want to be a happy person. That feels like it doesn't make sense. Punchbag and then happy. They're amazing. Mould. Yeah, we're big Mould fans. Always on in the car. Um...
martial arts our practice room bodies yeah TTSFU our housemate Deke plays her plays drums for her she's a good friend it's a good list I feel like you've given me a strong list tell me a bit about you guys because I've been playing you on the Introducer mixtape for a few months now maybe longer how did you guys meet? me Aoife and Ruben we met
like first day of freshers week we all lived in like the same halls of residence and then me and Ruben quite quickly started a band that was like very experimental and noisy and we kind of burnt ourselves out being weird Aoife was at college as well but she does a classical degree so like we always would go to gigs together but we like didn't jam really or anything and then we just
through time really got into like folk music and like Americana and I don't know more traditional things and for a laugh we just Jimmy one day he works at the local guitar shop and was like should we start a band called West Side Cowboy and we didn't have any songs or anything and it was just playing like country songs that like because we like punk music and stuff and indie we just gradually got louder and louder and now we're here so that was maybe like September 2020
three 2023 so yeah i feel like it's been quite a fast rise for you guys because obviously you're already working with nice swan i know that you recorded with lewis from english teacher how did all these things kind of come about just like pinball really i don't know we just got ridiculously lucky and we're very appreciative for all of it and stuff yeah i think we've just been in like the right places at the right times
We work very hard but I think loads of people, like everyone that wants to do music works really hard because you want to do well and you love playing music. I think a lot of it is down to just like catching people's eyes but because they've been in rooms at certain times, in places at certain times and we've like...
We're waiting for the luck to go because it's felt a bit too like someone's doing something. Yeah, we were a little bit nervous for this weekend, to be honest. Why? Because people have just been really nice about it and we're like, oh, we've got to actually go and play to these people now and they can decide whether they actually like us now. I don't know.
I'm very excited to see you play for us on the BBC Introducing Six Music Showcase at Paganini Ballroom. Opening it as well, I think it's going to be a busy one. Yeah, hopefully. Hopefully and equally not. We love playing to people, but it's a bit mental. We'll play to, I don't know, our animals or whatever. We're just happy that people like the music, I guess, if they even do that.
Hello. Thank you everyone for coming. We're so grateful for people being in the audience. Where's the person you made me? Wrapped up in a pavement. There's a person who I work. They do already. Thank you. It's the BBC introducing Mixtape. It's Emily Pill being with you. I'm at Paganini Ballroom and I'm with Kay from The Nun. How are you? Hello, I'm very good. How are you? I'm good, thanks. The last time I saw you was when you played at Yes in Manchester. Yeah, that's right. How was the rest of the tour? It was amazing, yeah. Really good tour. It was a short one. I think we did like five or six shows in as many days. But it was really good to just get back on the road playing our own shows. Yeah. But yeah, good turnout. Good.
Gained a few new fans, sold some merch. It was good. I love that you have to try and fit your tours around teaching schedules. Yes. Yeah, I'm a teacher, so all our tours have kind of got to be
In school holidays, which does mean I don't get holidays, but, you know, it's worth it. Well, thanks so much for playing on stage tonight, the Introducing Six Music Showcase. What do you think of the venue? It's pretty grand, isn't it? It's amazing, yeah. I feel like I'm in a Tipton Hotel. Remember Zack and Cody? It's really, it's like, yeah, really grand. We're about to ruin it.
Yeah, it's going to be very, very loud. Talk to me about the new single, mainly about the fact that it's on Spotify, because none of your music has been on Spotify at all. Yeah, well...
So up to this point, we kind of have put out a couple of EPs and they've been exclusively on Bandcamp. And that just kind of made sense for us as a band, like the kind of music we make and the audience that we were looking to, you know, win over with the music. Very much music fans, so people that would, you know, not hesitate to throw you a couple of quid for it and they'd engage with things like Bandcamp and like Featured and things like that. So that worked for us. But now, like, you know, we're kind of looking to get a little bit
Yeah.
You don't have to pay for it. Yeah. I just want it on all of my gym playlists. Oh, yeah? Yeah. I feel like it'll make me run faster. Almost definitely. What's next for you guys then? Obviously, you dropped this new single. Is that part of another EP? Have you got an album? What's going on? Well, we're going to release some physical copies. In a few weeks, we're just dropping a 7-inch. So, At Hope, which is the single that we've just released, is going to be on that. And then we've got a B-side called In Civic Pride.
So that'll be the first bit of physical material that we've released. And then we're just going to crack on with writing. We want to draw a line under the EPs and come up with something a bit bigger. And then just play more shows. Maybe get out of the country, who knows? Yeah. I'm so excited to see you guys tonight. Every time I see you, you're amazing. Thank you so much for playing our stage. And please release an album soon. Okay, we'll try. Thanks for having us. I want to say thank you to BBC for introducing the six music...

Fuzz Lightyear, well Varun and Ben from Fuzz Lightyear, so happy to have you on our BBC Introducing stage. Thank you for having us, always a pleasure. You're fresh off the stage, you're still quite sweaty. Did you enjoy it? Yeah, it was great. It was really energetic. It was just such a big room as well, it's nice here and everything kind of like...
really hold. Yeah. We played after the nun as well who are like friends of ours and I think it just made us all way more excited to like, I don't know, just give it some. It got me a bit anxious seeing the nun. I was like, damn, we need to be like that good. Yeah. It's crazy. We were. Yeah, we definitely were. Yeah, you absolutely smashed it. I saw you actually, I saw you Varun watching the nun. Oh yeah. You look like you're having a great time and I saw you Ben watching West Side Cowboy. Had you seen them before? I'd seen them a couple times at
at Belgrave in Leeds and they stayed around my house actually because my housemate Lewis recorded their single and Lewis off of English teacher Lewis Whiting off of English teacher the Mercury Prize winning Lewis Whiting but they were lovely they make really really good curries as well
What's the plan for the rest of your great escape? Because obviously you were here yesterday, you played the Nice Swan stage. How was that? Was there anyone you saw there that you really enjoyed? We played after Jagged Baptist Club, who we're doing a few dates with next week. They're another nice swan band who...
