This work is partly the result of an ongoing research project On the history of the Indian national movement conductor conducted under the direction of Bipan Chandra and finance by the Indian Council of social science research a special feature of the project is that apart from utilising traditional sources such as archives private papers institutional papers and newspapers it has attempted to use the experience and understanding of the grassroots level participants in the national movement
