Susan started stand-up comedy after graduating from her master's program, where her research focused on feminism. She came across a recruitment notice for a Chinese female stand-up comedy show and decided to give it a try, encouraged by her friends.
Susan was bullied in middle school by her male classmates, who called her and another girl 'ugly tyrants.' They threw bottles at her, pushed her, and ostracized her. This experience left her with significant trauma, which she later processed through stand-up comedy.
Susan's understanding of feminism deepened through her studies and personal experiences. She learned to channel her anger and frustration into activism and comedy, realizing that feminism often starts with anger and the need to express unspoken emotions.
Susan found therapy to be a crucial tool for processing her emotions and understanding the roots of her psychological struggles. It helped her connect her childhood traumas with her current emotional challenges, providing a sense of relief and clarity.
Susan faced significant resistance from her parents when she decided to pursue a master's degree abroad. They felt threatened by her growing independence and tried to control her through arranged marriages and criticism. Despite their opposition, Susan persisted and eventually gained their support after proving her academic success.
Stand-up comedy provided Susan with a platform to share her experiences and turn her pain into humor. By performing, she was able to process her traumas, connect with others who had similar experiences, and find a sense of collective healing and empowerment.
Susan reflected on how violence, both physical and emotional, had been a part of her life. She questioned whether she would perpetuate the cycle of violence, especially after an incident where she hit her cat. Through feminist discussions, she explored the idea of using violence as a means to achieve non-violent ends.
Susan stopped performing stand-up comedy in China because she felt the environment was not safe or supportive enough for her high-energy performances. She prioritized protecting her mental health and energy over continuing to perform in an unsupportive setting.
Hannah Gadsby's Nanette had a profound impact on Susan, as it challenged the toxic culture of self-deprecation in comedy. Gadsby's performance inspired Susan to embrace her identity and use her voice to empower others, rather than conforming to societal expectations of humor.
Susan encourages women to stay at the table and continue expressing themselves, whether through stand-up comedy, writing, or other forms of communication. She believes that women's voices are still underrepresented and that every woman's story is worth telling.
