Shownotes Transcript

On this week's show we'll be talking to Cornell Cooperative Extension's--Dan Wixted about assessing pesticide hazard and risk. We'll use glyphosate as an example since it's the most commonly used forestry herbicide for controlling interfering plants. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the commercially well-known label "Roundup." We'll also discuss hazards and risks surrounding alternatives to pesticides and how that might influence "Integrated Pest Management."

Dan is a Extension Support Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension's Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP). At PSEP, Dan is tasked with:

  • Pesticide applicator training manuals

  • Ordering applicator training manuals and Cornell Crop and Pest Management Guidelines

  • Health and environmental effects of glyphosate (e.g., Roundup)

  • General pesticide safety and use (e.g., regulations, reading a label, exposure concerns)
