It's time for the Maggie geb and listener Andrew brings us our quick tip of the week with this little nugget by accident, I paced some a tala text into apple messages the other day. And senate old works just as well, just using the command ire command plus b to highlight that text. And utalian boden, I think you could probably underline IT too more tips like this place your questions answer today and Maggie gap number ten sixty five for monday, november twenty fifth, twenty twenty four.

Reading spots and welcome to make up the show where we take tips like that from you, from us. We share them. We share cool we your questions.

If we try to answer your questions or at least give some idea of where the trouble shooting process might lead us so that we can each be a short of learning at least five new things every single time we get together. Sponsors for this episode include in cooney outcome slash Maggie. That's where you can use code, Maggie, to get sixty percent off one of their annual plans.

Other world computing this black friday, uh O W C brings us mac users as apple users, unBeatable savings of up to eighty five percent at max sale stock. And one password dot coms lash M G G is where you can go to get set up with one password extended access management would solve the problems of traditional that traditional im and md m cannot touch. So we will talk more about those in a minute. Here on november twenty fifth shopping reminder day i'm dave hamilton and dorn.

hampshire. And here in south dakota, i'm adam Christianson and .

greetings from the west coast out in the oakland bay area this morning. Is pilot pete glad to be here, guys. I wasn't gonna be .

and now I am. I think you we're going to be you, we're going to be.

You weren't supposed to be in the united states or wrong. Ten sixty five code on grabbing in progress. So if you're shopping today, just have a look out.

H, I had when I looked up, when I looked up, ten, sixty five youth. Your source for the easy is Better than mine. I'm just going to say no because the one I looked up at, police codes, dot nett said nett message assignment.

Like that's boring. I mean, certainly as computer nerds, we can take that and spin IT into something interesting. But I like .

you Better kind of is a little more .

grip is IT. okay? Well, yes, but I have yet next year.

I have yet .

to prepare next week show, so I don't know.

Oh, goodness, and I did my first stop on the tips too. Oh, do you know what actually I want to to follow up on the equitable that we got because he talked about italicizing messages and building messages, that sort of thing. Also, if you typed something out and then go back and selected in IOS, if you look at the top, there's a little a with three little lines next to IT.

And that allows you to do all kinds of other funny stuff with messages to include having IT, you know pulse and and larger and dance around a little bit and circle. And that does all kinds are really cool stuff. And I think I saw somewhere in there yesterday when I explained with IT that you can also get IT to insert passwords.

So it's .

yeah play play with the message window in I O S, and you'll find gold stuff in there. But there's .

a third voice here today.

Yeah I think I think I was supposed .

you at first and i'm sorry.

No, no, no. I was just followed that you dear, that I left. But yeah, speaking of air, tony has a tip.

He says, loving the show and all I learned since two thousand seven well, thanks, tony, for being around maybe earlier even he thinks he says, this is kind of stupid, but maybe don't help someone. I switch between the lot, the log attack mx master mouse in the apple magic mouse. I noticed that when using the magic mouse, more and more clicks were unrecognized.

The logic tech mouse was fine, so not software um and I thought, won't maybe time for a new mouse right? Well, looking at the thing, figured there wasn't much electronic, mechanical going on, but thought, what the heck? Like IT was my birthday?

I blew hard into the slip between the top and bottom parts at the front of the mouse. And yes, clicks are all registering now, maybe compressed here as a wiser option, though. And why not go around the sides as well? So below, in out the mouse, like a old data, I cartage guess, as we did that with our with our intendo Carries too. But yeah, like, like old game council cartage, you'd have to, like, you blow those things to .

get working in IT. I forget about that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Fun stuff. That's adam Christians in their folks. Thank you for for doing that. I don't think we've said .

your name yet this episode.

So yeah.

yeah o okay, yeah. I miss. I thought we just step.

Sorry, I have been south to kota.

I remember this now. Yes, yeah. I member, yeah, here we are.

Okay, welcome back, dave.

thanks. I'm happy to be here. I haven't. I know I A couple nights. I don't know why, but I get to sleep fine. And then I wake up super early in my minds, like time to do stuff and like, okay, here we are so .

yeah yeah .

thursday everythings a little bit of.

we are recording this a little bit early so that we can freeze in two before the holiday and all its so yeah.

it's all good the .

fourth monday this week sure feels like IT um yeah I I have I have won from doctor lee.

a doctor in the house.

doctor in the house that's right um I was listened to us. I am only a doctor. I'm in mexico that's the only place to the descriptions.

It's true. It's the long story.

Folks go many years. Yeah, i'll find the episode. I'll like you to IT sure I was listening. dr. Orly continues to an audio book on my airport's progeny while also logging into my bank account on my mac.

A pop up message appeared asking me to enter the pink ID code sent to your phone just as I took a big swig of diet coke while waiting for the code stereo. Stereo says, pink, I D into a code. Would you like me to read IT with my mouth full of diet coke? I noted yes, and then entered the pain I D code.

As theory read, IT allowed digit by digit. This not, this is not our artificial intelligence folks that's just intelligent. He says, yes.

Of course, many codes will auto fill on the mac if you have enabled messages in cloud and I cloud, but not all. And that is true. A lot of them just don't seem to work. So you have the nod with the with airports pro the ah the airports not .

will call IT I so cool, it's so same.

Yeah I I I forget what I was but i've been wearing my airpower s more and more um since I ve got that airpower s prod to and I was doing something somewhere walking and got a you know a thing and I just know a quick little not and read me the message I yes I was I was when I was in new york or something but um yeah those the I the airport's project has been i'm really stoked about these and I can almost guarantee you that like I don't have advanced knowledge of this so i'm just speculating.

But there will be some kind of deal on them again for black friday from apple because that's just how that be right. Um but um I I went in turned on hearing assistance in airports project and IT has you take a hearing test IT will also IT offered to use a hearing test of mine that I had stored in health from two years ago, which tells me that was not taken with apple's hearing test methods because those are new but I have taken several hearing tests with my you know with apples method s since I came out. It's spotted on with what I get at the audiologist and and i'm happy to report that despite bashing on the drums for decades and decades, apple still is is insistent that I do not need any assistance with my hearing, which is awesome.

