BBC Radio. BBC Radio. BBC. Six Music. Right now, it's the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape with Emily Pilbeam. Yes, it is the BBC Introducing Mixtape. It is Emily Pilbeam with you on Six Music, live from Glastonbury Festival. I'm backstage at the BBC Introducing Stage. We've got loads of live music to play for you on the show.

And we're going to kick things off with the first performer on the BBC Introducing Stage of the whole weekend. I'll be chatting to Fiona Lee all about her Glastonbury experience after this. Fiona Lee, live from Glastonbury. The same old fight, the same old dispute The mirror's right, what would it feel like to be her? And it's taken all the impossibilities

Listen, you shouldn't have to say more than straight up nothing To make me feel good To make me feel good About myself 'Cause it's not your Responsibility, no To sweeten me up Or shake me down When I'm in disbelief But it's not right To feel so By my skin

Bad man I stumble But it's taking out The impossibility But listen You shouldn't have to say More than a stray or nothing To make me feel good To make me feel good About myself Cause it's not your Responsibility No Just sweeten me up

Or shake me down when I'm in disbelief Considering youth and considering me We're all, consider my envy Consider my jealousy or spew

That is Fiona Lee performing live on the BBC Introducing Mixtape on Six Music and I'm joined by Fiona Lee now. How are you feeling? Amazing. Yeah, that was such a good gig. Really, really good. I remember being there when you got told at Maid of Ale by Jericho Keys, who's obviously supported you on Introducing for such a long time. I cried and then I think you cried.

I literally, like, it took a while to process, but then five minutes later, I was jumping up and down and then just, like, burst into tears. Yeah. I mean, you've been making music and playing for such a long time. It must feel like a massive reward, I guess. Yeah, it's crazy. It has taken a long time, but it just...

you know, good things happen, you know, if you really put the effort and the time in. So, yeah, it feels amazing. Yeah. And you've just been on the road with Seamath as well. What's that been like? She seems like a right laugh. Oh my God. She's wicked. Honestly, like the entire band are just the loveliest people. Yeah, that was so much fun. It was her Glastonbury warm-up tour. And...

Such a good experience and lovely people to be hanging out with and lovely crowds as well. They've got really nice fans, so yeah. I imagine Seamount's quite good with giving you words of wisdom as well. Has she given you any hints and tips? Well, yeah. To be fair, the first time we met, when we said goodbye, she said to me, she said, remember, you're a slide-eaver and you've never done anything wrong in your life. And I was like, you know what? I'm going to stick with that. Yeah, too right. You need that on a T-shirt, I think. Right? I actually might make that myself. LAUGHTER

So what's the plan for you then? Because obviously you played on the Thursday, the first performer on the Introducing Stage. Are you here all weekend? Who are you going to see? Yeah, I'm here until Monday. Yeah, yeah. So, I mean, a big one for me is Alanis Morissette. I really want to see Loyal Kana, Ray, Dochi, and Beth McCarthy's obviously playing right now. I'd love to catch the end of her set, but...

Yeah, just very excited. I can just kind of relax now and have a good time. Yeah, you've got the best slot doing it so early. So what's the plan for you then in the future? I saw on your Instagram you're moving back up north. Is that for writing? What's going on? You know what? It is mainly for writing. I think I kind of struggled a little bit writing in London and

But when I've gone up north, I do write better. Just being in my old bedroom, like it really works. So I'm just going to do that for a bit and yeah, record some more music and yeah, hopefully get a live band together as well. That's the plan. Well, I'll let you go and watch the rest of Beth McCarthy and we'll enjoy the rest of your set. Thanks so much. Thank you so much for having me. Thank you. She gave me love Is it an alternative?

I didn't say to her what I always think. I've been here longer than I was hoping. I'm going crazy, feels like I'm losing it all. In the kitchen again, she's drinking her coffee. We're talking, I pretend.

