Potential savings were vary discounts not available in all states and situations. It's on a play, isn't IT I saying is a really guilty.

I wouldn't do anything and I felt guilty about. You may think you know the Charles s. Matter story, but none like this things .

that police have never seen before.

Sharon, take, beg her.

please don't kill me. He was primed to take advantage of peace and love flower power.

Even now, almost fifty years later, the world is still fascinated by Charles s. Manson and his crimes. Tonight we take you inside his world of drugs.

He would lose them with elsy sex.

He sleep with all those .

girls and rocks and roll.

They really did listen to the light album over and .

over with new interviews. He says, gary, this is your last chance and new details. He would always frame his statements. This is what I believe in. The girls' all believed that the murder these people were brutally butchered. The may have charlie was acting minor towards the girls, the madman, maybe I should have killed four or five hundred people, then I would have felt Better.

He symbolizes the horr that can be possible in this world.

I'm lester holt, and this is deadline. Here's Keith Morris in with the summer of manson.

All that remains our ruins the ramshackle barker ranch is long, long, only the fitful baking death valley wind left out. The sir, that faded bits, the rest in junk, the artifacts from another time when this was ground zero for one of the most informed crimes in history, the hide out of a living person direction of you've got stuck in your brain and everybody, Charles. One hot, dry weekend in los Angeles, August one thousand sixty nine, a pregnant movie star slaughtered, along with four others in her home cross town, a couple butcher in theirs.

These were brutal crime scenes, things that but the police had never seen before.

mood so bloody, so ugly. They rewrote history, became a kind of bookmark as an error of optimism ended. And the darker time began. The sixties came to a close, one thousand nine hundred and sixty nine, and that was the current, and that was the final current.

Who could make sense of IT? Oh, even now, how do our kids end up doing this kind of incredibly violent crime? How did that happen? But do our best to answer that question to get past the myths that have cloud of the story of Charles manson, and with the help of those who witnessed, finally explain the chaos, the crimes, the horror. It's a story that begins with a small milk town on the banks of the ohio river. Make american west, where the myth manson fun had its beginning.

Manson had told his own life story that he was a child. Nobody wanted his mother's a career criminal and prostitute.

but matson lied. This is jeff win, author of menton, the man whose research revealed the facts behind the miss.

Manson was raised by a very loving family, his uncle and ant and his grandmother. These were folks who were very religious, and they, of course, wanted charly to go to church, which he hated. But he had an amazing neg to memorize scripture.

He was fascinated, particularly with the book of revelation, which he learned to quote at great length. But he did not learn to be good. He .

constantly stall. He lied. He picked on people he was fascinated with, knives and nothing you would do to try to discipline any anymore.

Finally, manson was sent to reform school. Eventually, prisons, by thirty two, had spent half his life locked up.

He was immediately struck by the pym s. From them. He learned how to control women who were, and this is his quote, bent, but not broken.

And son also became fascinated with a popular book by deal ky. Cold.

how to win friends and influence people.

This is so strange. Hear that he read dale carnegie.

Not only read dale carnegie, absorb IT.

that wasn't the only thing manson picked up in prison. Another inmate gave him guitar lessons. One day in the prison workshop, a radio was blaring the top forty of one thousand nine hundred and sixty four.

He hears a song by the beetles. And so he sets a goal for himself of becoming even Better than the beetles. And he starts writing songs and performing in prison shows.

So by the time charlie manson was released from prison on parole, his fantasy was very strong.

He would be signed to a contract, would become world famous, rich and have all the women and drugs he wanted .

the fantasy and Charles means in himself, but almost certainly have remained anonymous, a complete unknown that had not been for this sand forces goes haas's very district, where that very moment in one thousand and sixty seven bus loads of kids were arriving. What they thought would be a new world of peace and love. There be hundreds of people sitting on the sidewalk and go grass as a speed. Roger Smith was mentioned parole officer in safran ago, and into that thing worked charly imation. He did.

He could somehow identify the ones who could be tripped, coerce, dragon .

bench, but not broken trouble. Young women like Susan actions SHE left home as a teenager and drifted, washed up in the hate. SHE worked as a top lest dancer quit and then fell under mansion spell, regnant her CD.

