Yeah I I always have I always have water in my water bottle. There is always an appropriate amount hydration in my body. I'm never getting a poxy a or a box.

They told you, you get a cramp if you drink too much water. We used to have. Why do they have marathon runners?

The worst? But we used to have. Remember when they have the squeak bottles? IT wasn't even like you couldn't get a sip. IT was a little noisy that you freeze IT in spray.

I never played sports.

Parents of grade school kids trying to find the baLance between personal hobby and real life, where kids and all of their activities come first and our hobbies come at night into the wee hours of the morning. So this is the night before I host the big telethon for the teacher's institute for the double R L. Hopefully, we've done a good enough job letting you all know it's .

Yeah you don't know. Big decent amount of planning went into this. I tried to add a little bit more to the idea, like a telethon, make IT a little bit more fun than just us all hanging out and give us your money, right?

I mean, obviously, he goes to a worthy, valid cause. I don't think anyone questions that. So on its own merits, no problem. We should have no problem making money for the teacher's institute. But there is, I think, a wealth of knowledge in the amateur o community that we would like to pull out in our huge block of time that we are going to have for this live stream and get a lot of early, smart people on the air in the form of our live stream to talk you all about the different things.

Now amateur radio offers a lot of stuff who you talk about the past, but I think it's can be fun to hear IT from other hams and some of the friends that we know in the air. With that said, the title of today's show topic is bringing youth in the amateur dio. So IT goes back to that core concept of what the teachers institute does.

You've heard me probably give me give you my little five minute elevator speech on what the teacher's institute does, and don't want anyone to tell you again. So the whole goal of this and and I think Steve k five V T A, A teacher coming from the world of teaching, realized really quickly that outsiders are not necessarily welcome in most classrooms. The society we live in today, they don't just give anybody can't belonged to come to a school and .

just start talking about to you as a parent can barely onto a campus now yeah like that the kids had a jog up and thank you to everybody who do. Oh god, I not expect a our our podcast FM to come out the way that they did in support of the boys. I think they were in second and third place in terms of fundraisers from the school and um I guess the second and second because they they're tight, they raise the same amount, right uh and they were only beat because the the school haven't met its fundraising goal and one family said he will make up the difference and they ended up that like three hundred dollars .

We do appreciate IT um but even for that last year's fun run that they did, the the families who wanted to see the kids run were stuck behind a fence yeah this year I think there was enough complaints going you can ask families to donate and not allowed their families to come cheer the kids on right? And so they had limited the number of volunteers that could volunteer at each hour and when when parents got upset and they started calling the principal, complaining that there weren't enough volunteer spots, they open up like ten more volunteer spots per hour, continued to get complaints.

And then the principal finally said, just you guys can come in. We're we're going to put up we're going to put up safety cos and cautious tape. And you cannot cross the caution tape, right? But do do you see the level of limitations just for parents?

And it's not even like the educating process is watching them run around in a circle. Yeah what is not even like that, you know whatever. But anyway, there's a ton of limitations on just having anyone go onto a campus.

And if you're like me and have been in a situation where you try to explain to people what amateur radio is, just some muggle on the street, then you already know how difficult that could be to get someone to give you the keys of the castle, if you will, to allow you to go into a classroom and teach kids, right? It's not something that you just walk in and do that. It's gotto have a foot in the door.

The t is also have A A syllabus where they've planned on how to meet educational goals for the year. So when they bring somebody on campus, right, it's either you got to support whatever that, that curriculum is trying to accomplish.

where you go with this, yeah but also they've got ta tie IT into something and there's actually not that much that you can tie all of IT into like at the high school level. sure. You're talking maybe the the science or .

tech base class, I mean, maybe history to a certain degree if the history deep like covers the industrializing of the amErica or or worldwide, like radio display, a part of the telegraph, but even then like how much how much of a food who are going .

That's exactly what this whole thing is about, by giving essentially free education to teachers about what amateur dio is, and connecting IT with the broader steam universe and providing them with technology that they can take home, along with lesson plans and different ideas that they can work with at their home schools. IT gives them the ability to fold amateur radio into their day today syllabuses that glyn mentioned. This is the, from my point of view, the most effective way. If you really want to hit the kids, like find .

it's true is true. But this this is always felt like, yes, this is exactly what we're supposed to be doing. Take a, take the middle man out, make the teacher the ham, and then give them the ability to explore the space with the students.

