it's it's a fun at tech week, at least for me because as I follow apple news, a fair amount of that, but we've got a fair amount of all sorts of other stuff. And as we always do, let's start with the wickets. Indonesia has halted the sale of apple's iphone sixteen, citing apple not fulfilling local investment requirements.
People can still use iphone sixteen models. It's not ban to use an iphone sixty model, and that's also not ban to buy one outside of the country. They just can't be sold within indonesia itself. The government aims to go its tech sector by pushing foreign companies to contribute to local production and development instead of importing devices directly.

indeed, I agree. Alright, so uh, apple kicked off its promised IT promised last week that I was going to give us a week of announcements. So no, if if they are going to do one every day, todays is of the day monday.
As we're recording the m four I mac offers up to twenty five percent faster performance, enhanced graphics support for apple intelligence and AI functions. In general, twenty four inch model looks just like the old bun. The one that's currently on sale now includes USB c accessories, ies wifi seven support starts at one thousand two hundred nine hundred dollars.
So that's in line with what I am acx are going for already. But that also now features thunderbolt support options for in gigs or more RAM a nano texture to lame a twelve make a pixel web camp and is set to ship on november eighth. Now Allison, i'm in i'm in the the market for a new mac.
Many um I was hoping today would be the mac many day not and IT might not be at all this week. I'm not going to get my hopes up, but i'm pretty sure. But what do you think about what do you think about IT? Do you have an imac right now?
No, we've kindly got enough imac train ever since they made IT harder to to use IT as an external display when I got older and that sort of things. So we've kind of separated, Steve says, have IMAX. And now he's going to max studio in the studio display.
So when he upgrades the max studio, he doesn't have to throw away a perfectly good display. I I want, I want to contention with what you said. These are totally different colors. Sera there the exact same colors, but in fresh sheds of Green, yellow, orange, pink, purple and blue, along with classics, so are totally different.
totally different. Yeah it's sort of like it's it's like when instagram like good photo, but like, would you like to enhance same photo but is Better like HDR version of yellow? no. So yeah, you're right. There are some subbed differences externally.
Not much of the colors, I guess, are being punched up in the way that you would feel like your yellow imac is slightly different then the one that you've had before if you happen to be upgradient. But you know, these are gray machines. It's really get .
in the love right they're get me in for that's fantastic c IT seems kind of silly that that the only thing with the m four was you know the ipad pro that that seems .
kind of straight, right? Well, yeah, it's that and I think that that's what kicked off the whole rumors of like obviously, the mac line is going to get the m four because they put IT in the ipad pro. They wouldn't just do that for the ipad pro and then just be liking everyone is, you know just just gonna have to deal with, you know m two, m three type type things for everything else.
I I yeah I this is, this is a great machine. I am with Steve on this one. I have a monitor that is pretty great.
It's an asist monitor. I've been using IT for years. It's twenty eight inches.
It's plenty big for the desk that i'm sitting that right now. So it's like I don't need a new display. I want one, sure, but I don't need one. I can discussions with people.
My friend gary is has a twenty seven in chi mac, the classic five K I, mac from twenty seventeen that everybody loved and it's just killing him that he has to throw away. And he's really angry with apple that they're not making another twenty seven inch. And I tried to convince him get this studio display, get a mac mini and you'll be fine and you never have to throw that display again, again, again when it's perfectly good.
But you know what? He's out there right now. He's picked out is twenty.
He's going to get the twenty four entry. I mac, just stay in the imac format. Yes, I just has to decide which fresh shade of color .
he was is IT teal or really cool teal. You know, depends, uh, speaking of apple intelligence, which obviously we haven't done a lot of, but it's been on our minds, what is what is apple intelligence? What is that going to do for the folks who obviously run various platforms such as IOS and ipad OS and macos that would take advantage of this.
