During the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change in 2022, more commonly known as COP27, it came to light that there is pressure from the countries included in the meeting for Paraguay to adhere to the methane reduction pact, which could affect their livestock production.

In this sense, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Moisés Santiago Bertoni, assured that the Executive has made the decision not to sign the agreement until they have more details on what this reduction would be like.

“This is a position that has already been discussed in Paraguay, in the Climate Change Commission chaired by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (Mades), and there it was agreed. We are not clear about the mechanisms of how this pact will work, so we, protecting our interests, prefer not to do it until we have more clarity, ”he reported in communication with 680 AM.

According to the minister, the proposal is to reduce methane emissions to a commitment of 30% by 2030, although, as he mentioned, it is not clear how the emission reduction will be; It would probably be reducing our cattle herd together with the rice industry, which are part of the greatest economic pushes in the country.

During this summit, the minister held a series of meetings with his peers from different countries, where they discussed and emphasized the current reality of agricultural and livestock production and public policies related to the sector and its climate implications.

Bertoni met with the members of the Southern Agricultural Council (CAS), at the IICA stand, and later participated in a panel of Ministers, where the central issue addressed was alternatives to the climate crisis, through innovation and leadership in the Americas.

A focal point and axis of all conversations is to continue contributing to global food security from the Americas, in order to maintain sustainability and growth globally.

The increase in food insecurity and the global climate situation are two interconnected crises that pose a threat to the entire planet and must be urgently and jointly addressed, as defined by the regional representatives.

More than a hundred Heads of State and Government will attend the most important event on the planet on global warming and its effects, which in this edition includes on its agenda for the first time the losses and damages associated with climate change.

But despite the international commitment to limit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, several of the leaders of the world's largest economies and most polluting countries, such as Russia, India or China, will not be present at the summit with high-ranking representatives. range.