I love that i've experienced the same thing, which is od, because I know I have enough ten is that IT IT drives me nuts. sure. But apparently I can still pick up the little tiny tones that they're sending me.

I can test to you being able to pick up the tiny tones and it's not a, it's not a there's no joke back backing that up yeah yeah. But the thing .

back to the airport. T not ever so quickly and linguistic and there i've noticed I can use IT to win theory will announced, hey, you've left your your ipad in your backpack, in your suitcase and starts giving me all. You've left all this behind. All I have to do is not known when he shut up. It's beautiful.

Yeah.

stop talking. SHE, stop talking and go back to listening of my podcast.

No couple things. You have to turn that on right the right thing. And and also I think you have to turn on the audio announcements, which was also part of the tips of people are wondering like why I don't get the message announcements you have.

These are two features. You have to go to your serious setback and enable them there. Not I don't believe they are on by default.

you have to enable them. And then I think there's something in the area pod settings, which of course, I can't look at right now because I don't have my airpower s on. It's ridiculous that the only way to get to the airport d settings is to go into settings blue tooth and hit the little eye and then you get this whole world.

That's where your hearing test is. That's where all that stuff is. It's a little it's a little monkey.

Yeah so then finally I just want to commit on the hearing things I think I brought this up, but I never did to follow up. I did in up using my airpower s pro to for that concert that I went to, told the what's rocket and very naked ladies here with the hearing protection and told wasn't that loud. I think IT was somewhere in the eighty to nineteen dd range the whole time, and then particularities were ninety up into the hundreds. And that's when I really started kick in in and IT worked great and IT monitor everything the whole time, and I brought everything back down into that eighty, eighty range under ninety. So that's nice.

wow. yeah. And IT sound, I assume IT sounded good.

Sounds good to me. Yeah, I did great.

And I i've used IT to that is something that you turn on and leave on all the time. And I just kicks in when IT needs to yeah.

yeah, yeah I mean, obvious ly have to be .

in the transparency motor, whatever.

But yeah, right.

You can be a nose cancellation.

And I now I think I will protect your hearing in noise cancellation mode, but not letting like IT might not sound achieve the .

muffle the higher end when you do that. But yes, I don't know that's interesting.

I mean, I assume the noise and cancellation, though, that noise shouldn't be become a lot, that noise ouldn't be coming in, right, right.

right? I don't know. I have tried IT in noise. Can I got to do that?

I, anyway, I just a little people. I did work, and that worked great. And I was kind of fun. N even til I got my apple watch, watch, you can see the actual db now on the apple watch.

but I leave A D, B, the, whatever it's called the sound meter as one of the complications on the face of my apple watch. So no matter where I am, I can look quick and see like right now I mean it's right in front of my face but I meant about seventy eight D B when i'm projecting ah, but it's super helpful to know like oh ah that's what is yes okay great. So and it's fairly accurate.

I have put that up against A A, A turn db meter used by the the guy who tech front a house for Kenny chesney. Guy robbed scovill. I might put I did an interview with Robert scovel earlier this year and gig gab.

And we ve got really nerdy about sound. I might drop that in our mac gb feed for you folks to to listen to you feel free to skip in. But I think I think there is something in there that we all like.

But I put IT up against his. I was actually at a Kenny chesney show standing next to him while he was mixing and put my watch up against his db meter and I was like, yes, and it's it's one or three up here, buddy. He's like yet he actually said to me before the show starts like, dave, listen, i'm not going to be offended if you wear earplugs like robbery.

I was one hundred percent going to wear earplugs and I didn't even think that you bite the offender. great. Like, dude, yeah. So .

yeah.

you're right. Todd has something driving me crazy. He says, he says, that drives me crazy that you cannot write. Click on a photo to get at the export command.

When you click on the file menu, export is below, which leads to export one photo and export unmodified original for one photo. I think the number will change depending upon the number of photos you've selected, he says. Then off to the far right, in great out text on the shortcut keys. I've been using the max since the one one A K I know the shortcut keys are to the right, but somehow, just the other day, I saw shift command e, which is the shortcut expert photos and photos, there is peace in the world again.

love. IT. Yeah, I don't.

I don't export photos often that I know people do. The one that I like always is the unmodified original. You know, people want to like, pack up photos or because, you know, often you go in your photo, you know think about the right you've cropped IT at some point or you've done some sort of adjustment edit that yeah hands in some way. Maybe you want to get back to the original, but you don't want to like revert IT back. You wants to leave IT the way IT wasn't photos cy and exported .

out unmodified. I find myself I I tod's tip definitely resonated with me. I find myself exporting photos frequently enough that i'm frustrated by the fact that you can't write, click export of photo um yeah yeah yeah yeah I I started doing .

IT as soon as I read that. That's one of the ones that felt right into my work flow as I got them there is. So thank you.

Yeah .

right. Well.

shall I take us to dam please?

Alright, so so dam rode in with kind of a long one, and he buried the lead. And the lead is the he is the quick tip that i'm gonna share. But I will say then he he found a way to use notes to make IT, to do IT, to do list and an a rather effective one.

But it's long. And so I want to take some time to play with IT, maybe come up with a tutorial of something that could be posted or something along those lines because using notes for a to do list seems pretty ool because IT sinks so nicely across and IT isn't all always popping up on your calendar. That being said, he uses notes.

And like me, dan was annoyed that when you put in a hyperlink in notes, IT comes up and is very difficult to see yellow. That's it's defauts because multi I color highlights is what's the default. But he says, if you go in the system settings, appearance, accent colors, you changed IT from multi color to blue.

Or if you like magenta, or whatever color you like, I pick up blue the best. I changed its blue. And boom. Now when I put a hyper links in notes, IT comes up blue. Oh, it's so much as you're on the eyes, then you .

bury the well. But that's like bearing the lead is the essence of quick tips, right? It's the thing that dan does automatically or any of us do automatically because it's in our workflow. And then when one of us IT doesn't do IT sees is like, wow, we dim IT IT how did you bury the lead? So yeah, yeah.

because I would go in and I would highlight the link and I would change the color to blue. And then if you would mess with the link at all, like the right back, that hard to see faded yellow.

P, P.