So it's now out of beta, at least in part, it's sort of the first roll out of what apple says will be a larger roll out over the next, I don't know, six months, I guess, or so. So yeah, you've got IOS eighteen point one, ipad, OS eighteen point one, sqa fifteen point one on mao s. This is coming first to the us.
And then you've got select english speaking regions with expanded localized support for countries canada, australia, the U. K. Ireland, new zealand and south africa expected in december. And elson, I know earlier before the show started, you were sort of fied. This is a little confusing because then we got word that apple intelligence would start rolling out to eu countries in spring of next year of twenty twenty five. And I think what IT sounds like to me is that if you're in the us, you're kind of get you're getting what you're getting the other english speaking regions that might be able to benefit from localized support that's rolling out next, I said other languages and other regions rolling out next year.
So I think there there's another subtle ty that really messes this up. Um the reason apple isn't giving apple intelligence to the eu is because of the did the digital al markets act and the iphone was judged to be a gatekeeper out of the D M. A.
And so they were worried that they force to allow interaction with their competitors. However, the mac was not dominant enough to be a gatekeeper. So my understanding is a the u is going to get apple intelligence on the mac earlier, and it's just on the iphone and the ipad mine. I know when the ipad falls in, but the iphone for sure won't be getting IT until later. So I think where this tangle languages, all because of confusion with with the laws, are going to do about IT.
I mean, that I would, you know, IT is confusing. IT is very confusing. What was also confusing to me else in this morning, and as i'm looking at my all, it's ready.
Oh my god. Sh, that is funny. Okay, so here here's the stories. Oh, so this morning and I was like, okay, let's i'm in the beta program on I O S, but i'm not in the developer program.
My colleague on apple vision show, alan Rivera, is in the developer program. So SHE got apple intelligence early in Beata. M, so she's already been through this process.
And SHE explained in a previous show how, you know the ressort of a weight less. But I didn't last that long. It's at that.
So this morning I had kind of forgotten about all that. This morning I was like, oh, cool. I will install what the dog. Then I had to do a unch of other show stuff that was not related to this.
And I thought, what i'll do as I eat lunch before the show is go back to the iphone and look at up an intelligence, you know, and it'll be really fresh for our conversation we're having right now. And I kind of screwed myself because I was waiting for some sort of like a push notification or you like here's how you talk on apple intelligence. And I never got IT because I had to sign up for the weight list, but I never got to push notification about that either.
IT was incident IT wasn't hard to find. But once I did that, I was I home in, you know, I really, I could know, saved myself a couple of hours, however, and we were joking like it's onna happen in the show. IT did.
Now here we are. I'm gonna choose. I'm not going to do this right now because we have to talk about.
But so I did do a little hack to to get in earlier. I didn't want to do any other data, but on friday, I did the IOS consumer bea, the developer beta, did the got on the weight list to get into apple intelligence, got IT. And then I played, I played with a little bit under the beta, but then this morning I just turned off the beta updates and download the regular one. So I just snacked my footing and got ahead of the line and came back. But IT sounds like the line was like maybe two hours.
IT was probably about two hours. I mean.
what is that? That is weird. D that you have to be in .
a weight list though, but I was maybe more like three. I I sort of equate this to apple. Just been like, it's like a freeway on ramp.
You know it's it's like know if everyone's going to learn at the same time everyone suffers. But if we just make sure that we let one at that time, everybody, let's all be cool. Then then apple has has a cleaner villa and fewer complaints about probably a good idea, probably a good idea.
Alright, so moon moving onto tiktok alternatives, you might say, oh my gosh, do do we need at another tiktok? Well, that your mileage may vary on that one. But a new alternative to tiktok is called loops. And IT has sign ups open.
Now IT was developed by by a team of former tiktok employees who emphasize that they were looking for a creativity and community engagement, but also addressing concerns about privacy and user safety that people might not necessarily feel like they have with tiktok. Maybe you do, but if you don't, this is supposed to be an alternative to that. The platform will offer features like video editing tools, customizable profiles targeting users who are looking for that alternative to whatever current option they have, whether tiktok or something like that.
