Tonight on date line.
I miss her smile and her laughter. I missed everything about her. It's more difficult to speaking public about IT.
Now that just takes over .
everything IT does. I was absolutely panic.
It's been twenty years since he vanished. The beaming Young mom to be.
please, please let her come home .
to now a new turn. In the case of lacy Peterson and her husband's Scott petition.
In the matter of Scott Peterson, even Steve.
my queen, cool. We couldn't find anything wrong with this guy. I don't think there was a war on this body. I don't think you ever had a traffic ticket.
IT still affects me emotionally. Scott told me he was not married. We did have a romantic relationship. I was shaking, uncontrolled. Aby.
that changed everything you ever thought about.
I did.
Did scot Peter and kill us? why?
I don't believe that.
I mean, really.
who could done IT lad, you asked that .
question twenty years later. New developments in the hunting case of lacy Peterson, unless your hold. And this is deadline.
Here's Keith Morrison with lacy Peterson a new turn.
You may not recognize, but that's scot Peterson behind the mask back in court last summer.
calling the behavior st. Petition in the matter of Scott Peterson versus the people who stayed california.
This was a gift, in a way, an opportunity very few convicted murderer ever get here. In the very same course where he was tried and sentenced, Peterson was getting a chance to prove to a judge, but he deserved a new trial. It's been twenty years since we first heard about the mom to be with a radiant smile who disappeared on Christmas eve. Lady Peterson, the case that transfixed the whole world seems like I .
help you. I think a lot. He was playing god. I thought that in this morning.
let see if you're out there and can hear us and see us. We'd love you. And where we're searching.
we're looky .
IT hit something, something in the air. The right guys, that name, that smile, that mystery, impossible to put down.
Whatever has her? Please, please, please let her go.
Want to back, please, I don't have hour back.
And then there was him, the husband, the inscrutable ble scot Peterson.
I really don't care what people think of me. As long as the continues. Keep laces. Picture description tip line in the media.
Before our very eyes, he would move from a faithful husband to love his wife to an object of suspicion, an outrage, such a circus. The whole sad thing sometimes seem to be.
got what you come .
to talk to us, tells the truth.
Before all the noise, all the brethren verage, the hours of TV, the acres of tabloid, there was a story never completely told until the prosecutors set down with deadline. What do you think of scot Peterson? His personality?
He's a very unusual person. He's clearly very he. I think he's very smart. I think he thinks he's very smart.
The story the .
detectives saw first hand.
when somebody dies in a position, I came and they didn't do IT. Usually they will say, take blood, take a polygraph. I don't care. But Scott wouldn't do that. He would only go to a point, or most may be, Steve mcqueen call .
the story of what happened to her, to the other woman whose name was also thrust into a cultural moment. Amber fry, what does a cycle like that due to a person's life?
Why I say I meet from day one IT completely change my life.
And the story told by a frustrated x journalist, convinced that the cops, the prosecutors, the public got IT all wrong, did Scott Peter and killed his wife. I don't believe that.
I do not believe in.
And a video we found buried in the court archives.
the tell my problem .
is so you'd .
have .
no idea where scot Peterson .
talking to a detective just hours after sounding the alarm lacy was missing. But before we get there, we'll begin here with lacy Peterson's mother, Sharon rocha, surrounded, fortified, really by laces best friends, Stacy boyers Lorry elsewhere, th and renate tomline son. They seem to make you feel cheerful.
They do. They help a lot. I'm glad here here.
but it's tough to is is tough. Perhaps harder than ever to talk about IT, SHE said to talk about her long dead daughter case so captivated the country. There are people growing up who probably either don't remember or never knew about lacy Peterson. Tell me about lacy.
I moved to meet us, so in the third grade, and I knew nobody, and SHE was one of the first people I met, and there was no not meeting her.
You get the idea, big personality.
No, SHE made .
everybody laugh and welcome. And just with a smile, SHE could smile and you would know that that is the girl that you're going to be probably spending the rest that I talking to or law or listening, maybe not talking .
so much SHE is hard to .
get a word in as wise talk of smart the asian. A person who went for what he wanted, the way he did for Scott Peterson. How did they see meat, Scott.
at a cafe where Scott worked.
or at least saw him there. And just like that, gave a way her her phone number to pass out .
this cott SHE .
wasn't that and race's mother light? Scott liked them a lot.
Very charming, very polite.
perfect selection.
He had a dozen roses for lacy and then a dozen roses for me. So of course, I was impressed.
The course was like that, old fashioned in what seemed a good way.
He actually asked our permission to marry lacy, and we gave him our permission.
There was a big wedding in the summer of ninety seven. And by the turn of the millennium, Scott was a fertilizer salesmen in badest, lazy, a substitute teacher, his jo B2Come on the roa d a l ot, but they were happy. Did the three of yoga to know the two of them together. Much before I .
thought IT was a great guy. I thought I were a great. He was always happy. He was almost a joke of gush as he have a brother.
though lacy struggled to get pretend after nearly five years of marriage that .
came to the day after my baby shower that SHE threw for me, SHE took a pregNancy test and called everybody early, very early next morning.
Soon enough, the Peter since learned they were having a boy. They ready the nursery and decided to name him corner. Lacy was nearly eight months pregnant by Christmas, the last Christmas before a little corner was due. You're was supposed to have a Christmas dinner.
right? Yes, I was. He was having Christmas day, and I was at Christmas eve dinner. That was when he called, closed to six fifteen, he called, and as a place he was with me and I said, no, she's not hear. She's missing.
And that was the beginning Christmas, a two thousand two lacy Peterson, with her bright smile, was nowhere to be found.
When we come back, the missing mom to be is about to become national news. There's a five hundred .
thousand dollars ward. I thought somebody kids.
after I was absolutely panic .
the first clues, her dog dragged, its least her neighbors robed, her husband asking for help.
Did he seem credit or worried a little bit?
What was IT about this woman, this man, this case that so quickly gripped the nation was IT. Her smile was IT. Because that happened Christmas eve, subject for some P.
H. D. Theses that, but at the beginning I was like a thousand other such cases, a stomach flipping phone call she's missing.
