Picture a pick up truck. What comes to mind? Maybe some of the classics, the chevy c.
perhaps the trucks .
you can depend on the trucks that were heavy trucks.
Or maybe one of the four f serious trucks now in their fourteenth generation.
Some trucks are gone for only one thing, rough work. But you take a sixty seven ford pick up. You are proud to take you anywhere. It's ready for anything, work or pleasure. OK.
Now, picture an electric pick up. Looks about the same. right? Ford even makes an electric f one fifty that looks just like a gas powered models in the U. S.
Companies have been making trucks for over a hundred years, and the general look has remained pretty much the same. Tesla decided to break the old. Tesla holds a strong grip on the E.
V market in the U. S. Last year, IT accounted for about fifty five percent of all battery power vehicle sold. The company has a market value of over half a trillion dollars.
When the company started out on the design of a cyber truck, tesla chief designers says, CEO elon musk gave him very few guiding instructions. Must wanted an electric pick up with good driving dynamics and a covered bed. And for IT to quote, feel like the future. If you ask the journal auto colonist Daniel, i'll tell you, mission accomplished.
The cyberspace in my whole decades of doing this job is one, a few real new things that has ever come along.
Dan got to test drive tesla's new electric pickup, and he says the cyber trucks, angular planes and steel body are showing us a glimpse of the future of the american E. V. Truck and perhaps evs in general. From the wall street journal, this is the future of everything. I'm shorely garden burg, and today we're talking about the cyber truck.
Is IT a manship? Is IT a movie problem? Is IT real?
The cyberbullying definitely real, but is IT also a sign of things to come for E V design, for truck, for tesla? When we come back, Daniele takes us behind the wheel.

MC colleague journal auto column, Daniel has been writing about autumn bills for over twenty five years. Then are you car guy?
Ah, I am. I am a car guy. I started as a car child in order to understand .
what makes the cyber truck so different from the truck that have come before IT I S. And about the quintin tio truck design. He took me all the way back to the covered wagon, and a configuration known as the three box design.
One thing that unites are these designs over the decades, and even the centuries, is the general layout, the congo, where the horses are at front, the driver sits in a cab elevated, looking out over the horses, directing the horses. And in the back is the open cab of the three box design works. And it's become atheling and a technical expectation for all buyers of pick hos. And you you mess with these formulas at your paarl.
The cyber truck is not your typical three box design, with the engine out in front, followed by the cab where the driver and passengers ers sit and then the truck bed behind.
The shape of the cyber chocolate is a prismatic a uh thing. It's hard to break IT apart in a way that conventional cab trucks can be. It'll never be anything but the cyber truck. You can't take the bad hair and put a campo on at or something. It's always going to look like the cyber truck on some way is a kind of inflexible and dedicated specific design.
The cyber truck cuts a singular sillah te. It's a long civil rectangle with a scale triangle sitting on top. You know, one of those triangles where the three sides are all different length.
Anyway, there are no curve lines or bulging surfaces. IT makes me think of driving over a rough terrain on mars rather than hauling supplies in the american heart land, dan says. Part of the reason the cyber truck is different is because IT can be different. Well.
one thing in cyber truck does is that takes advantage of these inherent opportunities in electric design, one of which is the compartmentalise ation in the packaging of specific electronic components such as inverters, batteries, motor's, uh half shafts at powered to exos. You can do a lot of things because the packaging space is on the order of half.
What IT is for an internal combustion engine, the engine is not in front or in the back or underneath is actually hidden. There are two of them, or in some cases, three small electric motors to put out hundreds of horse power a piece. That's one of the advantages of an electric vehicle as you can get an enormous amount power and talk at relatively small packages.
Earlier this year, dan got to test drive the cyber truck for forty eight hours. The twenty twenty four test cybernetic all we will drive foundation edition, to be exact, that's pressed to one hundred thousand dollars. So we chat about IT, starting with its iconic casing, which until recently only came in an unpainted silver.
The thing is made out of the most amazing outline, steel, almost like a tool steel, always like a drill bit steel. And it's on the outside of this thing.
Why bother making IT out of this steel?
Here is the argument. A lot of outdoor pick up truck are too fancy to go off, because if you take them off, you get scratch and precision. And people don't want make one hundred hour a month payments on attractive worth of that.
The cyber drug, however, comes back. And there's not a scratch on IT. You could hate IT with a million shopping cards.
and I would never OK take me inside the card. You open the door, you sit down.
What do you see the interior of the cyber truck? A shares with other test of its spare design ethos, uh, spare to the point of air listeners. It's hyper, hyper hygienic. And like other text, les IT has a almost no physical switches or controls beyond the steering wheel and the rotterdam lector .
on the wheel. So it's a it's like a nob instead.
Ah two yeah two bs ago this way, that way a mouse control type, the turn seconds are integrated into the steering wheel, which as I left hander took me a moment to be aware of every single time I use.
So what would you like to drive?
So you get IT on the highway and the cyber truck t sits up tall. You have a lot of cameras to rely on. Its pretty easy on level ground to sit out and down is not great at the real quarter visibility.
