It's time for mckie gabin listener uncle jay brings us a quick tip of the week with in many text editors on the mac, you could hold down the option key when selecting text with a mouse. This allows you to select a rectangular block of text that includes parts of multiple lines. Once selected, the usual cut, copy and paste Operations supply.

This is particularly useful if your text includes column oriented information. I've used this in bb today, but IT also works in text, eat pages, previous, even microsoft word. This is a bit around for decades, but I bet many people didn't know you could do this. More tips like this place your questions they answer today on magic key cab ten sixty six for monday, december second, twenty twenty four.

Greeting spokes and welcome to maxi up the show where you send in tips like that, we share them. You send in cool stuff out. We share that to you send in your questions.

We try to answer those. The goal being that each of us learns at least five new things every single time we get together. Sometimes we even play that sound.

Sponsors for this episode include kota dot I O slash M G G. That's one doctor rule them all. You can bring all your text and tables together.

Will talk more about that a little bit as usual will see what ChatGPT has me say about that because I have ChatGPT uh write me at scripts and most of the time you hear me reading them cold so I don't know what i'm about to say until I say that most of the time. Um so here on, yes, today, december second is a world computer, literally, day. But perhaps even Better, IT is also both national skip school day and national bar tender appreciation day.

So I know what to do if you're skipping in school today. I guess I don't know that depends on which school you're skipping. I suppose here in here of new .

hampshire i'm dave hamilton and here in self dakota i'm .

adam Christian said and here in the frigid weight north of encourage alexa is pilot pete and show ten sixty six notify the medical examiner I told you last week I was dark folks.

oh, okay, so that matches the one I came up with in the list I look at, which is check officers well being. That's a nice way, way of saying IT baby, you know, let's direct though.

Oh yeah. Well.

hopefully we won't need one as cold as IT is. And i've got a late summer wind break up with me just in case I need IT.

Your schedule has been bounced around like crazy on this thread.

Yes, I I started off in dubai, where IT was a pleasant eighty five degrees in mumbai, I india, where IT reached almost nine. Not planning and go to enrich on this. And yeah.

oh yeah, oh yeah. So what do I do to myself here? Okay, I hit the chapters document, which is not a good do .

you go are give away .

um you're onna have to we are recording this ahead of well ahead of a of uh, december first. And even though it's the second because of the thanksgiving holiday, most you .

thanksgiving was day over .

a week early. My thanksgiving was fantastic. I'm happy to speak about the future in the past, so I don't have the the details on our giveaway, but you can go to making up that come slack giveaway and sign up for the new giveaway because IT happens every month. I know there is one. I know who that is, but I just don't have the details, so not going to announce that yet in case in case something happens between now and that those john, no, sorry, por.

Those john does have a tip for us that Adams going to share next after this PC unix says if you have added ChatGPT to syria on your iphone uh you can if you have those instances where you asked syria question and uh you know he says I can't tell you that uh while you're driving or at any time ah you can say you can say, you know hey s lady using ChatGPT, please tell me x and that will force that I don't have tried this in in the current builds of of eighteen point whatever that i'm running IT works IT automatically goes to ChatGPT and gets you a response. So that is a great tip. Thank you. PC. That's a beta feature .

right now though, right? You have to be run in the beta. I don't think that's been specially.

Think I think you're right. Well, I am running the beta. I am in eighteen two. Yeah but if yeah yes.

but it's coming further rest of you. But you can get on the beta problem problem. I think .

it's even probably part of IT.

yes. So just be aware of that.

Yeah, no good call. Thank you for for, for saying that.

Well, here is poor this, john. He has a tip for, he says disabled dot da store on network drives exactly what the title says. It's in some utilities, but super important. If you use a nas or drop box, google drive acedera in terminal, uh, you have to type a default rights command will put IT in the chanos, but its defaults ghz come at apple at just series that DNS don't write network stores in the bully an true this is super important for thinking as non max will consider this file as a regular hidden file and IT will version IT, meaning that every time you change a file or if you have a really compact, complex folder structure that is deep, can mean lots of, lots of changes to those files. Timing up versions in sinking.

Also note that even with show all files in the finder or showing hidden files, dd, a storm will not show up in the finder, but will show up on network drives, another Operating systems. So you know that pec D S. Store file, anybody who lives in know, linux, unix were also knows about that.

I was hoping to do, I forgot to do a little research. I wanted to do some research on this and remind everybody what's in that. But I think on the mac, right, that stores like folder, name and information and icon, it's like the things about the files and .

folders yeah if you're right, that it's the things about the files and folders. What I thought IT stored with locations like, if you like in the window, if you have rearranged things in a icon based window, its stores that kind of stop, but they're probably other things. But but yes, it's meddle a but this is IT is available, as he said, in utilities like onic's.

And we will put a links to that in the shown that that's probably the easiest place to do IT. When I did this in onic's and check the box, IT told me I needed to restart my mac in order for this to take effect. So just be aware of that. But yeah yes, IT is a good thing like he said for version ing and things like that, you don't want IT to just go nuts version ing those files.

Yeah, it's also like another thing that I do is just because it's unnecessary. You if you use FTP service or you're doing like sinking or something to some external drive that doesn't need those folders like I have my transmit automatically set to filter out the dest store files. So when i'm doing like a sink on an FTP, i'm not like sending up a much .

of right files.

It's very much that's very much a mac only file like only your .

mac needs that file yeah right right yeah yeah you right you're mac does yeah yeah exactly. Hi well.

porthos Johnson. And another one, he he, he had to try effect today actually. But this one is cool because if you've ever try to help somebody do something with an iphone and they're telling you what they see, but they're not very descriptive if you're just pulling your hair out.

So I I can't help you, i'm sorry. Here's how you can remote control an iphone. You get natively control and iphone remotely. You can only view the string, but here's how that worked. If everyone's on the latest macos and IOS, you can remote control of iphone and help support by having your family member enable and activate iphone mirrors on their mac. And then you start screen sharing from your mac to theirs. You use the most common way to do IT is to use what their upper idea is, that how you get screens ing to work and that you'll be able to a control the phone via the screen sharing a mirror. 不行 is .

it's .

briled。 I mean, how many times have you try to help me today? And I am looking at. I was going to be looking. I was trying to help .

my dad the other night with something i'll talk about. We get deeper into the epsom here, but I was something we had to do on his mac and then on his iphone. And on his mac, I just screen shared and looked at IT.

