Kirby Smart on the dismissal of wide receiver Rah-Rah Thomas yesterday after practice.
On Rara, I had a chance to sit down and meet with him face-to-face Tuesday, which I think was really important, and let him know that he can no longer be a part of the football team. And he understands that, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward. So there's a position...
You're probably not overly concerned about it, Greg, in its wide receiver because of the depth that they have there, but don't have a lot like what he was going to be able to offer the stature, physicality on the outside. So going to be a blow, but they do have other personnel that can offset this loss. Yeah, and you look at last year's team as well. You have Rah-Rah and Rosamie Jackson.
So two kind of bigger, plus Bowers. So three guys that were kind of physically imposing, a little bit bigger. So those guys not being there. And Lovett is not a guy that's going to win a lot of contested catches. He's a catch-and-run guy, but he's great. So it does kind of impact them a little bit to have that many guys that aren't going to be around. But they have tons of wideouts. It just might not be as big as what we thought it might be coming into the season.
All right, Kirby Smart also just on the leadership of this football team.
Yeah, we identify with team leaders and we have groups within our team that are leadership and I don't divulge what I do individually with players or with a group, but that's something that we've always employed. We can't develop leadership at the top if you don't start with kids when they enter. And that's part of our school session process. That's part of our leadership training we do and where we take guys in the summer and
We definitely started that, and that's very important. We think it's key to our success, which is mindset over muscle. I wouldn't think that that would be an issue with this team at all, Greg, based on the veterans that are coming back, some of the positions that they have guys returning. It just doesn't really feel like leadership would be something that a lot of people would question with this group. No, I don't think leadership would be something that I'd be worried about. I think they'll be fine there. They have some tone setters on both sides of the ball. I think they lost some players.
uh really quality leaders off last year's team like Cedric Van Praam for example like yeah that that's going to be a loss as far as leadership is concerned but they have a good they have a I think a bunch of bunch of guys that have played a lot of football that people be looking up to on the raw on the roster and in the locker room so uh that wouldn't concern me if I were if I were Kirby Smart.
All right, so when we think about this Georgia team heading into fall practice, what do we wonder about? What do we worry about? Is there anything that we feel like we're going to get answered that we need answers to just over the course of fall practice? It's a lot of people's number one team in the nation. A lot of teams, a lot of folks pick to win the SEC. But if there are things that we want to try to learn, need to try to learn, GMAC, what would that be about Georgia? I mean, my biggest question mark remains what it was last year.
I mean, really all offseason, nothing for me has changed with Georgia. Like, I love them. I think they're a great team, but I need to know that they're better against the run. It's pretty simple. And statistically speaking, if you look at Georgia and what they've been historically, one, they've had a lead against a lot of teams, so it's become a throw-a-thon. Yet their secondary numbers and their past defense numbers are outstanding. Yeah.
But they gave up 114 yards rushing a game. That was 20th in the sport. They gave up nearly four yards a carry. That was 37th in the sport. They only had a negative play on 8% of the rushing attempts against them. That was 66th in the sport. We're talking about Georgia here, and everyone wants to talk about their defensive line and all this stuff. That's great. I get it. But Georgia, when I see Georgia rush defense, I'm used to seeing...
73 yards a game, not 115. So I hope that they've addressed those areas because there's going to be teams that are going to try to exploit them on the ground this year. And because of where they were, I'm not going to say inept, where they were human last year. So I think they're going to have to try to sure up that part of the team on defense in the front seven.
Well, it's interesting you say teams are going to try them there because the biggest difficulty that they face this year may be the teams who can run the ball and sort of – I mean, it's not really unconventional anymore, but I'll state it that way. Basically, the teams that will spread you out and then be able to run the football. Obviously, Alabama is going to be able to do that, and elite mobility, a quarterback is going to be able to help. Auburn is going to want to do that. Texas, to an extent, can do that. They can sort of get in and out of that.
Ole Miss is going to do that as well. Tennessee is a team that's going to try to do that. So the problem is some of those teams just have not been able to win the numbers game, specifically Tennessee, Ole Miss last year, when they tried to do that against Georgia groups. And if it's not better than it was a year ago, they'll have more advantages being able to do that. So that could be the issue because I think a lot of times when you hear people say, well, people are going to try to run it on Georgia, you say, well, who can out-muscle them?
Well, not many teams on the schedule are going to be able to do that, whether it's an elite Georgia D-line or a B-minus Georgia D-line. Still not going to be able to do that. But these teams are going to try to do it in a different way. And that could become a headache for this team down the road. Look at the schedule. I mean, just look at the schedule. We'll just start at the top. Clemson, Phil Moffa, and I'm not saying their offensive lines, you know, a bunch of war daddies, but they're going to try to run the football. You know what I agree with that? Spread you out.