I had a child missing him for ten minutes. And the sense of, oh my god, something may have happened here is so powerful. IT just takes .
over everything IT does. IT does, does, and absolutely does.
Lacey Peterson's mother, Sharon, remembers telling her son at law Scott, check with the neighbors, call lacy's friends and he did, you will.
Yeah, we are call.
He asked me, i'd seen that day. Have you seen, see IT all today? I said, no, I haven't. She's she's missing.
And did he seem rather are worried.
a little bit worried .
enough to ask for their help so that you all over to his, yeah, to their place? Sharon roaches, long time boyfriend ron grand sky called the cops.
Even my daughter morning golfing .
on a cold Christmas eve. Odd, but okay. Meanwhile, Sharon followed up on something. Scott told her that he came home to find the dog out in the yard wearing a leach. I went regular to the park because of that leach on the dog, and we had .
walked together in the park before. I was absolutely panic. I was running around. I was looking in trash counts. I was screaming her name.
no sign of her anywhere. Like his friends spent the early hours of Christmas morning making missing posters.
the next morning I walked in was a Christmas day. We had flyers and tape and everything. Family and volunteers is often one another way to get her picture out there day.
And I did sleep for days. OK, yeah.
that's pretty soon.
The whole town of pedestal seem to be looking for .
lady Peterson. Anyone out there help bring her home, bring her home life.
Of course, the police were searching to full out. How long did the search go on? And.
well, all night. And then all the next day.
Alberti, the first detective in the case, watched a searchers score at the area. They were everywhere here.
right there, just, oh, they did a grad search, meaning they have been an eye contact, and walked this whole area.
Rotini and his partner, john bigger, had a feeling from the start. Lacy Peterson missing wasn't going to end well because he .
didn't leader in that risk lifestyle. SHE hanging around at the bars, and he was an out two timing ham, or doing anything like that. I mean, he was a girl that was just esthetic from everything that I learned about her of being a mother.
So SHE wasn't someone who would just walk away. And yet, in the yanks, iee hope an idea formed in the minds of those who love lacy, that somehow this might turn out. All right.
we know we're going to find lasting. We know we're going to bring her home alive and safe.
We, we're going to find her. Like I thought, somebody kidnap her. That's what I thought just for the baby.
Something here's Lorry renan Stacy, along with another friend in january two thousand three.
there's hundred thousand dollars ward for her, you know, the baby safe return. Just take that, you know, take the money and give us lady back.
So in those first days, an exhausted Sharon rocha correct husband, lacy's father Dennis, besides, went on T, V, and pleaded with a kidnapper.
And we just like to send a message out there that whoever has her, please, please, please let her go .
bring .
her back with so much early on.
there were clues, the cops and covered the night kidnap being seen, plausible. Remember the couple's dog with the leica tach Scott founded in the backyard. A neighbor said he saw the Peterson's dog wandering the street earlier that day.
So maybe lacy was kidnapped while walking the dog. And just about the time lacy disappeared, there was a burglary right across the street. So did SHE witnessed crime. Did burglars take her? The police wanted to know a reward for information for the identity of the .
the persons responsible .
for burberry. Then two men were caught. Didn't take long time soon enough.
One of them showed up in a TV at a view. I went, picked up to safe and to my house. And I saw that I had to do with IT.
I'm going to do with that. And police agreed, no connection to let see. So they kept digging.
We're also looking at in researching up all the sex registers and the parole lease people with histories of violent crime, abductions, kidnapping, the sexual assault and something that we had some. We were clearing those guys, we were interviewing them and we were verifying their alibis.
What the police were not saying was that homicide detectives had other suspicions. Of course, they talked to lacey's husband, sky.
We're certainly going to look at Scott first. He's the closest to access. And that's where you start when you're working a case like .
course that was behind the scenes in front of the camera, the official police statements were more circumspect. Let's focus on the fact that we would still like to find lily alive, but we have to understand what the other possibilities are. The other possibilities are that SHE could be, uh you know a victim of file play. Those closest to lacy, who had first were having trouble grappling with the whole idea of file play, certainly couldn't for them. That Scott t had anything to do with lacy disappearance back then, early two thousand and three, even Sharon rocha told us impossible people who .
know Scott and lacy have no doubt whatsoever that he has nothing to do with her disappearance.
It's a powerful thing, true belief. But when IT comes crashing down, my, my, my .
coming up, Scott Peters and down at the station, a rare look at his .
interrogation .
this .
morning decision.
Was there something fish about his story?
He didn't even know what he was fishing for. He didn't know what baby .
was used when deadline continues.
Didn't take long for the lacy Peterson story to go wide. That face was smiling out of magazines and television screens nationwide. The more we need, we get, the more he's out of summer friends and family, desperate to get the story out.
Talk to anyone, everyone, but they notice one person seem to stay in the background. Scott grieving in private. His parents told us back in two .
thousand three, he just would .
not be a good spokesman.
But there was one camera Scott couldn't shy away from at the police station. Here's got with detector kini just hours after he reported lately missing in this rarely seen video. You can watch Scott here. His words, does he seem like a worried.
frantic husband? You'll say.
嗯, OK. No time, get up. Probably let you got up and went in the breakfast.
Was he okay? Was talking? He was any hesitation?
No, he agreed he was okay with that.
Didn't ask for turning to anything like that.
No, then returning .
and then he is going to the store by for Christmas morning breakfast tomorrow. And that was in via involved product. So that was just pressing breakfast SHE make generate Cooper ti as brookenham .
there he was struck by how impassive scope was, even as he revealed he didn't go golfing.
What did you review your go fish? Now that was the morning decision that was in, like all the confusion seem to called the king of the club.
He said he drove to his warehouse office a few miles away.
Anyone would you shop? What would you do there? By symboled, by modest?
More test were working tool. Yes, I just got that, so I sembled IT check me. Send money well.
Then, said scot, he drove to the berkeley marino, about ninety miles away, party ce car, and put his boat in the water.
When you got your work and take off.
did you go very far? Well, mean, I got miles north about the like low island kind of deal there. Island had a bunch of trash on that.
I remember the excited to no landing and looked like some broken peers around. And I just seem to be a decent, shallow area. 底 筹 宝贝。 A lot of the reason went was just the days .
that sound plausible enough, except to detected broker I, he drew a short straw and he got a Fisherman.
