Uncertainty typically has a negative reputation because not knowing what has happened or will happen is often depicted as undesirable, and people usually seek to minimize and avoid it.
Uncertainty can focus attention, increase engagement, and foster curiosity. When unsure, people are more likely to pay attention and stay engaged, which can lead to learning and discovery.
Frankl rejected Freud's pleasure principle, which posits that life is about seeking pleasure and relief from pain. Instead, Frankl argued that meaning, not pleasure, is what people truly seek in life.
Frankl believed that mental health is based on a degree of tension between what one has already achieved and what one still ought to accomplish. This tension drives the striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal.
Frankl identified three paths to meaning: noble responses to suffering, loving relationships, and meaningful work. These paths help individuals find purpose and transcend self-centered concerns.
Frankl believed that meaning comes from connecting to and serving something larger than oneself. Self-transcendence involves focusing on others and supporting their potential for growth and improvement.
Research shows that confusion can lead to increased interest, but it depends on the individual's openness to experience. People high in openness can feel both confused and interested simultaneously, leaning into the challenge.
The Serenity Prayer emphasizes accepting what cannot be changed, having the courage to change what can be changed, and knowing the difference. It encourages active engagement with life's challenges rather than passive acceptance.
The pursuit of meaning involves striving for goals that are self-transcendent and serve others, while the pursuit of happiness focuses on personal comfort and pleasure. Meaning often arises from tension and struggle, not comfort.
Keanu Reeves' response, 'The people who love us miss us,' highlights the practical and emotional significance of relationships. It reminds us that even in the face of uncertainty, love and connection provide meaning.