Tennessee, you know, TCU, Garrett Riley system to spread you out, get numbers, and try to gas you. Yeah. And fill them off as a hammer at running back. Kentucky, are they going to try to pound you? Yep. Alabama, are they going to try to pound you? Probably. Auburn, are they going to try to pound you? They're going to be run first, yes. Texas, are they going to try to pound you? Yes. Florida, are they going to try to pound you? They're going to run the ball. All right. At Ole Miss, are they going to try to run it?
Yeah, they're still running first, no matter what people think about them. Same with Tennessee. Tennessee? Same thing. Tennessee is similar, right? Georgia Tech? Georgia Tech, yeah, they will probably try to run it too with some quarterback mobility. So we've literally listed off every team on their schedule, not named UMass, not named Mississippi State, and not named Tennessee Tech. Everyone else could try to pound it.
So they better be better in that part of their defense. And I think Georgia fans will get mad, like, oh, well, you know, we were great last year. No, you weren't, by your standards. Top 20 for Georgia is not good. Top 3 for Georgia is good. Top 20 for everybody else in the sport is great. Not for Georgia. So I think the expectation level is different in their front seven defensively, and it should be. I mean, it's a team that's won two of the last three national championships.
Tweeting into the show, and Jen, at Treywick Brian, he tweets, at Mac and Cube, where does sugarcoat Georgia's leadership problems? Quote, not worried about their leadership. Their problems off the field are reflective of poor leadership on the field. Poor mindset. Georgia has problems. We were the ones pouring the sugar on it, like we were Def Leppard? I'm not worried about Georgia's leadership, but I talk more in football references. I had no control of what my teammates did when they went home.
No. I had no control of one of my teammates trafficking cocaine and getting caught for it. That was not – I didn't have conversations about it. I didn't tell him not to. I didn't say, hey, please don't do that this weekend. That had nothing to do with me or anybody else on my team. He was going to do that either way. So just the reality of it. Yeah, guys do dumb things when they leave the facility. When they're in the facility, I'm not worried about their leadership. I mean there's only so much you can do as a teammate. Yeah.
What are you going to do, physically take someone's keys from them? What do you do? Are you suggesting that Cedric Van Praat isn't a good leader because his teammates, a handful of his teammates have had moving violations? I'm not going to make that assessment. I've been in a locker room. I know how it works. So, no, I don't see it that way. I think that Georgia still, the accountability, go watch them practice.
I'm not saying that you need to go and have access to the whole practice, but go watch the clips in their videos and tell me how physical their practices are, how hard they practice. That, to me, is reflective of football leadership. Do you not agree? 100%. I think there are multiple ways to look at it, and I think because of what college football is becoming and has become, we're getting further away from...
The whole like, hey, everybody sort of orchestrates under the same umbrella because of our leadership and our culture. It's just it's it's it's almost not real to have it that way anymore. You got guys that you have rent a players for a season. You have guys that don't go to a single class when they when they go play football somewhere. I mean, it's just it's just that's what it is. When I say don't go to a class, I mean, they take all their classes online. I talked to a player at Media Days that said he has not been to a class in person at his university.
I mean, I just it's very different now. So to think that you just have like to kill spikes and Damian Craig and the guys who are the best leaders on my team able to just sort of force everyone to operate under those umbrellas. I think it's becoming less and less real.
My reference to leadership with Georgia was, do they have veterans that know how to handle themselves once the game gets there? Are they going to be able to understand what every pressure is? Are they going to be able to pick that up? Are they going to quit in the fourth quarter? They have guys that understand how important ball security is. Do you know football situations and how to manage yourself and handle yourself in those? Are you going to be able to bring physicality on a regular basis, intensity on a regular basis, every day in practice, every game? That's...

Well, Polar Bear Service is the one-stop shop. They'll take great care of you. I call them for pretty much everything. Wes and the guys come to the house. They've helped me with my plumbing. They've helped me with my electrical. But they really specialize in the HVAC system. They're an independent train dealer, but they can work on all sorts of different things for you. System tune-up, duct cleaning, repair, new installations, those reliable train units.
It's amazing just how many ways they can help you around your house. So remember, if you have a problem with your electrical, plumbing, heater, air, just pick up the phone and call the Bear. It's 205-497-BEAR. That's 497-BEAR. Okay.
