Vice President J.D. Vance has warned U.S. allies to keep a light-touch approach to tech regulation or risk being left out. Vance addressed world leaders at an AI summit in Paris today. He said the U.S. is winning the race to build the best artificial intelligence training chips and the most advanced AI algorithms and, quote, intends to keep it that way.

His remarks stood in contrast to the push by other leaders at the summit to agree on a common set of principles that they say will lead to safe AI systems that are energy efficient and available to the developing world.

The European Union says it'll spend roughly $206 billion to catch up with the U.S. and China in the AI race. The plan, dubbed Invest AI, will fund so-called AI gigafactories, facilities that rely on powerful chips to train the most complex AI models. The commission's initial funding for Invest AI will come from existing EU programs, though member states can also contribute.

And BuzzFeed says it's designing an AI-driven social media platform as the company continues its business overhaul. The digital media company says its platform will contrast with algorithm-centric ones that currently exist and focus on interactive storytelling, new content formats, and AI tools. Once a darling of the digital media ecosystem that disrupted more legacy institutions, BuzzFeed has since shrunk in size and relevance in recent years.