Later there was lessen van helton, who got into drugs, ran away from home, had an abortion and then met him. People magazines. Alane ardea has written about matson.

He slept with all those girls right away, making a connection with them, and they felt this man gets me.

He kept eating women who was onto oge, and they went with him everywhere, even to meet and fert with his parole officer, who heard first ten mansons preaching to his flock, an odd ball, mixed free love, social commentary and apocalyptic facies. I found a lot of a step pretty silly, but even always frame his statements. This is what I believe in. The girls all believed that the girls hung on every word he spoke, seemed ready to do anything he asked, like when he told them to have sex with men he wanted to win over, or when he told them he was destined to be bigger than the beatles.

Manson fully intended to become a rock and roll star and didn't think I was gonna very hard.

The summer of love was over. Manson loaded his family. They now number to about a half a dozen onto a school bus and took until los Angeles, he was still at a small time, criminal with a dream.

那是 忘。 A beach boy and Charles manson. When we returned, Dennis is convinced that he could make charlie a star and many strange hold on his family.

He dancers these things. He looks beautiful. He looks happy. And this draws a lot of people.

Los Angeles, one thousand nine hundred and sixty eight, the center of the rock and roll l. Here with capital records, the beetles record company, the sunset strip. And here the producers who could make Charles meant in a star.

He positioned his family out here in a wooded haven. The alternative living called to panga kenyon. He lived on a place in panic canyon.

IT was a burned out house. Eric carlson was living nearby. In his first T. V interview, he told us how he got to know manson and is very available. Young woman, they would come over to get to take showers and stuff, and stuff does. He said city was called sexy city and not without cause.

What's exactly erik's house or shower to offer? Mind you, the main occupant in owner of the house in which eric was living was a soft spoken music teacher named gary human. Just generous, basically.

And he never charged me any red. What soever when some of the man and women were busted for a spree of minor crimes, charlie came over, and gary, if you could help them. Well, he says, well, what's the what's the bail? Of course, gary hindman, as he generously paid the bail, had no idea how manson would return his favor.

Matched another family moved to plan, get to a defunct western movie location called spd ranch. A few miles, father out. Manson told another of his followers then that from who was nicknamed sweet ky, to keep the ox genre or or happy. So the family, in exchange for a few chores, got to live on the ranch for free.

H, he looks beautiful, he looks happy. And this draws a lot of people, just like people are joined the little babies, they crowds for food and trash, dusters, said former family member barbaro. He was fun.

Go behind the story that used to throw away some good stuff, good vegetables, to find all kinds of treasures out there. But the family didn't just live on scavenge vegetables. They stole cash and credit cards, cars. Manson taught them a skill he called creepy, crawling, entering houses at night without waking the sleeping people inside that he used his woman to advance his dream of becoming famous.

Sends them out into the parts of us Angeles that are known as areas where the rock stars live to find some of them, do what IT takes and get them to take charly on a sort of their project that that they will introduce him to the right people.

Ridiculous, of course. But then the most extraordinary thing IT worked then is picked up a couple of girls on on sensor, every hit hiking. Dennis was Dennis Wilson of the beach boys at the time, america's answer to the beach.

Les rg Jacobs son with a music producer, one friend that that is Wilson, they went to denis is house. They had a good time, like music, and involve the things that they would do. Mention system worked like a charm, offering his Young women as sexual favors to get what he wanted.

Before the day was out, he and most of the family had moved right in to denis Wilson's house. Is to call me up and said, a great command down parting all all these girls, I hear charlie got to meet charlie. The wizard Dennis is convinced that he could make charly a star, and so improbable is IT seen.

Dennis took manson to his brother brian studio that bryan will to record some of the songs. Here's manson singing during that session. Reste says, the wind, this town is killing me.

But when the other beach boys actually heard that they didn't have a very high opinion of the music or charly the session. But the beach boys did play one of manson songs on the mike dog was TV show. But denis rewrote the words and the title, oh, charlie was so angry that anybody would dare to change the lytic, change anything.

He said he was like misquoting him. So the beach boys were not the answer, demands and dreams. But there was one more chance, greg Jacobs and new a man and los Angeles who could snap his finger and get mense in the contract. His name was Terry mulcher, one of those top music producers.