And IT was a weird thing. And then when we got to his iphone, I was like to I can't like we're going to have to do this like the the hack slash way because I can't see what you're seeing. And this is, this is going to be frustration.

So yes, if only he could head.

if only anger .

about this Green man, yeah. Well.

I have more on this later because this is a frustration for me. So we will get into this um in a later section we talk about my mom. But just remind everybody that you can share an iphone screen IOS screen .

in face time so what you .

can there's button for IT. Yes yeah spent for a while.

So yeah.

okay so this is why you have to use yeah to be on a face time call. Yeah but yeah, yes.

there's a little ipad. Yeah you saying there's .

there's a little shirt .

content buton in a little control panel looks like the two little screens I like right .

on the face time screen I don't like I haven't seen this. Okay, I believe you. I'm just trying to get enough context cues. Yeah.

i'll grab the i'll grab the article from.

okay, apple. Yeah cool pete.

what you say? Yeah, you can't control. You keep you. You're not controlling the screen to be clear because paths Jones people get confused on this is not screen control, is just mirrors.

right? No.

that you see those little batch touch those yes.

to do you know what later i'm going to face time call you pete and you're onna. Walk me through touch in the dot so I can share my phone screen .

with you three year ago.

Let's do IT. I think .

i'm up next. I was .

trying to like, do they edit and put the link in there? But let me do this first.

Yeah, do this first. So good.

So our next tip is from, why do I not have a person in there? I thought you just found this.

but maybe, maybe somebody else found IT. Uh, I know somebody .

in our discord. I know how I all grab IT. This is you can someone found out that you can install a large files from the APP store on an external drive.

IT was Steve hammond .

and you somehow I didn't get I didn't get the name on there, but and I just found this that was actually from a mac rumors article. So i'll try to make sure that link is there are two to give them credit. But he says, if you're running out of space on your maxi internal drive makos suoi fifteen point one includes a handing new feature that lets you install large japs directly to external storage.

Here's how you could use IT to preserve space, or on your boot drive. You connect external drive tear maka, obviously open the market, open the abstinence ick APP store in the menu bar and select settings, check the box next to downloaded, and install large apps to a separate disk, and then you select the external drive that you want to use from the drop down menu. Boom, you're done now.

Of course, this only works with apps that are larger than one gigabit. You need to be aware that the external drive has to be obviously connected to enable the setting. The drive should be format in A P, F, S format.

And then depending upon the APP, some apps actually stored like data, data still stored on your main drive. So we're just talking about super large apps and and of themselves. So I imagine you are things like games, anything that's a super large application.

okay. Ah that's actually a really nice change. Uh, I mean, IT IT would IT would be nicer. It's a good step.

right? Yes, a stuff ford.

It's a stuff ford. Yes, I like that. Yeah, that's good. It's stuff. Um Richard has A A A A tip for us.

He says I like using free form on the ipad, but it's always been difficult to use for me, he says on a desktop mac without a track pad as there was no easy way to pan around inside a free form canvas. However, with macos fifteen point one, this has now changed. You can press the space bar while dragging on the canvas to pan around.

So IT kind of talks you back and forth between selecting mode or clicking mode, and grabbing with your hands, your virtual hand, and moving the canvas around when you hold the spaceport down. This is a very nice improvement. Yeah, it's great.

I got ta get into free form more. I have a feeling. I know you use IT right out, but I have not because .

I don't haven't made to use IT with this is the problem with apple created great technologies, right? But like I work in office with people on max, people on pcs like, you know, so we end up using tools like zoom instead of face time or like.

yeah, yeah, yeah.

That's the problem with the apple ecosystem is they don't make this stuff across platform. And I think they need to grow out of that at some point, right? They if they want to build collaborative tools, if they need to be truly collaborating with everybody, they can be in the world garden or restricted to the world garden.

It's fair. It's why all these cross platform, you know lives in your web browser or tools are as as popular as they are because they work with IT like our sponsor code, right? Like I mean, it's one of the things that's that's the beauty of IT is gets yourself in front of a web browser and you're done like, well, I mean, then you can start but yes.

another greatest apple is like, you know pages and numbers, you can now do IT with the web so at least they opened that up. But I mean that's I mean that's great for personal stuff probably, but at an office that really does not work. So like I still I love numbers. I prefer numbers way more, then excel what i'm doing stuff. So I do everything in numbers at work and then just export out to an export file.

what I need to give IT to excel.

And now because what the stuff i'm doing with excell is nothing complex. I'm doing like web developed the stuff which to just like data mapping or something you know like it's just simple columns. And in rose, i'm not doing any fancy, fancy stuff. So it's not .

generating issue. Yeah I I find that I need to not I have numbers. I I prefer numbers like you. I use IT for all of the spread sheet that are only for me.

A lot of my personal like it's where I have my list of I P addresses and you know that sort of thing, which is great because I can easily pull IT up on my phone or wherever and IT just worked. But for anything that I need to share with anyone, even if they're also a macuser, I either use um I don't pay for h excel and and word. I don't pay for microsoft office a but I do use library office, which he is absolutely fantastic.

I IT feels like a mac APP. So no, it's part of the open office thing. IT is freely available for you to use and IT is a perfect clone of excel and word and powerpoint.

And you know all of those things, I may only only use IT for excel documents, but but it's spread s sheet that I wind up sharing around and you can set IT to save by default. IT saves in like the open doc format or something. I set IT to save in x ls x format.

And so IT effectively act like native excel when I pull things in and I save, there's no import export. It's just open save. So, but I use that, or like I said, google drive up to share spreadsheet or psychology office, where you can, like self, host your own web spread sheet too, which is that theology office is amazing. The fact that I can do that, you know, on the this station that lives at my house and that would be the case with the this stations that live IT all of our houses like like the you've got the .

four twenty three plus .

