While iOS 18.2 expands Apple Intelligence to more countries and includes features like Visual Intelligence and ChatGPT integration, it falls short of the seamless AI experience showcased in Apple's keynote. Visual Intelligence, while improved, still requires user prompts and lacks features present in the Photos app, like art and plant recognition. Furthermore, the ChatGPT integration feels like a workaround, relying on a third-party app for advanced functionality rather than showcasing native AI prowess.
iOS 18.2 introduces natural language search in Music and TV apps, enabling complex queries like "comedy with Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz." It also adds a two-stage camera control for iPhone 16 users, allowing for focus and exposure lock before capturing a photo, though its usability is debated.
Users can log into their ChatGPT Plus account or use the free tier. When Siri encounters a query it can't handle, it defaults to ChatGPT. A user can disable the confirmation prompt for faster access. A useful hack is to preface requests with "using ChatGPT" to force Siri to utilize the service, even for general knowledge or image creation.
Sora's free tier limits videos to 5 seconds, while the $200/month Pro subscription extends this to 20 seconds. The platform struggles with realistic human and object interactions, often producing bizarre results. While OpenAI watermarks Sora-generated videos, it's easily circumvented by cropping. Concerns exist regarding the potential for misinformation and deepfakes due to Sora's accessibility.
Despite having the resources and technology, Google was hesitant to fully embrace AI-powered search due to concerns about misinformation. This allowed Microsoft to partner with OpenAI and capitalize on the growing demand for AI-driven search and content creation tools like ChatGPT.
Google has introduced Gemini 2.0, a multimodal AI model capable of handling audio, visual, and text data. It will power AI overviews in search results starting next year. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has expressed confidence in Gemini's capabilities, suggesting a side-by-side comparison with competitor models. Additionally, Google has announced a breakthrough in quantum computing, achieving significant advancements in error correction and processing speed.
Google's quantum computer demonstrates the ability to solve complex problems exponentially faster than traditional supercomputers. While promising for scientific advancements, this also poses a threat to current encryption methods, necessitating the development of post-quantum cryptography.
OpenAI, initially a non-profit research lab, shifted its focus to commercial endeavors. Its partnership with Microsoft, primarily for Azure compute credits, includes a clause allowing OpenAI to operate independently upon achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Speculation exists that OpenAI may attempt to redefine AGI to expedite this separation, though their continued reliance on Microsoft's resources complicates matters.
Jason regularly uses OpenAI's Whisper for transcription and ChatGPT for various tasks, including generating titles and descriptions for articles. Stephen primarily utilizes ChatGPT integrated with Shortcuts for automation, such as formatting show notes and generating content ideas. Both express limited use of Apple Intelligence and other AI tools like Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity due to integration limitations and workflow disruptions.
Explore iOS 18.2 features including Visual Intelligence and ChatGPT integration, OpenAI releases Sora publicly with mixed results, Google is taking big swings with quantum chips and Gemini 2.0, plus, a surprise about CES!
