Hi, Dr. Laura. Thank you so much for taking my call. You're welcome. Great honor. I really appreciate it.
My, my issue is with two of my children. I have four. Two are already off and out of the house and in college. My two that are at home are a 13 year old daughter and a seven year old son. My seven year old son has been diagnosed with autism and
kind of unspecified delays. The issue I'm having is with my 13 year old daughter. There's times where my son will lash out and it can get physical, whether, you know, he hits her or maybe he'll pull her hair. And sometimes,
I'm trying to work on that with him on the side. But the problem is, is that she gets very upset with me thinking that I'm not handling it right or that he gets away with it. That's right. Totally. She's right. And I'm trying to... Because there's no magical way for you to solve this except to see how much you can keep them apart. Okay.

Is there anything in particular I can tell her to help her understand that it's different? No, she's getting hit and yanked and you are spending your time trying to control and make him feel better. And this is damaging your relationship with her. I don't know how to give you a quick fix, but she has got to feel that you're protecting her and she doesn't. She has to tolerate abuse.
No matter what his reason is, no matter what the circumstance is, you're asking her to tolerate abuse. So under what conditions do they tend to be together? Mostly in the afternoons. And they typically get along great. They're very close. I think it's the evenings when it gets...
you know, when they're at the end of the day and... Okay, occupy him with something else at those times. Make sure he's occupied. Okay. Whatever it is that occupies him. Make sure he's occupied and you're hanging with your daughter and so we can repair this. Protect her. She needs to be protected. I will. Okay, I needed to hear that. Okay. And I need to... I'm going to let her know that I'm sorry that I haven't. I feel really bad.
I know. And that's good to tell her that. She just wants to know that she matters, you know, and it's not just him. Yeah. And this is a huge burden on you. Of course. Huge, huge. Are you married? I am, yeah. Is he the dad of all of these? Okay. Nighttime maybe, dad can take a little more responsibility for the son. Okay. Yeah.
Okay. I appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you for being honest with me. It's a better thing if we do what we can to avoid it. And you're right. At the end of the day, his self-control is gone. So we know that now. Have him occupied otherwise. I will do that. Sometimes avoidance is everything. And if the rest of the time he's been able to control himself,
himself, that's great. And they get along great, but he's not, this violent stuff, yeah, concerned about when he gets older, if that's what he's prone to. My number, that's why we need to keep him busy. 1-800-375-2872. If you like this podcast, be sure to rate it on Apple Podcasts or your favorite place to listen to my podcast.
