Man shot by police at caravan park at Elderslie following suspected siege

This is Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on 2GB. Great to be with you this Thursday evening, 131873 is our number. Now, situation continuing to evolve in Sydney's south-west this afternoon where there has been a shooting. There was a siege within a caravan park, Elderslea.

in the Macarthur region, not far from Camden. It started just after lunchtime and it has gone for some hours. The police riot squad was actually called in and they surrounded the perimeter of where a particular caravan was located within that park. And I've been looking at some vision of the caravan park. There's a lot of on-site vans there where people effectively almost live most of the year.

And the police have been involved in a confrontation with a man who we understand was armed with a knife. He had been threatening self-harm. Just after four o'clock, so it's only around an hour ago, shots rung out. Now, our understanding is that it's alleged the man had lunged at police with that knife.

and the police had opened fire. I'm hearing as many as three shots had been fired towards the man. Now, he has then been taken to hospital. There's been a police convoy all the way to Liverpool Hospital from this caravan park in Elderslie. And the man is now being treated in hospital. We don't have details of his condition. We are still seeking a formal response from the police, but the police have given us some basic information about what has occurred. Actually,

It says a critical incident investigation has been declared after a man was shot by police during a siege in Sydney's southwest area.

At 12.15, police were called to a caravan park, MacArthur Road at Eldersley, to check on the welfare of an occupant. Officers from Camden Police Area Command attended a cabin at the property. They attempted to speak to a 52-year-old man. A perimeter was established after the man armed himself with a knife and made threats to self-harm. Specialist resources attended to assist. Negotiators attended to speak to the man. The man refused to cooperate. Just before 3.30, officers attached to the Tactical Operations Unit...

gained entry to the premises and the armed man rushed officers with a knife. Police discharged a taser and the less than lethal tactical rounds, which were ineffective before the man was shot.

The man was immediately treated by New South Wales Ambulance paramedics on the scene, taken to Liverpool Hospital. Critical. A critical incident team from the State's Crime Command's Homicide Squad will lead the investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission. So that's the extent of the official police statement. He has then, in the course of trying to speak with this man, he didn't cooperate with the police. He has then lunged at them with a knife. Police actually brought in the tactical operations unit, so effectively police with heavily riot gear police.

Now, during this confrontation, police used the taser. They've discharged the taser. That has not been effective, so they have opened fire. The man's been treated on the scene by paramedics. He's been taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition where he remains.