And in the late spring of sixty nine million agreed to come to sponge ranch to hear men's insane charly almost expected somebody to pull out a contract in a pan and say, here's sign here with you now have A A contract with columbia records. But there was to be no contract because later, Terry miles politely but firmly rejected charlie manson. Charlie was really crushed.

He would not be a rocket and roll star. He would not be rich and famous. He was a failure which demands men, said as parole officer Roger smith.

Charlie was seen serious danger of losing the family. He did something that our politicians are massively at, and that is, he creates this, this horrible thing out there. And there's going to be a race war.

IT was a time of racial strife in america, especially in L. A. And mention blended that information somehow with the book of revelation to profit armagnac world ending race war he called healthy skelter.

After one of the songs on the beetle's White album, his followers believed IT. But did he just Smith isn't so sure. I think that was basically used to keep them focused and maybe even divert attention from the fact that he was not doing well in terms of realizing his dream time to move. He told his family, gather money, cars, get to the desert to wait out the war between the races, where, again, the mansion story might have disappeared from history without a rip or a trace except. Coming up a day in the life of a manson family.

every day, he would gather everyone together and dose them .

Charlie and had come to those ends with the plan to be bigger than the beetles by the summer of sixty nine. He knew that wasn't going to happen, and that's what manson told his followers they had doing night, something he called health scully, an imminent world destroying race war, which he named for regions only. He knew after a song on the beetle's weight album.

they're going to go in the desert, stay there for one hundred and fifty years while the black man takes over. But then they're gonna need him later. And that's when he's going to come out as the master race and be the leader of everyone.

This is ridiculous. Of course.

IT is ridiculous, but combination of drugs been isolated. He had them all convinced that this was real.

He was serious about this. yeah. The world, yeah. He believed that, or so he persuaded his followers. He told them he needed complete loyalty and complete control.

Every day he would gather everyone together and dsm with elliston, and he would talk for a while.

That's one for his bench, but not broken flock. Manson portrait himself as the new jesus, but not a sweet and kindness version of jesus. Charlie was acting miner towards the girls that if they failed ed to follow his directions, you kitch in the head with a stick.

He went from good Charles. Yeah, he really got mean, mean and desperate to find the money and cars to take his family to death vali where he told them they'd weight out health scouter and who had bunny cars, his music teacher friend, gary hinman. And we knew all of that area.

Carson was wisky when match and cold and mate demands. He's telling gary that's time for him to join the family because this whole helter sculpture was coming and that he needed to cash out all of his investments and go with the family and go out to the desert, gary told mansion. No, but the man who become used to getting what he wanted persisted.

He says, gary, this is your last chance. If you don't do this, I will not be responsible for the karma. You will vote upon yourself. Karma, mens and style. Then he said, a friend of the family named bobbi bossi, along with loyal family members Susan actions and mary brunner to shake down gary for me.

all any money, any money.

Eventually, bosley cold manson.

manson comes down. He's wearing a sd and he's waving around charlie. Actually, a slice is part of depart again.

Mansons followers tortured gary herman for three days until he finally signed over the pink slips for his cars. But then he threatened to call the police .

both of the calls. Manson again. What what we're going to do, manson says, you know what? You have .

to do both. I stabbed gary human, and then mary brunner and Susan actions finished him the pillow over his face. Gary died because he didn't want to give up his money in the car.

Yes, but basically important that he become a part of. What become a part of will kill you. The revolutions coming, a lot of people going to die.

Manson had a turn for these people. Piggy, another song from the White album, if you want to be one of the piggy. Today's porkers, tomorrow s bacon. So on lens orders on the wall of geri's house, they wrote the words political piggy and left to pop print all in the victim's blood, hoping IT would lead the police to suspect black paths committed the murder.

The canny police come to investigate. It's a murder, but they don't anyway link IT to a black revolutionary execution .

mansons misdirection failed. In less than a week, bobbi boss lay was pulled over, driving one of gary hinman's cars where police found a bloody knife. Both of I called mass and from jail, demanding help and saying he hadn't read IT on him yet. Jeff win believes manson decided on a plan to spring bossy and save his own skin.

Family members at spon ranter talking about what's happened to Bobby, he's in prison. What's gonna happen? How can we break him out?