O. Yeah, it's gonna you, but i'm OK with .

that because my ice is the blue so well so you gonna to find a color you really like.

Yeah, it's just a bar that what are why they don't offer some sort of override? You know like you know what I do with like great setting custom keyboard shortcuts, you could do IT on a per APP basis. That would be nice if they could extend that to say, okay, unhappy with multicolor as the default. But for this one APP, yes. And i'm looking in .

system settings on notes and .

I don't seeing about colors. No, yeah I think that's absolutely a apple things .

play apple things, right? It's like .

you .

will do IT this way. You will like IT yes.

yeah, yes, yes, yes. What's the problem? There's no problem. That's right. yeah. Eber a tony tells us as shares a little tip, the new apple keyboards have the new key below the f thirteen key. IT is a context menu key, uh, similar to like a right click and he says, I was curious if I could add IT to my previous model keyboard system preferences, keyboard, keyboard shortcuts, keyboard show contextual menu, and the default is control return. So you can do this, he says, but I changed IT to f thirteen, which I don't use for anything, and that way at almost matches the new keyboards so you can assign na key that you never use like a thirteen to this show contextual menu keyboard shortcut and that way you can get ah your your keyboard chocolate .

ah wait on my extended keyboard under if thirteen is the function key for me but I have an old keyboards so you're saying the new keyboards have some .

sort of new key yeah there's a key to show the I think apple calls at the context menu key and IT IT brings up it's like right clicking right wherever you are. IT brings up the context menu of things. So yes, so you can approximate this again system and we'll put the the whole string of things in there in the shown notes. But it's a system preferences, keyboard, keyboard shortcuts, keyboard show context this and this .

only works with new keyboards. Are is this no masked on old keyed?

This is how to that's the tip is how tony is teaching us how to map IT on an old keyboard. Yes.

got you.

Yeah so so speaking a mapping .

last week, we had the tip about shift and enter and just enter by itself. So I I use your keyboard mystery and I got IT said, and I was doing IT for everything and so I went, this is terrible and then I went in keyboard moston said, I only do IT for messages and ChatGPT. I can't tell you how many times my, apparently I am sub conciousness or unconsciously hitting shift and inner.

Now I keeps sending messages, but i'm getting there. I'm going to keep IT. I want to work with IT until until IT goes back to Normal because i've been hitting shift dinner to to a new line. So I don't send a message you just .

described my week because I created those shortcuts during the show, right? To test me. They work. And of then, of course, kids card. My just so IT sinks to every mac that I have.

And I don't need to say you said IT like i've been oh, because I fumbling in my finger don't know what they're doing anymore. It's been maybe that's why i'm unable to sleep this week. My mind is learning new thing, learning keyboard .

remapping so but every time that happens, i'm like.

I this is one hundred percent my fault and my doing and I want IT this way. Yes, however.

it's going to take some time to unlearn. And then the next time you get a new mac, you can .

rock.

Well, would you like to learn something else? New day, I would. John has won for us. This is good morning. Gentleman in, oh, that word again.

Oh, no.

I often make IT this images, sometimes cryptic. Using file utility, I noticed that making them on an external hard drive often fails with the air Operation failed with status, one Operation not permitted. You see this, he says, go into system settings, privacy and security, full desk access, and make sure that discuss tilly has full this access by adding IT from the applications folder.

If IT was not listed, he wasn't. So that will allow youtube continue to make discuss ges. So this utility and needs permission. I don't know why I won't have that by default, but there you .

go yeah why isn't IT asking for IT either prompting to like.

right I hate those errors that yeah code one. What what's code one come? I mean, just ask for the permission.

Just ask yeah but yeah .

but one of thing and I think we probably covered IT on here, but I learned several weeks back, if not several months back, is that and I don't think ever knew this, is that you can drag an application into that settings, wind over this permission or many other settings, say he wants to be able to do this, wants to be able to do that. How do you add? Instead of hitting the little plus sign and looking for IT, you just dragged the application right on top of that, turning to window.

and IT comes up. great. Yeah, yes.

true. You do, you do go.

So I think about that dialogue that I that I wish would all those dialogues, as I wish that developers maybe had away or apple force developers to like add some sort of explanation as to why certain aps need certain levels of access, like I often don't understand and like why is this APP asking for access to, you know, audio recording or screen recording or whatever? It's like sometimes that feels odd, and i'm sure there's a very good reason for that. But .

yeah yeah, one of my favorites in sqa, Michael, is fifteen, is when i'd launched an APP and IT asked for access to devices on the local network.

Yeah that wants the .

most confusing and but it's it's for printing is what IT is because I must say that that's the thing right? Like the mac should tell me what trigger this you went to print and IT wants to talk to a device in the local network, which isn't entirely correct because i'm just telling you to print in the system is handling the printing. So think that's the one that feels like I wanna tell this up no to this question and yet still allow IT to print yeah there's I believe especially with mac as fifteen and the the expiring reminders and all of that, I think apples gone too far.

Yeah, right.

I really do.

I really do. Yes, it's very windows. Vito e.

it's this. We and you know like I feel like we burned our opportunity on this because didn't we call like three O S S ago the one that was flaky, the windows vista? You know, this one is not unstable.

So which is which don't give me wrong, like super happy about that yeah but IT is like, yeah we're onna get alert but blindly I know we've talked about this before, but no NIPS in the U. K. Shared a tip in our discord that actually for me was a tip in reverse.

And the tip is that, uh, you can go in to your reminders setting on your mac and you can do this on your on your phone too, and set a notification for all day reminders so that if you have, you can cause in reminders, you can set reminders to be timed reminders. So you could say, you know, remind me at ten am to do this or you can just say, remind me tomorrow to do this and then it's an untidy minder. You can set in settings, a notification time for you, all of your untied reminders that you still get that notification.

And it's it's in reminders, settings and then in all day reminders. And you can show IT today notification and IT that defauts is nine am. When I saw this, I thought, oh my gosh, I need to be able to turn that off.

So I did. I went in and turned IT off because I don't need all of my reminders are untied, and I don't need reminder. I don't need a su of notifications at nine am that talk about alert blindness.