If you are an amateur Operator and you wanted to reach out and get involved, needs you going to be some of the Better ways that you could potentially support getting the youth on the air. And and i'm saying youth, we're going to focus on on the youth. This isn't necessarily where I feel my channel best alliance to bring people into the air, which is you know the later twenty thirty somethings, forty some things with expendable incomes that can kind of play around with the hobby. Those are the people that are kind of like my channels focus have .

basically said something like just based on the way if if your child is a combined type A D H D, and the way that typically presents in girls is in attentive type， which means there they're more like ben versus Edison, just so you can tell the difference. So in an intent of type doesn't really have as much of the hyperactivity or impulsive veness of actions you mean.

And if you have a combined type child IT IT just may not work very well, because girl scouts may not see the same types of behavior, whether because the cabin type, uh, really is A A lot of boys that are diagnosed have combined type, right? So now that is open to girls for scouting america. If you're having hard time with girl scouts, come on over to scouting amErica because a half of half of both of our kids stands like both ben and Edison ones. Dds are nor diverted easily have right now. And I had said that in the forum, and a bunch of people agreed with me, and then the girl scout me, and they were big, mad, and they were like, well, I and keeping minds getting amErica has an entire module for training leaders on on leading nor divergent .

And that is obviously the radio maria badge and the electronics mariaba ge. And you can, although I don't exactly know the process, but you can sign up to be a merit badge advisor. That is still something that you can do in a matter radio Operator. And you can set aside time on like a weekend, maybe a couple of weekends to train the scouts in these different mariaba ge areas. If you wanted do this, I would recommend reaching out to the district level of the cutting organization or listen to next week's podcast, where actual scouts that are familiar with this will correct me and tell me the right way to do this.

But i'm sure that if you wanted to volunteer your time to be an advisor or a mentor for a mary badge, that is actually probably one of the the best way still available to do that for the kids who are going to be engaged and and want to know the information, right? So consider that you could also um so pacific on I use the I used I talked about pacific on a couple weeks ago. They had a couple of meeting rooms allocated for these marriages ges.

And so that club that puts on pacific on might know a way that at least in their area, that you could get signed up to be a councilor, or maybe you could reach on to say, like, hey, what did you guys do? So I could replicate that in my own council's territory because, because amErica has different territories, they are not necessarily broken up by county, right? So we have like the P O peo district that we're in, which is not necessary L A county, which is also its own group of scouting.

So keep that in mind. It's not broken up by county lines. So know F Y I. So school clubs, I still, I still think that there is an avenue for amateur radio mentors. There are school clubs that still exist. These are often going to be at the high school level, if you can find them. But more likely than not, it's going to be at the age level.

And so the good news there is that they have a call sign that they call sense attached with some kind of a means to contact them as well as they might also be a filleted with an amateur radio club in their adjacent area. And if they are, then you might want to join that club. Maybe your club already has a school club that they are affiliated with or some kind of an outreach that you can participate in.

So if you're interested in that, school clubs are always generally connected in some capacity to a local club of other amateur s that they sometimes do events with other things. So if that's the case, check out your local amateur radio clubs for their level of outreach and see if you can participate that way. I think that's a fantastic way to go as well.

Now as always, there are topics of amateurs, dio, that I think appeal to Younger, Younger individual. So satellite, satellite communication, I think appeals to Younger stem focus kids. So here's an idea.

And you probably need to do this with a club. You could do this with a couple of your ham friends. You you decide how you want to go about this, but you could post a facebook event for your city on some of the facebook groups. You could possible even reach out to the city if they have a stem day or something that is like, we have, its surreal s we have a great library and they may have an event where they're looking for science, experimental and other kinds of things like that.

We have something in southern california, I guess maybe it's mostly lost Angeles, but it's called city of stem. And it's a whole weekend where all of these science based organization, either um they have a venturing that weekend or they come and exhibit at uh whatever the main location is for city of stem yeah .

so you could be a satellite Operator and say, hey, i'd like to demonstrate with everybody how low earth satellites work for transmitting information in data well, that's a that just right there. Like if you put that in the first line of an email, wow, that's super cool. Hey, i'd like to come and show how a Young people, anyone could use a radio receiver to receive nower weather images.

