Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!
I'm Trevor Tortomasi…
And I'm Ryan Drillsma.
In today's news:
New types of fish, a solar eruption, and a singer's kindness.
All that and more, coming up next.
Taiwanese Scientist Discovers New Types Of Fish While in Quarantine
You've heard of Batman…
But have you heard of a batfish
You probably haven't… because some of them are still being discovered!
The batfish, also called "Halieutopsis", is a very rare kind of flat fish with a long tail that can live as deep as 4,000 meters under the sea.
That's four kilometers under the surface (水面)!
And one Taiwanese scientist has recently discovered five new kinds of these strange fish.
But the most amazing part is that he made the discoveries while he was in quarantine (檢疫)!
Because batfish are so rare, most people will never see one with their own eyes (親眼看).
So the Taiwanese scientist had to travel to some faraway places, to see the fish in museums and aquariums.
And since many countries have pandemic restrictions…
The researcher ended up doing most of his research in quarantine hotels.
He looked at photos of batfish, read descriptions of batfish, and took lots and lots of notes.
And in the end, he was able to classify (分類) five new types of the rare fish!
It may be just a small part of all our information on the animal world, but it's still important work.
Of course, if we have to be honest… none of them really look like bats.
But then… neither does Batman!
Sun Shoots Giant Solar Flare Into Space
The sun may look like a simple circle from far away, but because it's a giant ball of gas (氣體) and plasma (等離子體), its surface is always changing.
And sometimes, it even shoots flares (閃焰) out into space!
A solar flare (太陽閃焰) happens when heat from inside the sun erupts like a volcano out into space.
Now, before you feel scared, these flares aren't going to hurt our planet…
But they CAN hurt our technology (科技)!
Solar flares shoot out a magnetic field (磁層), which usually takes a few days to reach Earth.
And when it does, it can disrupt the signals of machines all over the world.
These effects can be called a "geomagnetic storm" (磁暴).
Luckily, space is very big, and most of these flares fly out in a different direction.
But one flare on February 15th was so powerful that it caused many satellites (衛星) to fall out of the sky!
This flare was called an "X-class flare", and it was one of the biggest that scientists have seen in recent years.
So why does the sun do this?
These flares come from changes in the sun's magnetic fields, which are always shifting (轉移) and reconnecting (重新連接).
That shifting even causes the sun's north pole and south pole to switch places once every 11 years!
It's no wonder this crazy ball of fire can keep us so warm…
Let's just be glad it's that far away!
Singer Billie Eilish Stops a Concert for a Fan
Billie Eilish might have won a few Grammies (葛萊美獎), but she probably won more fans for her act of kindness during a concert (演唱會) in Atlanta, Georgia.
During her "Happier than Ever" world tour, Eilish paused (暫停了) her concert to help someone in the audience (觀眾).
There was a young woman in the audience, who was having trouble breathing.
Eilish stopped singing for a moment, to ask the woman if she needed an inhaler. Billie Eilish
She then turned to security and asked them to help find one for her.
Eilish told the audience to give the sick woman some time, and to not crowd her (不要擠到她).
The entire moment was captured (被錄影) by concert-goers on video, and they shared it on social media (社交媒體).
The woman eventually recovered (恢復了), and stayed in the audience.
Now she has a story to tell her family and friends, about how Billie Eilish helped her out!
