Colossal Biosciences leads de-extinction efforts, focusing on the woolly mammoth and dire wolf. They aim to create a cold-resistant elephant hybrid using CRISPR technology, with hopes to produce the first mammoth-like calf by 2028. A major milestone was the creation of "woolly mice" with mammoth traits. Colossal also succeeded in genetically modifying gray wolf cells to produce the first dire wolf pups. Additionally, they’ve cloned red wolves, a critically endangered species. While the company highlights conservation and technological advances, some scientists raise ethical concerns about the ecological impacts and well-being of these engineered animals.
