But IT started getting lapped by other a present type applications. Um you're adding these things that you're not gonna catch up to zoom, you're not gonna catch up the google me, you're not gone to catch up to to teams. So I can applause the effort.

But unfortunately, I think signal, I guess you're still knowing okay. But they have missed their opportunity for that massive growth because other companies that are significant larger than them have already done IT. So the the features are fine um that they are good.

But do do I see people saying, oh, wait, there's a new thing on signal. Let me stop using what I have my company already standardized on to go to signal that we already moved away from because I didn't have features. I don't know that this is going to get those type of customers back.

Yeah, it's it's interesting when we're talking about this. The zoom, zoom security talk is kind of faded away. Remember back in twenty, twenty, especially when zoom was really taken off there, a lot of conversations about whether resume is secure is that a chinese company which is not? But you know, IT has a founder who has chinese ancestry, I think may have been born there.

So there was a lot of dust kicked up around that a you don't hear anybody talking about that anymore. zoom. Zoom seems to have been able to quiet those fears. And that would be the biggest advantage of getting people to switch to signal. How much do you think signal cares though?

They probably care because they they want more users. And here's what I was back in the day. Signal was the thing that was secure.

So people went to IT for security because IT was the thing that was secure. But when when earth said wait to in zone, you need to make this thing really secure because we want to use IT. When the internet, people on internet said, hey, you know, microsoft, you need to make this really secure.

People want to use IT. Same thing with google. You you need to make this secure. People want to use IT. That's when security just became the default and you didn't really look at signal as being something special and no longer what everybody has security and everyone else has all these other features the signal doesn't have.

So that to me, where signal, I think they made some missteps th five, six years ago when they should have men looking at present and things like this. Then as compared to now when you M E O zoom is giant Normal as google, microsoft, they are giant normous companies. Um signal is nowhere near that side.

So this offer has to do something so different than what they're doing that I just don't see that we can do what google can do. We can do what microsoft can do is the reason to make me go back and look at this plan. I thought though.

yeah, yeah. Now the reason I ask if they care is I get the impression that signal knows its body and knows that IT would be a long uphill slog to try to become zoom, to try to compete with teams. Uh, IT may be that signal, very reasonably, is saying, look, there are security minded people who want this feature.

Yes, we'll never get as big as zoom, but we will keep them as subscribers. We will keep them happy and will attract more people who are security minded if we offer this feature. So you know H, I guess what i'm proposing is IT may I may not be that they want to compete with zone so much as they they know their audience, they wanted delivered this feature for them.

That could absolutely be the point of of these features. And IT could also be to wear the signal. Didn't not write this article. Someone wrote the article about signal, said this is what signal looks .

like they're trying to do.

compete with microsoft, compete with google. That me, as you're saying, not even be in the radar. There are just saying here our features that we have customers are saying they need.

So we're going to supply those things through them. Yeah, yeah. As I said, do I think this is going to get net new customers to compete with those big companies? no. But will IT keep people who are already on the platform happy?

I think so. And it's certainly is a good to bring enough new customers to compete with teams or zoom will IT bring enough new customers to justify signals existent as a butin e super secure option. Uh and I know people who use to go probably bristle at be using the word boutique, but ah sadly not everyone cares as much about bulletproof security as as signal users. But super serving those users are smart, right?

IT is smart and um is is smart there. There's no reason for them not to do this. You like if if cost, if there are customers are saying this is what we want, IT makes sense to give customers what they want.

But as I said, I just think that maybe the way the head live was written in in the question think they're going after after zoom. And that's just that going that's just not going to happen. Yeah that's well.

And to be fair, I mean, not everybody was right. And now I think the link we're going to link to is for tech lunch says it's a viable alternative to zoo meat and teams, which is a little less incentive than they're common for them. So i'll believe myself for using the common for zoom language.

But but yeah, I do think this is more of a signal, knows its audience and is super serving the audience, which is which is smart. And signal is a great piece of technology. If you want to be the most seure security messaging, you want to use signals.