You can sign up at loops. P video, which I did this morning, haven't in yet. Uh, eleven, nine were both waiting. But a few other note here, you have to be thirteen years or older or say that you are, you know, to do anything following, like liking, commenting, sharing your own content.
And then part me, a trust score system has a video from, if i'm a user with a low trust score, IT might be moderated before IT is published altogether. It's a little on yeah now it's a little unclear, you know like who's doing that? How big is the team? Why is my trust or low you know what have I done in the past but that's supposed, you know obviously Foster at a pleasant community.
We have a high score. Might be immediately the way that you would be on another platform. Loops is not integrated with activity pub at this time.
It's looking to be, says the team. But activity pub is power in mass. Don and pixel fed and peer tube and a variety of other federal SE apps.
So this is this is early days for sure. Um but but yeah, I wanted to get your thoughts also and I don't know how much of a tiktok user you are. I A I am a casual consumer of tiktok. I my account has like one cat video on IT. But but I but think I think competition is good.
I am addicted to tiktok and which can be really controversial. Here's i'm a big fan of based on and I like the fact that it's not knowing by any company and there's no algorithm. The people I see or the people I follow, if somebody boost something, I get to see IT because somebody boosted IT, not because the algorithm ded.
Hey, this will make her angry. And so i'm completely and totally against the algorithm and i'm away from twitter. I'm all I asked on.
Its fantastic. But the best thing about tiktok is the algorithm because I don't actually follow very many people. I just like this stuff.
If I like and I get more of this stuff I like, so I set there watching, oh, there's that an account the dogs were good today. I forget with the real name of the account is but it's fantastic you got to find that watch, definitely follow that when. But I just I see cool disability stuff and accessibility stuff. I should say I see um I kitten and puppies and ducks and ducks with kittens and it's just a joyful, wonderful place.
Yeah I I think you know anybody is just sort of like our tiktok is a bunch of people dancing. You really don't you don't understand the breath of the content and you like tiktok and even you mention like good dogs. I mean, I August my dog has an instagram account.
He doesn't never tick talk, but he has an instagram account. Therefore, we get a lot of dog stuff served to us over on instagram, which is wonderful all in its own way. But yeah, tiktok is I have friends who are uh my age or you know around there um extremely intelligent and they get their news off of tiktok. And the first time someone said that to me, I was like, how, what do you mean I do not possible and is a great person.
I follow. And I get some news about what's going on in kanker from that guy. But in general, I don't. I have been actually liking some fun political videos lately. So I get a little bit of that.
But as far as news, news, not really, but it'll be really interesting to see what loops can do where IT sounds like maybe they are wouldn't be an I don't know that will be that will be interesting if IT serves me up happy kitten and puppies and dogs and and funny, then i'm all in and I I will probably give that a try, but i'm still waiting. I want to get my invitation back. They said they would send IT to me and they didn't.
I know we'll definitely circle back when we're able to play around with looks a little bit. But before we move on the federal S, I thought this was kind of an interesting in stat, more than eleven point six million as in the federal s in general at this point. I know that that's not tiktok numbers, but it's still a lot of people who are interested over one million monthly active users.
You know see, you've got a lot of folks who are using IT regularly with master on at around sixty five percent of all activity. So lions share still going to master on a lot of a lot of people at one point looking for twitter alternatives. Just what what else is out there? It's social natives. I suppose .
it's with less notes. Well, notes?
Yeah well, yeah. I mean, you're probably not I don't know. yes.
So but the nice thing of that, the federal ses, it's designed to give you more choice. It's less of salacious in general. Yes, that's that's how I I see IT to. There's nothing pushing .
the hatred up unless you're following people who are hatred people.
true. Yeah, yeah. It's definitely it's really go and who you're hanging out with on social networks that has a lot to do IT.
So I think choice is good. That's where we will leave that one. What do you want to hear us talk about on the show? Is a federal stuff.
