What's your name in English? In each lesson of this 25-part series, you'll encounter a common question that English learners come across and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how each of these key phrases works by breaking them down into each component.

Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations. In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question, What's your name? What is your name? The first word in the question is... What? This is a question word used to ask for more information. What? Listen again and repeat. What?

This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is? Is. Meaning, to exist. Is. Now repeat. Is. Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.

What is? The next word in the question is... Your. Meaning, belonging to you. Your. Now repeat. Your. Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat. What is your? And the last one is... Name. This is the word by which an object or person is known. Name. Now repeat. Name. Listen to the entire question and repeat.

What is your name? You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question, What's your name? My name is Lisa. Listen again as you hear the phrase slowly. Repeat the phrase. My name is Lisa. Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is My meaning something belonging to me.

My. Now repeat. My. And next is? Name. This is the word by which an object or person is known. Name. Now repeat. Name. And next is? Is. Meaning, to exist. Is. Now repeat. Is. Next is? Lisa. Which is the name Lisa? Lisa. Now repeat. Lisa.

Listen to the entire phrase again and then repeat. My name is Lisa. To expand on the pattern, let's replace Lisa with Peter. Peter. Peter, a person's name. Peter. Peter. Listen to the phrase again, this time with Peter. My name is Peter. You'll see that it's almost the same. Simply replace Lisa with Peter. Say, my name is Peter. My name is Peter.

Let's try another and replace Peter with Sarah. Sarah. Sarah, a person's name. Sarah. Sarah. Listen to the phrase again, this time with Sarah. My name is Sarah. Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name Peter with Sarah. Now say, my name is Sarah. My name is Sarah. For more practice, replace Sarah with Victor. Victor.

Victor, a person's name. Victor. Victor. Listen to the phrase again, this time with Victor. My name is Victor. Again, all you have to do is replace the name. Now, try saying, My name is Victor. My name is Victor. Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting the United States and someone asks you your name. Your name is Lisa. How will you answer? What is your name?

My name is Lisa. Now your name is Peter. Respond to the question again. What is your name? My name is Peter. Imagine your name is Sarah. Answer the speaker's question. What is your name? My name is Sarah. Imagine your name is Victor. How will you respond? What is your name? My name is Victor. Now imagine that you want to learn that person's name. Ask the question. What is your name?

Now it's time to answer the question with your own name. Be sure to practice out loud. What is your name? This is the end of Lesson 1.