I think out of and love IT yeah fifty that's IT I think you can even run IT on that yeah so um yeah IT it's sonos. Gy office is awesome. We use IT entirely for one of the businesses I have um instead of google dox or google sheet because we didn't let me start the business. Like why would we want google to have access to all this data whenever they want IT like, and I yeah I know they say they don't, but like if it's stored on their servers, they could, you know so it's like back and do IT .

here and it's, well, brother one so .

that's IT exactly so that yeah in snows, gy office is really a cloud based thing. IT just runs on my computer that that I can i'm the only one that touches IT. And if I need to, I can also unplug from the internet myself yeah speaking .

to security. Here's that try factor from porthos. Johnson has one last one for us.

He says, I know what has been mentioned before, but my life with wife and kids has been changed because of this. No were nagging. To log them in the hou deluxe eta, I set up password sharing.

This is the new password sharing and the new password APP for mac and IOS. He said. I set up password sharing a passenger's group for the family group and put wifi hou netflix in the rest in the shared group. Added bonus that when I change the password and save IT, the change password is changed for the shared group. Most interestingly, if there is a two factor multiple tor authentication via code, you can share the code generator if you are using the password up for IT.

Obviously, in the shared group too, he says, I have mixed feelings about this last one from a security angle, so I would advise, be careful and don't get hot with the codes because you really don't want those falling into nefarious hands. And I love this because I think I told you guys earlier, you know, I have one password family, obviously, and I love one password and i'm going to stick with one password. But for the life of me, I gave IT all to my family.

I showed them how to use IT. And I still get like, yeah, I didn't install the upper. I don't understand how IT works or whatever. So I mean, at the end of the day, this is kind of a chaotic c thing that apple is doing, in my opinion, a little bit sure.

But the advantage is once it's in there, it's integrated into the Operating system away that like it's gonna fill those passages, it's just going to prompt them and say, do you want to log into this thing? I already know the password, already know all this stuff and just do IT. And again, one does all that stuff too, but that does not a little bit differently and it's not obvious visibly can be as tightly integrated as what apple does. So i'm going to totally do this because like I get I get those calls what's so i'm trying to get in a netflix .

or disney plus later were not married to the .

same family and just the code.

And it's like I put IT in one password.

It's in one password. You guys can my families.

I showed them out how to use IT.

my families capable of using one password. Like if I say I put IT in one password, that that ends the conversation, that was my hope. And they in a log in, however, when I look over at least some of their shoulders, I see this absolute mess of a combination of one password in this. And if I at least is going to probably get mad of me for corner up.

But if I asked me, so hey, what's your apple I D password which of course I also have in my one password separately um but because I because IT comes about time but if I may at her computer, you know when I ask her what's your apple I D password I get this ah yeah and it's like, why is this? Why is this that moment think this is a simple this. Well, I think I have been stored in four different places and I don't know which one is current.

And this psychotic, never mind, I look at up on my phone like this is a passant so like the fact that apple also has a password manager is the problem. If one password was the only one on you're her computer or their computers, then IT wouldn't be an issue. Be like, oh ah we just use one password is totally fine, but it's the mix of bold and I know you can turn off apples, but IT, you know it's on by default and because of that, they've got some passwords in there. So I can't just like say turn that off. So yeah, i've i've toyed with the idea of moving everything to apple passwords, and it's gotten to a point now where it's robust .

enough that it's not literally no.

yes, exactly.

But the way is sharing in the the fact that you can do groups and all of those things, like, okay, what what would I miss if I move to this and know some of the shared notes and are the secure notes, and like my driver's license, my passport at those kinds of things, I can.

yes, the good news is you and I, we can use both.

Yes.

we just don't have to force, are other family members to to use IT with them?

The key? yeah. I've also thought about setting up my own bit more self hosted on my sonoy. Actually, do I have IT running, but I I don't use IT, but bit worn as a password manager that is server based. And you can run IT for free if you have a that's .

what we use IT. What we use work as we have to be PCI and all that stuff yeah, we can't. I mean, we literally don't put stuff in the cloud for very good reasons.

So your bit warden is self hosted. In that way you can check .

all the right boxes. Yeah not my and our cio controls IT. Yeah right. And that yet and .

that's IT. Yeah no, that that makes sense. Yeah.

it's on our servers in our rax, in our like so like that if there's a problem, you couldn't pack IT.

Hi folks. Look, you know I love my tech right? Well, when IT comes to organizing chaos, our sponsor, kota, is that go to tool one of my other businesses uses when we need to keep things organized.

It's like having a command center for your team, bringing documents, spread sheet and apps until one single platform, no more chasing straight emails are wondering who updated the road map coder keeps IT all in one place, signed up and easy to find. Shall we use some questions? Yeah and yeah.

I was going to say, here's a question from Larry. He wants to know he says, hey, geeks. Are you calling geeks? It's bit it's also a Better while since i've listened to the podcast all why is that?

Yeah welcome back lad. You're here. I'm been spending time with political power as ah no welcome back.

Welcome back for sure. Come sorry folks .

what time is IT in the .

morning .

for you? Peat over .

there and not it's a little after six.

a little after six. And we've been we've been yet. Okay, so that yeah.

that and I won't do that again.

Don't do that again. Let's help Larry here. He says, anyhow, I went to use my PDF pan on my ipad, but it's crashing.

So I went till luck and see if maybe there was an update, but there is nothing in the APP store. I searched for them online but can't find all the other PDF apps are using a the search term PDF pen. And lower people in, I imagine they're truly gone.

Yes, they are, Larry. They've moved to a different company and s still exist, but it's different. They've got more of a business focus.

I believe what I remember .

nro right is the new company, and I think there's very much more focused on business than personal use, my opinion. Yeah yeah, yeah. Um I figured you would you would we would basically know because you hostiles for them so much, get back in the day.

So the only reason why I even tried to opening IT up is because i'm having a problem with a fillip e book. This is a journal that we were given at work to in a route to the author to see if there was a fillimore version, as I do not right with a pen. okay? They said they were looking into creating one.

Okay, that's not a fillip version. Um they were looking into creating one. And after a few weeks, I got IT.

I'm trying to fill IT in using books, however, and I have to class on each line as IT does not automatically go to the next line. Okay, so he's working with this PDF in the books. APP.

I guess also IT starts to pick up a letter. Of course, even if I am in the middle of sentence or some reason I cannot click in middle line if I need to edit something in the middle of a sentence. And finally, when I try to fill in something down the lower portion of the page, the keyboard covers up the page.

