Chinese health experts say rates of hospitalization【住院治疗】, severe illness or fatality from a weaker Omicron variant have reduced significantly. Zhang Yue tells us more.

权威医学专家表示，奥密克戎变异株重症率或致死率已大幅下降。记者张乐为您带来详细报道。

An expert said the pathogenesis【发病机理】 of the Omicron variant has weakened, compared to the original strain, as well as the Delta variant.

奥密克戎变异株及其进化分支的致病力和毒力，相比于原始株和德尔塔等变异株明显减弱。

“In the ongoing outbreak in China, mild and asymptomatic cases accounted for 90 percent of the total infections, and there were fewer moderate cases, showing pneumonia-like symptoms. I have been working at the frontline in Beijing’s designated hospital these days. The proportion of severe cases that require treatment in hospital or need respirators was even smaller.”

“从我们国内这段时期的患者情况来看，无症状与轻症患者的比例占90%；类似肺炎症状的普通型病例也都不多；由于我这段时间一直都在北京医疗一线，会到定点医院去查房会诊，发现真正是因为新冠肺炎导致的需要住院、需要插管上呼吸机的患者也就三四例。”

The expert also said the Omicron variant mainly affects the upper respiratory【呼吸的】 tract, causing mild symptoms like sore throat and coughing.

专家指出，奥密克戎变异株主要感染上呼吸道，引发喉咙痛、咳嗽等轻微症状。

“The pathogenesis of the infection in this wave is quite different from the original strain. The infected patients mainly show mild symptoms very similar to that of flu. Many symptoms are even milder than a severe case of flu.”

“我们发现这一波病例的核心病机和刚开始的毒株有明显不同，症状明显减轻了。现在这些症状看起来跟流感症状非常相似，而且很多症状比重症流感、偏重症的流感更轻。”

Experts say children and pregnant women are at higher risk of being infected by the Omicron variant. They suggest children showing symptoms like fever and cough need to see a doctor as soon as possible. Pregnant women will show similar symptoms after getting infected and can make a recovery in about seven days.

专家补充，儿童、孕产妇等特殊人群感染奥密克戎变异株的风险可能更高。专家建议，儿童出现持续高烧、频繁咳嗽等症状，要及时就诊，尤其3月龄的婴儿只要出现发烧症状，就应该就诊。而孕产妇感染奥密克戎的情况与普通人群相似，7天左右就能康复。

Kishida aims to boost the country’s defense budget to about 43 trillion yen from fiscal 2023 to fiscal 2027, an over 50 percent increase from its current five-year spending plan. The figure is up from around27.47 trillion yen that Japan had originally planned for five years through the fiscal year from April 2023.

岸田文雄表示，从2023年度到2027年度，日本防卫预算总额将提高到约43万亿日元，比目前的五年支出计划增加50%以上。这一数字远高于日本2019-2023年度约27.47万亿的防卫预算总额。

However, for a country with an aging and declining population already struggling with a bulging national debt, finding the funds for the increase is not easy.

The money is set to be used for items such as stockpiling missiles. Another goal over the next 10 years would be to triple the number of military units equipped with ballistic【弹道的】 missile interceptors in the southwestern island chain. Japan has steadily stepped up its international defense role and military spending over the past decade. It aims to double its military budget in the next 5 to 10 years to about 2% of GDP. Japan has long capped【限制】 its annual defense budget at around 1 percent of GDP, or more than 5 trillion yen, while holding an exclusively self-defense-oriented security policy position under its war-renouncing Constitution. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded at today’s (12.6) press conference that Japan’s increasing defense budget has led to serious doubts among its Asian neighbors about whether it will stick to its exclusively defense-oriented policy and the path of peaceful development. The spokesperson urged Japan to act prudently in the area of military security.

The EU and the U.S. held another MinisterialMeeting of the Trade and Technology Council yesterday(12.5) in College Park,Maryland.

欧盟和美国昨天（12.5）在马里兰州召开第三次部长级会议。

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after the meeting that this is a very positive, and productive way forward for both the European Union and the United States. French Finance Minister Bruno LeMaire said the EU needed its own equivalent of the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. The 430 billion-dollar inflation-cutting bill was passed in August, it includes a provision that offers consumers 7,500 dollars in tax credits for the purchase of new American-made EVs. The EU Trade Commissioner on Monday called the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act "discriminatory", and urged steps betaken before year’s end to modify the law.
