Hi, thank you for listening to Chasing Life, a podcast aimed to help encourage you to chase a positive, healthy, and fulfilling life. I'm your host, Sarah Kane, and I'm so grateful you decided to join me. I'm a single 30-something dog mom, runner, and higher educational professional.
After struggling with a quarter-life crisis where I learned a lot about myself, I pursued and earned my MBA, got the good job, bought a house, but still struggle with fulfillment and continue to chase goals in running my career and life. I feel called to share what I've learned and continue to learn in the hopes that my story and tips will help make an impact on your day and help you feel less alone. Let's chase life together.
Hello and welcome to another episode of Chasing Life. This is Sarah and today I want to talk about the power of one person. So I was encouraged to share this message because earlier this week I shared a quote on my Facebook page and a friend of mine commented this was exactly what I needed today.
And really, that's my hope when I share quotes or messages on my Facebook page, through this podcast, through different avenues, that maybe it will just help one person. Maybe it's exactly what they needed to read. Maybe it's exactly the kind of encouragement that they needed. Maybe they were finally open to that message. There's a lot of things that occur in our life that
maybe close us off to a certain message. But after a few weeks, months, years, whatever the case may be, it
It's finally an opportunity for you to be open to that message and make a change. So that's what I want to talk about today. And part of it, this was also inspired by the fact that one random person at a craft event had a huge impact on my life and they don't even know it. So a year and a half ago, my mom and I went to this local craft event.
event and we were making doormats. We were, you know, doing the stenciling and the painting. And I overheard a conversation of this girl talking about this running camp that was about an hour south of where I live in the Poconos in Pennsylvania.
And I just kept hearing talk about how it was an opportunity for people to go for runs or climb rock walls or go on a trapeze. And all of it just sounded amazing to me. And so when I got home, I googled it and ended up signing up for it. I knew nothing about the camp. I knew nothing.
nothing about anyone who was going there. And I probably should have walked up to that girl in that craft event and asked her more about it. But being the introverted person that I am, I just went home and Googled it instead. So it was a random conversation that I overheard. And when I went to the camp, which was now a year ago in September of 2019, I had the absolutely best time of my life. That's one of my favorite vacations that I've ever been on.
It was three days in the Poconos at this summer camp and it's called Camp Runabout. This camp's motto is a little bit of running and a lot of fun and it was exactly that. There was opportunities to go running in the morning if we wanted but the rest of the day it was all camp activities so you could go swimming though it was kind of cold in September.
You could go on the paddle boards at the lake. You could climb a rock wall. You could do a zip line. You could do a trapeze. You could do arts and crafts. You could do tie-dye. Anything that you think of that you do at a children's summer camp was available to us as adults at this camp.
Even some of the directors say, you know, we honestly don't care if somebody just comes and hangs out at the cabins and reads all day. If that's what they want to do, we provide that opportunity. There's activities for people to join. If they want to join them, great. If they don't, that's no problem too. Then they also have group events. They had a karaoke night. They had a campfire. They had a dance that was themed. So it was just a great time together.
There was activities planned throughout the day, but there was also time to kind of just wind down and hang out with people. What made it so great for me was that it was a chance to just be myself. Because it was a running camp and being a runner myself, I knew that I could at least have a conversation with somebody there because we had one thing in common and that was running.
So it didn't matter that I didn't go with a friend. In fact, it was probably better that I didn't because then I could meet new people and I could just completely be myself.
And it felt like going away to college where you get to start over. You get to start fresh. But it was three days and you just got a chance to forget the world. And the kind of nice thing was that cell service didn't really work that great. So it really provided that chance to just disconnect from the world, to immerse yourself in having fun, trying new things. All of that resulted from...
Just a random conversation that I overheard. And as a result of this camp, too, I also met people from all over the country that I still am in touch with. We have Zoom calls. We do virtual runs together. We have a group text message that we plug into and send messages to each other on Fridays or just around the holidays, whatever.
Whenever we have something good or bad to share, we are sending messages to each other. And it's just this really great connection that we developed at this camp that I wouldn't have gone to if it wasn't for one random person. So I just kind of wanted to share that message today because maybe you are that person to someone and you don't even know it. So I just want you to be encouraged to continue to show up, share your positive messages, and
Whatever it is that you enjoy doing, keep bringing that light to others because you never know who is going to need it that day. And if you want any more information about the camp that I shared about, you can just go to camprunabout.com. This is not a sponsorship, but I do have a code that you could use if you're interested in attending.
Um, it's K-A-N-E five zero, and that will save you on any registration. I highly encourage anyone to go. They have two camps, one in the Pennsylvania and one in North Carolina now. So it's really just a great chance to get away, go with your girlfriends, go alone, but just try something new. Um,
So I hope this was a message that maybe you needed to hear today. It was a little bit of rambling about camp, but the core message is that one person can make a difference and that person might be you. Thank you for listening.