Yeah, it's all really knowing. I'm wondering if there's anything I wondering if they did something wrong in creating this. Any suggestions about what to do or maybe a different APP thinking the latter is going to be the Better answer here but i'll get your guide's opinions. I have all the regular stand by PDF programs. Maybe you have a recommendation .

of one yeah so David, I both answered this um and I I don't know, dave, maybe you remember have we mentioned on the show before there's a thing called set up?

Yes, I want try.

Yeah okay. So IT is a subscription and so i'm started to sailor and now you don't like subscriptions, but this is one that is i've found to be well worth IT um great value at twice the Price. So sorry, don't do that set up .

just can keep IT worth exactly .

so now fantastic value because all the wonderful programs that they do make available and one of them happens to be nitro PDF pro now. So that's the f .

became ten became and IT has .

ninety percent positive rating on twenty five hundred reviews. And I if there were some scathed reviews in there, I ve got to say that I was was kind like, you know, i'm sorry to see that. But so I to use PDF expert expensive yeah ah now if you know anybody that got an eu email address, eu I used my daughter's study to you and got a substantial discount.

You're looking at the guy, if you're watching on youtube, who's paying the tuition. So I don't feel too badly about taking this count there. And and you know what? If he was buying IT, i'd be paying for d so on paying for d either way. Yeah but I find myself using PDF expert so often that I almost, almost looking for .

PDF to go edit. It's so good.

It's a reduction of PDF expert or P D F pro, P D F expert.

Okay, I got confused.

There is something like you are recommending the the nature APP.

Well, I know the the the new lips. Sorry, in the answer to Larry in the email, I said, no, I don't use this, but it's it's got mostly good ratings.

OK did find some .

poor ratings in IT though that were kind of like, oh, really so I can give you a fair, honest review. Haven't used to, but I did see that there was an editor, PDF nitro pro in, yes.

set up. Got you. I got lost there little bit. Yeah nitro. So smile sold PDF pen to this company nitro a few years back. So that's what's happening here. And they took IT over and they've done a bunch of things with IT.

From what I understand, and like you said in the community, there's a lot of mixed views because we had a lot of love for smile and this product and now it's different. So I think that's where a lot of that is just coming from. And i'm with you, I can't tell you if it's good, bad or the other because I moved on as well.

I can tell you that I moved on, I think, either right before or write about the time that smile sold PDF pen because I had to edit some PDF while I was traveling. And I had PDF pen, of course, because that, you know, they were responsible for a long time. They were the ultimate PDF editor for for certain, in for the mac for a long time.

yeah. And like me, and this is so frustrating, like IT took, I was able to get IT done, but IT was always a little bit, and this was always true, you know, PDF r janki, you've gotten figure out. Like, I wonder if somebody y's figured this out. And that's when I tried A P, D F expert and was like, oh, yes, the answer is yes. Someone has figured that out and I haven't look back it's so I can't imagine not yeah and it's just it's smooth, it's friction free even when you're editing stuff.

It's yeah so yes, it's expensive and worth IT you know says the guy who gets a free review copies so I I should state that that I don't think i've ever paid for PDF expert, but I would if I if if faced with the decision I would pay for IT. I might already have I can't remember. I definitely get a free review coffee initially.

I don't know if that's continued. I I can't remember. I spend a lot of money on things. So this might be one of.

So al, I A I A lot of money on things too.

Yeah.

it's true. Just ask .

my wife, right? So when we're seeing expensive, how expensive is expensive?

Think it's discount.

Yeah, I was going say what the discount was. ninety.

okay. So it's eighty .

eighty dollars.

eighty a year or two hundred box and you're done for life.

And with a discount, I think I paid for ninety.

Oh yeah, you ve got to do your educational email address. Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah. So I mean.

ah if it's good and it's really good, I mean, this is this is an APP from real so who people don't know a little Spark on documents and they they do a lot of great work.

Yeah so yeah, it's true. It's true.

cool. I would have no columns giving .

them my money, right? Yeah yeah. As I as as said, yes, that actually we move on yeah so .

lock tuder .

put on discord a frequent kernel panic and he says my aging twenty seven, twenty nineteen intel mac is having daily kern nel panic attacks um I don't know, dave, were doctors could we prescribed something for that? Michael is fifteen point one sixty four gigs twenty four hundred made hurts memory um the most recent was media analysis d but previous crash crashes show chrome spotlight knowledge d launch services d md worker underscore shared knowledge construction the photo analysis d pages google chrome helper blue tus D I .

sd in several .

ts of apps yeah yeah a lot of the d i'm noticing so there seeing there OK, yeah yeah. This is a daily occurrence, sometimes multiple times. And I started a couple of months ago.

Sometimes that happens when i'm working on something, and other times that it'll happen overnight when the computer is idle according to sqa, feels like I made IT worse. But I have no hard data. Is this behavior a known issue with a reliable, able cure? No computer, i'm sorry I didn't that.

no. Luckily, this one came from discord, and we've mentioned the matic number of numerous times. This is a great place to go to get support, help from the community, just a great community in general. So I encourage people that sign up or going there. If you haven't, I mean, you don't sign up.

you just got just go in up discord. Yes.

free to join this, no cost, just come hang out with everybody. But that's where you're like. Por, those john tried in on this question, and he definitely had what I think is the right answer.

He is my experience on intel max. Current panics are most likely, but not always caused by bad current extensions. And maybe not bad current extensions can be about a cruel extension, but just me old cruel extensions.

These are things that different applications use to, like add functionality at a more root level of the Operating system. It's a mechanism for doing that. K text files, you might have heard of these, but you know, they can get corrupter, have issues or things can happen.

So he says, honeywell, which is a great tool, has a rebuild process for the current extension cash. And he says, I would try that. Um there's also knowledge base article that goes into system and kernel extensions and macos and what they are what they're force. So if you want more to know more about these, but just no part of the Operating system things can happen.

And onex has a tool for rebuilding them, and then are standing in the disco chat, tried in and said, if you use the apple menu from the top left of the screen to view about this mac and then select the system report option, you can scroll down on the left side to the software section and choose extensions, and that will generate a list of these extensions that can take a while, and you can see the ones that are there in which which apps have them and stuff like that. But both kind of recommended looking into this. And I believe if I remember from the thread in the discord that IT did resolve the issue, running the onex tool resolved the issue.