I just click and turn them off hundred percent of the time. So I just turned to that off and now I don't get that nine deluge. I already get IT from slack and everything else like, yeah, no, I don't. I like now nine to one day to .

make IT Better right .

as soon as i've settled back into my work from being distracted by all the nine notifications that are unnecessary. Now at nine o one, awesome, amazing. Pete, can you make sure to text me at nine o two A M every day?

Me remind myself at eight fifty nine to remind .

you in three minutes exactly. Just find stuff if you've got quick tips folks, feedback at mac geek gab dot com, we would love to hear from you.

Don't send them there. Send of the feedback .

so many tips, and nothing's a problem, only an opportunity. Learn five stars, by the way, this is their model. And they live by IT helping you with your problems, if you need, and in doing so, helping us to learn how to fix or avoid the problem.

You never knew about seven years a follower of their show, and I in love how they always keep me interested. And then I am desperately waiting for the next episode. And that's from s crammed in the and kingdom to meet.

Podcast solver producers you like the following day, apple and tip A O the o in english, unread as poo on apple. And basically what they're saying is one of the best podcasts about apple products and platforms. I always learned something with a new tip and you can send questions and they try to help in english.

Uh, years of recommendations in support for the apple community. So thank you so much from a mr. Elless Y A I L I S Y E S. I'm sorry for pushing IT.

I, I, I have one thing to say to to that review and that is a noted that his author part so don't get cause uh that kick up the calm slash review is the place to go uh, if we make IT easy for you to review the show and we really love to get those five star reviews, really any stars, but you know, the five is we like those Better? I guess. No.

after the window show.

I just decided .

to call IT know, listen to those ads, right? Yes, that last in colonial. Those example seem to oddly specific today, just same .

how does ChatGPT know about about .

my .

flamingo? That's right. yeah. For those of you who don't know, I try to make the ads interesting. I've always tried to make the ads interesting in in addition, I tried to make the ads short um for a variety of reasons.

But you know certainly one of the top ones is we are respectful of your time and we want to tell you about these cool sponsors that we have, but we want to do IT efficiently. So I do we record the ads for the show most of the time we, we play them in. So that is in the flow obvious. Ly, about a year ago, I realized that even though I was trying to make the ads different, each time when I would get the same set of talking points, my brain would basically make the same script. And so I now have ChatGPT make the scripts for almost every add.

You hear us read, and I tell IT to make IT different from the last one and add in some little easter eggs in there, so that we all kind of have some fun as we're listening to them, even if it's the same sponsor you ve heard before, you get to hear IT a little bit differently, and we all have some fun together. So I I have IT pushed the limits of what the sponsors will accept because, you know, it's fun, but we don't want to to get cut. And I want to share one other thing about ads now that we're here because this is probably going to start happening.

But I believe I talked on this show about the private privacy pixel, or a proxy that I created back in August while I was at podcast movement, so that we could put the industry's third party redirects in our our, in our R S. S. enclosures.

Great, right? So that they can confirm the download in all that stuff. But I want to protect your I P.

address. And so we are going to start doing that on this show. I've been doing IT on business brain now for several months. That was the first show I tested with. It's going spectacularly. And one of the the major benefits is there are sponsors, I would say half of the sponsors we have on business brain right now would not be on that show if we did not allow pixel.

And they are all OK with the way we're doing these pixel, mostly obscure ing b scoring who you are specifically, but still giving some some like geographic data and things like that so that they can know that. okay. Will someone in new hampshire listen to this episode? Okay, great.

They're in the dma of the boston area. Like those things are important. Also, they can confirm that someone actually download of the show and so they get their numbers and all that stuff.

I'm telling you this because I know lots of you use overcast and overcast right now for our show does reports that we don't use any tracking ers. IT is about to start reporting that we use tracks ers. And that's gonna true.

I'm going to work with marco and hopefully have him puts something in there about the back beat media privacy pixel that IT IT communicates that IT protects you from being actually being tracked. That's not gonna be in there on day one. And so I just wanted to say that here you are being protected by us.

We're not going to beat a whole lot of drums about this in public. And that's largely because the podcast industry has said, listen, just like nielson had before, there's nothing new, it's nothing bad. Is is not negative, although the words i'm going to use might sound that way.

We need a shared delusion in every industry about how advertising can track success and performance. And this is the one the podcast industry has chosen. Nielson was far more imperfect than what we're doing here. But basically, nobody talked about how imperfect Nelson was. We just all accepted IT in the industry and IT was fine.

The same thing is happening in podcasting and it's totally OK and our thing will still protect you even though we were not out there beating drums and you know wearing t shirts that says IT the industry basically he said don't talk about IT so much. So we're happy to talk about IT here. We're just don't expect to press release about this.

But no, that you're being protected. right? good. Did I say that right? Like do you guys think yeah I think yeah think so.

I do remember you talking about that back when you came back from podcast moment.

yes. yeah. So it's working. It's working way Better than I ever anticipated because I didn't think the attribution tracking ers, we're going to be OK with IT for the most part.

They all seem like like, fine, it's stop, stop talking. Okay, got IT. Do you do you mind .

if I say something positive about one or advertise?

I don't. It's our advertisers.

but that's okay. Well, you know what I mean? Yes, so so I I took up the incognito al and I put in everything in the apple card, rejected the payment.

I mean.

so I went back and I approved this an apple card, and you can do IT I good. So I went back and folded all out, and I paid full Price. Like, mean, because IT took the code out when I refreshed the screen, so I went back to cognition, said, hey, can you give me, know, eighteen dollars so we can do a partial reef? They respond IT right away, kid, to a partial refund cancell IT and and you know, will give you your money back right now.

So, and they did. So I get my money back right away, and I resigned up. And what I thought one would have to answer all this information, again, about my email address and all that kind of different with back and started to back up. And IT was all there. They worked so super fast and a responsive customer service, and I really .

appreciated that. amazing. I'm curious to hear about your experience with them. Like i've heard very I haven't used IT yet myself yeah .

which is why so far they have me over two hundred and fifteen hours apparently in according to their dashboard to send, hey, can you take me off your list please? Over three hundred, over three hundred removals. I had no idea as on three hundred lists.

Well that's oh, i'm on three thousand, probably ten thousand to those two. yeah.

