The photos above show interesting pictorial tiles, or huaxiangzhuan, dated between the third and fifth centuries. They are on show at the Picturing All Beings exhibition, at the National Museum of China until Sept 14 (Tuesday).

上面的图是不是很有意思呢？这些都是画像砖，烧制时间在公元3到5世纪的魏晋时期，目前展出于国博的《图画众生》展上。

什么是画像砖？

Huaxiangzhuan

is a sculpted brick or a brick depicting vivid pictures and patterns.

如名所指，就是雕刻有图案、或者直接在上面画了花纹和图像情节的砖。

When did huaxiangzhuan begin?

画像砖什么时候出现的？

The art began in the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), boomed in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and continued throughout the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

我国在战国时期开始出现画像砖这种工艺，两汉时最为兴盛，并一直延续到元代。

What subjects are normally painted on huaxiangzhuan?

画像砖上一般都画的什么呢？

Craftsmen drew inspiration from the material and spiritual worlds of ancient China. They captured almost all aspects of people’s social life: farming, rearing silkworms, hunting, feasting and entertaining, among many other activities. They also visualized deities and animals from mythologies.

画像砖反映了古人的物质生活和精神世界。工匠们大多取材自社会生活的方方面面，包括农耕、养蚕、狩猎、宴会和娱乐等等场景；同时也有表现神话、刻画仙人神兽的内容。

What messages can we learn from huaxiangzhuan?

画像砖传达了什么信息呢？

The views on life, death and the afterlife held by ancient Chinese, as well as their religious beliefs and understanding of the universe.

小小的一块砖凝结了古人的生死观、宗教观，对于死后世界的想象和寄托，以及他们对宇宙空间的感知。