They did hatch a plan so horrible that the name charly means would be famous, all right? Not as a star, but as a symbol of evil. Coming up held your skeelty a night of madness and marter charted .

quite naturally, screaming she's begging not for her life, but for her babies Susan action says, bitch, I have no sympathy for you.

Auto six thousand nine hundred and sixty nine bobbi bossa was in jail accused of murdering gerry hindman. Charlie Martin was afraid, but I might talk, implicate him in the family. And then an idea, a crazy, horrible idea.

They are watching some old James cagney movie where he's in the in jail for for these murders. They do these copy cat murder to prove that he's not the one. And that's what charly manson decided to commit murder.

So similar to what they did to himself that the cops would have to think the real killers were still on the loose. And if they thought that they'd released bobbi boss L. A. But the key to these copycat killings matter decided was to find a high profile victim.

If it's somebody famous, and the newspapers in the TV are making a big deal out of IT, then IT all work. You'll have to let Bobby out freeboard .

bi and maybe touch off health sculls in the bargain by framing the black counters. August eight, one thousand nine hundred and sixty nine, late Susan actions sexy city brest in black and headed out of spon ranch. Sad hung out of the car window and you we're onna kill some pigs also with the car, tex Watson, Patricia crane vehicle and Linda sabean target whoever lived in the house recently vacated by Terry melcher, who months earlier had politely blown off mansons hopes for a record deal. Whoever is living .

there now has to be rich and famous. Nobody go to ford a house like that.

And i'd actually been at out earlier that year looking for Terry moulder. He moved out. But that son encounter the current resident actress, Sharon tate, pregnant wife, a film director, roman polanski.

Now, tex climbed a telephone pole and cut wires to that very same house. They all went over the gate. Just then, a Young man named Stephen parent, who had been visiting the property caretaker, was headed out of the driveway.

Tex, confronted with a knife, then shot him several times. The killing had begun with cassava, and standing guard Susan patria and text went inside the house. Blanky was out of the country that night, but his friend void text by costi was asleep on the couch. Text kicked him. Susan actions went to see who else was there.

SHE starts down the hallway and there's a guest bedroom and there's a woman sitting up in bed. It's ambigu soldiers .

Susan acting, gives the little finger wave back, continues the m hall in .

the bedroom SHE found Sharon tate and jay sebring, a celebrity hair addresser and tate former boyfriend SHE hurted them into the living entity. Maria is J. C.

So everyone was left for dead, except Sharon tate.

She's begging not for her life, but for her babies. Susan adkins says, bitch, I have no sympathy for you .

and SHE is slaughtered. Then, Susan, I can rock the word pig in blood on the front door to make sure the cops would connect these murders. Gary hinman's .

murder. They arrive back at the range, charlie man waiting for me. What you do tell me about IT and they telling, and he's furious from their description, he doesn't think they've left the house. Appalling enough that you will get the attention they wind.

So that win. Manson himself returned to the house and draped in american flag near Sharon tates body.

Manson, with a sense of theater, thought that would be the .

thing that .

would really, really make everybody gas and pay attention.

A movie actress and four of her friends were murdered, and the circumstances were lord bally mutilated, decided not discuss, but nobody made a link to gary hima boss. Lay remained in jail.

Charlie was serious, then screwed up. He blamed .

them very much.

So if they're done IT right .

to do the tonight.

In this time, i'm going with you to make sure he gets done properly.

He took his band of killers on the tour of los Angeles, looking for just the right innocent victims. There was a street man, and kw had been to a party there in the most famous area of L. A.

He picked the house next door. No idea who lived there. IT was the home of leno and rosemary lobby anka charly says.

when they're outside the lobby, alcohol that he'll go in, he'll check IT out. Charlie comes back out, gets text. Watson, they go in first. They capture reno lobby anka he tires, lobby ancha up, ask, because anybody else here, my wife's .

in the bedroom, then got tex Watson, Patricia cm, vehicle, unless we ve been helped me, but big to go with them this time Charles .

tells them going there, do what you need to do. And he drives off in the car.