Curious to see my numbers but not in like it's more like that I can turn my eyes away from the train. Rec curious .

but yeah great.

Yeah yes but yeah good stuff. Hey, other good stuff I want. While we're in the in the show business here, I want to thank all of our premium subscribers whose contributions have come in recently.

I'm trying to think about a Better way to do this. So if anybody who's listening. Says, I wish you guys would do IT this way feedback and I can tell us I I wanted acknowledge everyone, but I know IT takes a couple minutes and so i'm open, please suggestion. Let's do some questions and you can learn about the premium program because mac give up slash premium and .

we love you for IT solution. yes. So questions .

I was .

looking for the question to ban there. IT is coming up now. So um the first question comes from gary, how do we extend apple care plus as month to month D M G G jeans I downloaded of the apple store APP to my phone because i'm thinking of getting a newer apple watch since minus two years old.

I was looking at the information from my products. I just happened to notice that the apple care plus on my m one mac will expire january eleven, twenty twenty five. I was looking at information on the apple site, IT setter and IT looks like I can extend my courage with an annual plan.

And IT says I have to do IT within forty five days of exploration. I'm not taking an option to renew IT on the site, so I actually have to wait for the warranty run out before I can do so. Or is my mac to old? The imac was purchased on january thirty.

Ens, twenty twenty three. Thanks for the show and keep on coming. Thanks, gary.

Yeah Carry is not like this answer. Okay.

I was trying .

to do the research to actually find this. I think it's very deep in in your apple care plus terms and conditions somewhere. Um I was having trouble finding IT, but i'm pretty sure ninety nine point nine percent sure the answer is you can't you cannot switch from a yearly plan to a months to months plan at all, which is why I started buying the months month play in up front because the month month you just continue until l you don't want to pay anymore.

Obviously, the advantage to apple, there is probably most of us are going to forget that we have a product on month, the month, forget to turn IT off at some point. So I have to actually go back and review mine. You know, you can go through your devices list and see what's on apple care and what's on month month stuff like that.

But yeah, you cannot do IT. You can extend the early. And in the terms of service, it's worth noting, apple does not need to extend your early. They they does do, but there's specific terms in there that says they don't have any obligation to extend IT.

Obviously, they let you yeah so you really can you have to cut and decide when you're going the device, if you're going to do yearly, you know the two year, whatever it's at the terms are or the most mother apple calls, they have a different term for IT. Basically the month the month of plan pays you go plan or whatever. So that's why that's why I switched.

I mean, that was the main reason I switched way back of the day, and I just decided this is a Better option for me because I can keep going as long as I have the device and I don't have I don't know how long i'm going to have this device of this product. Where is a year day? I think you can do once.

The other thing to be aware of is you can transfer your apple care plus to a new oder. And I think you're only allow to do that one time under the terms and conditions. Another thing to know about the terms and conditions is they are set depending upon when you bought the device.

So every time they changed them, you know you sort of grandfather than to whatever term you sign up for originally. So a lot of the stuff i'm talking about is the more recent plans, if you go further, further back, there's still different terms and conditions and unapplied ms and conditions page theyll have IT listed. If you bought your apple care plus this date, these are your terms and conditions. If you bought between these dates, these are your terms and conditions. So that gets really complicated very, very quickly.

Yeah, unfortunately.

you cannot transition between months to month in early. I don't think you go the other way either, but that i'm less sure .

of I don't know a say that there .

some exceptions to the month month coverage to says he has a twenty twenty ipad pro and IT was on the list that he couldn't cover uh, his apple pencil image c keyboard. They recovered originally when he purchased the ipad.

But yeah, there's that's another interesting new ones to this is you really want to look at um what's covered because I I think back in the day, and i'm assuming still the same, if you bought a mac in a monitor at the same time, I think the monitor is auto covered by your apple care package or was again, I don't know if that and maybe that's not the same for about a month, maybe that's only the so you got .

like liked to those horses conditions was also you had apple care on a device. Yeah yeah.

So read the details, people because there's like there's new ones in their unfortunately that adam.

i've never gone with months, a months you know off the top ier your head is at the same Price?

No, I think every year ultimately more expensive.

okay. Yeah, yeah, yes. But you're gaining .

the advantage. And and I think one of them is only offered IT. Do they even offer a non plus planes? No, no.

not to my the i'd bet what I know the god IT hasn't .

is the plus. I think ads like the accept a not death last active production. I think if you want that death loss twenty years .

to go higher yeah but anyway.

no, I mean, I mean, ally do the month to month, especially with like my iphones and stuff like that because I hand him down in the family and so we transfer that apple care to the next person down line. No IT just .

continues and makes sense. Okay.

then everything is covered like every but i'm sure like I I need to go back and review because i'm sure i'm paying for a care devices that i'm either not using or or not a new city more .

I can almost guarantee IT. Oh yeah, that's a good apple car. That's a good so yeah, yeah.

able just doesn't turn that off for you.

right? Keep that in. Come and keep those cards and common.

yeah. I wonder if those those like subscription removal services would think to look at that stuff.

And I would think so. I think they require you though plugin you had to like plug in all year, your log in details. That's the way I think .

that always gets .

a little where me out.

I think experience bought the one though after the name of the one, use an experience bottom, just interesting. And I think dave and in my wrong is ment mobile use like all state or something like that and they offer you I think it's like a seven hours a month .

playing for your phone. They do offer IT. I've never bought IT so I don't know they .

use yeah F Y I put those join in the in the discord chat says that if you trade your apple devices and they will auto terminate your month to month .

subscription.

which makes sense yeah yeah yeah. I mean, the main reason I buy the month of months because I know i'm not going to get rid of them if if I knew I was going to rid of the product in two years, i'm just going to do the annual right plan, right? right? Like in two to three years, i'm just doing the annual plan. I'm just extending my my coverage. But the idea the months, the month because I mean, I keep my stuff forever now like I I don't upgrade often. Yeah .

interesting how I shall we go on to mike?

We show am I reading IT? I think .

Adams reading IT I can read .

IT that matter?

Oh, well.

I was. That's what is said on the thing .

that you were gonna ad, mike, what I think I removed well, I van here a little bit.

