The Leader of the Opposition visited the Science Expo
The Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Nationalist Party Simon Busuttil this morning visited the Science Expo organized by the NSTF at the MCAST Institute of Applied Science in Paola. Simon Busuttil was welcomed by the Secretary General of NSTF Francis Stivala and by the Coordinator in NSTF on Science Programs Carl Agius.
The Leader of the Opposition visited a number of classes in which several Primary students from Church and State Schools were doing experiments on applied science. Simon Busuttil also appreciated the creative works that were uploaded by students of the Secondary School and from MCAST itself, while praising their efforts to create truly original projects.
In two words to journalists at the end of the visit, the Leader of the Opposition praised the Science Expo, which he described as an impressive display. He praised the NSTF because year after year, the students are living and experiencing science with the purpose of the subject being followed. Simon Busuttil was impressed by the superior level of the experiments and the students, who not only presented a document with information about their project, but were able to communicate their creativity with others.
Simon Busuttil stressed that the Opposition would like to see the Government continue to push Science, Creativity and Innovation. The Leader of the Opposition stated that this is an area where the Government and the Opposition can seek consensus so that there are more initiatives on science in the country. It is hoped that by 2020, the Government will spend 2% of the Budget on research and innovation.
For his part, the Secretary General of NSTF stated that this year's Expo attracted the interest of 46 Schools and brought about 6,000 students to it. Francis Stivala said that the aim of the NSTF is to reduce the discrepancy in science activities that take place abroad and those that are organized locally. Therefore, in Malta, emphasis is being placed so that in schools, students come up with original ideas and develop projects related to science and information technology.
