Mocha Dick was a real-life giant sperm whale, infamous in the early 19th century for his size, albino appearance, and ferocity in battles with whalers near Mocha Island off Chile. Known to survive numerous harpoons, he became a legend among sailors. His exploits were documented in Jeremiah N. Reynolds’ 1839 article, “Mocha Dick: Or the White Whale of the Pacific.” This account inspired Herman Melville’s creation of Moby Dick, the central antagonist of his 1851 novel. While Mocha Dick symbolizes the perilous relationship between humans and nature, Melville’s Moby Dick expands this symbolism, exploring themes of obsession, vengeance, and existential struggle.