I lost. So somebody .

hasn't hand what you want me to do.

Joe, you look for mike.

Yeah, go. Yeah, go for IT. Okay.

so join and he goes, hi guys. Dave is familiar with my set up so can probably respond more easily. I've been using this asano logy nance to store a media collection using plex and as a supplementary time machine backup.

The thing is configuring in maintaining the synergy is a pain in the rear end. Um sometimes IT pez, a editorial comment there, but not always. I'm a bit of a nerd.

I listen M G G F M, but I am not interested in learning and staying up the data. Sonos gy systems, which are the upset of user friendly. okay. And now and I see that I get that i'm sorry, I keep Better toral six.

And now in and now in the senote gy security issues i've been reading about, i'm seriously considering digging the nice and using the available empty mac binning as a server. What am I giving up by abandoned in the nest? Cheers, joe.

So I do I agree with some of your editorial aliza peat that sonos gy is fairly user friendly for me and and its beak IT IT is more user friendly objectively than than lots of other nest systems. However, IT is a new Operating system to learn and it's not it's it's the most apple like of all the nass web inner faces.

But that doesn't mean it's apple like there are three different places to go and set things and it's not a linear path to do some stuff once you know IT IT makes sense, but it's not intuitive at in the way that you know just anyone can just bounce in there and antigens point, he doesn't want to stay up to date on snowy. So like that's okay. Um as far as the security issues, I didn't want to address that.

There was a recent uh exploit that was discovered with synods gy photos. Um IT was made into a big deal by some of the articles about IT and IT IT was a big deal. But the thing is most people don't have 3 ology photos installed。 The articles made IT sound like IT was installed and activated by default on everything.

And it's only true on the sonos gy b station, which is there sort of not it's like a nas light, if you will, ds nas for people who don't want to have to manage and ask like um and IT does some things, but you know the services are just on and photos is one of the things that just on. They have patched that bug and all all is well in world again again, so long as you stay up to date on IT. But as far as I know, that's really the only big one that's happened recently.

Um as for what to answer your question, Michael s isn't really built to be a server, right? I know it's running unique underneath so that IT can be, but the the guy that we call macos, uh, is not really built as a severe Operating system. So some things just aren't available on IT.

For example, if you want to run sonos gy office, which is their self hosted google drive sheet stocks thing, then you d need some third party software to do that. And now you're back in the world of managing a third party server that happens to be running on macos as well, and that mir may not be any different. However, if you just want to to run a plex service and use IT for time machine backup s, then obviously that something macos can handle and your mac mini has a way faster.

CPU in the synod. Gy, this station that most of us would have in our homes way faster. So for all that video transcoding that plex might want to do, your mac is gonna like ions faster than what the psychology can do.

So you'd be giving up a fault tolerant storage that this synnoeve has, right? Because your mac has one drive. And the synod gy, you have packed plenty of drives into IT.

You could mitigate that by getting something like the auto uc mercury proquet or the thunder bay mini europe gonna spend for those about like in the in the rounding error category is basically you're spending the same on that box that you would be on the psychology box and then putting drivers in IT in order to get that fault tolerant storage and mondo storage. So you know, and now you get to managed that thing, but IT is managed by Michael s, right? You if if you want, you can use software and that sort of thing, but macos can do IT.

So you know it's a trade off but you get the faster C, P, U. At the magi, which to me is the a lure of IT. But i'm comfortable with snooze so I see you not in a long adam.

Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, i'm good with all those things. I mean, the biggest one is the the fall tolerance in the drives and stuff like that. And again, for that single use scenario though, it's a really nice way to use a mac mini that you may not oh wise be using .

yeah so so I so I use both uh and let me let me first start off with the addressing some of the things if you've already get the sono logy here's the thing joe is said I had the same issues IT was difficult to learn and I still don't know IT completely. But i've been a pilot. I don't have to memorize the flight manual.

I have to know where to go to find the answer. And sonos gy makes that easy in the top right corner, there's a little search window and any setting you're looking for. If you type that in there, IT will almost assuredly take you right to the setting, but for which you are looking.

And often there's a little eye and you click on that and go and IT comes up as, hey, this is what's going on and I typed that in the ChatGPT. Okay, what does this really? Him, he and often get the answer.

So i'm able to to model my way through with synods gy most of the time. So I am having a difficulty with dave. I'm going to need your help, I know.

And then maybe it'll be a show topic in the future why one of my drives keeps going and that and not playing. I got two, two, 3 ology stations。 One keeps going abNormal and and i'm not thinking I put IT all in in the next day.

It's it's off again, but that's a whole other other thing. And finally, joe, there are a lots of youtube videos on how to do this in snooty and how to do that. Sonos gy in being a visual learner.

I I find that super helpful. Um but that being said, I also use a mac money for my media server. I run plus on IT. I run channels on IT and and one of the beautiful things in channels is you can tell you make my CPU hurt, find the commercials and skip so when i'm washing a television show, uh, IT will automatically skip right through and I don't think that the snooze may do that with changes.

But um not not when you can run eight course of a CPU on a mac mini IT won't be nearly as effective so I do use both but is synnoeve frustrating sometimes. Yeah but i've also learned a model through using those those tips, which is search window and asking ChatGPT, what does that really mean? What what happens if I change this setting and frequently get a pretty good answer?

Sometimes it's strong and wrong.

Never about the single to that with the synod. Gy is, yeah, you do have to sometimes figure so stuff out, but the reality is, is that sort of the wrong propel method? You have to figured out once and you set IT and you forget IT once.

Once you've done the work, for the most part, you know you mentioned occasionally you might have the odd issue, but I mean, that's just computers. Once you've done IT, it's done and you're done like I don't go in there and mess with my my plex or I don't go there and best with mine, right? Time machine backup PS, right? Yep.

yep, it's for sure I there is one piece of software that might be interesting uh, to anyone thinking of using a mac. Many is kind of, you know, the headless server of your house, if you will. And that is a piece software called own cloud.

It's available, you know it's it's free for community use. And then if you're going to use IT for you know your company or whatever, then you you pay for IT for sure. But IT gives you control like a nice wood.