Also chiming back in before we go to Rusty on the phones, Jolly tweets in at Mac and Cube, that view in regards to Georgia and the issues off the field is pretty insightful. I worked under good leadership, and people did dumb stuff off the clock. Nothing the leadership could do. It was dealt with and not in a manner I knew about or should have known about. Brian Trawick tweets back in, true leadership doesn't force anything. It inspires others to follow. Outside influences affect how you play ball at Mac and Cube.
Okay. Rusty Mansell will join us now on the Buyer's Right Hotline. Some folks kind of talking about with us, Rusty, the leadership on this team, culture of this team. Is that a concern for you at all?
Not at all. I know a lot of those guys, covered a lot of those guys. Tate Ratledge, specifically one of the guys in the locker room, Malachi Starks, one of the guys on the defensive side of the ball, you know, three-year starter, very high academic young man, high character kid. I've covered out of Jefferson High School, likely to be a top 20 draft pick. So you bring back Carson Beck and those types of things, there's a million questions going on. I think Kirby Smart yesterday addressed that pretty quick with Rod Rod Thomas.
And, yeah, there's off-the-field stuff that is documented. And I think when Kirby said that at the SEC Media Days about finding players, it kind of shocked me. I never thought that side of it. I did some digging. And, listen, now, this isn't your, you know, to not have a better term, this isn't a mom-and-pop type taking your allowance away. This is some NIL stuff.
big time fines. Like they've laid it down. If you get a ticket, like you, it is a very costly deal to these players. So, you know, there's different angles, different ways to do this, but you know, in particular, you know, two or three weeks ago, you know, a player got a ticket on an afternoon where they had someone in to talk to the team that day, specifically that day.
So it's not like they're not trying different things, but the NIL deal now, Cole, you know this and Greg, you know, this too, as a 20, 21 year old young man, you get a lot of corn in your pocket and somebody takes it away from, from doing something like that. And it should get your attention.
Yeah, there's only one way to get their attention nowadays because, I mean, you start to say, hey, you're not playing, you're not doing this, you're not doing that. All right, coach, I'm in the portal. It's just hard to change behavior nowadays, and coaches have been saying that now for weeks, and people are blaming Kirby Smart and all these things. I don't know what else Kirby can do. I mean, unless he sets up personal drivers for all their guys, there's just nothing that can be done as far as the field is concerned.
I feel like we are, for whatever reason, overlooking something about Georgia's team last year that was pretty dang human. We keep acting like their front seven is one of the best in the sport. It still is. It just wasn't the best in the sport. It's still an elite possible team, a team with a super high ceiling, but that group really wasn't very good last year by Georgia's standards. So how do they get that addressed this fall camp? Greg, that's a great point, man. I go around and speak to all these places and speak to these Georgia Bulldogs fans and listen –
Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Trayvon Walker, all those guys, that's never going to happen again. That's never going to happen again, ever.
That was a once-in-a-lifetime type run. It doesn't mean that Georgia doesn't have damn good players. Desir Stackhouse, really good player. He's not a first-round draft pick. Warren Brinson, really good player. He's not a first-round draft pick. What you saw in 21, 20, 21 and 22 from Georgia was one of the most incredible runs you'll ever see on about Devontae White. Like six or seven defensive linemen, they were all there together. It's like having Derrick Brown like four of them. And they
and they had them all at one time. It doesn't mean they're not going to be a really good unit, a group. I think they had to have more depth. You saw the second half, the Alabama game, always watch Cole's breakdowns, always watch what he does film-wise. And you see what happened to Nazeer Stackhouse when he went from playing about 28 snaps a game to 44 snaps. Those 16 additional snaps, he was done.
And Alabama was moving him, especially in the middle. So you've got to have some increased depth there. I don't want to say that poor, pitiful me with Georgia's front, but
But to say they're going to have Devontae White, Jordan Davis, and all those guys, Jalen Carter, that's not happening right now. Rusty Mansell joining us on the Buyers Right Hotline talking Georgia Bulldogs. Who around them can maybe offset a little bit of that? It feels like the linebacker group could be great. You brought up Malachi Starks. You lose a couple guys on defense, specifically on the back end. I know Tykee Smith really stepped it up last year. Bullard was great last year. But what other part of the defense can maybe offset that front if it's not as dominant as we've seen prior?
I think the most underrated player at Georgia is Jalen Walker. And I've talked to quite a bit of NFL people. They absolutely loved this guy. They loved his versatility. I think you're going to see him be more of an impact player this year. Damon Wilson was a five-star. It was a huge recruiting battle between Ohio State and Georgia all the way to the end. This young man is around 245 pounds. I think Georgia has tried to manufacture pressure.
