In the third episode of this series about the indirect speech (or reported speech), we’ll have a look at changes other than verb forms that happen when the introductory verb is in the past tense. It’s not as complicated as it may sound! You actually do the same thing in English (maybe without even being aware of these changes)

Il dit: “J’ai fait du camping la semaine dernière”
Il dit qu’il a fait du camping la semaine dernière
Il a dit qu’il avait fait du camping la semaine précédente.
Prochain,e -> Suivant,e
Je lui rappelle que c’est la Fête des Mères dimanche prochain.
Je lui ai rappelé que c’était la Fête des Mères le dimanche suivant
Hier ?La veille
Qu’est-ce que vous avez mangé hier?
Le médecin lui a demandé ce qu’il avait mangé la veille.
Demain -> Le lendemain
Il faudra aller faire les courses demain.
Nous avons constaté qu’il faudrait aller faire des courses le lendemain.
Après-demain ? Le surlendemain
Aujourd’hui -> Ce jour-là
Il est malade aujourd’hui.
Il n’est pas venu à la réunion car il était malade ce jour-là.
En ce moment -> A ce moment-là
En ce moment, je prépare un épisode pour le podcast.
Je n’ai pas répondu au téléphone parce que je préparais un épisode pour le podcast à ce moment-là.
Dans quelques jours ?Quelques jours plus tard
Revenez dans quelques jours!
On m’a conseillé de revenir quelques jours plus tard.
Ici -> Là / là-bas