The lobby cas died as brutally as those the night before about the blind food gay, the crime scene created to horrify about the humans grow death. Healthy sketch, miss bet have been written in blood on the refrigerator and carve neto, leo lyon, cas torso. That was one word war. Surely no one could miss that message. Coming up, the killing still wasn't over.

This was the one murder that manson was personally involved in.

and how a jail house finally brings the nightmare to an end when deadline continues.

There were many funerals that week in the summer of sixty nine, too many one for the beautiful Sharon tate, many of hollywood, they turned up for the funeral, despite the fact that I was built as a private family affair. Families watch the shocking news on TV, including the manson family, and follow our barba H. I remember be unscared by that.

How do they react to the news? They laugh, didn't bother them at all. Early matson thought he had would win the police for sure that they would think the same people who killed tate and the love yang is also killed gary human.

And so they are free family member Bobby, both ally. But even though there was talked to the tate and lobby of murder might be connected to each other, police today could speculate whether these two crimes have been done by the same person. No one connected them to the hindman case.

The plan failed. Bobby both stayed in jail. And if that was in frustrating enough for manson, just six days after the lobby yona murders, more than one hundred shero deputies descended on the family.

They decide they're going to have a huge RAID on span range. They're going to arrest .

everybody in IT. But the rate turned out to be good news for charly manson because IT didn't have anything to do with murder. The warrant was for auto theft, totally unrelated, and even that charge didn't stick.

Manson uses, this is a great example. See how powerful he is. They arrested all of us, but I used my power and they're letting us go.

L times ran a small story about the car theft rate, along with an article about the tate murder and the of the Younger murder. Each story completely separate. But mine was sill on edge, especially after he found out a ranch.

And shortly shade was trying to get the family kicked out of spon ranch. Barba hot, remembers what happened next. I heard a scream and I bolt IT up.

Is there any way to describe what that sound just pure? Or did you have any idea whether there was a human or an animal I knew was shorty, you knew was short? I recognize the voice.

This was the one murder that manson was personally involved in, and he was sort of hacked to pieces.

Manson decided IT was time to get out of L. A. Maybe he was feeding the heat from that ray, or maybe he wanted an even more remote place to keep his family under .

his control. To him, the whole idea of control is not just having people worship you, but having people following your orders in ways that contrasting common sense.

that is, fleeing an apocalyptic race war. Help her sculpture. He moved them out to an old homestead called barker ranch, over two hundred miles from los Angeles, now part of death valley national park. Yes, death valley.

During this war, he will lead his family into death valley, where there is a bottomest pit in a city underneath the surface. They will go down there and be safe.

He seriously thought there was something beneath the earth where all of you going hide and escape to raise war. Rivers of milk and honey trees with different kinds of fruit. Bara hoy remained loyal to manson until, as he tells them out in the desert one day, SHE overheard Susan actions delete link describing the murder of shantay, and sudenly feared for her own life.

I knew I had to get out of there. So early one morning, barba and a friend took a huge risk. We walked out.

You walked out. Yeah, we walked out the end of the heat of death valley. They walked from miles to the nearest ranch, said barbera. And SHE eventually reunited with her real family, but the rest of the mentioned family stayed busy in the desert.

The families up to its old tricks. There's cars stolen. There's different destination of national monument areas.

all of which once again drew the notice of law enforcement during two rates. In october, they rounded up most of the family. The last to be captured was manson himself hiding under the bathroom sink.

He told authorities his name was manson. Charles N. A, K.

A, jesus Christ, god, the chinese were other in arson. They'd face similar charges before, had beaten iraq before. But this time something unexpected, completely out of mentioned control. Somebody in the family squealed about Susan action and her role, and gary hinman's murder. So atkins was moved from a jail near death valley to those Angeles.

SHE couldn't stay quiet, but he started sharing this incredible and unbelievable story.

Atkins boosted to a fellow inmate named Virginia graham m. About the Sharon tate murder. SHE said, you who did IT don't you? And I looked at her and I said, no, I don't and her words to me, where where you're looking at her atkins told virgenes gram every hittites detail, even mocking one of her victims.

He was screaming, help, help somebody. Please help me and he said, and nobody came and we killed him. Virginia told the cars. Police apparently got their break in the take case when this girl suan actions was arrested and talk to associate about to take killing.