They've tried to do that because they haven't had a Nolan Smith or one of those guys right now. But I do think this year on the edge, not just to set up the edge. Like, Chaz Chandler's a really good player, but he's not going to beat an SEC tackle off the edge. Now, he's tough at the point of attack.
against the run and a pulling guard, but you're not going to get a lot of pressures out of him. So they had to bring it from different places. I think this year, athletically, having Mikel Williams stand up a lot more, they're going to have Damon Wilson in the game, and I think Jalen Walker. I think Jalen Walker, who really played a really good game against Alabama, he had some really good tape in that game, and I think that's what got NFL scouts really happy about him
seeing the amount of pressures he had in that game. So I think they're going to be a little, they'll attack you a little bit different. I do think the front's going to be a little bit deeper. Again, it's not going to be for NFL first round draft picks. It doesn't mean they can't be good as a unit, but I think you're going to see Georgia with the ability to win some one-on-ones on the edge. I think Damon Wilson's a guy that people need to know around the country.
Georgia, I know that they're most people's number one team in the country. If they're not one, they're two. Some people might lean a little Ohio State, but we're splitting hairs a little bit when evaluating both. Are there maybe more question marks on this team than people are paying attention to right now? I feel like people are just feeling, all right, Georgia's the best team, put them in. I'm not saying they're not, or they can't be. I feel like we're overlooking some possible problems
Liabilities, just on their roster.
I think it's more wide open. I think everybody has questions. You look at Ohio State, what are we going to get out of them at quarterback? I know because everything else around them is damn good. They had some great additions and I think everybody has some questions. I think when you look at Georgia, I think people look at Georgia from the outside of the circle and know they're a safe bet. You know what type of product you're going to get out of Georgia. You're going to be consistent. People ask me all the time, hey, can Georgia win the national championship? I say, I don't know, but I
I know that Georgia has a chance to win every single game they play. They have a chance to win 16 games. I don't know if they're going to win game 16, but they're going to be in that. That's a safe pick to be in the running, but they do have questions. You start talking about, you know, what can Carson Beck do? He's played on the road. He's played some big games. He's going to Alabama at night. He's going to Ole Miss most likely at night. They're going to Texas for the first time. So there's some –
There's still some questions there with how he's going to play in some of these games. So I do think there's some questions around Georgia, but I do think there's questions around everybody. That's what makes me so excited about this football season. I don't think there's that one dominant alpha team that you go, they're going to be there in that last game. You start making these playoffs and additional games, it's going to be a hell of a football season to watch. I do think Georgia has some questions. You want to know what they're going to do at defensive back? I think Kamari Lassiter was one of the most underrated defensive
corners in the country last year. He wouldn't give up nothing. He gave up nothing. And when they went one-on-one with him in Missouri in that game, and some of them just shutting down receivers, I was like, this dude's for real. And you see the early news out of the Texans. I saw that last night, and they're talking about Kamari Lassiter. I knew that. Kamari Lassiter would shut down your number one receiver and wouldn't allow anything. So they got to replace him. They got to replace Bullard, who was
tough in the box, could play against the run, cover all those types of things. So yes, they do have some questions, but they have a lot of really good players. I think Georgia guys, one of the biggest things for Georgia is they got to stay healthy. I mean,
I mean, when you look at that Alabama game last year, when I watched Brock Bowers come out of the locker room, I had no idea how he even played. Like, I had no idea. He couldn't even really walk after that game. So, you know, you want to play games, you want to play big games like that and beat teams like that, you've got to have everybody together. And last year they really had some key injuries, and they just didn't have quite enough depth in there. So, yeah, Georgia's got questions. I think Georgia is the safe bet to say they're going to get there. But as far as saying Georgia's clear number one, I wouldn't say that.
Rusty Mansell, publisher of Dogs HQ, a product of the On3 Sports Network. Find him on Twitter at Rusty Mansell underscore. You said something a little bit earlier that caught my attention. I've covered these guys. You've been around them. So you've been around some of the younger players a lot more than what we have seen or heard about. There are a couple of youngsters that haven't really gotten significant snaps yet that I know people are really excited about.
