From the brains behind Brains On, this is the Moment of Um. Moment of Um comes to you from APM Studios. I'm Mark Sanchez. Three miles in the books. Not bad for someone who hasn't run in a few weeks. Let's just check the old pulse here.
Whoa, my heart is beating super fast. Cool, I must have been doing a really good job. I wonder how fast my heart is actually beating. Here, let me count. One, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Okay, I guess I don't have all the time in the world to count my heartbeats, but, you know, I'm still pretty proud of myself.
Hi, I'm Brooke from Overhill and I'm from Utah, Kansas. My question is, how many times does our heart beat a day? Hi, I'm Courtney Jordan-Beckler. I'm a cardiologist, which means I'm a heart doctor. I take care of mostly adult patients, but as adult cardiologists, we learn a little bit about kids' hearts too.
So how many times does our heart beat a day? So this really varies. I'm going to give you a little bit of background first. So children's heartbeats between ages one and two-year-olds, their heart beats about 80 to 130 beats per minute.
As we get older, when we get older, our hearts get a little bit slower. So when you're about three to four years old, your heart beats between 80 and 120 beats per minute. When you get to be about five to six,
75 to 115 beats per minute. Children that are about seven to nine, their heart beats between 70 to 110 beats per minute. And then after about 10, 11 or so, you get into this adult heart rate range, which means on average, our heart beats between 60 and 100 times per minute. So what we do to figure out how many times that is a day is we multiply that
per minute times 60 minutes per hour times 24 hours in a day. And that's where we get to for the average adult, their heart beats about 100,000 times a day. Can you believe that? 100,000 times a day is what your heart beats. 100,000 times a day? Whoa, really?
Okay, so if you're an adult whose heart beats 70 times per minute, then you multiply that by 60 minutes per hour, which is 4,200 times per hour, okay, and multiply that by 24 hours in the day, which is 100,800 beats per day. So for the average adult, we like to round that to about 100,000 times per day. Incredible. Math.
And you know what rhymes with math? Laugh. Which reminds me, did you know that our heart rate increases when we laugh? Yeah, so when you're laughing hard, you're taking these big, deep breaths, and that circulates more oxygen to your blood, and that can improve the way your body functions. So in the spirit of helping you stay healthy, I'll just try out my newest heart-themed comedy set. Walk with me into this club here.
Is this thing on? Thanks so much for coming out to Moment of Chuckles, the premier podcasting comedy club. Okay, okay. So what do you call someone you have a crush on that you met on Twitter? A tweet heart. You think that's good? Which is the most loving vegetable?