The talk to me and the and the officers they worth Fisherman to his fishing pole is like when you use in a stream and his Lewis or jigs that you would use in the delt, he didn't even know what you was fishing for. He didn't know what baby was using. He didn't have any a gear that was really meant to be fishing in the bay.
okay. I also wondered why had sort bought a fishing license days before. We didn't know he was gonna sh that day.
There's a receipt dated december twenty that's when he bought his fishing license.
But then he said he was the last man decision.
He said he was just that day the .
last man decisions .
so quite doesn't the detective was.
to say the least sceptical of Scott fishing story.
Why would you go ninety mile if all you're doing is you want to try out your new boat, right? And you live in modesto. I could tell you twenty places within twenty five miles here you could put that boat in the water. And that tried out.
But Scott said he had proof a parking receipt from liberia.
Yeah, here. Here's my receipt and just approve. I was there, you know. So, I mean, I fished at bertley marino a lots of times and I probably got four, five of mom, my dashboard right now, but I don't know what made him decide OK. I'm done fish and i'll take IT off my dash, but I put IT in the park in case I need IT for later. I don't know, but that's just he was ready prepared.
Scott said. The fish weren't biting that Christmas eve afternoon, so he headed back to modesto and got home around four thirty, where he found the dog with the leica attached an unlocked back door. But no lazy gration .
eat them from bridge out. Yeah but on the court I like the word but milk.
He was calm as he spoke to be kini calm. Matter of fact, helpful.
Were you call me for late year course.
but you went home? no.
Then you called over.
He answers your questions.
but he doesn't do any more than that, right?
That fair to say he has an answer and he doesn't elaborate, doesn't get emotional.
which the investigators thought at the time wasn't necessarily a good thing.
He told me, oh, that's concerning. I get home in the cars there and the dogs run around alleged, you know, the doors unlocked and her purses here and and that's that's really concerning me but let me take all my clothes off and wash him and let me know, eat some pizza, take a shower before I even try to figure out what's going on here. That's concerning. That was concerning to me.
And then the detective asked the question that soon everyone would be asking.
So you have .
no idea where.
Most people have in that situation. They're going to have a lot of questions for you. Are you guys doing this? I've heard of this.
Why won't do this? Or we ve got that from sharing. We got that from run. We ve got that from lacie friends. Everybody had an interest in trying .
to get us to go fashion everybody that but Scott know why they wonder, would that be?
Coming up .
beautiful. I just the message.
your home. When I listened to that, I thought that he was leaving this recording for us .
to hear Scott and scrutiny.
I was afraid to say out loud, had he been involved with her disappearance.

A week after lazy Peters and disappear, they had a video.
everyone coming together crying just helps.
helps you feel .
like you're doing .
something. Candles and prayers and tears. And though much of modesta was here in body, your spirit, not a single person understood, not yet, not for a while, why this gathering would become a defining moment, especially perhaps god Peterson, because, though he looked as if he might have shed a tear or two, he seemed to be avoiding places, family and friends. What about the visual?
No, he was on the day he was on the phone.
Jhn wouldn't know for a long time the truth about Scott phone called that night, but IT was that night after the visual that privately Sharon first allowed her mind to go to that very dark place.
I remember I was new year's eve. Yeah, when I started going back and forth, but just to myself, I wouldn't say IT out law, I was already to say that out loud. But I started just kind of thinking, had he been involved with her disappearance.
sharing was a frantic messing. SHE looked at him, and he just seemed so detached somehow.
Never once did he say, oh my god, where is lacy? Where can he be? I hope she's okay. I hope you she's not harm. Never in that panic.
Even as you're talk about that, you can see a little bit of IT left. Yes, he did not seem to have that.
He did not have IT. And I actually made out a list of, did he and or didn't he? I had a list, and there was a lot more on the did and didn't. And that's what really scared me.
IT scared her. You didn't want to believe IT didn't want to go there. So SHE didn't put that thought out of her mind. But the detectives were trained to go there. They turned over, everything is, Scott said, and did and didn't do, and wonder why there was a sickness, somehow, a fake feeling from the very beginning. Like the voice sale you left, they see, well, he drawed home in .
the burking marina, a message home.
When I listened to that, I thought, now this doesn't sound right. But married five years, she's pregnant. And he's talking to ward like .
they are on their third date.
The tone to IT that he was leaving this recording for us to hear so that he would appear to us as a devoted husband and not somebody that was involved in foul play course.
You could also be that he was just a romantic guy.
We couldn't rule out out at all.
And there was this under the circumstances, the very day lazy disappeared. Why was he? Almost obsessively festivities? When they search, they pick up truck.
He was worried about the wrong things. I'm certainly truck, and I opened the door and IT bangs into the landrover was right up there. He was out.
He has a glove. I'll hold this or i'll move my truck. But, you know, actually, I wrote in my report because i'm like.
that's weird. These weren't hard facts of evidence, of course, just a rising damp of suspicion. Things like, when is got get a boat?
The detectives said that he said that he had taken his boat out. And I said, what about Scott doesn't .
have a .
boat until turn he did.
Scot told kini that lady knew about the boat. How could I be that Sharon had no idea. The scot had recently bought a used fourteen foot game. Fisher.
the light didn't just go on my head and say, oh, he killed her. No, he didn't. I treated him like a husband and miss the husband of a missing person. But I had suspicions. I asked me to take me to the boat, show me the boat.
very like that first night, the detective and Scott went to Scott's warehouse where he worked and kept his boat.
You came here that night, night. yeah.
What did he tell you when you came here? You want to look inside your your flash he said.
there's no electricity.
no lights, which was a lie. So I just said.
open the door and output my headlights in there to .
the detectives. IT all smell bad. So they did the things detectives do.
They got a wire tap on Scotts phone, hit a GPS under his car, and they watched him consistently. Sometimes they are noticed. He watched them too.
I was surveilLance. I'm in an unmarked car. I'm part three blocks away in a high school, parking a lot full of cars.
And i'm watching this place with parotitis and all the sun. I look at my side of mire and Scott. So I got out the car. He he says IT was .
just odd. And yet he seemed such a boy scout. He had no secret criminal past, no history of being abusive.
problem.