Like a Jaden Reddle at tight end. I think when you look at that linebacker group, we haven't seen a lot of Raylan Wilson yet. Maybe a Damon Wilson has some of these guys that have made some noise inside sort of the circles in Athens, but not all over college football. Give us a youngster or two that you think has a chance to blow up for this Georgia football team this year.
all the years i've known kirby smart all the years i followed him in alabama all the years i've covered him at georgia i've never seen him in a press conference as early as sec media days missing someone like kj bolden kj bowen's a kid i covered from his ninth grade on at buford he's a 10 500 meter six foot two hundred and 185 190 pounds safety some people thought he could have been a wide receiver a huge recruiting battle flips from florida state to georgia lake and from
and for Kirby Smart to say something about him at a press conference and then again yesterday say something like, hey, we don't think we're going to throw too much at him after seeing him this spring. Malachi Stark started game one for George as a true freshman. K.J. Bolden, he might not start against Clemson, but by the time they go to Tuscaloosa, this guy may wind up playing meaningful minutes. I think Raylon Wilson's a linebacker that battled a little bit of injuries last year, but I think his ceiling is unbreakable.
unlimited. I know C.J. Allen. I've covered him from Lamar County High School. Great kid. Played a lot. He was a freshman All-American. It would not shock me at the end of the day to see Rylan Wilson a better NFL prospect than C.J. Allen. Both
Both of them are damn good players. I'm telling you, Raylan Wilson, I know a lot of people, he got picked on that wheel route against Alabama, and they did right going right out of freshman on the first play of the game in that red zone. But when you look at Raylan Wilson and what he brings to the table, he could be the next great Georgia linebacker. Damon Wilson is someone else. Again, I mentioned him earlier, former five-star edge guy. I really, really like him. I'll say this, the Georgia beat guys yesterday got 15 minutes.
And you can go read any one you want. And every one of them was talking about Nate Frazier. I had seen Nate Frazier. That was the first time that Georgia beat had seen him. He was the number one running back in the country out of modern-day high school in California, 5'10", 205 pounds last year, five-star. Georgia goes to California, gets him. Yesterday was his first padded practice in Athens. I think the Georgia beat, including my guy, Jake Rowe. He called me. He goes, oh, my God, Rusty, I had no idea. I was like, well, Jake, he was ranked number one running back in the country for a reason.
Twitchy reminds a lot of people of him and DeAndre Swift. High praise there. Yeah. I remember doing that. He's number one. I mean, he's number one. He's number one running back in the country for a reason. So, you know, I'm not inventing a wheel right here, but it was the first time those guys had got a chance to see him yesterday. So there's a lot of buzz about that true freshman as well.
I remember doing the Georgia-Georgia Tech game that year that DeAndre Swift was a freshman, and Kirby looked at me before the game and goes, that guy is our best player. I go, Coach, he's a freshman. He gets like four touches a game. What are you talking about? I go, I'm telling you, that guy's the best player on the team. I go, all right. And sure enough, he turned out to be right. Last question, just kind of looking at how things set up in the Clemson game. Clemson,
I think it's a big one. I think Clemson's going to come to play. Their reputation as a perennial contender is on the line. If they go and get smoked in week one on national television again like last year, then it's bad news bears for how they're going to be perceived. Knowing you're going to get a team's best shot, how will Georgia prepare for that game?
Well, you've got to say you like Georgia's battle-tested. I mean, they've been to Knoxville. They've been to Auburn. You know, these guys, Carson Beck and all these players, they've been on the road and played in these big games. They've played in playoff games. They've played in SEC championships. Here's the thing, man. I say this a lot. Georgia needs to win games in Mercedes-Benz. I mean, they beat Oregon in there, and they beat Ohio State, but
Alabama game in there and some of those games in Mercedes-Benz, I don't know their record in there, but it's not great. That's a big game for them, too. It's a huge game for the ACC, Greg. I think you agree with that. That is an absolute monster game. Then you followed up with Miami and Florida. That is two huge ACC-SEC matchups. I know Clemson's sitting there, and they look at themselves, and they're a 13.5, 14.1 underdog, pins on wherever you go. There's a lot of pride in that program, and I do think
you're 100% spot on. I think they understand coming in that game, K. Klubnick, this is a huge game for him perception-wise, where he is as a quarterback, Dabo Sweeney, what he's done with his program, he's kind of refused to do the portal thing. He says we can build, recruit within, and develop our own players. So,
It's a huge game for Clemson. I know it's a huge game for Georgia, but I agree, man. If they were to go in there and get beat, say, 31-13, something like that, 31-14, I don't know where it goes for Clemson after that. So I do think they're going to walk in there and they're going to throw hate makers. You might see trick plays, Rob. They're not going to leave anything in the bag. I think Dabo Swinney understands the scope of this game, even though it is game one.
It's a huge game for Clemson, and it's a huge game for the ACC. Rusty, great stuff, man. Really do appreciate the time. Appreciate your insight. We'll definitely have you back again soon. Thanks, guys. Thank you. Rusty Mansell, Dogs HQ. Find him on Twitter at RustyMansell underscore. Talking a lot about this Georgia football team, that their fall camp is now underway as well. Before we go to break, G-Mac, and we'll talk a little bit Texas A&M, some other schools around the SEC, what's happening with practice there. Tell our listeners about B-Dry.
