About Grandpa George Mellor
George Mellor is my very own Grandpa! He was a farmer who’s, so far, lived to be 96 years old. His farm was the first in his region to implement irrigation.
Food Differences in the Last 100 Years
Recording this episode with my Grandpa is by far one of my favorite moments with this podcast. George Mellor brings a wealth of insight and experience from his 96 years on this planet. Especially, but not limited to, what he believes contributes to his good health and longevity.
George shares with us how food production differs now from when he grew up. He explains how there wasn’t any access to fresh meat over the summers, so he and his family relied on no meat or, sometimes, canned meat.
Being a farmer was a demanding lifestyle, but George ensured he made time for rest and rejuvenation. Some of his favorite ways to replenish himself were fishing and hunting - getting deeply comfortable with nature.
Community and Faith Matters
One of the other biggest contributing factors George attributes his longevity to is community. Just like the importance of community in places like Italy, which has the largest population of centenarians, even at home in the United States, we need more emphasis on the people and society surrounding us.
Other aspects that George counts as major keys of his longevity: drinking plenty of water, staying resilient through everything, and having a strong faith.
Finally, George lets us in on his best breakfast secrets: bacon and eggs as often as possible, and heart-health, wallet-friendly oatmeal.
What are some of your favorite breakfast foods? How do you rely on your community? What’s your best memory with your grandpa? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.)