Wow, what a cool tag line, right? I'd like to come and demonstrate how from my radio, I can communicate to other countries. Yeah, you know, things like that.

I saw again, i'm going to go to pacific on. I was a great example. They had to get on the area station with a huge television, like a thirty four White Green television that they had connected to a computer.

And on that screen they were showing gid tracker on my life shames, you know, that shows the ah shows the country. You see all the lines, the people that can hear me. So they put that on that huge T.

V. And then someone was explaining that, oh, i'm transmitting. And though all those little dots with the lines connecting IT are the people that hurt me, right? That's how my my power that i'm transmitting from this wire in tana or whatever, is being heard all over the place.

I think S, S, T, V. To A A Young sons, probably one of the most fascinating things, because the idea that the airwaves could be transmitting an image is a mind blowing.

I did that. I know I talked about this before. In the past, when I did a boys and girls club talk, I did exactly that.

I took a picture of everybody was like a cell e and I said, okay, i'm going to take this image and i'm going to send IT to my radio, and i'm going to let the radio transmitter this image, and i'm going to pick IT up on this other radio. But their solution was that all these england who just hack these geosynchronous satellite, we don't speak their language. They don't speak our language. And there's a fun little scene where he comes back to a life, and he started doing this, a clicker noise thing and a tax bread spinner. He basically eats IT immediately. He gets taken .

well, don't think he gets taken out and they pick up his dead corps with the tensile and then thrust him. And as the glass starts to talk to bill paul m in the president and basically bulb homans, like, i'm a good president, is there a peace we can figure out? Can we figure how we can live together and benefit mutually from each other? And the aliens like, no, I want you to die.

Like the, these are the best aliens you could ever have in a movie. Like, they're the ultimate enemy. We can all be united against them.

And he says, what, you get off the floor, you're going to get gna catch cold, going to catch your death the cold, and is like what you say, oh my god, my dad is a genius .

there's so advance. They hack your satellite and you're going to somehow create a virus that takes them down and that .

you even can speak their computer language. How are you going to get interface with there anything .

And then, sure enough, the next scene is there are all have around this, this fighter plane, and they ve got a pepsi can on IT and goes back to the guy who shot up that alien row. good. And jeff goldman says, can you shoot that? can.

And he looks the president and like, you can. And then he fires that the can. And because the forest field, the bullet didn't starts everywhere and everybody, all the important characters, and basically the most important people in the entire earth, this point could take out.

I I have to say, we mentioned that there was a shortage of pilots because of the original counter attacks. So they were taking everyone right. and. There's an understanding this kind of a suicide mission, right? They're completely this .

is a as play as biggest hang up with the entire movie .

and the vice president has died, the first lady has died actually, which is what makes billman just i'm .

but he gets in. What of the plays you would never, ever allow? The president of the united states .

You would use a bomber to drop a bomb on something that the point was there .

And when that happened, that's when the jolly Roger get the school on cross bone starts playing, which we also had a moment saying, how did he interface the A V system of the alien? Like, how does he do so much?

How does he figure all this out? Like, how did all of this happened? And so they launched, literally a warhead into this of five.

So this is tough because the likelihood of aliens existing is probably one they must exist. Wouldn't a hold on? I didn't mean that in one in our scaling sense.

I meant that, like binary sense, they must exist like you. We cannot the in an infinite universe of possibilities, there must be intelligent life. sure. But then to factory that this intelligent life is so specifically helbon on reaping the resources of every planet IT goes to. Then they also find a planet of unique and different life and said, like, no, we got to destroy those people and suck all the resources.

What we've been doing IT throughout the solar system.

that doesn't make the decision point any different. I'm saying that the fact that there is an alien race whose entirety assistance.

what if they're just future us?

I think I was like a twelve A M or one am message going on a tie RAID, because he ran into me, the carpet bagger guy ran into me at city hall while he was trying to register his scout troop as a city organization.

And I was there on totally different business and I went into the office because there's a counter and then you don't really get to go into the offer section if you're doing something very simple, like registered ting organization or registration for classes. But I had a particularly different issue, and i'm also on a committee.