So they stood in their suspicion.
aware they really had nothing on him. We couldn't find anything wrong with this guy.
I don't think there was a war on this body. I don't think he ever had a traffic ticket. I mean, he really was. The guy want to marry your sister. We were waiting for that one thing that showed that he wasn't this perfect .
guy in one remarkable moment. They get that and more because of her.
Coming up.
he was single and looking for the one.
Enter Amber.
he was going .
really good.
Did you start to think about, wait them. And I could actually make a life with this man.
You know, I did.
When deadline continues.
October two thousand, two months before lacy Peters and disappeared, and one hundred miles away in frisoni, california, something happened that would make all the difference. In the case, a Young woman named Amber. I got a phone go from a friend about the guy I was .
doing really well in getting my crave started in our theri and single mother, and was told about this great guy that that my friend want me to meet.
He sounded and perfect.
SHE had said he had a git into humor, good looking, had A A career. He was single and looking for the one like.
so mate, you serious about this? Yeah, his name, Scott Peterson IT was late november when they matted person and IT was electric. I mean.
we just had a really great first state.
like really good. Sometimes you mean somebody is very easy to talk to them, feel between the two like that. Yeah, he wood her fast with strawberry and champagne. IT was early bright, citing absolutely. He was eager to bond with ember's little girl.
and he was really sweet with her. He was excited. We had planned a picnic and a little hike. SHE held both of her hands as we walked and was .
comfortable with them.
Very sweet at the time was.
And it's not always you find a man who is comfortable with the idea that you have a child or children.
right?
He bought them both gifts. He brought groceries to their house. He made dinner. He was considered Carrying even the .
voice mail. 法院, 我的天。 Here are you doing?
Um I was .
going really good. I was really excited. He was always complimenting, you know, like you leave the best messages and you looking forward to seeing .
you also perfect. My god. Never mentioned, of course, was that he was married.
His wife was lacy, and he and lacy were ready a nursery for their first born, who was on his way. No, Amber knew nothing of that yet. Something wasn't sitting right with her. He thought, why, when he called her, was there so often the sound of running water in the background, as if he was masking the sound of the conversation?
If was just died, like, why are you talking to me in the shower? And he kind of a blue off, like IT wasn't a big deal.
But then early december.
he had called me one day saying he really need talk to me. And I could hear in his voice he was worried, either concerned or something was going on.
Scott was contract, said he had a confession to make .
he apologize because he had wasn't honest with me that I had asked if he'd ever been married and and that, in fact, he had lost his wife and this would be the first holidays without her.
That's expression he used.
I lost my wife, yes. And he was crying and just, you know, like, very emotional.
He was a tender moments at member, and SHE felt compassion for him. I thought .
maybe SHE, you know, cancer or in an accident or, I mean, because obvious his words were, obviously I was something recent or more recent. Did you ask? I didn't ask. I didn't want na cry because he was so emotional with .
that secret of his chest. Scott gave her a new cell phone number where he could reach him when he took a long planned trip to europe over Christmas. That is.
if you still want to talk to me after, you know.
after I ve told you this.
right? And so it's like, yes, of course.
did you start to think about, wait them and I could actually make a life with this man?
You know, I did.
And yet, even here, december four, tenth, as they got ready for a Christmas party with amer friend, the little beast of doubt was warming its way. And remind.
I was starting to fill that women's intuition. Samm just wasn't right, really. yes.
Well, he was in europe. He told her he should write to him at a post office box in model. He told her he lived in secret to.
So why modesto? Why these odd question he couldn't answer? SHE had a cup for, and he called him. Could he check up on Scott Peterson from secret to a few days later? Her friend called back.
He said that he found an article and that he was going to print IT and bring IT to me.
I said, okay, that was december twenty nine. Scott had left for euro two days earlier or so, he said. And then amer read the article. I was in .
disbelief of what i'm reading because I IT sounds like him and fertilized our salesmen. modest. I don't think there was a full picture of him, but there was, uh, his truck was in this article.
So were these words pregnant and missing?
I need this confirmed. I don't want to believe what. I just can .
turn your world upside down.
Oh, absolutely.
And that's when I called the modest to police.
I reach a dispatcher and I said, I ve been dating this person um i'm just want to know if this is the same person and he gives OK OK like, okay IT is or okay what he gave his birth th data gave us full name and and then h. SHE says is OK yes .
Ambers got Peterson and the Scott Peterson with the missing wife were one in the .
same and I just remember crying like, I don't know for how long I was shaking like the dream and just I was in shock.
Amburgh, who thought maybe shit met the one, was in the middle of something .
terrible .
coming up.
We want to start recording calls.
hushed conversations, hidden recordings.
Amber goes undercover.
I was shaking, uncontrollable, so just nervous and scared.
In all fairness to the modesto police department, scrambling to managed the flood of tips about lazy Peterson, ember's phone call was a barely distance able ripple. Did they call you back right away? no. So the next day he called again and looking over the dispatch shoulder at just the right moment was detective rotini.
I just happened to be, stand in mind one of them and bell was typing and I could see the name Amber fry and and she's in Scott Peter .
since my boyfriend so I said.
bev, you talk in her yeah I said.
can let me talk to her and before along, the two detectives were in fresh, now listening person to Amber story of Scott emas courts. IT was almost .
like a script writer was writing this very talented with the romance he was.
I basically just told him our whole relationship that we had been having and what our conversation was currently at the moment.
and that he was over in europe somewhere.
right? You know, I think they too were just a little like in disbelief, shake in their head. No, he's definitely a modesta.
Scott had been lying the whole time, elaborate. He'd even called deer from a payphone at the airport to say goodbye when he's supposedly left for europe. So you d see the color I D but if Amber hadn't known where scot really was, SHE surely knew a lot.
And he had a mental recall that was punctuated with wine corks and all sorts of memory building that she'd saved from their romance.
So then the detectives, could you help them in their investigation?
But we want to start recording calls.
Amber agreed. So they went right out and bought a portable recorder. And what do you know?
Soon as I plugged in her little recorder and i'm shown and pushed the red button, the black button.
the phone rings.
He called a boy.
And their expression, they were just like what I can call on you right now.