So ah you know having this video option maybe not something that you're going to convince large companies to switch over to or even small companies to switch over to, but it's something you can feel good bad of like well, if i'm doing a video conference with with people that I can sway, then I will be able to use this uh, another story kicking around is a the power button on the new mac mini being underneath the mac, many the well, apple has an answer. Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing, greg jaws, we act jaws and senior vice president of hardware engineering john turnest. We're talking to IT home and they pointed out that most people never use the power button.

Like how often do you actually turn your computer on or off with a power button? You, you, we, you generally don't turn that off. And when you do, it's usually just a restart, probably to add an OS update.

You rarely turn IT off. So the power button being in a prime place probably is a waste real estate. Okay, maybe we can agree with that.

Uh, they also said it's easy to reach the button and rub you just tuck your finger underneath. It's not flat against the ground. It's it's in a little bit of a of an angle so you can just reach underneath. impressed. I think I think what they're saying, rob, is everyone's been turning IT on and off wrong.

I hear all those those nice examples of why we're not using IT, right? Here's what I think apple needs to do that. They need to take that apple intelligence and build a chatbot where they channel Steve jobs and before they make sign design decisions, like let's put the power button under the computer or let's put the mouse port under the mouse where you can use IT why you're charging ext ve jobs of fees.

Cool with that and then get the answer back to determine what you want to do. I hear what they're saying. I hear that is not used. But the problem is that even though IT may not be hard to hit the button, if unless you have sauce size fingers like I do um you have to know that is there. So i'm just thinking you have a deathtrap computer that IT IT is very small, but people are literally going to be picking their computer up to figure where is that power.

But ton on this are going to look into the back because that's be yes.

I see a bunch of people in our chat, uh, multiple people not just won, who are saying, well, it's not energy efficient to not shut down your machine. Who are these people who are just using power? I think most people just let their machine go to sleep because sleep mode is is priority power efficient. These days it's IT just barely sips any power. Do you feel the same way?

Um no. Because whenever I get up if I get up from my computer, and I norm coming back to what, I don't shut IT down. But at the end of the day, I shut my machine down every single day.

So for me, this would be OK if you ve got to do IT through the system. But like right now, i've got my nice galaxies right here in front of me. There's a little circle right on the right, right next to the keyboard that when I done, I just put my finger up there in touch IT and IT just goes up, goes, I want to do anything. It's it's almost magic.

It's one thing to that is a good point, which is if you can't get to the power button and you want to to shut down, then you have to go into a menu and find the shut down and all of that. Although some keyboards can can send a power off single as well um but uh you can do that to power IT on. I I do think Steve jobs would prefer there wasn't a power button. Somehow he he would be pushing for them to figure out away for the computer to turn on and off without having to push a button at all. I think .

um that may be true, but this wouldn't win IT. Let's put the here's what we do. Let's put the button on the bottom because everybody will think to look there first to do.

It's got a little ridge just slip here. I mean, anyone who doesn't of large fingers, you just slip your finger. Finally, something was made for people with smaller hands.

if I may, as a person. A mac mini and has been using mac mini specifically for many years and had just recently switched ed to max studio. Um they switched the decide on the of the power button on these models and I could already couldn't find IT and now this can be on the bottom and the stuff on top of my computer IT just seems really incommunicable me as a person or to use of this very similar form factor.

And I am one of the people that leave my computer and all the time, mostly because I brand folding at home when i'm not on my computer, so IT can be helping with is okay, but i've never been a person to shut my computer off every day because i'm used to be in the government where you head to leave IT on overnight for to patches. So I just leave my computers on pretty much all the time. I've got three on right now, my desk.

So so here's the other thing that i've actually seen some people complaining about this is that the make the new magni is so small that you can literally well go to the back of your monitor and the fact that, okay, wait to me after the voco backwards upside down so I can reach around and turn IT .

off when I want you. So a little got the angle, you just slip your finger.

So yes, so you are going to like if you're like me and you have nineteen thousand thousand monitors or you street, you'll ve got to reach .

