What’s the past historic tense? Also called “simple past” or “preterite”, or “passé simple” in French, this tense is rarely used and even after years of teaching thousands of students, I have never taught it. I’ll explain when and where you can find this tense, why I find unnecessary to teach it and what you can do to just go around it easily!

“Il jeta (= jeter) les bases de la microbiologie, mit (= mettre) en évidence le rôle des germes dans la propagation des maladies infectieuses, inventa (= inventer) la pasteurisation, et mit (mettre)au point des vaccins contre plusieurs maladies. […]
Il pensait en effet que l’origine et le développement des maladies étaient comparables à la fermentation. […] Le débat [sur la théorie des germes] dura (= durer) plusieurs années, puis les recherches de Pasteur plaidèrent (= plaider) en sa faveur. Au cours de sa carrière, Pasteur put (= pouvoir) développer la théorie des germes pour expliquer plusieurs maladies.[…]
Vaccin contre la rage : Pasteur passa (= passer) le reste de sa vie à identifier différents facteurs pathogènes, responsables de maladies telles que les septicémies, le choléra, le choléra aviaire, la diphtérie, la tuberculose et la variole. Il travailla (= travailler) à leur prévention grâce à la vaccination. Ses recherches portèrent (= porter) en particulier sur la rage, maladie mortelle dans la plupart des cas. À la suite d’expériences sur la salive d’animaux affectés par cette maladie, Pasteur conclut (= conclure) qu’elle se localisait dans le système nerveux. […]
Pasteur mourut (= mourir) à Saint-Cloud, le 28 septembre 1895. Il était depuis longtemps un héros national. Des funérailles nationales furent (= être) organisées en son honneur à la cathédrale Notre-Dame. »