IT has spaces which is like managing files on a network drive. IT has web office, which is is like only office. And all of those things kind of pull together so you can tie your work documents and IT kind of like synod gy office.

So looking into own cloud again, if you if you're using that might be interesting. I looked at IT a couple of years ago when I was like kind of having this thought process of all stick with snow logy. Should I just take an old mac and repair power, whatever? So own cloud is, is worth looking at there. So no apple go.

I, I, I found my place before we quickly move on. I do want to come. And john in the in the discord t pointed out from a real conversation about apple care plus up care plus on the mac is not available month to month at all.

So just f why I everything we were talking about applies to you for month, months just to playing other devices outside the mac. So just to clarify that, thank you. All right. So my cat, a question, he says, gentlemen and the other guy.

no, I love that. Oh, oh, oh.

I know who is talking to the same.

Love IT, he says, long time, touch a grave. Glad to hear adam again too. Well, glad to hear from you and thank you.

I also have a touch of Grace, so I think we're in the same time, but he says, hoping you can fix this without losing the entire message string. We have a family message string that goes back and back and back with lots of photos of kids, grandkids and so on. IT works fantastic on all my devices except my macbook pro and one.

I still see all the messages come into the string, but alas, no reply box is present at the bottom. To reply, I have to move to another vice like a neander fall to reply. Ah so he wants to know, how do we fix this? He is, as always, your help is greatly appreciated.

I hope we can help um I i've seen this before so yeah my ends, i've made IT go away. But that doesn't mean I know how I did that.

Your computer.

right? So essentially it's IT IT shows up in messages as a like a read only thing like almost like you've been removed from the chat. And I I think this is an important way to frame how we might approach this.

So the first thing would be going to messages, settings, eye message and click like sink now and make sure it's it's doing it's thinking if that doesn't work, sign out of eymet sage reboot, sign back in and see if that on sticks things. But I know from mike that that did not work for him. So the other thing to kind of as we talk on this thread of, okay, read only messages doesn't think I am able to participate in this anymore.

But clearly you are because your phone and other devices can do IT. It's just this one. Mac IT says, no. So in message, this is going to settings and there's the list of addresses that are a that that you can receive and ly from. And if that message thread includes either A A version of you and address for you, an old phone number and all the email address that or a current one that you've unchecked there, this could happen. Or if it's an old one, this could happen.

And so the way I would approach this is, well, a check that list and look and figure out which address of yours this chat has, and then either have you on your other device or someone else, add a current version of you to the chat. I remember we had to do this with our daughter when he moved. We had our family chat was based on phone numbers.

And when SHE moved to italy, you know, he gave up her U. S. number.

Well, actually you had converted IT to a google voice number, but it's no longer part of her apple I. D. And therefore we needed to add her with her.

I cloud email address. And then, you know, that kind of brought everything back. I still have a weird problem.

By the way, my son's IT just went away. This is totally separate. And yes, i'm taking personal privilege on a tangent here. My son and daughter were part of our family group chat um or part of our their eyes cloud identity had their at macos server doc coma dresses.

Obviously, we sold that to mean they don't use those addresses anymore than not part of IT in find my when I see my daughter SHE is her old at macc observer doc address, I don't get to see her name because it's not part of our eyes club thing and I can't figure out how to fix that. But anyway, back to you, mike. Ah my son was exactly the same way, not quite back to mike.

My son was the same way. And then magically recently IT just fixed so I don't know about that. But uh three years later, here we are. Um but hopefully make adding you again in there would be the the trick that I mean, no, we don't know but .

sounds logical to be. I mean, it's worth checking .

that for sure for sure yeah so it's a weird thing.

Yeah ask lucas what he changed.

I did. Oh, I can you immediately texted him like, too, how did you do this? Because I didn't do anything I make.

Yeah, but is that true? 是 like, he's his. Listen, he's with me. Go head.

He added that is .

that he host. If he didn't, he knew what he was doing. He's really actually how say .

you cut me to the quick.

He's a much Better of colder than I and spends a lot more time in in linux that I do special days. So yeah.

I deserve that.

Yeah you did. You did. That's true. I don't disagree. Who like body all right?

Um if you have any thoughts on these questions, feedback, of course, at Maggie cap t com. Not feedback, of course, at feedback at mckie. Got a com, of course that's Better address. I'm not gonna add feedback, of course that is going to bounce.

So flash, of course, or I .

deserve that. Okay, let's do some cool stuff. Found Randy Walker, found one that seemed quite popular in our discord.

Mci, up that comes like discord where everybody rocks. By the way, it's it's an APP for your phone called a reduct privacy. Of course, we have a linked to IT in the shown note.

And what he does is IT master letes. All of your social posts comments dms on whatever platform you you pointed out. And I think IT works with a lot of platforms out there.

So if you've decided you're done or you haven't used a platform for a long time and just want to kind of race your digital history from the platform, doesn't mean it's race from search engines, obviously. But if you want to erase your social posts um reduct privacy, we'll do IT. So thank you for that really fun stuff.

Love IT love IT very, very cool. I have a calling from my soccer hot days. I think that's how you probably said from this came for through disco also kind of goes into our, you don't give kid stuff.

I would buy this for someone, maybe even myself. He likes us to the retro games coding at the calendar. And i'm going to try to describe this will have a leak there.

But this looks like, I mean, it's at that calender where you open the little boxes and then there is cool stuff inside. But what's great about this one is the cool stuff that inside is electronics component, like lds and wires and bread boards and all that sort of stuff. And that comes with a little booklet t and you open IT up.

And each day IT gives you things to build a game. You get like twenty four games, games. And this I obviously it's an calendar so you could build and play every day with a little electronic ics kit. And what's even cooler is IT looks like the whole thing that becomes member.

I talked about this sort of retro uh, electronics kids you would get from, like radio, shocked back of the day, kind of all the back is printed, but kind of looks like that you put the bread board inside of IT. Yeah, he messa read with things. But you could build a little game each each day as you open up arable thing. And it's like thirty box.

thirty box.

I know I come up goods so .

you looks like a lot of.

for my way, water.

What are these for myself? I know. Yeah, we do advent calendars for our kids every Christmas, and we've continued doing that. And we really stoked because for the next two weeks, my daughter is home with us. So where we're getting going to hang out, which is nice, but we do advent calendars.

