Both cities, though geographically distant, evoke a sense of historical connection to maritime activity and global trade. The host draws parallels between Montreal's Old Port, once bustling with sailors and international commerce, and Ningbo's Sanjiangkou, visualizing similar scenes of vibrant exchange and human stories. Leonard Cohen's song "Suzanne," set in Montreal and mentioning tea and oranges from China, further strengthens this association.
Ningbo's historical global connections are evident in its diaspora communities and their influence. "Red Gang" tailors from Ningbo established themselves in Yokohama and Hong Kong, shaping fashion trends. The restaurant "Weixin Hao" in Tokyo, founded by a Ningbo native, became a hub for Chinese intellectuals and political figures like Zhou Enlai and Chiang Kai-shek. Shipping magnate Pao Yue-kong, another Ningbo native, played a crucial role in Hong Kong's economic and political landscape.
The Tianyi Pavilion, a historic private library, symbolizes Ningbo's intellectual tradition and its reverence for knowledge. The library's extensive collection of ancient texts and local gazetteers served as a center for cultural exchange and learning. Despite its turbulent history and the loss of some of its collection, the Tianyi Pavilion continues to represent a powerful intellectual legacy and provides a sense of continuity and stability to the city.
The Siming Guild Hall incident, which occurred around 1898 in Shanghai, demonstrated the unity and resilience of the Ningbo community. When the French Concession attempted to expand its territory by encroaching upon the Siming Guild Hall, the Ningbo residents protested vehemently, ultimately succeeding in protecting their rights. This event resonated with the rising nationalist sentiment of the time and solidified the Ningbo people's reputation for solidarity and resistance.
Ningbo's unique blend of historical richness, modern development, and manageable size makes it an attractive setting for writing. The city's well-preserved ancient architecture, combined with its contemporary urban landscape, creates a stimulating environment for reflection. The host also appreciates Ningbo's culinary offerings, especially the seafood described by writer Su Qing, and the city's overall calming atmosphere.
Su Qing emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural flavors of ingredients in Ningbo cuisine, contrasting it with the elaborate seasoning practices of Cantonese and Suzhou cooking. She highlights dishes like steamed yellow croaker, salted crab, and bamboo shoots prepared with minimal additions, allowing the inherent tastes to shine through. She also mentions the preference for dried foods and the use of high-quality soy sauce.