That I can handle anything But I wanna feel like a baby I could die contently In her arms of safety Take the pressure away To just a baby and a mother There is nothing stronger than Something so delicate

Something like loving She is over Disgusting The underpaid And I doubt the children Even know her real name She likes to complain And it's fair enough Cause she never stops I hate my lip To let it bleed Cause some days It's even

But she still picks me up and saves me every week And we're in the kitchen again She's drinking her coffee We're talking and pretend That I can handle Feel like a baby I could die contently

I'm sinking in a storm

I'll tell you when the coast is clear. Don't wait for me to run. And I feel his eyes are everywhere. Sticking to my skin. But it doesn't come off with soap and water. This mess that I'm in. Cause I believe in everything he said. Yeah, I believe.

When he told me love was dead and I believed him. And all the lies he sold and I believed in him. And he hurt by the throat. Mother, get me out of here. I'm drowning in my bed. The floods are strong and choice is clear.

Looks like it's had times ahead. I missed you more and all you want. You're a wholehearted lover. But it doesn't come off with soap and water. All of this grief that I'm found. Cause I believed him in everything he said. Yeah, I believed him.

When he told me love was dead and I believed him And all the lies he sold and I believed him When he had me by the throat and I believed him Why he kept me by his side and I believed him He'd given me this kind of life and I believed him He said that I was free and

Thank you so much.

That is Fiona Lee performing live on the BBC Introducing Stage at this year's Glastonbury Festival, the first performer of the weekend. But before that, we had a very special treat to open the Introducing Stage. We had a special live audience version of Sidetracked, the podcast on BBC Sounds presented by Nick Grimshaw and Annie McManus.

And I thought I would grab Nick Grimshaw and just find out how it went. BBC Radio 6 Music. The BBC Music Introducing Mixtape with Emily Pilbeam. I'm backstage at the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury. It's a lovely day so far. The sun is shining and I'm sat on a bench with the lovely Nick Grimshaw who opened the BBC Introducing Stage. How are you feeling?

I'm feeling good. I mean, yeah, like that we opened the BBC Introducing stage. Yeah, me and Annie did sidetracked on the stage and we were walking around yesterday at the festival where I was and someone came over to me and she said, really looking forward to your performance with Annie. I was like, I don't know if it's going to be a performance. We're going to be sat in a chair having a gossip. It was so nice to do. It was so fun. There were so many people there for, what was it, midday on Thursday? Yeah, I mean...

respectfully to us I don't think anything else was on but I couldn't believe everyone turned up for it how was it doing it in front of a live audience because it's the first time you've done it in front of a live audience isn't it yeah that was our very first live podcast that we've ever done it's the first time we've done it at Glastonbury but it was mega it was really really fun and everyone sort of went with us and it was vaguely planned but not

Really? Like we had, you know, some people in the audience who I'd say hi to. But that was it. But yeah, it was a nice way to kick off the day for sure. When I was walking past, I heard you saying that someone was there to celebrate their wedding in the audience. Yeah. So we just met someone called Charles and Charlie. They just got married up in the healing fields and then they came to Sidetracked for their reception. And they were in full wedding attire with a wedding cake that she'd brought from Leeds.

Full wedding cake. From Leeds. So we got like a techie guy on stage because we were like, has anyone got a knife? Obviously not. And the techie guy was like, I do because of the techie work I'm doing. So we cut their wedding cake with, yeah, like a roadies pen knife on stage. That's one to remember, isn't it? Would you get married at Glastonbury? I suggested that to my boyfriend. He went, not chic. LAUGHTER

it not he went no some of my friends got married in the healing fields a couple of years ago I was very emotional but I can't tell if that was the hangover or not yeah find like anything emotional in a couple of days Emily so Glastonbury then you're here all weekend obviously doing loads of stuff with six music who are you mainly hoping to see obviously it's so difficult to plan but is there one artist you really want to see I'm really looking forward to Marie Davidson tonight I love

her. Amal and the Sniffers, Kneecap, I really want to see on West Halls. I really want to see The Prodigy because that was the first gig I ever went to when my cousin took me when I was about 10. I can't believe you haven't said Busta Rhymes. Oh my god, and Busta Rhymes. Busta Rhymes I'm so excited about. So excited about Busta.

