Jose first noticed blood in his stool, followed by intense abdominal pain, cramping, and debilitating fatigue. These symptoms persisted and worsened over time, leading to frequent restroom urgency and an inability to maintain his daily routine, including attending college classes and boxing training.
Jose initially dismissed his symptoms as a stomach bug or something he ate, believing it would pass. Additionally, cultural factors played a role; in his Latin household, visiting the doctor was avoided unless absolutely necessary. This mindset led him to delay seeking medical attention until his symptoms became unbearable.
Jose was initially diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive tract. The diagnosis was devastating, as it meant lifelong management of symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss. At 18, Jose feared how the disease would affect his future, including his education and boxing career.
Despite the diagnosis, Jose's symptoms persisted and worsened. He experienced severe fatigue, weight loss (dropping to 100 pounds), and frequent hospitalizations. Treatment plans, including medications and dietary changes, provided little relief, leading to a decline in his overall health and quality of life.
Jose and his mother sought a second opinion at a pediatric gastroenterology center, where he was correctly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, another form of inflammatory bowel disease. This new diagnosis came with a more effective treatment plan, including medications that provided temporary relief and a better understanding of his condition.
Jose underwent a three-part surgical sequence: a total colectomy (removal of the large intestine), followed by the creation of a J-pouch, and finally, the reversal of his ostomy. These surgeries were necessary to manage his severe symptoms and improve his quality of life, though they came with significant physical and emotional challenges.
Jose's journey inspired him to work with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, where he supports others living with inflammatory bowel disease. He volunteers at camps for children with IBD, sharing his story and offering hope. His experience taught him resilience, gratitude, and the importance of community, transforming his struggle into a source of strength and purpose.
Jose emphasizes the importance of maintaining faith, hope, and an attitude of gratitude. He encourages seeking help, resources, and support, and never giving up, even in the face of adversity. His story serves as a reminder that challenges can lead to personal growth and positive change.