Well, B-Dry has been serving Alabama and homeowners here across Birmingham for 60 years. They continue to back up their performance with that life of the structure warranty. So if you had your basement or crawl space worked on and waterproofed in 1965, guess what?
Or excuse me, yeah, 1965, it's still covered. And they'll still come out and work on it. All right, when we come back, we will discuss a couple of other SEC teams and some news and notes from around their fall camps next right here on McElroy and Kubelik in the morning. The capital of the sports talk nation.
This is jocks94.5 and jocksfm.com. Hurry and... All right, welcome back in. McElroy and Kublik in the morning, Friday, August 2nd, right here on jocks94.5. 9.35 a.m., listen online, jocksfm.com. If you missed Rusty Mansell, Charlie Potter, Zach Barry, talking Georgia, Bama, Ole Miss, you can get all those at the podcast.com.
jocksfm.com, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, wherever you get yours. Texas A&M getting going on the practice field last night, and Mike Elko discussing how he plans on building a winning football team there in College Station. What we're trying to do in camp is establish...
what we believe winning football looks like. We talk a lot about playing consistent winning football, and that to me is not focused on the result. It's not focused on, okay, because in camp sometimes you can get jaded, right? You can get a sack because the offense misses an assignment, right, which isn't really winning football. You can...
throw a pass complete, make an explosive play because the defense busts the coverage, which isn't exactly winning football. And so we have these internal formulas for what winning football looks like in practice. And I think we're trying to hit those marks day in, day out consistently. And I think that's what you're trying to build. Greg, I've had a lot of people ask me about A&M and what to expect and
One thing that I've said that I think will be very different, a couple of things, but they're very simple, and that is I just think the organization of the team will be better. I think when you're talking about not busting coverages, being aligned in the right places, when you're talking about the presentation of the offense, the things that they offer you before the football is snapped,
Because I didn't watch A&M the last few years and be like, man, that effort was poor. Those guys just didn't care. It just, the organization of it seemed to be flawed at times. That's the part that I think, I guess to really sum it up, like ground level, what I think will be better is just, it'll be a more responsible brand of football, if that makes sense. I think that's what we'll get from Coach Elko this year.
I also think you can anticipate some legitimate creativity offensively. Like, Colin Klein's a meat and potatoes guy. Their offensive coordinator, I thought, was one of the best hires of the offseason. And no one talks about it. It's amazing to me that two of the best coordinators in the country changed places, and nobody seems to care. It's Mike Denbrock going to Notre Dame and Colin Klein going to Texas A&M. Like, those two guys moving, and it's like...
Second page news. And I think they're going to be more structured. They're going to be more organized. They're going to play with great effort. Like A&M's played with great effort. I agree with you. It's just there were many times, many times which guys were out of position or they have a bust. I mean, and they have good personnel, but they've also fallen victim to having an injured quarterback.
How often have they played 12 games in the last five to eight years? How often have they played 12 games with one starting quarterback? I mean, Kellen Mond, I believe, in 2020 is about the only one I can think of off the top of my head. So they get beat up a lot, and that's going to be a huge problem for anybody if they lose their starter.
So that's Texas A&M. Still a lot of question marks, but we know a lot of talent as well. You continue kind of going around the league. I'm hearing a little bit of buzz from Austin, Texas, on guys like Silas Bolden and Bill Norton, Arizona defensive linemen, Oregon State slot wide receiver. Just haven't seen them in Texas uniforms yet, Greg, but maybe some other people starting to realize just how good of a get those might be for this Texas football team when they take the field in a couple weeks.
I think they're going to be solid up front. The more I think about it, the more I think they're going to actually be a team that's a little bit more twitchy off the edge. Like last year, I thought so much attention was paid to the guys on the interior that the edge guys were often overlooked. But if you look at their edge guys, they're pretty good. Ethan Burke can give you a little something. Baron Sorrell, I think, is really underrated.