So at least for now, we haven't or information back on IT. But yeah, I mean, another one would be to make sure your applications are up to date and also the tip from our standing, I would recommend going in looking at that list because maybe it's an old application that you installed with that win and it's having some sort of conflict. You're not even using that up anymore. And then you could uninstall IT using, on and uninstalled. Er you know like clean my mac ten .

right right. yeah. This is one of those scenarios where new can pave starts to like this is in support of a newton pave.

If you have especially old coronal extensions at the ones that he mentioned are all other than chrome, I think we're all apple. The processes is running bloods. The cornal extension that cash can can absolutely get you know get mucked up.

And but if rebuilding the text cash did not do IT, then you know the news can pave does get rid of all those old kernel extension sort by definition. No, it's how IT works. Yeah, but there is more surgical ways of of doing that. Like he said, uninstalling with clean my mac, all that stuff would be another way to go about IT yeah for sure. I'm not a huge fan and new can paint, by the way.

not anymore. I mean, he used to be a thing back in the day. I avoid IT more often than than do IT. It's it's a it's one of those last resort things in my opinion at this point, like I have you just if you've tried every if you exhausted every other solution and you're still having problems, then yeah, I would I would say go for IT.

But no, i'm going to i'm going to bring us jit. Well, first of all, peat before I sort of expand into attention that actually another question, do you have anything .

to add to to this one? Um not just an observation. You know we haven't mentioned that. So we mentioned in all, all the time but not a whole lot recently. IT seems and I just think IT seems to me that everything's gotten so much more stable for the most part with the with the recent Operating systems that that why you don't need a new king pave like we used to have to do. So yeah so yeah, that's just frustrating that his observation is that seems to have ve got more with a oy that's .

well porthos john is in the chat here too. He's absolutely the MVP of this particular episode and and he notes that text these cornal extensions are deep placated in apple silicon, but deprecated only means that they will eventually be discontinued. The, uh they are not yet discontinued.

And you get that warning every time you upgrade your Operating system. You know here, these kind of these are going to go away that we swear, but they haven't gone away yet. And and and so we're still dealing with this problem, but this is why part of why apple is making those go away. So but things yeah that things things rely on them. I want to bring us to eric x question, jumping in the agenda for anyone who's watching, which is not many of you.

So IT doesn't really matter but um eric brought us back to episode ten sixty two where a joe had sent in a note and asking should I start fresh with a new computer or just use migration assistant and all of us said, use migration assistant a eric ruin and said, well, I don't know about that advice and i'm actually conflicting eric's email with several others and so erick, please allow me some creative liberties with putting words in your mouth the general just was hate you know, if you're moving from intel to apple silicon, know i've always heard the advice to be absolutely do a newton page so that you have your fresh apps and all that. And I know that that was probably something we even said back when apple silicon was first a thing. But I I know I wouldn't say that anymore.

All the ability out there, fat binaries and the Operating six migration systems still works. But that's just me. What what do you think about?

I mean, I years back, a couple years ago, I don't remember when I was whenever the macbook the first and one macbook air came out. I got one of those for my wife and I had old intel mac mini like a twenty fourteen I think IT was her so sure and I migrated her and she's been using IT ever sense and I don't I don't remember remember zero issues yeah that's that's all I can speak to like I don't know, but like I only from experience like I I did the easy out, just migration assistance her from that to that and done went on with my life.

I took the easy right here in the studio a year ago when the twenty nineteen, until imac died from lightning, right? And I replaced IT with this max studio, obviously an apple silicon machine. And I didn't have time.

I didn't hadn't carve that time to do any of that financial budget either. So of time budget and money budget didn't exist to do the thing that I had to do. And you know, my set up in the studio here is not vanilla.

I have went two, three thunderbird hubs, a thunderbird audio interface, three displays, all kinds of weird stuff under the hood software, audio devices would like back, and all those things that are a juggling act to keep stable, right? And so you know changing even changing Operating systems. I am still not on fifteen on this computer for because if you know I didn't broke um and so changing .

well I know .

but that's the thing is I did I changed out the core hardware of IT and IT just dropped in seamlessly. There was nothing to do. So I like speaking as you said, I am from experience also speaking from experience. I I didn't I probably would have done IT if I planned for at all, but I didn't plan and didn't do IT and still here a year and a half later. Obviously, it's working mostly finding on I needed to not consume with there yeah I want to picture this episode actually records .

about yeah kind of dog tales from my earlier comment. And you know, IT seems perfectly stable. I used to be a huge fan, a new can paigning and I just that I haven't a one, a leader and it's been, yes, thank you apple. I was never works.

I advocated for IT. Um I was fan is probably ly going too far. But like, you know, every couple years, I would do IT like, you know, like the third or fourth time I was doing paying, you know, installed over upgrade.

I just be the at this time. But you know, IT became tour. The end I became mostly about that was my force spring cleaning lap.

That was my way to force myself to really not reinstall apps that I had opened in three years or not. Have A D in my application support folder or whatever. Yeah no.

I mean, it's so good for house. Keep housekeeping like dave would say, if you just if you're like, man, I just want a clean house. It's and you haven't done IT in years and years and years a good way to go because IT forces you, IT forces you. You spend a lot of time.

but not as much time as you think, but you're still gna end to.

yes, more stoler. I if you you got a two fifty six or five twelve .

hard drive in your laptop and you're probably going to be more likely to do that also makes us lazy that they give us one and two terrible ID option and more that that was the .

hardest st part for me because I think I had at least a one terrible driving that two thousand nine imac. The max studio that I bought is the base model and one max max studio with five twelve gig internal drive. Now I have gobs of external store hanging off of this thing, but I still migration assistance does not care about that.

So that was that was the tRicky part. And thankfully, I was able to make that work because I think I had about six hundred gigs of data on my internal drives. Like, right, I I this I need like that I had to do for.

yeah yeah so I just I I made a.

obviously I made a back up of IT to my sinologist, then just started hacking and slashing OK don't need this thing where don't need this, move this to the extra nal drive crap. Need another external drive. Okay, here, know those kinds .

of things so no no .

yeah uh IT IT uh IT was as far as when this comes out IT was thanksgiving um as far as we have concerned IT will be thanksgiving. Language intense so weird um so you .

but I know .

a lot of us will be helping our family members over thanksgiving IT. Turns out you and I adam are tend setters this year. So thanks giving tech support for our family members.

