What the press is still getting wrong in its reporting about Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, Republicans suffered a raft of defeats at the polls. Overnight, Democrats celebrating a series of key victories with Ohioans voting to guarantee abortion access, enshrining that right into the state's constitution. Meanwhile, in Kentucky, incumbent Democratic Governor Andy Beshear fending off a challenge from Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron. The Democrats won decisively in Virginia, even flipped a chamber in
in an off-year election. That's unheard of. Well, last night, all four candidates endorsed by Moms for Liberty in one Minnesota district lost to Democrats. In North Carolina, the candidate the group supported in a contested district also lost to a Democrat. In Iowa, 12 of the 13 candidates backed by Moms for Liberty were wiped out. Book banning is unpopular.
Who knew? Meanwhile, the Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump spent his week back in court. He's there a lot these days, although he hasn't exactly gone quietly. Trump took a combative stance on the witness stand yesterday, attacking the judge, the prosecutors and the case itself. It was an extraordinary moment in that courtroom yesterday. The former president bringing the grievances heard from him so often.
and on social media into live testimony from the — At one point, Judge N'Goran reminded Trump, this is not a political rally. This is a courtroom. The former president has racked up 91 felony charges across four criminal cases in New York, Florida, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. Not that all those hours in court, or under gag orders, has toned down his talk of 2024. 2024 is our final battle.
Stand with me in the fight.
We will finish the job that we started so brilliantly seven years ago. And that job, as reported by the Washington Post this week, consists of a plan to fill the swamp. Trump and his allies are mapping out ways to fill the Justice Department with lackeys to investigate Trump critics, working on plans to potentially invoke the Insurrection Act on his first day in office to allow him to deploy the military against civil demonstrations. Despite all that, according to a much-discussed poll from Siena College and the New York Times this week,
If the election were held today, Donald Trump would win. The bottom line is that The New York Times has Joe Biden down in five of six swing states that he won in 2020 to Donald Trump. The poll also shows that nearly one quarter of black voters support President Trump. That's an unheard of number. We've said this so many times on the show, but it bears repeating. General election polls a year out are not reliable.
The thing to keep in mind is that polls are like candy for reporters. They can't get enough of them, and they love gorging on them, whether or not they're really significant. Dan Froonkin is the editor of PressWatchers.org, an independent nonprofit site about political journalism. He's been writing about how the press are failing news consumers. To the extent that there was a message in the polling, to me, it was a message to the editors of our largest news organization saying,
The American public seems to be confused about a lot of stuff because, practically speaking, if they think that Donald Trump could do a better job at the economy than Joe Biden, they're probably under the impression that the economy is in the toilet right now. And it's not.
I guess I do have trouble on this point, though, that there is a disconnect between, quote unquote, how the economy is doing and how that is relating to people's expenses, the amount of money they have in their bank account. You know, we live in a country with deep income inequality, a lack of social safety net. Is it possible that both are true?
Yeah, no, I think you raise a very good point. I'm not saying the economy is great for everybody. But what's happened is that the Republican talking points that the economy is in the toilet, that inflation is destroying people's lives, is an exaggeration. And yet it gets picked up by the press and certainly doesn't get disavowed by the press.
On Press Watch, your site, you wrote about some recent reporting from The New York Times and The Washington Post looking into Trump's intention to select political appointees who will unquestioningly follow his orders and turn the prosecutorial power of the Justice Department against his political opponents.
This was essential reporting of what he plans to do on day one if he's reelected. But at the same time, you felt that something was lacking from this coverage. These two articles were fantastic in some ways in that they really looked at how would Trump govern? How would Trump be the president? Which is something that is too often overlooked in the day-in, day-out incremental horse race coverage. But...
What you're seeing is that elite journalists at our top institutions lack the vocabulary and the mechanics that are really necessary to accurately cover Trump right now. They can't bring themselves to say that he's delusional. They can't bring themselves to say that he's a would-be dictator. These articles, if you read them to a discerning reader, describe Trump's plans pretty alarmingly. They're getting rid of any obstacle to the abuse of power, gearing up
to throw political opponents in prison, preparing to unleash the military on peaceful domestic protests. Using the Insurrection Act. Using the Insurrection Act. But the language was so understated. In journalism, we often look for what's called nut graph, which is sort of like the summary paragraph. And in this case, the end of the nut graph was, and I have it right here, quote, critics have called such ideas dangerous and unconstitutional. That's the construction of
A story that has two sides that are equally valid. And one is person A says this and critics say he's wrong.
that's no longer adequate construction for what's going on in this political climate. How do you do a better job writing that story? Well, I did. In Press Watch, I actually literally rewrote the tops of both of those stories. And you write things like, close allies of Donald Trump are paving the way for dictatorship. Should he win a second term in office in 2024? You don't think that's too strong? I don't think it's too strong if you then back it up. What I'm looking for is not
hysteria, it's not hyperbole, it's accuracy. And I don't think it's accurate to say that it's just critics who have slight concerns over what Trump is doing. What is accurate is that what he's talking about doing would close 250 years of history, would violate 50 years of standards that we've established since Watergate. These are absolutely essential facts that are hidden when the language is tame and the criticism is meek.