If we had not already gotten luis a different advent calendar, this would absolutely have been ordered immediately because it's the kind of thing that yeah like us nerves we love IT. So you a poor those john actually sent in quite a few cool stuff. S found the the one we're talking about here is the base U S.

I believe that the name, or is IT base as B A S E U S, I call IT basis, almost eight in one charging station. This things pretty cool. It's got a uh cheap ad for like your you know your your airpower s or whatever.

It's got a mag safe fork I think it's cheat to which is magnetic and and fully functional thing for your phones. So essentially max for your phone and you can put IT in the nights. And well, because IT flips up, it's also got three ac outlets on IT, which is different than a lot of these things in having A C out like I I could see this either IT IT. You know like on your couch where you might wind up wanting to plug stuff in and have plugs there. I could also see potentially even travelling with this thing so that you've got outlets where you need them and then it's got U S, B, C.

ports. And that time the big .

and not behind the picture.

behind the headboard of the bed out I swear my my .

back problems come directly from uh, having to move credence in hotel rooms. IT has nothing Carrying drums um yeah but yeah it's a pretty cool thing. It's it's seventy books right now on amazon.

You know how Prices changed over there but ah call so thanks for sharing that for those down very, very cool. Oh, this is IT. It's free. James shares this action button shortcut, which i'll put a link to the the edit post here.

But and we have talked about, you know, you can run a shortcut with your action bottom and this one, I love the ideas this, so what happens is when you press the action button with the shortcut and you can download shortcut and just use IT out of the box um for free, the shortcut will run and wait for one second if you do nothing. IT tangles silent mode, which is the default action but behavior. However, in that one second, if you press the increase volume button, button below the action button, IT opens, uh, the authentic cator APP for this user.

If you press the volume downes tt IT opens a menu with other apps that you might want to open. And then also, if you do nothing and you're driving, IT opens a menu with destinations that I can, that he can map to with google maps, or you could, should you do with apple maps to. So, but I love this a for what IT is, but also for the the thought process that IT triggers.

Ers like, oh, we do the action button, and then you can do other things that you're telling the shortcut to do. It's like that the part where it's like the one second pass is huge to me because now you get different shortcuts gone on. So yes.

yes, that's perfect because I started messing around with changing what my action button could do. And I quickly realized that I had a hard time getting my phone back to, you know, off the silent. I want, I want you to know, I want to, to be so.

So what I use IT for to my muscle memory. yes. And yes, seeing this that's awesome. And for i'm going to tell me myself I really feel stupid.

I don't know why I think power and action, but but ah because I changed IT and I didn't realize like that is not working. I don't know what why it's not working. Then a couple days later, I hit the action, but no one to take my phone out of mute yeah, because i've known i'm not here and thanks. Well, that's the action.

But never mind you so we have .

lots of cool .

stuff found lefts. So we'll talk about more of those next week, but there is one that I wanted to share because I know you're traveling, pete. And if you want to share this one from grump y mike.

yeah. So group y might put in discord. Thank you so much. We did we talk about the barley um or barrel ax on the mt three thousand travel rider that repeats the hotel wifi or the airplane wifi.

And I what I didn't mention is that even though it's in beta virtual well, IT supports tail scale and using an exit note. So I know what I was trying to do was and messing with IT I still haven't done IT is make my VPN the writer go to my VPN to my home. I can get IT to work with P A VPN.

No problem. It's kind of built into a eat downloads and files and in the works, great less a long time couldn't yet IT to work with my VPN running off of my sono logy rather just because you have to go in and can figure IT and I can mess with IT. Well turns out that the tail scale um I can run my mac many at home as an exit node and often do.

And the bar x router will go, oh yeah. I can use that. So use this tail scale and and my exit notice now home, I appeared to be home even when i'm not.

That's .

awesome to that to my wife.

I also want to remind people that, uh, there is a tail scale APP for apple TV and you can set your apple TV to be an exit node. I find IT to be faster than my sonos gy at acting like an exit node because there's some C, P, U overhead that that happens. Evidently it's A A bit and you know my apple TV is plug in all the time and is on ether net.

I think if your apple TV was on wifi, you might want to see like how good that connection is before you start using that as an exit node. And for everyone who is completely confused about what we're talking about in terms of tail scale eggs IT nodes, what an exit note does is IT essentially makes IT like, uh, A V P N. So you connect to the tae scale device at your house, and when IT set in this exit node mode, and you use IT that way. And this is a choice you making in the menu on your mac or on your iphone. Once you enable that, all your traffic goes through that device at your house, and you appear like pizz to be coming from your home or wherever that exit node might be.

Yeah so except the youtube T, V, which goes. So no, you're on the laptop. Let me have your location. No, you can't watch.

but that's okay.

So in and i'm there's a way to do IT. I read about IT and I didn't do IT yet. And so my project gonna this week is to learn how to access, for instance, my printer at at home because I can't put a tail scale print on my printer.

I've already done IT. You just have to connect your printer by its IP address on your local network, and then, and then you're good to go. That's what I do, and I come home.

Things are printed. I did IT on the train. I connected .

my my local network, but my local network .

is ten .

years eight, that one. But my premier is an on ten sixty eight one.

Well, it's on ten, six, eight, eight something though and you just that's the ipad. You're going to system settings printers add a printer, add a manually add by I P address and put in the I P address of your printer, assuming it's a network printer .

if it's not a kit. So okay, so here here's i'm confused day. So my home network is net ten is one nine, two that one, sixty eight that one to one. My travel network is one and two that one, sixty eight, eight that one. So it's on the dead eight of not the .

that one e scale can be set to. And I forget the terminology OK, but tail scale can be set to allow um local network access, allow local network access.

allow direct access to the local network and running traffic. And next checking, I should be able .

to pink .

my partner.

correct? Got IT SHE. You can you see that? Yes.

I know it's great and you IT won't see IT like in the bunge jw browser. If you're far from IT won't see IT you have to menu. I had to manually add as an IP dss and then IT was fine.

So and now welcome to what happens when my phone rings and it's pete that's that's that's the conversation. So do you go? Yeah.
