The Nasdaq gained 156 points, or 0.8%, turning positive for the year for the first time since February. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 214 points to close at 42,520, and the S&P 500 advanced 34 points. Markets have been bolstered by a strong earnings season, and some investors are feeling more confident that President Trump's trade policies won't tip the economy into a recession.

but it's unclear how negotiations with China, Japan, and the European Union are progressing. Investors are also waiting for progress on Trump's tax and spending megabill, which is facing uncertainty in the Senate. In the tech sector, chipmakers were among the biggest gainers today. NVIDIA advanced 2.9%, once again overtaking Microsoft as the largest U.S. company by market cap. And Broadcom rose 3.3%.

In other individual companies, shares of Dollar General jumped nearly 16% after the retailer raised its outlook. The company says tariffs have been good for business as price increases push consumers to discount chains. Robinhood shares surged 5.5% to an all-time high after the brokerage platform closed a deal to buy cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp. And shares of Pinterest gained 3.8% after JP Morgan analysts upgraded the social media stock to Overweight.