us sick. Yeah, awesome. Yeah, but after that we kind of just went and sat by the sea. Yeah. It wasn't that we didn't want to see anyone, we were just so tired. Yeah, and also you don't get a lot of seaside in Leeds, so try to make the most of that. Yeah. You've got a busy few days though, because you're playing with Adult DVD back in Leeds, and then you're playing for my BBC Introducing Leeds and Sheffield show on Saturday. Yep, in Sheffield at Get Together. Yes. So...
Are you happy about that? Yeah, it's a nice busy couple of days. Couldn't be happier, to be fair. Having a nice big tour post always feels good and I think we're the kind of band where it's better to see us live. Great on record, definitely better live. That's how you want it to be though, isn't it? Yeah, definitely. Rock and roll. Rock and roll. When are we going to get new music from you? Soon, next month actually. Sometime mid-June we're going to start putting out some more music with Nice One. Are we getting any more remixes? No.
Yes, sir. Yay. Need to confirm it for sure, but should have some stuff from MS Paint, who are an American hardcore band, Black Fondue, Turn Spit, who are like a Leeds group who have not put music out, and Buffy, who's someone from Bristol, who is maybe the best musician. Best musician in Leeds. Yeah. Every time one of us goes to see her, our group chat is just the person seeing her messaging being like...
This is the coolest stuff. Yeah, we need to do this. Just fire emojis. Yeah, basically. So, yeah, some of our favourite people who we've played with remixing us. Ace, it's always a pleasure to see you. I love getting all of your musical recommendations as well. It's really nice. And thanks so much for playing on stage and I'll see you on Saturday. Thank you for having us. See you on Saturday. One, two, three. Season of it.
Nice reflection Cheers, we've been forced out here
It's Fuzz Lightyear performing live on the BBC Introducing Stage. It's the Sixth Music Showcase. It's Emily Pilbeam. We are going to be playing our Welly set from the BBC Introducing Stage, which I have to say was unreal. And I'm with Mr Welly now. How is that for you? Thank you for Mr Welly. That's how I prefer to be addressed. That was fab. It was really, really nice. It's a very old room with proper Wetherspoons carpets and old balconies and stuff. It
It was good is my answer. I mean, I love seeing you live because you always bring the best energy. Very much. How do you do that? Because it's a long day. A lot of fruit shoots, lots of iron brew, lots of Buddhist meditation. Nice. Lots of... I don't believe you at all. No. It's now like Pavlovian. Like we hear like the intro music or something like, oh, got to like... Not that we're all like horribly sort of...
dour all the time yeah the match of the day theme tune yeah that was good one of the runners said you can't have because usually we come on to Amarillo obviously because of like rights reasons and that we could come on to that so we said we were like going through like could we do EastEnders could we do Question of Sport and then we settled on Match of the Day which I was very happy with I actually think EastEnders would have been class I think it would have been yeah because I think maybe it would have lent some drama to the gig we would have had maybe a punch up or I would have fallen in love and gone Alfie or something that would have been good yeah
The last time I saw you actually was the first time I ever saw you at the BBC Introducing Stage at Leeds Festival. It's been popping off for you since then. You released your debut album. Yes. How are you feeling about that? Really good. It feels like it's been written for about six years, which is surprising. So it feels more like a finished line.
but i hope people don't act like we're being like no album one now we're moving on time for album two but we're already trying to get new stuff out because we've been gigging that same set that we were doing up till the album came out for four years so we probably will listen to that and they sort of delve into this whole story about like within this narrative through the suburbs going home for a long weekend um but i hope people listen to it and go i hope there's something that they look for in album two yeah i wonder what they'll do next yeah and don't go wow
Never again. I'm sure that's not going to be the case. I was going to ask you, actually, what is your favourite Welly lyric? Because mine is, I'm going to get it completely wrong now. What is it? My pockets must have holes in...
I've got it wrong. No, that's fine. Right, how does it end? I know it. My focus must have holes because I don't know where it all goes. That's it, yeah. That's such a good lyric. Thank you very much. I like it when Joe says there's a break in So Got The Culture. And So Got The Culture is a song about people going on gap years and being like, oh, rah, like, I taught the locals how to smoke rollies and stuff like that.
Well, so Joe does this line where he goes, I won't say the name of the lager because of impartiality, but Joe goes, what do you mean you don't sell lager? I thought it was Spanish. That is a good one, yeah. It's a lager that isn't Spanish. It's a very British lager. Say what it is. It is. Carling. But other brands are available.
Thank you so much for playing. Sorry, I'm toeing the line so carefully. I just want a job. Thank you so much for playing our stage. It's a pleasure to see you, as always. Thank you very much for having us. When are you next on tour? It's the end of the year. Yes, yeah, we're doing a big one. We've got tickets to sell at Scala, so please be listening to this. We're doing Scala in October, and currently we're going to have to get all my family from Clitheroe on a big coach.
if anyone's going to come do them like sort of a half price deal tuck in some dinner yeah we just did a seaside tour which was fun we just played seaside towns or it's honestly just had a coast like Harley Paul or Dundee where we sort of yeah weren't too strict on the seaside brief but this time it's just a normal tour it's a normal tour so it's going to be good I'll make sure I head on down yeah thank you so much for playing we're going to play out some live music for you now to end the show excellent on the introducing mixtape this is Welly performing live lots of love