And I'm not saying he's a top-ten pick, but I think he's really underrated. I think the Tremor addition from UT San Antonio, I really like how he bends and can get off the ball. He's got some juice. So I think they're just going to be a team that has now – they're going to be solid in the middle, but they're real – they're going to create issues on the edges, more so than maybe they have in the last couple seasons. All right, so also Tennessee –
Brew McCoy, a topic of conversation. And it got me kind of wondering because the expectations are coming back there with him. How much do they need him? How much do they have to have Brew McCoy this year? Because when he was healthy, we saw what he was last year. But is he somebody that Tennessee sort of has to have this fall? I think he's a very important piece for a young quarterback. I mean, you have a young quarterback in there. Brew McCoy, not the most...
crazy, juice, freakishly fast, explosive, but man, he's solid. You know what I mean? He's just solid. Big body, big catch radius, rock solid receiver. I don't think Brew McCoy is going to be a guy that can take over the game. We saw a couple years ago against Alabama with, what's his face? Jalen Hyatt. Jalen Hyatt. I don't think he's that type of guy, but he's going to get you...
I mean, he can be a 700, 800 yard receiver for you. I think you get to a thousand, but he's going to be more of your possession guy and a big body. That's going to be crucial on third down crucial and get back on track situation. So I think it's very important to have him available. Um, you think too, just the other receivers you're going to have there. Uh,
what if Dante Thornton is close to what everyone thought he was going to be last year? You've got Chris Brazel coming in for Tulane. That's my problem. Why wasn't he... Here we are getting hyped up about him again this year. I'm falling victim to it also. If he's...
If he reaches expectations, why didn't he do it last year? I was told health was a problem last year. Just kind of never got going. But again, we heard that two years ago with Brew McCoy, and then it did happen the next year. So I don't... Right. We'll see. But you've got Brazel. You've got Squirrel White. You've got some other players. I mean, even a Chaz Nimrod could probably help you in the slot a little bit. It doesn't feel like that Brew McCoy is a must-have, but...
Definitely be nice to have. And then what if Brew McCoy and Dante Thornton hit? Then all of a sudden you're talking about a totally different deal there. Kentucky offensive lineman Paul Rodriguez medically retires. I don't think it's a massive hit, but those numbers at that position, not something that you want to begin to dwindle right as you're heading into fall camp. The Arkansas defense versatility, what I'm hearing coming out of that group early on, specifically on defense versatility.
Larry Worth, Jacksonville State linebacker playing a little bit of nickel, doing some different things. I think that linebacker group is going to be interesting to watch for Arkansas because they have so many numbers. That's why I think they're going to play a lot more three down this year and try to use some of that versatility to generate a little more pass rush. Landon Jackson can handle being bumped down inside a little bit in the three-man front, which you can hear coming up next after our show right here on Jocks. But
I'm anxious to see kind of who's lining up where and what they're doing with this Arkansas front because that linebacker depth, I think, is going to be a lot better than people believe, G-Mac. Well, I think that
I think Arkansas is one of the biggest unknowns. I mean, it's good that you feel great about their depth there. That's awesome. I still don't know. I don't know what to make of them, if I'm going to be completely honest. I don't know what to make of their secondary, a position that's been a sore spot for a while. They've been super thin in the past, so I'm really optimistic that hopefully they can be a little bit better because it can't get much worse as far as how thin they've been in recent years. So,
hopeful that that group collectively can take a step, but I just don't know. I really don't. I do think offensively they'll take some of the pressure off their defense with how they're going to run it and how they're going to shrink the game, but...
I don't know, man. I think it's really tough to assess exactly how Arkansas lands this year. All right, so we'll get you a break, come back, give you a bad box score two of the day, give you our super sofa game of the weekends. All next right here on Jocks 94.5. Catch up with all things McElroy and Kubrick in the morning by subscribing to the podcast. Mythically, he's grown. He's almost like a little bit bigger than...

McIlroy and Kubelik in the morning, 947 a.m. Friday, August 2nd, right here on Jocks 94.5. Let's get to our bad box scores of the day. Personal file, 69. Offense, he was giving them the business. Potential rounding, offense number seven.
Back to the Olympics.
I feel like women's hoops almost got there, 87-74 over Belgium. They have won 57 straight games in the Olympics. But we'll go to a different style basketball. Don't go men. You're not going men's soccer, are you? Nope. Basketball. Because we're down 3-0 right now, getting absolutely pummeled in the quarters. You sad? That's a beatdown. No, because it's still time to come back. Rally time. Three-on-three basketball. Okay. Okay.
Yesterday, Latvia knocked off China 22-8. I don't know what is a lot of points or a few points, but I feel like eight points is a lot of points. Here's what China did from the floor. They shot three of eight on ones, two of 12 on twos, and one of two from the free throw line. So they shot the ball 22 times and made six.
So I don't know what's really good and bad and different from a scoring perspective in three-on-three basketball, but I know when you shoot 22 times and you make six of them, you qualify for a bad box score of the day. You got blown out. And you're an Olympian. I think you could make six of 22, maybe. No, I could make six of 22. Not even close. It's not even debatable. So let's leave the Olympics and go to Canada, where the BC...