Is that more about apple intelligence? Is that something else? One way to let us know is in our sub reddit, you can submit stories and vote on them at read dom slash r slash daily techno show.

So Allison, you you say you lose your voice nearly every year. It's happened to me as well. It's obviously problematic when you've a podcast or somebody who speaks out loud um for your job all that often.
Last year, you used eleven labs to create a synthetic voice. Um but when that happened again to you this year um and I know you're still you're still coming off of IT right now that you sound great. You tried some different services. So so let's talk about those services.
I think joe has a little clip that he wanted to play of exactly what he sounded like last week. Let's let play that hd take over from here. In olden days, IOS kept everything's sand boxed in a way that apps we're allowed to reach outside of their own data to open individual files. But with the apply name files up in an API, I do allow a human to do the picking.
Apps can now open files directly on IOS. That is you know.
it's not bad at all. I mean.
you might be like, I wouldn't you know the intonation is a little I would not know the difference that that sounds like .
you yeah so I was searching for a new way to do IT. So I also ChatGPT to give me some recommendations. And they recommended two different services, well, of several different ones.
But the ones I chose to look at, where resemble the AI and played at hd, resembled that. A, I was had a one dollar plan, a starter plan, just for one month you could get a four dollar. So I figured that would be fun there.
A handful of free, rapid voices and one professional voice. The professional voice was amazing. The problem with resemble I was that they had very inconsistent rules like they said, okay, this, you have to give me a wave file or an mp three file to train the voice so I gave you a way.
IT said, no, you encoded the wave file wrong. Okay, here's an M P, three file. And IT says, no, we don't take M P three files like on screen at the same time to noaa. Cations once said, we take M P three files. And then when I gave in an M, P three files, said, no, we don't take mp three files.
So ended up taking the M P three and encoding up with a different application as a wave and ended up up taking that um IT also will only transcribe three thousand characters at a time. In the article I needed IT to read with thirty thousand uh characters. So if I was to use this one I would have had to uploaded IT in seven different chunks.
IT was also not real clear how to get IT to fix mistakes. And IT IT kind of cuts words off. And I want to play a little sample here of of what this, once out of, like, I think, resemble A A.
I was a even Better. So listen to this one. The best way for me to described cross stitching to nerds is that it's like eight bit graphic. You create a picture using different coloured threads where each cross tech is a little block. Making a diagonal line of these little blocks would be a jacket line, just like in a bit graphics so you can hear out IT cut IT off but it's still IT sounded really .
good IT sounded good I mean, now i'm now i'm listening ed for IT so i'm like, yeah was not quite old but yeah no I mean that that is if somebody's IT also depends on I think a lot of this depends on the content that you're pulling out there. This is like, hey, this is informational and I lost my voice this week. This is a great, great tool. It's a great option for you if it's something that's supposed to be lake, oh, the AI wasn't as personable and funny and you making jokes as I would have done then that sort of a different kind of conversation, right?
Well, IT was interesting when IT with resemble I one of the things that asked was, what is this going to be used for? And there was a hope in different options. And what of them, like IT, was games or social media.
But one of them was podger. So I chose podcast. And then I said, what kind of a voice do you want? And there were a bunch of different, you know, a expressive or theatrical, and but one of them was explainer.
And most of my work, i'm teaching people things, so that's what I chose. So I was able to tell IT just a little bit in that way, but and when I switched over, I just kept having problems with resemble eye. At first, IT took me too long to work with that tool, so I switch over and try to play out ht, and that's when that actually made IT into the show.
The main thing was that was easier to throw in the whole text because I was able to throw the whole thirty thousand characters into the text. And then what I did was that broke IT up in a paragraphs. And so you can see, um i've got pictures in the blog post that linked in the show notes where you can see that I broke up up into these separate paragraph s and for each paragraph I had settings for uh intensity, stabilization, speed and IT.