And the BBC Introducing stage, are you going to be sticking about? Because there's lots of amazing artists that we play a lot on Six playing. Absolutely, yeah. Lambrini Girls, I would love to see. I've never seen them and love the record, actually. And Jacob Alon is someone that we saw. We went to see them do a tiny gig in maybe September of last year.

and it's a really small place in Hackney and then I saw them play a slightly bigger show in East London and it'd be great to see them on a festival stage because I love them and I love the record so much in Limerence so yeah I'll be here for them for sure. Yeah I think they're playing on the Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening which feels like a perfect time for Jacob Allon to be playing so let's get some Jacob Allon on now shall we? Let's do it and then I'll see you here on Sunday with fear and anxiety in our brains.

That is the gorgeous sounds of Jacob Alon performing live on the BBC Introducing stage. You are listening to the BBC Introducing mixtape with me, Emily Pilbeam, at Glastonbury Festival. I've got some live music to play for you from Lemfreck. Going to be chatting with him as well, but first let's hear some live music from Lemfreck. Flipping, drowning, all the above, you know.

Of course I'm happy Now you've removed the soul It's cute the way we Can't seem to let it go So, yes or no? Hurts around me I think I'm moving It's outstanding The gaps are here to show I am rocking I'm rocking to and fro So, I guess that's a hobby

That is Lem Freck performing live on the BBC Introducing stage. You're listening to the Introducing mixtape on Six Music. And I am with Lem Freck now. I can't believe we've not met before because I've been playing you on Radio 1 and Six Music for a while. I actually think you gave me my first ever Radio 1 play, which is incredible. But yeah, I think you did actually, yeah.

We've played you on the Six Music mixtape a lot. I love what you're doing. It's been so amazing to see you perform on the Introducing Stage at Glastonbury. How was that performance for you? Incredible. Absolutely insane. Just being able to look out and be like, oh my gosh. And seeing my friends there was the nuts part. Some of the boys from home. So yeah, it was special. It was special. How was it representing Wales on the Introducing Stage?

Outstanding. Honestly, I think the Welsh vibe, the Welsh scene at the moment is so special. Something really special is happening. The fact that I'm the one that gets to tell that story is special as well. I was looking on your Instagram the other day and I saw that you'd... I think you put a post out about playing Glastonbury and that you'd taped Glastonbury performances onto a DVD for years and then you didn't buy a ticket because you wanted to play it?

Honestly, they say as an artist you've got to be delusional and that's the level of delusion that is needed. I don't even know where it came from. I used to watch it all the time with my parents. Obviously it was such an important part of me growing up, just watching live shows and studying the greats basically. And then when I got old enough to buy a ticket, I was like, you know what, I'm not buying one. The first time I go, I'm going to play it. So yeah, it was so special.

Were there any particular performances you were watching when you were younger that kind of either made you want to be a performer or made you want to play Glastonbury? It's a really weird one, but I saw the Jay-Z one after all the discourse and then he came out and kind of

just flipped everything on his head. It was incredible. Little Sims, hers was special. Actually, I remember when Loyal Khanna did his first, not his introducing one, but the first one on, I think it was on the other stage, and that was nuts.

I think that would be from a British artist. That's probably one of my favourites at the moment. Does that mean you're going to go see Loyal Khanna this weekend? 100%. He's come such a long way and his stuff is so special and heartfelt and I want to be there to see that.