I was shaking uncontrollably. My fingers were like, just sweat pass. And I was fully, because I was so just nervous and scared.
And so I began for the next eight days. Scot Peterson pretended he was traveling in europe. Amber fy, pretending he was still his girlfriend.
The cops, they get looking, bringing set dogs to berkeley, diverse to the bay laces. Friends held that visual pray. All the while, Amber secretly recorded her conversations with Scott. Inwardly trembling.
I was shaking and trying to catch my breath and calm down. There is just too much nerves there, and I would pay back and forth one .
of those calls, of course, he didn't know that at the time is going to be notorious near zip. That was the big one.
Yeah.
ever. I. At my new hours.
In fact, the crowd was huge, just wasn't apparent. IT was in modesto e, and they weren't celebrating. The scot called Amber from the visual for lacy, the one where he made himself scarce while sharing. And raciest friends pleaded for help. And Scott called amer inventing fine details of his trip, like jogging on the couple stones of europe.
I think I should just run on the street.
He worked out the time difference for his phone calls. And he kept on wooing her, unaware of who was listening.
我。 出去玩。 But for you are and making here, I always call you to tell you special and it's.
Not, oh, very interesting. But what are you hoping for from those recorded conversations that you didn't get?
Well, of course, ideally, I was hoping that he would say, no, I murder my wife. I dumped in the bay and I run off to europe. But that wasn't gna happen.
So detectives went right at him. They asked god to come down to the police department again. And without telling him where they got IT, they showed him a facts of a photo of himself with Amber fry at the Christmas party.
And of course, he lies when he's confronted.
prosecute git sager.
He sees the picture of himself with the Amber and he is, that's not me.
Was IT curly him?
IT was, if got suspected.
the detectives that somehow found out about Amber, he didn't let on and he kept calling her and he kept recording, but he started testing her with questions.
po.
And I was like, a what what mean there was another time he had asked, um if I had seen the article on the the monarch butterflies that are in pismo and I said, no I gathered right away he was asking because these were in fact something that was in the paper possibly if I was looking at the news to .
find out in other words, if he knew about lacy and then a january six thirteen days after lacy disappeared Scott told .
number himself 愿 被 挖掘 的 女 超级 声音。 I have not been treated like. I have to write you that i've been traveling.
我知道 要 你 爱情 爱人 的 东西。 这是 pear 的 Christine 哼。 The past two weeks have been a modesta with her family. Life searching for her.
Okay.
just disappeared and no one knows.
Godd had no idea, of course, that Amber happened to be in the police station when he offered that big admission or that Amber is responding. Question was a huge deal to both her and the cops.
You came to me and december and told me that you lost your wife. What was that about?
And think of the live.
What SHE is where .
she's .
a live where and you came and told .
me this a at night .
about her missing and this tragedy and that and that that this will be the first holidays without .
her never said number. I, I, I got just want to find with you. You know that I I never said a tragedy.
Oh yes, you said you've lost your White.
no. But obviously .
without me saying much.
I, I like my wife.
Yes, did I did.
And yes.
how did you lose her then before he was lost spring? Now there are .
different kinds of number.
different kinds of laws. Now, what does that mean?
Coming up, we did have a romantic relationship .
revealing the truth to the world. Amer fries firestorm, almost like .
exploding your own bombs.
I had a panic attack. I could not breathe .
when deadline continues.
IT was a world of pain that january of two thousand three, Sharon rocha was still dripping onto a slippy remnant of hope that her lacy was still alive, was barely hanging on the day soon after that new year's visual. When Scott walked into the house .
and I asked him, how are you doing and he said, you know, i'm doing okay and i'll just remember, IT was almost like I was just pulling back from him taking, you're doing okay. What do you mean you're doing okay?
Sharon definitely wasn't doing OK while the cops moving forward incrementally needed more. Police looking for lacy Peterson in modesto, california, want to verify her husband's alibi. Modesto pd.
Put out a bullet in, has anyone seen this truck, this boat? On Christmas eve, they expanded their ground search to the foothills, the reservoir, even mind share. And by my january, police decided they needed to tell Sharon about scots of fair.
We've got some information we got ta let you know about on this. And the best thing we can do is just give the to you.
They showed up the photo and Amber rise mas party, the one Scott said wasn't him.
I literally thought I was going to throw out. I stood up for fast because I want to get out there. I want to get away from that. I didn't want to hear whatever, saying.
what mother .
would I just remember? My stomach just turning, and I just saying.
just crime. He didn't .
have to kill her. That changed .
everything you'd ever thought about.
I did.
detective buler had told share on about Amber because rumors were in the air. The media was snifty about and getting close.
Get to the office. The reporter was right there, a boy, yeah.
January twenty forth. Local news showed up at Amber's workplace national tabloid. We're not far behind I to talk to them.
No, I refused. Talked anybody trapped .
in her office SHE called detected buler. That's when the pedestal pd decided that if Amber s story was going to break anyway, they'd break IT on their terms.
We believe at the time, I was probably best to get her up there, almost like exploding your own bomb.
Buler sent two colleagues to feature with a statement all prepared.
They were speeding back in the and skating there and you know, having this statement right now, trying to read a few times. So it's not too foreign.
As they drove to modest to headquarters, gathered the media big news economy. And we are .
waiting for modest to police to come out any moment and speak on developments in the li Peterson investigation.
This is the moment when the Amber five burst like a deer in headlights on to the public stage.
Okay, first of all, I met Scott Peterson november twenty years, two thousand. two. I was in reduced to him.
I was told he was unmarried. Scott told me he was not married. We did have a romantic relationship.
I, I had a panic attack. I didn't breathe. I literally cannot catch my breath. When I discovered he was involved in the disciplines of the lac Peters and disapearance of case, I immediately contacted the modest of police department.
SHE spoke for just over a minute.
I am very sorry for this. His family. And the the pain that this is cost then. And I pray for her to return as well.
And now everyone do. And Scott new, everyone do. So did he stop calling Amber fy? No, listen to this.
I am going to say our brave are, i'm really glad that you, he did that he was .
in a matter of time, but IT really wasn't a matter of choice. That was that they were staked out at my work.