But go let me tell you the story is that all the guys is the story but yeah I got I got a panic all in the middle of the day for my mom. You know, you like, oh my god, what's around? Who died? Like, what happened? No, she's like, i'm at the grocery store.

Okay, here we go. And he was literally at the grocery store. I could hear the checker in the line.

SHE had gonna go SHE store SHE Normally doesn't go to and she's trying to get a discount on her turkey. She's buying the turkey for thanksgiving. I'm going out there to be with her in my daughter for thanksgiving ing.

And they had something like some disco, like you buy twenty five dollars with the groceries and then you can get ninety nine cents a pound on your turkey instead of two ninety nine pound or whatever they like. So was like, not an insignificant savings. Well, SHE gets up to like check out and she's qualifying and their like, well, you have to have our APP.

So she's tried like in the grocery store trying to download install the APP like we talked about with the passwords earlier if then prompts her for her apple password, which that's a whole new thing that I have to resolve when I get there, because I don't know why. For a freed APP download, he has to set up to require a password to like download the up. But the APP store wants her eye password. Well, SHE doesn't know her password. And before he called me, the checker just said, well, you don't need her password, just reset IT so SHE reset her eyelid password in line at the grocery store and now he can't log in SHE can't down to the APP the're not going to give her the discount like so and I just like, god, why just give her the discount right? But you know there are making old ladies download apps and the middle like.

ah so then I had to .

deal with. So where this really goes though, and where the tip in the information for everybody else is who might need to do support, is that when he finally got the APP, or when he finally got home, he ended up having to pay full Price for the turkey. By the way, they wouldn't give stupid discount without the stupid APP. Yeah, just I don't know what happened to customer service but anyway so SHE missed her. You get so I said our calculator will get this all sorted out.

We got to get your password and I know her passed her old password because like you day, if I have a story in one password is helper and I mean she's not ah she's stock going to remember that 你 know but SHE had changed IT to whatever you know who knows what IT is so luckily there is a couple things to be aware of this so this happens to you someone you know luckily he would change the password on your iphone。 SHE also happened, have an ipad. SHE doesn't have a mac.

SHE has an ipad. And that was still logged in. So if you have another device where you're ready logged in the eyes cloud, even if you change your password, you can change IT again.

You can go into that device. So I had to go into ipad, go into settings, go in to her account, and just change the password again to something that we could both know. And so he was able to change at that way.

But what I didn't know is you can also change the password on a borrowed device. And I think I accidentally closed my window that have this information up. But there's an article on apple support where you can actually go into a barrow device with the apple support APP.

And so you download the apple support APP, and IT has an option that you can go into to help somebody else change their password. Now they have to have a known device with them, like their iphone or whatever is going to send a transformation to them. So they you could either hand them your device and they can go into the APP store, do IT themselves and and reset the password from there. And I didn't know that was a thing. So yeah, you could actually can help somebody with the apple support out change their change their apple, where they are .

apple password yeah you launched the the apple support APP support tools reset password helps someone else look at that. Ah that's pretty .

good web huh?

So I learned some, I mean, only I learned something. But like grocery stores in people out there just help older ladies, just like given the disco is not going to kill you.

right? Like yeah, yeah, yeah. Is he qualified other than not having that didn't .

get a phone number.

They track they didn't track IT. That's that's where the value is from.

Yeah, the discount wasn't for spent in twenty five box IT was for giving us your data.

Correct correct.

Yeah exact roches are expensive. America, just like us, be kind to each other. Can we just be nice to each other for a little bit not corporate shells.

So um yeah it's true. Um my dad texted me the other day was like sunday or something oh yeah I was in the middle of like all day video shoot with this band amin and so he text me he's like, I haven't gotten male on he has a his own domain and he got IT before google stopped allowing free accounts for their google apps for domains so he still has his grandfather is like his email all goes through google and he text me on sunday is like I haven't got an email since friday on my personal account mike what okay.

And so it's I you i'm not in front of a computer. I'm not really in a spot where I can stop and do this. But you know ideally in my head i'm thinking, okay, did his domain get like expire somehow? Did he not do the thing that you've got ta click a button and log in as an admin once every six month? Or you know, whatever? Did he not do that? Or is his male box full? Like did he use his? Whatever is the fifteen gigs that you get with those free accounts of google? Like any of these things could be possible.

So i'm like, right, so i'd forgot about IT on sunday because he texted me early in the day and then then we have been an eight hour shooter or on monday and like, okay, late on monday night, I know he's asleep so I dig in and obviously very patient not getting his email, which is nice. I suppose I wish I wish I could be that patient if I wasn't getting detail and is a really nice place to be. Now I have goals which I want to be more like my dad, which is sort of my goal everyday.

But um so I logged in and looked in the admin interface for his domain and not everything's fine there. Then I logged in to his email account because I turns out I still had his password. No, he's got you know eight gigs, three of his fifteen okay.

So that's not the issue. And I can see in the web interface messages that are ported in, including the test test message that I sent him on sunday. You know, it's like trying to do this.

Like, okay, great. So we just got to figure this out and I always password hasn't changed to. And in google, you can look at the devices that are either logged in or recently log out.

And I see my computer is the only one that has an active session. Everything else, including his iphone and other max, which i'm assuming you know his uh are all showing, is logged out as of the day that he last got emails. So it's like OK, this is all checking out with a huge question mark, why you know and why is IT not just asking him to log in again?

So we screen sharing to his mac, and I controlled IT. I did IT with the the eye message, know the message is up, screen sharing work, totally find. And so we did that, and we I logged into his mac.

And like, this is really weird. And I I was able to, oh, I I turned the account off in internet settings and then turn IT back on. And at that moment, IT, that's when I got the you need to log back in and so great.

So we log back in with the existing password and boom email filled up on his mac like, okay, sure and okay, but you he's like like what about your iphone? Did that like open the flood gates for you note and this was where you know he's i'm trying to walk him through, but I don't know I don't even know what I really did on his mac to get IT to ask to reauthorize cate his account. So and I and I don't know how to replicate what I don't know on on his iphone, especially flying, flying, playing the Operator game. You know, tell me what you're sing on your iphone, right? And my daughter had just got at home for her two week thing.