I want to ask you about the coverage of Trump's civil fraud case this week. For those who haven't been following it, the New York Attorney General has already proven fraud, that Trump knowingly overinflated the value of his properties to get loans from banks. And what is being decided now by the judge is how much he will pay in penalties. And on Monday, he took the stand under oath. This was a historic event. How was the coverage?
If you were following it in like the live blogs on social media, what you heard was an astonishing story of somebody who was completely unhinged, who was completely delusional, who was smirking, who was making faces, who was being provocative, who was taunting the judge. But then the articles all came out and they said things like, Trump defends himself and attacks judge. What's essentially happening is these articles cover up
for Trump's unhingedness. They basically summarize a lot of things that were crazy into a few sentences that aren't crazy. And so I think it's very deceptive. I think the people who read the main story the next morning had no idea what really happened that day.
On one hand, he gets to put on a show, make it seem like it's a witch hunt, rile up consumers of the right wing media who would be happy to see that he was barking like a mad dog at the judge and at the attorney general. But for the legitimate press, it kind of just seems like, well, yeah, if you're a defendant, then you're angry and you make a case for yourself, right? Yeah.
I mean, I remember watching the coverage of the COVID pandemic under Trump, and he'd get up and he'd say something completely nonsensical. Reporters would follow all of themselves trying to sort of make sense of it and explain what he just said, as opposed to reporting, Donald Trump just said a bunch of stuff that made no sense. My take right now is that people are less interested in covering his unhinged statements because they're afraid that they'll be giving him
publicity. They'll be helping him spread disinformation and misinformation. But that was one of the lessons from the Trump era, right? Like, don't just cover everything he says. Amplifying him does reward him and does risk even further radicalizing his supporters. But you can't ignore it when this guy who could be the president is saying things that are just nuts. I have a proposal here, which I've made in my website, which is that when he's unhinged, yes, you report what he said.
What you do then is you go and you talk to his supporters. You go talk to the Republican leaders and to his base and the people who support him and say, do you agree with what he just said? How can that be? What's going on there? Is there no limit to what he could say and you'd still support him? The news value to me of an incremental unhinged statement by Donald Trump is he said this and the Republican Party still supports him because that's astonishing.
Dan, this feels like deja vu all over again. I mean, we've been hearing warnings from press critics for years now about
how to cover Donald Trump in the right way. Just this week, Margaret Sullivan published a piece in The Guardian titled, The Public Doesn't Understand the Risks of a Trump Victory. That's the Media's Fault. Great piece. I agree that we have culpability here and that we could do it better. But it's also the case that facts don't seem to change minds like they used to. There have been warnings of his dangers to our democracy. And...
You could argue there aren't enough, but perhaps they're just not sticking. The press critics have been saying stuff like this for years now. That's absolutely correct. And they've not been heard. But I think that at some point it may sink in. We may have to wait until the next generation of editors. The leaders of our newsrooms have just gotten used to still covering what is basically an asymmetrical political climate as if there are two equal parties involved in the discussion.
My feeling is at some point, one of these editors is going to wake up, look in the mirror and say, wait a minute, we're not doing this right. We need to reset because we are not successfully informing the American electorate. I felt this way back when two-thirds of Americans believed that Saddam Hussein was behind 9-11. News organizations at some point need to say, whoa, what we're doing isn't working.
That's what I think people like Margaret Sullivan and Jay Rosen and I and a whole bunch of other people who've been saying this for a while are saying. Stop what you're doing. Realize that it's not actually getting the job done of informing the American people and figure out how else to do it.

Not sure if you've heard, but the world of public radio podcasts ain't doing so great. NPR planning to lay off about 10% of its current staff due to the soft ad market. It's a wrenching time here in the newsroom due to what NPR's chief executive calls an existential threat. Those layoffs in March were followed in the fall by a string of cuts at WNYC, our producing station. On the media's team shrunk.