You ouldn't need a power button at all. Um is kind of where I think he had would go. Maybe that's half where their head was when they're like when nobody uses IT. Anyway, let's include IT, but we don't have to mess up the design by put in summer then when the back nobody sees.

But if people there, there is no power. But you know, there probably still would be a hard reset button because you wouldn't want to have .

So how we're going to be talking about ah just the eu and just some of the rules they have going over going on over there. We're going to start with an effort to comply with the european an union court ruling and what facebook is doing, they are basically facebook ganim gram. They are a the parent company met is offering eu users the option of less personalized ad.

This change is designed to limit the use of personal data a harvested from these platforms for target advertising. Under this new option, users will see ads based on the context of their current session. These ads may also target users based on age, gender and location and are less tailor to individual preferences. Additionally, some ads may be on skiable for a brief period of time, and if you still don't want ads at all, you can still get that that is cutting the Price of the subscriptions from to eight pounds on mobile devices, five additional pounds for am playing pounds of the euros, euros s for each each additional mobile device account.

So so time this one is a is interest resting to me in a couple of ways IT seems like what the european union is saying is that we basically are just going to set the law that you cannot get this type of information on individuals, regardless of whether they up into IT or god, is whether they pay now to get IT. We don't want you using super targeted ads in tracking on our citizens. And IT kind of feels like that's what they're doing.

So like something that meta used to be able to do. They used to be able to track, you know you to the inf degree. They can just no longer do that what they they decided. And when all these laws passed, that, okay, will make A A paid version.

Or you can pay to opt out all all of this, but you can opt in if you want to still get things for free where we're going to still track you, uh, know the way that we always have. Any E U are saying, no, we don't even want that even, you know if they're paying, you're not going to track them. They're not paying, you're not going to track them either.

So to me, this feels like what meta is trying to do right now is they're trying to get in front of these rules because they're still are discussing that they still have not determined or they're not. This is going to be the fix. You know, this is that been accepted yet? I think they're just trying to get in front of what the eu may do and say, what is there? Can we still serve ads, period? Can we can do something to ultimately try to make money on this, on the service they are running here?

Yeah IT starts feel tent about to like you need to just provide your service um for free and not make any money off of IT. To be clear, not that many people will do IT but you can in the eu under this plan should IT get implemented, opt in to be targeted with personalized ads. And i'm sure facebook and instagram will go to great links to convince you that's a wonderful idea.

I get more personalized dads, but IT has to be informed consent under the GDP r, so they have to explain everything that very tracking on you. And that's going to scare a bunch of people off. So probably not a lot of people are going to do that more than you might think.

You might think, no, but he's going to do IT. Turns out maybe ten thirty percent often decide they want personalized ads when given the option that's based on some of the things that apple is one in the past. But yet most most people are not gonna a want to pay to get rid of ads.

Some will just to get rid of ads, but they won't have to pay to get rid of tracking. Um that that is the key here is that the pressure was on them to say, look, if you're making people pay to get rid of tracking, that is not freely given consent. I I disagree. I think I think saying like look, you can use this service with personalized ads or uh, you can use IT without ads by paying us is is a next step from you can pay for the service or or not use IT the the option was always that you could just not use facebook and instagram and I think that was ignored here.

IT felt like they were they were going at this as if they said, well, everybody has to use facebook in instagram and therefore, if that's the case, uh, they should have an option that doesn't track them uh, for whatever reason that that is what has prevailed and no matter is doing, I think be gradually ly doing this and saying, okay, fine, we'll do contextual ads. We won't make as much money off of IT do is there is there amount of money that that you think facebook and an instagram should be allowed to make? Like because I think a lot of people's attitude is you make too much, much IT .

companies generally want to make all the money possible for them to make.

So clearly, they're not going to be people in general, and companies are made up of people.

So yes, so so apple, you know matter google, they all want to make all the money. And so what a lot of people are saying as, oh, well, they are just going to shut down and is like, no, you can't just shut down.

