Welcome to Paranormal Radio. I'm your host, Nate Ratterman, and tonight I'm going to be talking to you about how I got started in the paranormal. But before we get started, please check out my website at nateratterman.com, also museumofshadows.com. So growing up, I would say I was 50-50, part believer, part skeptic.

I guess I would say, you know, show me the proof if a ghost or a spirit actually existed. When I was younger, I seen a lot of things that I always dismissed, you know, something out of the corner of your eye or, you know, something may have moved or a dark shadow figure when it was already dark in the room. And I just always played it off. Well, maybe I had an experience then.

But it wasn't until 2006 that I fully became a true 100% believer. So in 2006, I moved into this house that was built in 1940s. It was a brick house, very creepy vibe to it. You know, it was kind of dated. It needed a lot of upgrades, but it just gave you the chills. You know, just walking in the door.

Like all this weird energy. You could just feel it like the hair on your arms or on the back of your neck just stood up as if you were being watched and why are you here? That type of feeling.

It wasn't until when I was downstairs initially when I was walking through the home. That's when I seen something out of the corner of my eye. Once again, I just kind of dismissed it. What I saw was just like it was just a quick like dark mass that just shot by real quick. Probably a shadow figure. At the time, I didn't think anything of it.

And then moments later, I heard footsteps upstairs. And so I walk up there, and there was nobody in the home, which was interesting. So days go by. Everything's pretty calm and quiet. Then all of a sudden, I start to hear what sounded like footsteps coming up from the basement. Like you could hear every single step as if somebody was walking up the stairs. I'd stand in there in the kitchen. I'd wait. There'd be nobody there, which...

I thought it was interesting. And it would do that almost every night. And then it started getting even more frequent, you know, different times of the day. And so then I was just, I started closing that door and then the door would open. There was nothing there ever. This continued on for several weeks. And then it started getting even more intense. You know, maybe the kitchen chair would slide across the

the room or a cupboard door would open and then it turned out to be several cupboard doors would open and it actually got to the point where you could just tell like something was in the room with you. You could just feel this coldness, this energy out of nowhere. It just would hit just like that and your hair would just stand up and you were on edge

It just made you wonder, you know, what's going to happen. And then that's when I saw this dark shadowy figure appear in the kitchen. And then you could hear it. It would run down the stairs. And this happened several days in a row. And it's the same thing. As soon as I would see it, it would just run down the stairs. And so then I was like, okay. So I went downstairs and I started asking some questions. At the time, I was using...

a digital camera and a really cheap digital voice recorder and I would start snapping photos one after the other. About usually the fourth or fifth photo in, my camera would freeze. It would be locked as if, you know, I couldn't even take a picture. It'd be frozen on the last photo I took. And the only way to get it to reset itself would be to literally take the battery out and put it back in. So I thought, okay,

You know, maybe the camera's faulty. So I eventually switched it out and got a different one. Well, this happened several times again with a new camera. And then not long after taking these photos, there was always a light that had a pull chain light. And the chain would get pulled and the light would come on. And just randomly, it would just start or just turn on. And...

I think that's quite interesting as well, just because it was just random times when this would happen. And it was always after I saw this dark mass and it would like almost like it's leading me to the basement. And then you'd be awoken at like two in the morning to the washing machine running in the basement.

Keep in mind, this is also the light that was turning on by the pull chain was right above where this washing machine was. The washer would literally be going through a spin cycle at 2 in the morning, and you'd be awoken to it. Then you'd go down there, and then the lid would be up, as if something quick shut it off, but yet it was still on. It's just the lid was open.

So a lot of weird things started happening. That's when I really started investigating and I would set up cameras and I went out and bought a DVR system and started recording down there.

set up a live stream on a social media site and would live stream that camera 24-7 so people not only when I'm not there people around the world could be able to watch it as well and then report any evidence or findings but it got to the point too where this entity kept leading me down to the basement for months and

I didn't understand why this spirit wanted me to go down there. Well, now this is what gives me chills right here. So it happened, you know, I was like, okay, you know, light keeps turning on, something with the washing machine. So I called the plumber. They ruled that out. Called an electrician. They checked all the wiring. So the only thing I could have checked is the furnace. And...

Turns out the furnace was in the same room, right where that light's at, also where the washer and dryer is. And what gives me the chills is when I called the city, or called the furnace guy, they actually came out and then he called the city, and the city had to come out and actually shut down the gas line for a block radius because there was a gas leak. So the spirit...

I'm grateful for and it gives me the chills just talking about it because basically he and the reason why I say he is because I know it's a male and I'll explain that here soon but he basically was helping me and telling me like hey there's something going on down here and you need to get it fixed well after that the light never turned on again the washing machine never turned on again and

But then that's where I started to see this guy. And it was an older gentleman, pale face, suit, like a really fancy suit, hair nicely combed and parted. And I started doing research on the home. And I found that there was someone who died in the house. And it had a picture of...

of him in the local newspaper and he was exactly who I was seeing. And he would come in, middle of the night you'd be sound asleep and all of a sudden you'd hear the bedroom door open and you'd hear footsteps and then all of a sudden you'd see him standing there like at the end of the bed and then all of a sudden he'd be gone. There was all kinds of stuff. You'd see him in the kitchen and then of course heading down to the basement. But a lot of times you'd always see like this dark, you know, mass of

So he wasn't like taking full form at that time or, you know, basically appearing to show himself. But it's it's quite interesting for sure. But that's what made me a believer. And that's kind of how I got started in the paranormal. I was hooked, just started investigating the house. I caught a lot of crazy different photos and apparition on video and in photo and

a lot of EVPs, I've disembodied voices, you know, stuff, just random stuff getting moved and, and turned on at all hours of the night. And I, I've been hooked ever since. And that's like, I want to understand, you know, I wanted to understand more. And, and,

And that's what started my paranormal career. I wanted to go and investigate other locations or different places that, whether it was a home or business, that people were experiencing some sort of paranormal activity because I wanted to understand more for myself and also be able to help them because of what I just went through.

So that's basically how I got started in the field. And I was in 2006 and I've been hooked ever since. And I don't see an end in sight. I will probably most likely be investigating until the day I die. And not long after posting a lot of that evidence out there of my old house, A&E reached out to me about filming an episode of my ghost story. So of course I did that.

And now I own the Museum of Shadows, which has been voted one of the most haunted museums in the world. I have the largest collection of verified haunted artifacts in the world. I've been seen on Travel Channel, Discovery, Destination America, A&E, Amazon Prime, and many more.