All thing I know, private brain, that just shows what amazing character .
has Scott call to. Congratulated her, just thanked her. Very strange. The police were thanking Amber two now they had new clues, like the day Scott told amer he lost his wife. IT was the very same day he bought the boat. Coincidence now thought the police had to be evidence of premeditation. The very existence of Amber fy changed everything and revealed that many little bests of doubt had been turning about in the minds of even Scott's die hard supporters .
after Amber came forward. That's when they started to open up about the things that they had been kind of hiding in holding back.
People remembered things like how Scott once told someone he was hoping for infertility, that he seemed uncomfortable holding babies, that he didn't want to touch laces, pregnant stomach, that he complained he was having a midlife crisis at eight thirty, when people thought about his story, that they, he walked your dog. They remember cheap, be too tired to do that, and they remember red to the peculiar way he acted the night lacy disappeared.
We are sending in the driveway. I asked if he had called his parents. He said, no, I was trying to have a conversation with him and continued to just turn away from me. He would never look at the eye. I had to keep following him around and trying to have visual contact .
with him because Scott Peterson had something to hide.
Coming up.
I had a remain and relationship that was inappropriate.
scot Peters, and goes public, but in private, strange behavior.
He said, I think, wish you get the house up on the market.
Suspicious ous clues that looked .
like five of these little coffee can ankers had been.
Christmas. I want to only focus is to find lacy and to bring her home to us. I love my daughter so much. I miss her every minute of every day.
On the same day that Amber fy told the world about her relationship was gott Peterson.
Scott told me he was not married.
Lacy's mothers stood before the cameras too. IT was exactly a month since lacy disappeared.
I miss sharing our thoughts and our lives together. I miss your smile and her laughter and our sense of humor. And I miss everything .
about her cheron, who kept trying to keep hope alive, found IT slipping away.
Someone has taken all of this a way for me, and everyone else loves her.
Any thoughts that Scott had nothing to do with IT gone to, even though sherie would not mention him by name.
I know that someone knows where acy is, and i'm pleading with you. Please, please let her come home to us.
Unbeknownst to them, Scott, was that he about going public too, and he disgusted with wealth? Amber.
I am going to speak to the press every week there. In the time.
in week you have a date um well .
and debate on when IT should be OK done because tuesday is state of the address OK so that will take up a lot and I max you got IT all right a sudden world of interviews .
a few days after his affair with Amber was revealed scot talked about IT on nbc by station obviously yes.
I had a remain relationship that was inappropriate.
unfair to a lot of people in an appearance on C B S S K O, V R. It's got claimed lazy.
I told lazy about the relationship. Um SHE knew about IT as an important between us.
They went on A B, C to assure the whole country he was innocent.
Did you build your wife? No, no. I just thought, and I actually nothing to do with her disappearance.
And now many of the people who knew Scott and love Scott no longer believed the word he said. For the police who had never believed him. Amber fry was just one part of an intercut, an entirely circumstantial case against sky. IT relied on the smallest of details like this, outtake, from his interview with K O V R.
and glad that I OK.
but seems strange, his phones ringing and he's not stopping the interview to go in an answer. IT. Now, this could be the call of springing lacy back to him. IT could be the ransom call. IT could be us call in him and saying, hey, we've got some good news for you that we found he went over there and just shut the phone off and .
resume the interview without you check at all.
One more strand strands .
of evidence to try to weave into a rope with which the hang Scott, another strand, Scott, sudden desire to sell his and laces home. Just weeks after he went missing.
He said, I think we should get the house up on the market and my mom said, this isn't the time to be discussing this .
scope but he did sell laces car, another strand. And then there was the cement dust that Scott's warehouse.
A lot of people use concrete anchors for small little boats, and IT looked like five of these little coffee can. Anchors had been made there on that trailer.
but only this one anchor was found.
It's clear there was more than one. Now where are those?
Nobody knows what the other four used to wait down. Lacie body and those scots said going fishing was a last minute decision. There were sea charts and maps of the berkeley marina a on his computer from early december, and Scott police. He spent time at his warehouse office on the day that he disappeared, and they couldn't help but notice how is included. The place .
was is a very isolated back. You're and especially on a Christmas.
you want to get away with something and suppose you could do IT yeah, like move a body into a boat out the detective.
we have a window here in the front and noted the spring is a door.
So police gathered the trends, span the rope. And everything that happened happened with a lot of people watching. Where is got Peterson stand in all of this.
He's not been eliminated from the investigation. Or has he been identified as a suspect? Not identified as a suspect, not officially yet. Clearly the only person of interest for the cops and the media.
Evidence, evidence.
And cheron kept grappling with the depressing truth that he just didn't want to bly.
I felt that I should have felt. Her, leave this earth. I right into this world, I should have felt when he left so that I had known whether he was going on. So that time I still had hoped IT, that SHE was coming home. A strange .
and powerful thing that is not IT is you give birth to a person, you bring them up and you feed them and you care for them.
And and we were very, very, very close. yes.
And Scott, he soon faded from public view, doesn't stay much in modesto o and Amber finally told him to stop calling her.
And really everything that has happened last fifty plus days from the south and and the family and you and everything that's going in right now, I think it'd be best if you and I didn't talk anymore until their resolution in this.
后面 还有 可以 的, 可以。
And everyone just. Waited until the sea finally revealed what everybody had been waiting for.
Coming up.
I felt something that day I just knew.
a devastating discovery and a ride into danger.
This was completely off the charts. Nobody e's ever reacted this way.

April thirteen, two thousand and three IT was a cool day in northern california. A Sharon rocha was hiding from the world.
IT was one of those days. I just buried myself in the cast with a blanket over my head.
and he had so locked herself away that day that friends had become to her house to tell her there was news .
they're knocking on my back door, on the slider .
in the backyard. IT had a nearly four months since lacy disappear that somehow sharing felt more bad. News was coming early that morning when the tides were low.
The body of a baby had been found on the shoreline north of berkeley, y. The next day, another body, a tour sold, badly decomposed, was found nearby. The ross accounting .
corner has arrived at the scene and is now recovered the remains of the victim, with this time letting people know that we believe the gender of the victim is female.
But even without positive identification, everyone knew, even sharing, who, despite everything, kept trying to hold on to a read of hope that you'd wake from a nightmare from Scott.