Is there anyone else on your to-see list this weekend? Yeah, Lola Young. I want to see that. I think she's really special. Obviously, everyone wants to see Lola Young. And then a rogue one. I want to check out the 1975. I want to see what that's like live. They're such an outfit now that I'm like, oh, I need to see what the hype's about. But they're going to smash it, right? So we've had a few EPs from you. When's the record? When's the album? Oh.

when labels come running? No, I think very, very soon. I still got a couple of things I want to say on the short side before I dive into one, but I think soon. I'm really enjoying making music at the moment. I've been a lot more collaborative where previously I was always on my own in a dark room in front of a computer.

drag some of my friends along. So, yeah, I'm looking forward to the stuff that's coming out next. Well, thank you so much for playing our stage. I'm so excited to see what's next for you. And, yeah, should we get some more Lemfrec live music on? I think we should. Like, we've got nothing else to do. We might as well, right? They all know I'm a nuisance Got your whole clique in a nuisance I know they feel sick when I'm loosened I do not miss and it's gruesome Fact, and then flip when I choose on

BBC Radio 6 Music. The BBC Music Introducing Mixtape with Emily Pilbeam. Hush, hush, hush, hush. Our ship cries, ship cries. Our ship cries, our ship bleeds. The gates, the phoenix lips, bend through my eyes. They said it's all those lies. But then you go. This drawer, you shatter that scissor, pull my chest. Move it, cover the eyes.

You never looked at me like that You never looked at me like that Looked at me like that You never looked at me like that Looked at me like that Never looked at me like that Take a chance It's not your fault It's not your fault Put your fears on Put your fears on Put your fears on Put your fears on Put your fears on Look at what you look at me like

It's Emily Pilbeam. It is the BBC Introducing Mixtape and I am sat with Chalk who have just played an amazing set on the BBC Introducing stage. How was it for you? Amazing. Beautiful.

Beautiful day, great crowd. Very, very sweaty performance. You're still looking quite red. Was it fun? Yeah. I went to have a shower and the water was boiling hot, so I'm a bit like having to put cold water on my head. Nice. How are you feeling about being at Glastonbury? Because obviously you've played a couple of BBC Introducing stages. You played the BBC Introducing stage at Leeds and Reading Festival. Glastonbury must feel like a massive achievement. Yeah.

Yeah, we're just glad that I think Playhead, whilst we've sort of been evolving as a band the last couple of years and I suppose just before they take the year off as well, it felt kind of right to do it so we're grateful for being invited. Is

Is this your first Glastonbury? This is my first Glastonbury. A big bucket list moment for the band. It was kind of one we always wanted to do and delighted to get the call from BBC Introducing because we know the Fallow year is coming up so we'd have been gutted if we didn't get to come. You guys have been super busy. The last time I saw you was at Brudenell. I think it was back in March on your tour and you just seem to have not stopped since then. Playing with Fontaine's DC, what was that like?

Yeah, it was really cool to meet those guys because when we became a band, it was one of the reasons, was just watching those guys release music and stuff. So yeah, that was great.

Were they nice? Lovely lads. Can I ask you about the outfits? Because I've been following you guys for a while and you've got some nice new outfits on stage. Talk about your glove. Yes, custom glove. I got made by Lucinda Graham. Lots of lovely little spikes and leather. And first time wearing it today, so who knows? Maybe it's glove summer for me, I think. So what's going on with Chalk then? Are you recording an album? Because you've released a couple of EPs. Is it three EPs? Yes.

Please, can we get an album? Yes. Album coming up. We're in the middle of recording and writing at the minute and new music coming out soon. We recorded in Donegal. It was really nice. And we're going to be recording in Belfast in a few weeks as well. So we don't know if we're going to go anywhere else yet, but all Ireland based at the minute. Who are you off to see this weekend? Is there anyone you are desperate to see whilst you're here or anywhere in Glastonbury you want to go?

Well, I've been told the park at sunset is a good place to be, so I'll go check that out. But I'll go see Turnstile, Underhorse. I need to check the line-up again. I need to update my app. I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. Oh, well, it was lovely to see you guys. Thanks so much for playing our stage, and I'll see you soon. Thanks so much, yeah. See you later. MUSIC PLAYS

So we've got time for on the show this week. I will be back with you next week with more live music from Glastonbury.