Reign. Lions. Lions. Lions. Oh. Went down to the Winnipeg Jets. Blue Bombers. Wrong sport, Saber. They are the Blue Bombers. You said Canada. What am I supposed to assume? 25-0. Curling would have been appropriate. Was your final score. So 25-0 not always considered bad box score of the day, but you have to dig a little bit deeper to find out exactly why. And here's why.
BC ran 36 plays for 102 yards. Not rushing, not passing. Total. For the game. Okay. For the game. That's three. That's solid. Three-ish. The whole game? They combined to go 9 of 20 passing for 86 yards, no touchdown and interception. They ran the ball 11 times for 43 yards. That's just a stifling defense. It's almost four. That's not bad.
Collectively, they ran 36 plays for 102 yards. Okay, that's bad. Yeah, it's bad. Your first down differential, 24 for Winnipeg, 4 for the BC Lions. Winnipeg, they're dialed in. So, yes, Winnipeg and BC qualifies as a bad box score of the day. Not the biggest blowout, but when you start looking there at exactly how things happen,
No trips to the red zone, by the way, for the BC Lions. No red zone penetrations. Did not make it. Didn't even get there. No Scott Hansen for him. All right, let's get to our Super Sofa Game of the Week. It's brought to you by TD's Fine Furniture in Summerton. What we do is each and every week we find one game.
that you would watch over any other. The one game that you would pick to view this weekend. Greg McElroy, what is your TD's Fine Furniture Super Sofa Game of the Week? Oh, you absolutely love it. It was going to be Morocco-United States, but we're down three zip in the 86th minute, so that's out. Really difficult. So for me, it's actually quite simple. I'm going with the Olympic Games...
championship golf event you have xander shafley who has already won one gold scotty scheffler the best player in the world by a mile trying to chase his olympic dream of cashing in on gold it will get underway this weekend the men's golf event in the olympics la nascita de paris okay yay saber
Super Super Game of the Week. I will keep the patriotic streak going. Sunday, 8 a.m. on Peacock or NBC or however you choose to consume it, or maybe 6 o'clock that night if you want to stay spoiler-free. You're going to get the apparati, I guess is the plural of apparatus.
For the men's and women's in gymnastics. So your uneven bars, your vaults, all the ones that give out the individual medals for that, that's on Sunday at 8 a.m. So I'm assuming that Suni Lee and Simone Biles and a couple other Americans will come and take at least seven. So I can't wait to see that. Okay. Damien? Well, since the men's three-on-three –
Championship team. It's 3x3. You're right, 3x3. Since they're not really holding the mantle, I've got to go 5-on-5 basketball as the United States are taking on Puerto Rico.
Tomorrow morning at 10.15 on, as John said, Peacock, NBC, wherever you watch your Olympic coverage at 10.15, USA Men's National Team in basketball will be taking on Puerto Rico. That's my TV's Super Sofa Game of the Weekend.
Puerto Rico doesn't have any – there's nothing that's semi-scary about that game, is there? I don't – Nah. I guess probably if Davis or Embiid find a way to get injured like they typically do. I don't think the team presents anything scary. Now, Embiid can't get injured on the bench. What's wrong with you? He can't get injured on the bench. Haters. Can't clap too hard. I'm going to give you some Friday Night Football CFL action tonight, 6.30 p.m. Montreal at Hamilton. Let's go.
Don't know where you can find it. You can stream it at CFL.com. Maybe if you have TSN somewhere, you can find a way to get that there also. Internet, probably your best bet, but there is live tackle football on your television tonight, 6.30 p.m. CFL action. Also, just...
Icing on the cake tomorrow. Edmonton at Saskatchewan, 6 o'clock. Sunday, Toronto at Calgary, 6 o'clock. Double icing. Okay. Lots of icing on the football cake. That is your TD's Super Sofa Game of the Week. TD's Fine Furniture in Summits and over two football fields of inventory. If you can hear this ad, they will deliver to you.
And you can go check out TD's Fine Furniture for all your furniture needs. Tell them you heard about them right here on McElroy and Kublik in the morning. All right, Olympics this weekend. We're going to wrap up some more gold medals. We'll have updates from fall camp on Monday. A couple teams are going to get into pads this weekend, GMAC, but I don't probably have to get into middle of next week where we really start to figure out a little bit about these teams that we need to know moving forward.
Correct. And, you know, I mean, we are in the midst of a three-week acclimation period. You know, it's like you've got to go shorts and shoulders for 17 days before you can put full pads on. But, yeah, next week is when...