So had these different settings for each one and how quickly I would run IT. Now IT was tedious because, like thirty seven times, I had to go in and set those settings for each paragraph. But if I was able to just keep regenerating until I got one I liked, the one that you already heard was was from played at H.
T. And I did end up using that. Sometimes the voice would go bad. And then going to play a little clip of what I mean by go bad. What are you talking .
about? You, so good is .
like throwing. I don't know what that was that was like.
So sort of David lunch like me.
IT was terrible.
You don't want that. So yeah, so you could listen each one and .
regenerate and get the Better one. I don't know why I went bad like every tenth one, but this service was thirty nine dollars for just to do a single month. In general, I think IT IT was a faster process.
But overall, I would say this is the kind of tool that's useful for maybe somebody paid by the hour, because IT was tedious. IT took a long, long time to do this. I mean, this way to take me ten minutes to read out loud IT took me proudly two hours to create with play out hd well.
And I think that that's that's what a lot of us are grappling where there's like you hear all these stories about like, oh, you know, ai is going to make everything so much easier for all of us and it's like, well, in your experience of doing this, IT was an interesting in experiment.
But would you not have just had a guest hosts, you do something for you? I guess that depends, right, if you really think, you know, no, this is my show and and I wanted use tools to make IT if if I truly have lyn jats or otherwise, i've lost my voice, so I can't be there. You know, I wanted to be me.
What do you think? Well, I have a frequent contributor who goes by the moniker jail from the north woods. And SHE actually offered to read one of my articles.
So my articles are pared before the show. So somebody would have to read my words in their voice in order to be a guest toes, unless I gave them a weaken advance notice. And I didn't know a weak in advance that I was gonna no, no voice on that day.
So it's kind of a catch twenty two there. If i'd had some content, a lot of people get content in the king on ahead time. I don't bother with that.
Everything just comes out on that sunday night. And so I think I would do IT again based on the fact that I did IT before and I did at this time. And i'm thinking, twenty, twenty five, you're gona hear me talking about how I did at the next time.
There you go there are you go um in the male bag um we have something um that actually speaks exactly to this to this topic either commented on our discussion last week about real estate odds that sounded suspiciously notebook. Lm like eva rights, recently you featured that ad that was AI produced, and everybody seemed in agreement that IT sounded engaging and relatively real.
Same for that trial, D, T, S, podcast that you guys made, which we did with no book. I am as well know, we all sort of went like, huh, this is pretty good. Oh no, our jobs to take that was the first run that had good energy and sounded real.
But even as says, I have to admit, from my point of view, they were both over the top to the point of irritation. Maybe a european perspective prefers less high hyper ably, but I think it's safe to say that currently what's been produced as targeted at an an american year, eva says i'll personally always prefer meat suit people to AI produced content and will actively avoid IT if given the chance. You know even that is a very good point.
That is a very good point because there was definitely a style that we started to make fun of after well because after the the initial notebook alum example where we were like, well, that sounds good. We tried a few more and we're like, oh, well, that sounds exactly the same. Okay, I see the exact same cats of the two doing the exact same thing. And maybe that is a very regional thing that wasn't even going to be, I don't know, rub rub. Well, if you were a in a different region.
well, they use your favorite phrase were in early days, right? Yes, I think it's partly it's certainly gonna get Better and more interesting, at least I hope so.

As long as I have a voice, I will. Well, recently I studied to research paper that looked at the reduction in content created on stack overflow by people helping each other with programing tasks. Basically, it's been IT went down twenty thousand posts in six months after ChatGPT was created when Normally it's been going down about seven thousand posts per year, so twenty thousand and six months.
So the research paper was looking at the effect and whether that really was the effect or whether there was just a correlation without caution. But the reason I bring that up is barbo shots. And I I had a discussion about this on my episode of the new silica ast from episode number one thousand fifteen, linked in the show notes. Of course, about thirty minutes into that episode, you can hear the two of us talk about IT and IT. IT was a really fun discussion with an intelligent person that that I enjoy talking to.
