While studying at the San Pedro Spanish School, my friend Sonja and I interviewed a family practice doctor from San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala. In this episode, we talk to Dr. Francisco Méndez about the timing of prenatal care visits and high-risk pregnancy in Spanish.

¿Entonces aquí en San Pedro es común que las mujeres reciban cuidados previos a quedar embarazada?

Dr Mendez

No. No. Usualmente las mujeres embarazadas asisten a su control prenatal, la mayoría, hasta el segundo trimestre de su embarazo. ¿Verdad? Algunas pocas durante el primer trimestre cuando tienen su primer retraso menstrual, pero es probablemente un número muy muy mínimo de mujeres que asisten antes del embarazo. Eso no es como, como muy común aquí en estas comunidades.

Molly

Perfecto. Y… ¿Con qué freciuencia atiende a una mujer embarazada durante su embarazo?

Dr. Mendez

Nosotros acá hacemos una cita para embarazos normales aproximadamente cada 8 semanas. Ahora para embarazos de alto riesgo lo hacemos cada cuatro semanas.

Molly

¿Y qué se considera un embarazo de alto riesgo?

Dr. Mendez

Un embarazo de alto riesgo… uno de los principales que miramos acá nosotros son embarazos en adolescentes. ¿Verdad? …niñas de 14, 15 años y 16 años que están embarazadas. Entonces, tratamos de darles un seguimiento más cercano. Algunos con antecedentes de problemas en embarazos anteriores, como los más comunes: hipertensión, sangrados y algunas veces infecciones. ¿Verdad? Esos son los que más comúnmente miramos.

Molly

¿Hay algunos casos de embarazos de alto riesgo que no puede* atender aquí, (o) que necesite(n) ir a otro lado? ¿O trata de atender a todas las mujeres?

*Error – I should have said, “PUEDA” because I don’t know if these types of cases exist or not.

Dr. Mendez

Nosotros atendemos a todas las mujeres pero si una gran parte de los embarazos de alto riesgo los referimos al hospital…al hospital nacional.

Molly

¿En Guatemala, en la….?

Dr. Mendez

En Sololá. Es el más cercano que tenemos: el hospital nacional de Sololá.

¿Hay algunos casos de embarazos de alto riesgo que necesiten ir a otro lado?
Are there any cases that need to go somewhere else here?