You can do that maybe like, you know, there's been things where we've seen we're just going to shut down here and you guys tell us if you like that, but those are very, very small places with very few people where they do that because they know it's just not worth the hassle. The european union is worth the housel. We're talking about four hundred, four hundred, twenty four hundred thirty million people. That's a lot of folks. That's a lot of folks that makes sense for them to be there regardless of what these rules are.

Four hundred forty nine two million. How many? Four hundred forty two million.

So yes, that's a lot of people. So that, that is an enormous market that they can just say, well, we'd just not going to be here because they don't like your rules. They don't have to figure out how to play within the rules, not to your point time.

I don't know that I like this because you literally have a company saying is like we will give you this free thing. If you give us this thing that we want, we want your data. And if if you give us data, we will give you these services that you love.

And the government is saying, no, give IT to him for free or let them choose to, you know, to get IT. But you can't say that they only can give you data or only pay money to get these services. And that's like that doesn't seem very capitalistic, but that is wonder think you if you're looking at IT, well, we we're doing this because we want to protect our citizens.

We believe that these rules they were putting in place as Better for the people who live here. IT makes me wonder, will we get to a point to where the eu is saying is like no matter you can even collect this data, if people opt into IT, we are just going to exclude you from doing that. I don't know how that is.

You know, how do you tell people who are free? And I want to give you my information. I want you to have this information so that you can make my ad experience Better for me. Um I don't know that, that is going to happen, but IT seems like we're getting closer and closer to that because what the E U is literally saying is that we want you to give people the option to pay and not have ads at all. We also want you to give people the ability to get you know this for free with ads that don't target them directly um and if they want to opt and and get all the targeting, they can do that. No.

no, it's it's a great point. The E U. Market is big enough and valuable enough. Uh and there's enough of the company is like ducks go who don't target at all uh and still run ads and make money of them. It's not maximizing the profits.

There could be a situation at some point where facebook or instagram decide that this isn't worthwhile enough. Probably if facebook became irrelevant and with the path of yahoo, they might get to a point where they like, we just can't make enough money without targeting the ads. But even then, I doubt IT, uh, i'm with you that I do think this is interesting.

It's interesting to define IT this way. The E. U. Has said ah that if you are facebook because this only applies to companies of certain sizes and certain platforms and facebook, a meta keeper, yes, has qualified for that gay keeper er status.

You cannot provide your service for free without tracking you. You can run ads. You can run ads, but you you can't provide IT for free without tracking you.

You have to provide IT for free with non tracking ads. And that that is not something that any other region that I know of has done. And and yet, I think you're right.

I think it's like, well, those are the rules in you. You don't play in the u fine. And and facebook going to look at IT and say, no, this is a big enough market.

We'll play in there. I don't think they're going to cut them off from offering personalized ads at all. But that said, I don't think personalized dads are going to be nearly as important in this situation where people can choose not to have them get.

And the game that matter is going to play is that can we deprecate the experience enough that's going to force enough people to want to pay for IT so that we make our money back or at least where we're still profitable um as compared to everybody just goes to this, you know where we just going to be back in the. You well, they did say they will be based off a context. So hopefully you won't go back to where you were just getting crazy ads. Just who ever paid the most to have that ad in front of you? Hopefully, we're not going to go back to that.

In other eu news, block regulators notified apple that its geo blocking practices might be in violation of consumer protection rules. Apple doesn't let you use a credit card issued outside the country that you're registered in to pay for media services. That's to cut down on people using a VPN to get around geo restriction.

So I pretend i'm in the E. U. To sign up for an eu only service or the eu version of a service. So I can get you TV shows that are only available in europe if I have a credit card that to register in the us. Well, they want to let me sign up.

The E, U, saying, no, you gotta let them sign up if they appeared to be in the E, U, does not matter whether credit card is, if their payments good, you should take IT. Uh, IT also stops you from downloading apps not offered in your country. Uh, and that is a more interesting if they rule that you can't block people from accessing apps outside their country, I think that will be even more interesting.

We'll see how they rule in these apples. Already facing a potential fine from the E. U. For its antistius ring rules would stop developers from mentioning other ways to pay for their services outside of IOS as well.
