Today's tip is to make mid-year resolutions.
There is no reason to wait for New Year's if you want to change something in your life. Now is a good time too. And in the next six months, there is no telling what you might accomplish. Lots of people make New Year's resolutions around January 1st. And as we all know, not everyone keeps their New Year's resolutions. Life gets complicated and change can be hard. And sometimes,
People don't know how to make resolutions that actually work. As we talked about in a previous episode this week, it can be wiser to focus on process goals rather than outcome goals. A process goal focuses on the frequent small actions that might add up to the desired outcome, but are generally good in their own right and help us maintain a sense of agency.
But regardless, there is nothing magical about January 1st. If we make New Year's resolutions, we can equally make mid-year resolutions. The second half of the year begins on July 1st. So what would you like to focus on? If things are going well, your mid-year resolutions might be to continue or finish your New Year's resolutions. As we talked about this week, I set a goal to read all the works of Jane Austen this year.
I've read a bit over half in the first half of the year, so my resolution for the second half is to complete that project. I began doing strength training regularly with a trainer early in the year, and so my mid-year resolution is to continue that. But maybe life has changed or things haven't gone quite as intended. If that is the case, would you like to refocus on any of your New Year's goals now? Or maybe you'd like to set some entirely new ones.
The marathon training plan didn't quite work out, but you could run two local 5Ks with your family in the second half of the year. Maybe you wanted to get a promotion, but your entire department was laid off. You could now focus on spending a certain amount of time, like two to three hours per day, on your job search and then relaxing and trying to enjoy life the rest of the time. Or maybe you decided that your New Year's goals weren't ambitious enough.
In the second half of the year, you could ramp things up, adding an extra workout per week or finishing that draft of your novel when you had just hoped to get started. Life always benefits from reflection. We naturally do this at the end of the year and the start of the new one, but 365 days is a long time. We forget about things or we fail to redirect our motivation. By setting mid-year goals, we can continue what has gone well
and change what needs to be changed, and make the most of the six months to come. In the meantime, this is Laura. Thanks for listening. And here's to making the most of our time. Hey, everybody. I'd love to hear from you. You can send me your tips, your questions, or anything else.