There was not a heap the fact that he didn't click up the phone and called anybody to find out if that was his wife and his baby. Left no doubt my mind.
her daughter was dead. Her grandson would never be born. Detective john buler had known that for a while, and now he was nearly ready to arrest Scott. Just not that we were .
going to wait to serve the warrant until after the DNA results were to confirm the bodies were lacy encounter .
by that April, scot Peterson was living in Sandy ago near his parents. So take, take tick. Detectives waited for lab results. Police kept the A, Y. And Scott.
They had the surveilLance going on him for quite some time before that.
Then April eighth, two thousand and three, seven, eight, the lab results were still pending when scot Peterson decided to play cat and mouse, with whom ever was after him.
He's a pretty good driver, at least he was. He knew we were behind them.
Scott started driving erratically, verified we were trying .
to keep this rolling surveilLance on. And we had a helicopter for part of the time.
He stopped and heat .
cross over three lanes of traffic, taking an exit round. And of course, we couldn't do that.
We've been up missing them, driving invasively at times giving one cop the finger. How long did they lead you on this marriage?
OK, this was IT seemed like that might have been a couple hours or so, maybe longer.
Scott, with police trAiling, traveled one hundred sixty miles that morning until law enforcement decided IT was just too dangerous. We have to arrest them.
They put the light side. He pulled off into the entrance to tory pine skulls, of course, and they made contact with them as we pulled up, came out of the car with the handcuff. Sam, no hysterics, no profit. Typically know Scott, in all he is controlled on the.
or what they found in the car with scot was fascinating. Camping gear, four cell phones, his sister's credit card, his brothers drivers license and cash, almost fifteen .
thousand dollars.
They also look different, way different by intent. Clearly, when you arrested him, did they express anything that would suggest he understood that was IT even going away.
I went to search his car. He said, john, can you tell me if those bodies were my wife and son? And I just told him my Scott already know.
He answered that as they drove north of modesto with their prisoner in the back seat, buner got confirmation that the DNA was in. The bodies were corner and lacy, they told Scott. Now he's wearing .
sunglasses at time to look, and I, he doesn't make hardly any reaction whatsoever later.
when they stopped at a road side burger place to get something to eat, given the news he just received you to assume Scott wouldn't have much of an appetite, he was wrong.
And he goes, i'll have a double, double with cheese, a small fried of an illness shake, like we are coming back, confusion.
cold, that's what do. Lar.
i've run into people that have had grief before many, many times. And this was completely off the charts. Nobody y's ever reacted this way in my presence when I came to something like that.
When they got back to modesto, Scott was booked into jail. IT seemed like the end of the road for Scott Peterson, but the circus wasn't leaving. IT was just moving up the road a bit.
Coming up.
he can be very smooth, but there's something underneath the surface.
Prosecutors speak out in an in depth interview.
He wanted a different life.
Twenty years later, they share their story.

As the case against Scott Peters and slowly made its way from a rest to trial, what really happened to lacy Peterson became a kind of televised courtroom theater.
The events is asking that the jury be secured red from to five months.
The jury is going .
to hear a lot of theories, and they simply must latch onto the .
one that is most reasonable.
juries who are death qualified or more likely to vote for convention. The cast included legal celebrities like defensive tourney mark jara goes whose signed on to defense sort .

Look forward .

corner and women's advocate.
Thank you for coming today. I'm attorney Gloria orrid. To my right.
this Amber fry, Gloria orrid acted the protective wall around the story's wild card. Amber fri.
Amber was not gonna be doing interviews during the course of the case, even though so many people wanted interview.
Wasn't you offered a means amount?
There were many offers to Amber if he would only have an interview, but he needed to protect her testimony. The actual case .
that all together missing in the legal cafe oni with the prosecutors burger flasher dave herri this all these years later, was their first I nomi in depth television interview about the Peterson case during the trial, they often had to bite their tones.
Your radio would go off in the morning, the radio alarm and the little news blurb that you would hear on the pop radio station, whatever would would reference the case, they could say whatever they wanted, right? And IT wasn't always necessarily .
true .
in court. Garages want to change a venue, though just ninety miles or so from a dust. Not know about the Peterson case.
how is feeling about the move?
He just wants a trial to take place so that people will be able to see what really took place.
Scots mom assure reporters her son was innocent, but he couldn't be very happy when everyone deep camp to the new courthouse and saw this billboard, a local radio station bought right across the street. Man or monster, what do you think when you saw that?
Well, that was when we were about to start .
jury selection, jury section.
So I think we were worried we were going to have another change of any.
But here it's stayed, june first, two thousand four, a year and a half after lacy Peters invasions, ed, her husband Scott went on trial for her murder. And right off the bat, the prosecution told the jury about Scott and Amber. He winced as they show these photos of the two of them from the night of the party, the same photos that help him get caught. And then they showed the jury this picture of lacy. Same night, different party SHE went alone.
The reason for the murder was he didn't want to be married anymore and he didn't want to have a child. He wanted a different life. And Amber was just a symptom of that. He didn't want what he had.
want to be at what he had. He did another mazing encounter where responsibility, E. S. And he didn't want that.
He doesn't care about anyone but himself. He can be very smooth. But there's something underneath the surface that is truly evil so .
that the prosecutors, Scott strangled, they're suffocated, lazy on Christmas eve, early in the morning, or possibly the night before. And then after that, after he had done that .
dragger from the bedroom out to the car port, pick up truck back into the car port, take out the side door, wrap bed up, most likely loader into the bed of the truck, drive over to the warehouse, move over to the boat, cover the boat.
Then, after sending an email and putting together a woodworking tool on enforcement, believed he headed to the bay. But evidence of murder that was all circumstantial, they had no incriminating DNA, minimal forensics, just all those little strands. And in fact, I didn't know, always go well for the prosecution. As gara goes work to keep them off baLance.
we would try to present witnesses in a rono logical order in a way that made sense to our theory of the case. And they were very good at disrupting and saying, weren't not ready for that witness .
to just trying to throw a monkey range into your smooth telling of the story. If IT happened once, maybe was just coincident. If IT happened every single week, some point time, it's a plan.
