Deep Dive

Chapters
This chapter explores the European Space Agency's prediction of 100,000 satellites in orbit by 2030. It examines the current number of satellites, the rate of increase, and the factors influencing this growth, including commercial involvement and licensing.
  • ESA predicts 100,000 satellites by 2030
  • Currently over 11,000 satellites in orbit
  • Rapid growth due to commercial companies, especially SpaceX
  • Around 80,000 satellites on the drawing board

The number of satellites orbiting our planet has been rapidly increasing in recent years. But what are the risks when they start falling back down to earth?

The European Space agency estimate that by 2030 there will be 100,000 satellites in orbit. We look at whether that estimate is realistic and what it means for those of us living on the ground below, with the help of Jonathan McDowell and Fionagh Thomson.