And so he calls my friend at like twelve one in the morning to go on a tired, a drunk tie RAID about how i'm getting special treatment and how that's completely unacceptable that I was able to like walk around, like I own the place first of all, know I am a confident Walker, don't get me wrong, but I want to walking around like I own the place I like.

of the day, the most important thing to remember is the amount of wire you put the air is your in tanna, and that's the most important part of all of this. So if you have a twenty five foot whip versus a seventeen foot whip, that's effectively why are you putting in the air. So you're always going to a tune that whip for resonance on the frequency you're transmitting on a twenty foot whip.

Maybe we'll get you in thirty meters. I don't know that you'll get you a forty IT, probably won't. But with that, you can definitely tune in twenty meters and be really, really effective on those frequencies and that should be what you're aiming for.

don't when IT comes to telescoping whip, a lot of them are very similar. So alpha anta nz has a very good whip ala anti na alpha's antenna. That's right.

Let me spend your money. So probably in the space that the easiest one to do remote ham radio with because I think that's where you're going with is probably the seventy. no. So seventy six ten is gonna be the most, a Normal feeling radio that you can get. And IT still has the land.

When adapter that you can connect to, you know, you you will have to connect to a cat five, cable, cats six or whatever to your network, and that will allow you to do remote ham radio. The only thing you'll have to consider with that is you're enough to open the ports on your network to be able to connect with remote software, which I did for a long time with my with my seventy six ten. And you'll probably need to consider that the IP least of your home network is going to change, right? So you probably need to set up a VPN, which is ultimately what I had to do as well.

So the VPN is gonna be the way to go and then go through that process to set that up. There is a world of stuff you can do on that radio in the realm of remote ham radio that I think would be you fun and chAllenging, very chAllenging because there's a ton for everybody listening. What i'm talking about is getting more into the geek dom of like networking and remote radio in the sense of like using IT as an appliance.

Like IT is a proper appliance at this point, like we have an intent connected the radio and we're onna connect with remotely of via the internet and all the things that that allows. But there's a striking amount of everything you do that you can do remotely. You can do that with little di controllers or v fo controller.

You can do that with cw adapters, are doing morse code there. There are so many things you can take into wherever you're going into hotel room in a far funk place, still get back to your own radio and be able to communicate through IT whether the thing is really cool. I think that's a fantastic spot were at. But the answer to your question for simplicity sake is the flex radio IT IT is stupid, simple, like IT IT IT makes IT very easy to get all the things running with a very little difficulty and it's ah IT works .

really well.

So if if you don't like smart sdr, you know that whole environment ah there there are some other options, but at the same time, like that is still a very, very good option. Uh and and arguably, if you asked the flex community, I think a lot of them say that the mac implementation of smart sdr is the best implementation of IT. So there you go, alright.

Well, drew continues. Finally, layer, you fall in into the trap. This is exactly why I have my extra. I was chasing pta using a band plan to make sure I was within my privileges.

And I spend the dial in her, the station I did not expect to be able to hear, and got excited and sent my call without looking at the band plan. Is this something we need to be worried about? I don't know. I guess i'm just looking for a reassurance that the amateur banned allocations are relatively safe. Or do we need to get the pitch? Fox, and i'm gna read this.

So let me just say, I I have no, I have no concept of any of this right now. So i'm i'm going to blind.

The fcc took unprecedented steps free the airwaves needed to power five g and other next generation wireless services. This work not only helped to secure amErica ais wireless leadership and bolster competition, but also enable the private sector to create jobs and grow the economy. Recently, the fcc has failed to match th Epace a nd c adence o f t hose s pectrum a ctions. Therefore, the fcc and the new administration should work together to develop a national spectrum strategy that both identifies the specific airwaves that the fcc can free for commercial wireless services and sets an aggressive timeline for agency action.

So I I don't I don't generally disagree with that statement. But at the same time, like the the international tele communications union, IT looks at a lot of those frequencies for inner communication, particularly for the frequencies where those those frequencies will dip into other countries.

But that sounds like he's talking more about high frequency access, particularly those are closer to five g so likely he's not even talking about amateur dio most of time and it's probably not even in his vacuum. I I did was that really project one twenty five? Is that what you said that's I don't like that. I don't like that at all. that's.

Not good. So I I looked this up. Here's what project twenty twenty five says about radio. And this obviously is covering more broadcast radio, international .

This sounds like a person is probably on the same board with personal prepares being able to have a frequency space that allows us to do what we do. But if we don't communicate that with the best foot forward and we don't have someone doing that like that, their job that, that that's something we should be doing if we're not already oh, right now.