IT got worse for the prosecution. Cara gos, who believe the modest to P. T, had that out for his client, try to make IT look like Kenny had hidden evidence. He asked him understand, did you delete information from a police report about lacy visiting Scott warehouse december twenty third?
The answer was, I did. And then, okay, we're done for the day. And like, no, can I answered and that .
was a very good point for him to make because that would create the impression that, in fact, like he didn't know about the boat, as Scott said, SHE did, and IT lent credibility to the rest of the story as a result.
Well, maybe, maybe not. But he couldn't got the whole story course.
The whole story wasn't what the defense attorney wanted, that the information was in another cops report that nothing had been hidden. But what did the jury think? What was your sense of how well that prosecution was going?
I was .
a bit concerned.
I felt that their burden of proving guilty under reasonable doubt, uh, had not yet been met.
But the big change, the sea change, was the day he walked in.
Walking in the courtroom, you could hear body shifting towards the door, uh, lot of pressure. Gott watched.
Amber fried told the jury everything from strawberry and champagne on their first date to a tearful confessional of losing his wife weeks before he went missing.
How did you lose her then before he was lost? Spring different.
And all those phone calls were played for the jury.
The jury could hear his words, of course, not his words under oath, but his words on the phone call to Amber. And how we lied and lied and lied and even light about lying.
marga goes, did what he could. He went after Amber, repeatedly question her about how much he had to drink on her dates with Scott, and about how often SHE and Scott. But how soon did the defense rattle you?
No, he tried.
Amber didn't buckle and the prosecution hit its dried and expert told the jury the baby died between december twenty third and december twenty. Another expert told the jury that places decomposition was consistent with three to six months in the water, and a search dog handler testified her dog picked up lacy sand at the berkely marino and said the prosecutors IT was obvious, got Peterson. kw.
Lacy and corner were gone for good. You'd even turn corners, nursery and to a storage room, put office furniture and pillows and a locking device from a car in there. Scott wasn't expecting corner to ever come home. Coming up this line cheek.
yes, he was a cheater, a liar, but a killer.
I mean, really.
who else could done?
IT glad you asked that question when deadline continues.
Four months into .
the trial, the defense got its chance to disprove the prosecution theory. We wanted to talk to attorney mark chartless about the trial. He didn't respond to a request. We wanted to talk to scot Peterson, but he was not interested, turned us down, said his family, because you didn't like my coverage of the case back in two thousand, three scots, frantic story, simply yet utterly baffling, was this. His family still insists he's an innocent man, and we wanted to hear that from them. They turned us down to and suggested we talk to a retired journalist name, Richard coal, who shares their point of view and said, the prosecution theory of the case makes no sense.
because that was so ridiculous, so that Peterson kills his one hundred and sixty pound wife, puts her body in the back of a truck, he then drives IT to his office to pick up the boat. And then what does he do with the dead body of his wife in a parking lot? He goes back into the office, spends an hour .
on the .
internet sending Christmas email to his boss. And then he said, oh, well, I guess I Better get rid of the body now.
Goal believes that media coverage biased against the defender somehow sit inside the courtroom.
This giant .
tic tsunami .
of media coverage, much of IT false, much of IT totally distorted, concentrated on things that had nothing to do with the evidence, and that basically, I think, consumed that little fact. Trial inside the courthouse.
the most damaging witness against Scott, he said, didn't see anything really related to a murder, but none. There's forever tainted, Scott, in the eyes of the public and the jury.
Once you started looking at that case through an Amber lens, everything he did was wrong.
The affair with Amber said, coal made everything scot did look sinister, but I didn't prove he killed lazy scot. Peterson was behaving pretty. Olly.
his behavior does look odd. He backed in himself into a horrible position. sure. He is thinking, if anyone ever finds out about this woman, not only will you look bad for me, but that will become what this story is about. And he was exactly right. So he very foolishly and not very well tried to keep her at bay with lives, thinking lacy will be home next week.
And that would explain why Scott head, from T. V. Cameras, not guilty about lc, guilt about Amber and cold mind. Scott acted like a man who had expected his wife to come home. So that said, coal is why Scott didn't want a thing on the car door, on the cops were surging his truck, so laces car.
though he did sell the car because, you know, he was not rich. The bitter son family isn't rich.
And Scott hand and hot about what he was, fishing force that cold, because the whole point of the trip was not so much to catch something, as IT was to test the boat before giving up to let this step that run grand sky as a Christmas present.
The boat was basically a kind of a gift. And that's why I was kept secret from the grass cue, because that was a Christmas thing.
Innocent said, but why does got tell Amber before they he vanished, I lost my wife. Amber confront Scotti about having a wife and he says, I losted her and this will be my first Christmas without her.
Yeah, Scott had had that line used on by a woman who was married. And he asked her he was married and he said, I lost my husband. And Scott decided that he liked that. And that was a really good line.
In other words, Scott was a cat, not a killer. So was a coal anyway. But then how to explain the strange similarities between Scott fishing story and the circumstances of the murder? But, you know, he went fishing in the bay. They found the bodies in the day. Yes, I mean, really, who else could have done?
IT glad you asked that question. Let's remember the scene, SHE disappears within a few days. Scots, I went fishing in berkeley. Story is all over the media.
So the real bad guys, maybe local sex offenders, or the two men arrested for the burglary across the street, took their victim to the bay and frame Scott that way. That's called theory, anyway, made more sense, he said, than the case against Scott. So what really happened on that cold december morning? Twelve people would decide the jury.
You have heard all the evidence and the arguments of the attorneys. And now IT is my duty to instruct on the law that applies to this case. After five months of trial, the jury went after deliberate. One day, two, the week, they stayed out and nobody knew. What were they .
thinking?
Coming up legacy in heaven .
and in heart life .
in the jury's hands.
IT is best to tear s.
Everything just comes cussing out.
And now, twenty years later, a new turn in the case.
Nearly two years after lacy disappeared, after nine days of deliberation, the jury and the scot Peterson trial, finally, they had a verdict .
that's pretty exciting and terrifying.
As the crowds gathered out front, the reporters got into position and everyone flooded back into the courtroom. But is a life for your level of anxiety.
I felt like I was going to explode.
