  • Assam NRC coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma wrote a letter to all Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Registrar of Citizen Registration (DRCR) seeking details of ineligible persons from the final NRC list. The letter dated February 19 reads: “… it has come to the knowledge of the undersigned that after publication of final NRC on 31st August 2019, few names of ineligible persons are found present in the final NRC…As such, you are requested to share the details of such persons who are ineligible for inclusion in NRC but whose names got included in NRC in addition to the list shared earlier….” Around 1.9 million people being left out in Assam where the NRC exercise was concluded on August 31 last year.

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) will launch a spot Aadhaar enrollment drive during its three-day-long Financial Inclusion Outreach Initiative for North East starting in the city from February 26. The drive is aimed at increasing the number of SBI and other banks’ customers to link Aadhaar with their accounts. The Financial Inclusion Outreach Initiative will be held at the playground of the College of Veterinary Science at Khanapara from February 26 to 28. Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will attend the event on February 27.

  • A sum of Rs 1 cr donated by Bollywood star Akshay Kumar will be utilized to construct a highland at Kaziranga National Park, claim reports. The construction will tale place at Bandardubi range of the national park to help the animals during floods. Funds will also be utilized to renovate a few forest camps and other infrastructure development. Last year, Kumar was among the first to donate Rs 2 crore towards the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund after ravaging flood situation in Assam wreaked havoc with over 90 human lives lost and hundreds of animals killed in the famed Kaziranga National Park.

  • Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh informed the state Assembly that Manipur is considering legalizing cannabis plantation in the state. Singh was responding to a query at the Legislative Assembly. “The primary purpose of the legalisation will be solely for medicinal and industrial purposes,” the CM said.

  • US President Donald Trump will discuss issues related to religious freedom during his official visit to India, said a White House official. While responding to a query on CAA and NRC during a conference, a White House official said, “President Trump will talk about our shared tradition of democracy and religious freedom both in his public remarks and then certainly in private. He will raise these issues, particularly the religious freedom issue, which is extremely important to this administration.”

  • The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has discovered around 3,000 tonnes of gold worth Rs 12 lakh crore in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh.The newly discovered reserve is expected to give a huge boost to the economy. The discovered reserves are five times more than the current reserve of the country. The mines currently spread over an area of 108 hectares. The area will now be demarcated. This will be followed by the process of e-tendering through which mining contracts will be awarded to interested companies, an official told reporters. Officials are also trying to learn if other useful minerals such as uranium can be found within the area. An aerial survey for 15 days was conducted to see if any rare minerals can be located in the area. It was in 1992-93 when GSI had started the work of finding reserves in this area.