And I don't want I love talking to my dad, but I don't want to like take an hour and a half away from my daughter to go like my dad's house and fix this and all the stuff so I was like, I dad, we're just going to delete the account from your phone and read d IT because that's going to to do this and then as I get that sounds fine and he's fairly technically savy, you know and so he's like, great yeah I know how to do that so we stayed on the form of I delete to the account. We added IT, of course, like IT should when you add an account, IT told them you have to go and like authenticated with the all of google stuff and like IT and he did IT and he's like, go okay, there's my email I see IT my great so but this was a server side thing. The fact that IT happened on both of his devices at exactly the same time.

And I look, there was no notification in his email from google saying, hey, we noticed x and expire all your existing sessions, but they certainly did expire all his existing sessions like there's no question about this was not something he did on one device because I was both of his devices at exactly the same point time to the minute, like in the list in google, IT was like, at that minute, everything stopped. So I have a question. I have two questions. why? why? Why do you say and I realize these, these, these aren't rtc ical, but they may be treated as if they are because we don't have the so why did this happen? And then the the more pressing one is, how can I like, well, maybe there's two.

How can I tell my devices to the authentic cate with google and b why didn't? Like, why didn't IT offer to do that? And I realized, these are all yes. What is he? The shrug shoulder salute?

Oh yeah.

yeah. yes. There is. It's the aft newman salute. That what me worry? right? yes. yeah. Ah.

so yes, I know the answer.

but if I tell .

you a day if you won't learn anything.

so go look IT up .

who's your body and so said he's got a gmail account all right?

Yeah his own domain with with hosted at google. So IT is effectively a .

gmail account yes. So just by coincident, when I started this trip, I had a day in month and have some dear friends there that well into their eighties now, not super tech heavy similar thing. Email just stopped in in was over two weeks and I happened a bit.

And she's like that kidney, but all all he has is the ipad. So I signed everything out and signed everything back in and IT didn't work. Didn't i'm like, you know, it's verify as we said, your password didn't work. And the next morning when I landed in dubai, I got an email from her. He said, IT started working.

okay. So maybe this problem is more widespread than my dad's s one account.

Yeah, that's why when you said gmail.

oh yes. Well, that's part of why I wanted to share this on the show in case anybody else is running into this because clearly, yes, I said that happened on the server. So yes.

and with no indication, right? You know, hey, this is you've got an error.

Anything like that? nothing. No, no. I did say that he's like on his mac. You know it's like a lightning bolt, whatever, in mail, apple mail, that shows that an account is offline. But in in trying to take IT online was IT wouldn't. And I even looked at the logs because you can go into that like activity manager and mail and then open up like the road logs of the communication with the male server and there were no errors in IT was weird. Man, sure you move in on I I have one thing .

that when listing ing to add to me, I forgot to I want to say what I think of up my story because we mentioned earlier the cool feature where you can use IOS now to like share your screen. So the other thing that just be aware if you have pais my mom is trying to help people like my mom.

I've tried this so many times with my mom because we remote and teller, let's just get on face time because i'm trying to like Walker through the interface right and she's like not click on the right thing or not get the right thing, and i'm trying to describe IT right. But there's just a communication barrier that often happens there. And people who've gone through this probably no exactly what i'm talking about. So i'm like let's just go on face time and not just share your screen. So SHE was on her right.

SHE was on a iphone at home talking to me, right? And ineffectively, what happens is one of two things i'll be like are IT let's face time so that we can share the screen so he knows how to get on face time and we get on face time and your colour and face time that's not a proof but like in this in her o SHE was at home and like, I mean, he has an ipad, but when he was at the grocery store, this was an action needed on her phone. So I helped them like install the APP and we were trying to configure IT and get her log in and we just struggling with IT so i'm like get on face time SHE gets on face time and SHE answer her face time on her phone but she's been installing the APP could figure out on the ipad, but he told me so then she's like trying to aim the camera at the ipad and he's like flip the vote around. And i'm trying to describe you are how to flip the camera around and she's not holding a closer look like your mileage may vary the moral, the stories. Your mileage may very even if you're trying to screen share.

你。 help.

I know my mom to death, but she's not not a tech person. I like i'm going to be there next week. I'm going to show you all this stuff resolve IT. But i'm there.

Yeah right? Yeah exactly. I I thought I thought I was going to have to tell my dad, ah we might need to wait for thanksgiving for this.

But thankfully we were obviously, you know, to get past IT. Should we should? Let's do some because it's the poor, those john episode, let's do some cool stuff found. And who Better to start with than cool stuff found from poor those john, this one, this one definitely falls in to the what will they think of next column but it's kind of cool and IT is it's called ringo uh IT has nothing to do with the ringo we all know and love um the stick wheeling ringo that we all know one of um I don't think this is a ringo water bottle where the top of the water bottle has a flip up circle that is exactly the right size and shape and material construction that IT is a mag safe holder for your phone so you get this mag safe water bottle holder uh thing and they uh they say um you have to take the whole top off to drink so there is no straw mechanism on this and they don't get caught note from porter. John and I think i'm attributing this to protest an accurate I know was there was a discuss about IT um the amazon listing for IT which is about sixty box on amazon IT says IT is stable when empty and IT kind of is but if empty I would make sure you have IT in a cup holder of some kind as IT is a White top heavy which obviously makes .

yeah so all buy one. If they make a version that has the bottom, you can unscrew and stick a beer bottle .

up in there and put them back in 哪 一道 题。

That's the one they have. Those, by the way, to make safe older now looks like a water blow. You can enjoy your kids sacer game a little more .

next next week. Their fake .

water, they like water bottles, but the bottom of screws, and you stick a beer bottle up in there and screw the bottom on. And so yeah, so that you have, yeah you called, did you call one up?

Uh, I think so. It's called sneaky booze at a thirty six water bottles diversion safe, stainless steel portable coffee. No, this is just to put like you're unmentioned .

ables in oh and .

IT looks like this is not to put. But why couldn't you just get a water bottle that built to hold carbonated .

beverages and we locate .

that you're beverage of choice into the water bottle?

No, I don't know. Yes, you can do that. yes.

sure. All kinds of stuff like this. I think somebody has like a split divider, one, two. Or you put coke one side and you know, yeah, verbal on the other.

whatever.

