I uncover the most cutting edge health information on the planet, ranging from hormones, nutrition, supplementation, fat loss, biohacking, longevity, wellness, and a whole lot more. Welcome to the Boost Your Biology podcast. Is there any research to suggest that honey can boost testosterone levels in humans?

Unfortunately, the reality is there is no human data to suggest that honey can boost testosterone levels in humans. However, that still doesn't stop me from personally consuming honey. And I personally think that honey is beneficial for testosterone production. As I mentioned before, there are no human studies to suggest that honey can boost testosterone.

However, there is some pretty interesting and impressive research in rodents that may hint that honey is beneficial for supporting testicular health and also testosterone production. And I personally think honey is a very useful and beneficial carbohydrate source to replenish glycogen levels post-exercise and also act as a tool to support our energy levels.

And I'm also just thinking about if I were to walk into, let's say, a quick mart or like a supermarket that's like a 24-7 supermarket and I had to get like an immediate carbohydrate fix that I knew was going to be at least beneficial for my hormones, I would actually pick up, you know, a small sachet of honey and I'd personally consume honey as my sweet carbohydrate refeed.

So here we can see how honey may be able to support testosterone levels in humans. And we'll look at some of the mechanisms of action here. We know that honey consists of flavonoids and non-flavonoids, so phenolic compounds or phenolic acids. We can see that honey contains one of the, it's one of the richest sources of chrysan. And chrysan is actually historically being used as an aromatase inhibitor.

And we can see that chrysan can actually enhance the

star gene expression, it can inhibit aromatase activity. And we can also see that quercetin also affects and blocks the effects of chemical toxicity in the leydig cells. So basically, what we're seeing here is that honey is full of antioxidants and flavonoids that can support leydig cell function and potentially contribute to better luteinizing hormone release.

and that supports latex cell function, therefore affecting testosterone production and output. So this is pretty interesting research. Now, this study here was titled the effect of mad honey on testosterone levels in male rats or of male rats. And what they noted here was that free testosterone levels were significantly higher in the mad honey group than in the normal honey and control groups

And there were no statistically significant differences that were determined for other hormonal measurements. Again, this is a rat study. Whether or not this translates to humans is questionable, but it is promising nonetheless. And we can see that in traditional medicine in Turkey or traditional Turkish medicine, mad honey was actually used to improve appetite, to heighten mental alertness, to reduce joint pain,

and also eliminate gastrointestinal system pains and to increase sexual performance as well. So, you know, is this research strong enough to convince you whether or not you should consume honey? That's up to you guys to decide.

We know that honey has been used for thousands of years. We know it's had a lot of beneficial studies conducted on it as far as like a powerful glycogen replenishment food source. We know it contains antioxidants, phytochemicals, it's natural. There are many benefits associated with honey consumption. There are different studies utilizing honey in different types of rats, particularly male rats. And they're looking at how

honey can affect testosterone production. They noted that there was a positive increase, an increase in testosterone in a variety of these rodent studies. So again, hinting towards the benefits

may be translating to humans as well. So in conclusion, collectively, the mainstream of this specific research approach reveals that oral administration of honey enhances serum testosterone levels in males or male rats. The mechanisms by which honey increases serum testosterone may be by enhancing the production of luteinizing hormone, enhancing the viability of latic cells,

reducing testicular oxidative injury, enhancing star gene expression, inhibiting aromatase activity in the testes. In addition, honey was found to contain various bioactive compounds, phenolic acids that may improve testosterone production.

However, still there is a lack in the number of human studies in this research context. Therefore conducting clinical trials that reveal the mechanisms of honey on serum testosterone levels will be of great importance, which is basically what I was hinting to before is that promising research in rats, great mechanisms of action,

Whether or not it translates to humans is questionable, but that does not stop me from consuming honey. And I personally think that honey is going to be beneficial specifically for male endocrinology, male hormonal health. Now, interestingly, we also must remember the function of a sex hormone binding globulin and how might honey work to increase free testosterone.

Now remember that there is pretty strong evidence to suggest that or leaning towards that fructose can actually lower sex hormone binding globulin. And this study here was looking at the potential for SHBG to be affected through fructose consumption.

And what they noted was that the monosaccharide glucose and fructose induced hepatic lipogenesis reduced SHBG production by down-regulating hepatocyte nuclear factor 4A, a key transcription factor regulating hepatic expression of sex hormone binding globulin. For those guys looking to optimize their overall energy vitality, if they wanna know the things that I use in my own shopping list, in my own grocery list,