And he has a very little tiny and adorable little reviewing just the time is thing. But IT is bristling with cameras and bristling with sensors. And their argument is that, a, you have Better visibility with all the sensors in cameras and so forth, then you would with a conventional truck using just line of site.
The suspend is very soft, very sophisticated, very synthetic tic, uh, because he has air springs with adaptive suspension and has a very uh high frequency loop to adjust the daming. And the tires themselves are giant, and they are blown up to fifty one psi IT feels like, you know, life after, if you are, have life after inflated ble raft that that that float and flavor feeling ah is like that. And then it's it's dead quiet. The damn thing is dead quiet. unbelievable.
No, I was going to ask you, like, what is IT sound like I have all these lake, right? Very muscular sounds in my head.
IT won't make yummy engine sounds, if that's what you thinking. No, IT doesn't do that test. I didn't .
play that because it's electric. So so with the truck, a good drive overall.
yes. Oh my god. IT has a couple of very, very odd driving characteristics.
One is the steering rack response is one hundred and eighty degrees. So IT turns one way this way. IT turns one way this way, lock to lock.
But IT doesn't go over. H, you know how we turn like hand over her hand when you're like, you know you're making a ride, one hand, an accent goal.
almost the whole around. You just go right into you. You're go into the ditch because this thing like really twitchy and the first five minutes of having all that steering gain with that little input IT was, you know, that takes a little getting used to very much like a go card.
Well, it's almost like tesla wants to physically change how we are inside of a car. I mean, the way I Operate a steering wheel and the way I like click the blinker up and down, I mean, this is, this is almost muscle memory.
You're so old, so old. No, no, you've just got to change. Well.
i'm not sure i'm ready to change. But dance says cyber truck may be the vehicle of the future, but whose future is IT? And what does that mean for tesla and its competitors? We get into those questions after the break.

at A W S dot com flash. Learn more. Alright, then after delays and much anticipation, the cyber truck hit the market late last november. How are people generally reacting to IT?
People are completely lipped out. If you try and design a truck that doesn't look exactly like a truck, that's the conversation that will emerge. We know in our mind what a truck supposed to be, of course, the breaks that in every possible way, in a very delivered, and I would say, insulant way they wanted to kick, say, and in the face of the big bully on the beach.
no, but a lot of people have up call IT ugly.
I know and um this just goes to show how culturally determined this opinion is you know it's just the shock of the new. And overall, I would say that IT is a luxury experience top the bottom and and if you want to be the center of attention, if attention is your thing, h this is your the cymatic is, uh a very aspirational product. It's what an E B pick up might be if have to have no parents and all the money in the world.
Okay OK, okay, okay. If you're considering buying a cyber truck, then what are you .
comparing IT to only one real competitor?
Now the riva so the riva aran tea pickup truck starts around seventy thousand dollars, and then the cyber truck can run you anywhere from sixty to one hundred thousand dollars, depending on the features. If i'm comparing these two, what am I gonna from? A revision versus .
a cyber truck? Is alpha omega right? Is completely, it's apple onan. Diane sian, the thing about the cyber truck is that IT is polonium the same? IT expects more of humans than humans necessarily prepared to give.
IT has a rationality and a rectitude, and an appropriate is that is beyond the kind of mortal al men. Where is a more dansie arrival with the soft tige? IT has a huh, a humanistic face, a humanistic vibe, okay.
but more than just the vibe, the revision range isn't the same as the cybersex. According to tesla, the cyber truck has a range of as much as three hundred and forty miles on a single charge. And then if you top up but a supercharger for fifteen minutes, you get one hundred and thirty six miles more. And revision says their EV pickup has an estimated two hundred and seventy miles of range, with the higher and rival that goes up to three hundred and fifteen miles. Why is there such a big difference?
The big problem is weight. They called mass optimization. But the point is that the revision uh for all its technical achievement h gives up something in terms of its manufacturing, which translates to its IT was much happier.
So if I were to summarize some of your big takeaway, the cyber truck gets some high Marks for engineering and drive and it's it's the boy to beat in terms of other E, V pickup. But you are also making that sound like kind of a show peace. What does that mean for the future of electric truck design?
The type track is what would call a in other companies, in other parts of the IT is the most uh, expensive, most extreme, most desirable, most aspirational, most out there version of a look in a technology that could come down to, uh, a more mainstream mass market, a solution.
For example, when I look at the cyber truck, I seek trouble for domestic automakers a because IT does a lot of things that they will never do, and IT does IT in a very, very cool way. They also speak to Younger consumers in a way that detroit, they're just not speaking to them in that that love language, if you will. I think the hypocritic moves the ball on design in a way that we hadn't really seen fifty years, moves the ball on technology, uh, uh, uh, as a piece. And apart from the cars, IT has a marketing promotion value that is incalculable。
Think is a word. How might we see the influence of the cyber truck design .
in future evs? The cyber ck broke A D expect more of S A visually unorthodox in and and provocative a designs in a segment that is traditional and uh, slow to move, slow to adopt things. IT was such a such an earthquake visually that IT opens the opportunity for a lot more of fun things.
The future of everything is a production of the world street journal. This episode was produced by me, charlie garden berg. Thanks for listening.
