U.S. job growth continued at a steady pace last month. The Labor Department said today that U.S. businesses added 147,000 jobs in June. This surpassed economist expectations, who had predicted a slowdown in hiring amid uncertainty over trade and fiscal policy.
Job gains were driven by health care and state and local governments. The unemployment rate, which is based on a separate survey of U.S. households, fell slightly from 4.2 percent to 4.1 percent. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to consider the constitutionality of state laws banning transgender women and girls from participating on female school sports teams.
It will hear two cases brought by transgender student-athletes and others against West Virginia and Idaho policies, blocking transgender girls, whose sex at birth was male, from competing in women's and girls' track teams. And thousands of airline passengers were grounded today due to a two-day walkout from French air traffic controllers. Flights crossing France's airspace faced delays and rerouting. This affected routes to Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Morocco.
The strike pertains to working conditions that triggered flight cancellations at the start of the summer vacation period. France's transport minister described the decision to strike during the busy holiday season as unacceptable. We'll have a lot more coverage of the day's news on the WSJ's What's News podcast.