Many great shows across the industry have been canceled altogether, which we'll get to. It's a depressing reversal of an extraordinary boom in podcasting that saw the expansion of meaningful deep dive reporting, a generation of new celebrities, and for a select few, staggering payouts.
Podcasting is a rich and varied part of the media industry nowadays. But we wanted to take stock of where our particular slice of the industry is today and how we got here. Because podcasting transformed our sleepy world of public radio.
And we transformed podcasting. But first, we're going to take a look at the unlikely story of how the medium became a thing in the first place and the company at the center of it all. Producer Molly Rosen has the story. It's impossible to tell the story of how podcasting came to be without Apple.
And about a month ago, the company rolled out a new operating system. iOS 17 for iPhone is now out for everyone. And some of the updates might have an impact on how you're listening to this show right now. And there's actually huge changes to the Apple Podcast app. You can now create custom episode artwork that's prominently featured on the Listen Now and your show page. The update to the Apple Podcast app also includes a tweak to how podcast downloads work.
It's a small change that might mean fewer automatic downloads of a podcast-backed catalog. As a podcast user, you're free to shrug and move on. But for podcast creators, this could be a big deal. Lower numbers, while a more accurate reflection of listenership, could translate into less ad money. Less ad money means fewer podcasts. We'll get to that later in the show.
But I wanted to know how a small change in Apple's software is capable of sending ripple effects across an entire industry. The story starts in the early 2000s. The same year the iPod had launched in 2003, while I was still working at Apple, there was this group doing audio blogging. Kevin Marks is a software engineer. He worked at Apple from 1998 to 2003. He was trying to solve the problem of streaming audio and video on the internet. The problem being, it didn't work.
The files were too big. They needed too much bandwidth. More than early 2000s internet could handle.
So he became very interested in what those audio bloggers were doing. The daily source code, hosted by the DJ Adam Curry, was one of the first podcasts ever made.
The term itself was coined by a Guardian journalist, mashing up iPod and broadcast. Podcast. Adam Curry, with Dave Weiner, a software engineer, came up with the idea of sending sound files like a blog post down an RSS feed.
In the early days, you'd listen to these podcasts on the computer, like reading a blog. But then in October 2003, the programmer and blogger Kevin Marks wrote a script that would download podcasts, copy them to iTunes, and sync them to his iPod so he could listen on the go, like people do today. He demoed the script at a blogger conference at Harvard. I mean, there was a dozen people in the room. They were like, oh, that's a good idea. Yeah, interesting. And then in 2005...
Apple launched integration of podcasting to iTunes. Podcasting started off as Wayne's World for radio. This is Steve Jobs on a stage at the All Things Digital conference in May 2005. He's in his trademark look, jeans and a black long-sleeve shirt, brimming with founder energy. He pulls up iTunes.
And there's a little thing called podcast right here. You click that and we've got a page full of podcasts. All these things sync up with your iPod every time you sync your iPod. And remember, this has been really hard to do so far. You've got to download this third party app. And already millions of people are subscribing to these podcasts. And I think this is just going to send it into orbit. Can you tell me about your experience before Apple really got in the game and then how Apple changed things?
There was no guarantee that podcasting was going to succeed before Apple got into it. Rob Walsh is the VP of Podcast Relations at Libsyn, one of the first hosting platforms. I always say there's three inflection points in podcasting. The first inflection point was September 2005, and that was iTunes. The second big inflection point was 2007, which would have been when the iPhone was released.
And then the third inflection point is not serial. It's iOS 8 going native on the iPhone. When you say native, what do you mean? You buy a phone. What's on that phone?

This past week, 56%, 57% of downloads directly across all Libsyn's platforms went directly to Apple Podcasts app.
Spotify was 15%, number two. And then there's YouTube. More and more podcasters are posting their interviews to YouTube as videos, and more and more listeners, or viewers, are finding them there. But whether YouTube videos actually count as podcasts depends on who you ask. People don't like it, but my definition of a podcast is you have an RSS 2.0 compliant feed, and it is in Apple Podcasts.
Because if you're not in Apple Podcasts, then you're not in all those different apps. He's referring to Apple's directory, which they made public back in 2005. It's like a centralized podcast library. As long as you meet Apple's specifications, you can submit your podcast to it. And then the podcast is there for any potential listener to find in any app. Without Apple, none of that would be possible. Now, I'll say this.
Steve Jobs and Apple had an ulterior motive and people don't realize why Apple did support us. And that was because they wanted to sell iPods. So if you're going to sell an iPod in all these countries around the world, you have to have something to put on it. Well, in a lot of the countries, they didn't have rights yet. And here is this medium called podcasting, which has universal global rights. So they could have iPods for sale in Albania and have an Albanian iTunes store that has nothing but podcasts because they don't have the rights yet for music.
