The legend of Atlantis, a technologically advanced island nation that supposedly sank beneath the ocean, originates from the writings of the Greek philosopher Plato. In his dialogues Timaeus and Critias, Plato describes Atlantis as a powerful and wealthy civilization that, at its peak, conquered parts of Europe and Africa before being destroyed by earthquakes and floods roughly 9,000 years before his time.
Plato's account depicts Atlantis as a utopian society with remarkable infrastructure, including concentric rings of canals and walls, grand palaces, and bustling harbors. The island was governed by ten kings who convened every five to six years at the Temple of Poseidon to discuss governance and justice. The catastrophic fall of Atlantis, believed to be a punishment from the gods for the Atlanteans' hubris, has sparked the imaginations of people for centuries, inspiring countless theories about its location and the fate of its lost civilization.