Four months after the tate in lobby oncogenes Charles mansion and servers of his followers were died for murder, he come to L. A seeking fame. He was about to find IT coming up.

What of the mansion family hadn't been stopped? Who might have been next? Elizabeth yeller, Steve mcqueen. And thanks, anatta.

Then good day. I don't have good. I know what I done.

Play isn't from a van about to be tried for one of the most natta ous killing spree in american history. I think mr. Manson feels that he is a product, our society.

The case went to the late vince in blue oc, a Young prosecutor at the time, I step conversation with mans and all the time charly, I said, i'm going to convict you I said, but after you get a fair while blio, he tried to flip family members to testify against manson. Most state for rocio, sly, loyal and some of those not charged staged demonstrations outside the courthouse, even shaved their heads and show solidarity. You know, we die.

We do anything for a brother chat, Susan. Actions were supposed to be a key witness. SHE had bragged about the kills in jail, then told the whole story to a grand jury, me, how you feel, dad, is that what actions we counted? So will I O C.

Turn to Virginia grain? One of the two fellow jail inmates at consider confess to graham told the jury how at conduit describe that take in lobby ona mere, there wasn't a sign of remorse of anything. In fact, IT was almost very beautiful.

And that can vote. They were just getting started at grain. They had a plan to murder a list celebrities. I was tom Jones, a lizabeth iller, Steve queen and Frank sopra.

They were going to sill him alive and make purses out of IT and sell IT on honey wood bove art Virginia graham testimony made different page, one of many headlines in a trial that lasted some seven months. The jury hearing the charges against Charles manson and three girl members of his so called family brought in its verdict this afternoon. All were found guilty of murder in the first degree.

Manson and several members of the family were sentence to death for the state in lobby Young, a murder, a career making Victory for prosecute vince in bulimic I, who was in thein, that the sentence was richly deserved in view of the incredible brutality of the savage, nightmarish murder. The death penalty unquestionably was the proper birthday in this. But then a little over a year later, IT all changed.

The california press court ruled today that the death penalty is on constitutional. There would be no gas chAmber for manson or any of his convicted family members. Do you believe that there should be a death penalty? Aren't we are all born to die, born with a death? I believe what i'm told to believe.

Don't you? Because of that california states supreme court ruling, the sentences were reduced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole even permanent. And that touched off a debate that still rage's decades later.

Can people like these be rehabilitated? Should they ever be released? There are so many reasons why i'm against pro.

Anthony d. Maria has spent most of his adult life fighting parole for the killing of his uncle. J, C, bring, when somebody says, well, i've changed every habilis ata way you might have.

But your victims are dusty and rotting in a grave. Over the years, manson, tex Watson, patra cin vehicle and Susan ekins all had parle hearings each time. They were quickly denied, but less levan how seemed to have some hope of being paroled.

This was her hearing in two thousand. It's really hard to live with the murder. I accept responsibility. I know that what I did is inexcusable.

Then harton was recommended for perl on five different occasions, but each time the governor's office overrule the decision, and character sister Debra was relieved. I don't think he deserves that these people were brutally butcher. There has to be some kind of accountability in this world.

There just simply has to be. And he doesn't stop what a person is. Sixty five. But then in the spring of twenty twenty three, dever take up the news he had feared for years.

The california court of appeal overruled the governor and granted then houten's sparrell, now the man behind IT, all who wanted IT so desperately to be famous. After nearly fifty years in prison, Charles s. Manson had become a shell of his former self, frail and in ill health.

One of his friends told us he believed manson was suffering from early stages of dementia. Shortly after eighty third birthday in november of two thousand seventeen, Charles mills manson died of natural causes up until his last day on earth. Never even a hint remorse.

I haven't done anything. I'm ashamed of guilty, and I wont do anything that I guilty about. Ancient, his family still seem to occupy some dark corner of our imagination. But that jeff win is time to strip away the mystery and stop burnishing the legend of Charles manson.

We can't stop what manson did. We can't stop this thing. If he's notorious, let him be notorious for what he is. This horrible social path.

The small man who used his talent such as they were to become not just a symbol of the loss of innocence or of nativity, but in a during lesson in how not to be a human being. That's all for now. I'm less to halt. Thanks for joining us.
