I'm Mariana Aspuru for The Wall Street Journal.

The Department of Homeland Security says that the man accused of carrying out a flamethrower attack in Boulder, Colorado yesterday was in the U.S. on an expired visa. The man suspected of the attack, which unfolded in the city's busy downtown area Sunday afternoon, was arrested at the scene and later charged with first-degree murder. The police said all eight victims of the attack are alive and remain in the hospital.

U.S. manufacturing activity sank a little deeper into contraction in May, hitting its lowest level since November. The Institute for Supply Management said today that its purchasing managers index fell to 48.5, below the 50 mark that divides growth and contraction.

excluding the pandemic period, new export orders also dipped and were at their lowest reading since 2009. The sink in U.S. manufacturing activity reflects worries over the impact of the Trump administration's whipsawing trade policy.

U.S. consumers cutting back on discretionary snack purchases is hurting Campbell's snacking business. On an earnings call today, Campbell's chief executive, Mick Bakehausen, said that the increased consumer focus on ingredients that can help stretch tight food budgets has boosted Campbell's meal and beverage division. Campbell's total sales rose 4.5 percent, with meals and beverages offsetting snack sales decline.

And the UK will spend £15 billion, or $20.18 billion, on its nuclear warhead program as part of a decade-long defence strategy. The country plans to build up to 12 nuclear-powered attack submarines, which will come in operation from the late 2030s. We'll have a lot more coverage of the day's news on the WSJ's What's News podcast. You can add it to your playlist on your smart speaker, or listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