Oh yeah. And there's a little switched that flips IT x solo or you .

could mix IT like .

shaking .

that third logic.

logic pro seven one is out. And I love that apple still is not charging for upgrades to logic and final cut, right? They just keep adding things to these. And if you paid for a decade ago or whatever you're you're on the list, you know you're good yeah yeah.

I don't use logic for the show anymore, but I absolutely use IT for recording music and also it's my it's my APP for the studio when I have live rehearsals, which has the added benefit of, hey, you wanted record that quick, sure, hit the button and boom, you're good to go. But I I use IT to just make sound come out of speakers and other things. Logic pro seven one adds two features, that functional features that I have wanted for a long time.

One is you can finally reorder channel strips in the mixer. So if if you have channels is super easy to just select channel strips, even non a Jason channel strips, and just move around that a game changer, way easier than the other way of having to do IT in the tracks area. So if you're using IT as a mixer, you can just drag the things around.

You don't have to go to the tracks area anymore. And number two, perhaps you even bigger for me is you can search for plugging by name. You don't have to know.

Okay, this is I got to go to audio units and isotope and arx ten voice dino x eleven. Now voice in noise, you just searched for R X eleven and boom, IT comes up. That's not their lead feature, but those are my lead features.

Their lead feature is a cool reverb unit that they call the quantum simulator. This is used in studios around the world to create reverb sounds that actually sound like specific rooms or specific room types, as opposed to, here's a plate river ver, here's a chAmber river. This is using models to say, here's what IT would sound like in a room with these kinds of reflections and that sort of thing.

So that's the quantity room similar. But the other two, the reordering changes strip, searching for plugs. Those are the game changes to me. So just wanted to share that fun. Shall we we have to follow up cool stuff found from from Bruce and the one from Bruce maybe relevant here.

He said in the last episode, listen roding about their twenty seventeen imac and what you thought they should do as IT with IT as IT ages and can't run the latest macos, Bruce says, as these older mac age and the highest Operating system that IT run gets out of date, a geeky way to deal with this is to use open core legacy patcher. And I know we've talked about this on the show before, and I always dismiss IT and we mentioned, but he just doesn't stick in my head. Bruce says there were many hacks over the years of people trying to allow older max, most of which have stopped working.

O C L P open legacy patcher is about the closest thing to a computer. Miracle that i've seen is this is what Bruce is sing. I'm using IT at my twenty seventeen, twenty seven, eight imac, primarily because I needed to run the latest version of final cut pro and older mac S S wouldn't allow IT and he's able to do IT like that to me.

Is the like the selling point of this like okay, if the software you need to run, it's not just checking the box of, hey, i'm running the current OS, but you can't do anything with IT this actually he's saying final cut pro, which is a fairly resource intensive APP, is OK running on the new O S V A O C L P. So I think we need to remember this thing, not, I need to remember IT not dismiss IT. So have you have .

you ever used IT out? No, usually upgrade before that day. I mean, fair, you have a really old mac. If you if you run in that thing.

probably it's twenty seventeen.

I I have a twenty and and I feel like it's only because only because .

of being entitled to to apple silicon switch. I think ten years with computers nowadays, accepting that switch are is, is, is the right age. So twenty seventeen and of itself doesn't seem old to me IT. But that switch, obviously obvious lately, some things before their time, I think so. Yeah.

my mind and l maazel l run a great and I plenty reason for another couple years, but I would imagine in two years i'm going to be ready like once once yes, I can get the latest Operating system and proba dumping.

Yeah that make sense. Yeah yeah, yes. Yeah yeah. That's it's a good, good time for .

but my observation is and IT correctly, if i'm wrong and if you work with PC more than anybody here, but I think but is a the max just seemed to left much launder .

grade cycles than than both pcs.

Yeah, I think that's still mostly true. I think it's more because apple, I believe, and I have a turbo check this, but i'm pretty sure apple does a Better job with Operating system supporting older and older machines than windows even does currently. They're getting Better though. I mean.

all of its getting Better. And my sons game in where is like four years old and he's that's a complete new mother board and all. Yes, that's a.

of folks yeah well, that's that's been true for a lot of reasons for for a little while now. Yes, yes, one one last cool stuff found that a follow up from a previous episode ony reminds us in ten sixty three, we had tons of great info on window management for macos fifteen. An application he says that is similar to move that you mentioned is a Better snap from full livia and Better snap tool.

Let you move and resize any window to standard or custom locations with hot corners, hot zones, key combos. It's extremely configure available on the mac APP store and uh, so we will put a link to that. The shoots too.

Yeah, this I know what we talked about this one before two, but it's easy to kind of get the routine of the ones we use and forget about the ones that we don't. But this one deserves deserves to be to be considered. So yes.

there's a lot of great tools out there. Now it's too like a kids hard when someone wants you to recommend just one because like everyone is kind of unique and has its own little features yeah that looks like that. So I think you just got to try out figure out .

actually yeah for hanging out that everybody make sure to check out. Maki, give up. Come, I give away so you can see what our december giveaway is.

Ah I also this might be premature, but I feel okay about IT. I want to begin thanking the folks who are sponsoring us for CS and allowing the trip to to actually work. And the first sponsor that came in is, of course, none other then the folks at bombs software with carbon copy planer A K A ccc backup.

So big thanks to them for stepping in and there will be more will share those as they as they come in. But but yeah yeah, i'm thinking ccc is like I I haven't checked my email while we're doing the show, but i'm pretty sure they're in. And I get safe to say i've said that I might now now if they're not have to do now, they have to be right.

Yeah, exactly. Now they're looked bad. No, no, no. If if people there's many reasons people can't do sponsorships and timing and all that we had, it's always fine.

So we love the folks that are able to currently sponsors, and we also love the folks that if sponsored, like last year, ccc was also the first on board to sponsors for our city trip. And those trips aren't possible without you time investment and certainly financial investment to pay for the whole trip. So and we we tried to be pretty fair with our sponsors.

We don't look at them this huge profit centers or anything. We just need to get our cost offset. The trip is a smooth and silky yeah thanks running out.

Thanks to cash fly for providing all the bandwidth. Get the show from us to you. Check out adam show the day you film podcast.

Well, maybe i'd like to start by wishing people retroactively a happy thanksgiving hope IT was great and the donkey caught.
