And I know I've said before that knowledge is the most important thing.
But the reality is if you don't have the strength or actually the health to back that up or even to function as a human being physically, then your knowledge and your mental strength doesn't really even matter. When you're afraid of something, you have to master it. That's how you start to overcome it. So what I realized when I get to that point where I want to quit everybody, they get to the point where they want to quit. This is what happens. The mind tells you that
Let's go home. Let's take a warm shower. Let's get some food. This is not right. This is that. If you cannot answer the questions at that moment, because your mind's going to start giving you all these questions, all these questions. And if you can't answer them, you're going to quit. So that comes into play. And being big and strong is also totally useless if you're mentally weak and you quit.
Now, being mentally strong should actually lead you to being physically strong because if you are mentally strong, then you can work and train to become physically strong. If I didn't have the answer to respond to my mind and say why I'm here, why I'm doing this, you will always lose that fight. You have to have the response to what your mind is going to tell you. It is important.
In the area of motivating yourself, it's important to know why you're doing it. Because that mind will say, why bother? Why go through all this? This is too hard. No, throw in the towel. It's not worth it. But if you're mentally weak, then you will not hold the line on the good food and the good workouts and you won't get physically strong or healthy so fast.
Can you be weak and strong at the same time? Yes, but I say be strong. Train your physical strength and exercise your mental strength by doing the right things, the hard things, the things you know you're supposed to do. Do them and be as strong as you can mentally, physically, and emotionally for yourself and
for your team, for your family. Hold the line and be strong. Here's how you can handle that. Here's how you override that. Write down five reasons why you deserve it. Why do you deserve what you want? Why you? Why do you deserve it? What meaning and value will it bring to your life? What's so different about you that you deserve your goal or this goal? And when you write down those five reasons...
When you have some down moments and you're going to have them, when that conversation start talking to you and it's going to talk to you, what you will do is you can pull that out and read it and it will build you up. It will be your rod and your staff to comfort you through some challenging moments because you're going to have some. Life will knock you between the eyes. It will catch you on the blind side, come out of nowhere, stuff you can't anticipate. That will knock the wind out of you. You want to give up.
That's why it's important for you to work on yourself. Listening to tapes, building yourself up, talking to yourself with power, feeling and conviction, building yourself up day in and day out because it's coming. Life will send you some curves you cannot anticipate. Nothing fails like success. You're successful. Maybe it's in your health. Maybe it's in your finances. Maybe it's in your career. Maybe it's in your family life. Maybe it's in the way that you show up in the world. Awesome. You're in a really vulnerable place right now.
It is one thing to be successful. It is another thing to sustain success over the coming decades. Is that not a powerful idea? I mean, let's go to the entertainment industry. It's very hard to be a one-hit wonder. Let's not knock a one-hit wonder. But it's even harder to become an iconic rock band or hip-hop band. Let's go to the arts. It is very hard to come up with your Sistine Chapel. Got it.
it is even harder to become a Michelangelo.
So are you playing the short game or are you playing the long game? This is rule number two, you know, or lesson number two that life has taught me. Play the long game. Aim for legendary. Don't just say, I want to be world class in my dominant pursuit for a little window of time. Say, I want to have the guts and the grit and the acumen and the mindset and the capability and the commitment to success.
create enduring success and that's why I say nothing fails like success you look at the restaurant that is hot in your neighborhood right now they're on the path to obsolescence if they're not really careful sure they went from a little neighborhood shop that made beautiful pasta
that had great service, that had the owner on the floor, shaking your hand, getting to know your name. Then they got written up in the magazines and then they got interviewed and then word of mouth spread like wildfire and what happened? They became arrogant. You see, success can be so toxic and it happens, it is such a pull on every human being. It just plays with your mind and you literally shift from humility to arrogance.
You shift from humility to arrogance and once the arrogance sets in in a mindset, it starts to populate every other person on the team, every other person in the culture, every other person in the community. And it is a very short fall from success
to irrelevance. So lesson number two is nothing fails like success. As you become more successful, become more humble. As you become more successful, work even harder. As you become more successful, care even more about your product. As you become more successful, learn even more. I invite you, when you are the titan of your industry, be sitting in the room with 18 year olds beginning their game.
When you are the icon of your field, be the person who is up, not at five o'clock anymore, let's play at four o'clock, reading, listening to the podcast, writing in your journal, setting your goals, focusing on your intentions.
As you become more successful be more humble as you become more successful be even more punctual as you become more successful Become even more passionate as you become older become even younger Yesterday, I was walking on the street and I met this man in his 80s. He said Robin. I finally retired He's probably close to 90 and he is
a legendary clothier in the country that I live in and he just retired and he started his shop which is now an empire in 1954 so I don't know what that is but that is decades and decades and decades and decades and he did not want to retire he just retired but he is still on fire to do amazing things age is just a number do not let an old person into your body nothing fails like success I think it's garbage because at some point we all bought into this lie
that you gotta feel ready in order to change. We bought into this complete falsehood
that at some point you're going to have the courage, at some point you're going to have the confidence and it's total bullsh*t frankly. Are we allowed to swear on this show? Absolutely. Okay. It's complete garbage and so there are so many people in the world and you know you may be watching this right now and you have these incredible ideas and what you think is missing is motivation and that's not true because the way that our minds are wired
And the fact about human beings is that we are not designed to do things that are uncomfortable or scary or difficult. Our brains are designed to protect us from those things because our brains are trying to keep us alive. And in order to change, in order to build a business, in order to be the best parent, the best spouse, to do all those things that you know you want to do with your life, with your work, with your dreams, you're going to have to do things that are difficult.
uncertain or scary which sets up this problem for all of us. You're never gonna feel like it. Motivation is garbage. You only feel motivated to do the things that are easy, right? What do you think that is? Oh, I know exactly why that is. Because I've studied this so much because for me one of the hardest things to figure out was why is it so hard to do the little things that would improve my life?
And what I've come to realize and what we'll talk a lot about today is that the way that our minds are designed is our minds are designed to stop you at all costs from doing anything that might hurt you. And the way that this all happens is it all starts with something super subtle that none of us ever catch. And that is with this habit that all of us have that nobody's talking about.
We all have a habit of hesitating. You can truly trace every single problem or complaint in your life to silence and hesitation.
Those are decisions. And what I do and what's changed my life is waking up and realizing that motivation is garbage. I'm never going to feel like doing the things that are tough or difficult or uncertain or scary or new. So I need to stop waiting until I feel like it. And number two, I am one decision away from a totally different marriage, a totally different life, a totally different job, a totally different income, a totally different job.