I hear what you're saying that overall with Apple's role, it's generally been a very open ecosystem and they've been good custodians of the medium, you would say. Yes. Does it ever concern you that things could go a different way in the future and that one company has this kind of power over the standards of the medium? I'm not concerned it's Apple. What I'm concerned is other companies haven't been able to move up. And I felt that Google Podcasts was going to be the next inflection point. Once Google made that
native, I felt we would see a bump like we saw with iOS. And I was obviously dead wrong. So Apple's going to continue to be that dominant player in this space. And people have to remember, podcasting ecosystem is such a tiny percentage of Apple's revenue. The amount of revenue that Apple makes from podcasting, even with the subscriptions, is
is less than the interest they earned while we've been talking for this hour. That is part of what's interesting to me, though, because I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing, but I do see this imbalance. How much podcasting matters to Apple? In terms of making money, it's just not that important, I think. But how much Apple matters to podcasting is a lot. I would be more concerned if Apple cared about making money from podcasting. That would be my concern.
As long as Apple goes with podcasting is a great thing for our consumers, and we like podcasting because people that own iPhones like podcasts, I think we're fine. And Apple's been a really good steward in this space.
And I believe they're going to continue to be a very good steward in the space, as long as they don't want it to become a profit center. Now, in 2023, podcast technology works pretty much the same as when Kevin Marks wrote the first code to feed podcasts onto iTunes 20 years ago. You have a feed and the feed links to a file on a server. You download the file. Do you feel like its development was a little bit random and then it just stuck?
Or do you think there was like a logic to why the RSS MP3 combination is still what we use today? It's a little bit random. Yeah. I mean, I think the point was it fitted neatly with the episodic nature of blogs anyway. And there was a huge...
ridiculous standards war between different kinds of feeds and you could make a serial length drama about that. Tech standards do tend to persist and a big chunk of that is that they become harder to change when you've got lots of people both writing and reading them.
We've interviewed Cory Doctorow on the show somewhat recently about his theory of the internet, which we always have to bleep because it's public radio. But he said that there's one part of the internet that it's internetification resistant. Well, I've got some good news for you, Brooke, which is that podcasting has thus far been very interesting.
Really? Yeah, it's pretty cool. Which isn't to say that people aren't trying. Do you agree with that? And why do you think it's remained such an open ecosystem? Yeah, it was this fairly simple standard that anyone could adopt. So there was a large ecosystem of people doing different bits of it. And every now and then somebody does try and privatize it. And there's been lots of attempts to replace feed formats with new feed formats, but they're still there and they still work.
The same thing that's made podcast technology a little wonky and a little random has also kept it on this different path than other digital media. It was coded by techies to solve a delivery problem and then given a home by Apple to sell hardware. And for listeners, well, we can subscribe to a gazillion podcasts for free from the app of our choice. What could possibly go wrong? For On The Media, I'm Molly Rosen.

Now we dive into podcasting's first boom and bust cycle. Fun fact, OTM was among the first public radio shows to release entire episodes as a podcast back in 2005. By 2014, when this story begins, all the cool kids were doing it.
This American Life had been publishing as a podcast in addition to a radio show for many years by that point. This is Nick Kwa. He's basically the podcast critic. He writes for New York Magazine. As Nick points out, This American Life was still very much radio first. The form and content were limited by the radio listening experience. Because when you're beholden to the classic broadcast radio model,
It's hard to tell a serialized story because if you were a radio listener and you caught an episode in minute 22 without the context of the 22 minutes beforehand, it's a little bit difficult to get to be sticky. You probably see where he's going with this. In 2014, the team released Serial, hosted by This American Life reporter Sarah Koenig. A 13-episode season investigating the murder of Haemin Lee and her convicted killer Adnan Syed, then just a high school student.
It showed that you could use a podcast to do serious, in-the-weeds investigative journalism and attract an enormous audience. Serial, the most successful podcast ever. It averages more than 2 million visitors per episode. It's a real-life murder mystery that has those...
millions of fans hanging on every clue. Audio is hot again thanks to the smash success of a series called Serial. More and more people are listening, binge listening even, to Pod. Serial showed that this kind of stuff was possible and that there was an appetite for it. But the question has always been like,
Can you make a real business out of this? Probably the most famous attempt was Gimlet. I watched Gimlet starting. I was like, this is a new kind of company. This is a company that makes public radio style podcasts.
but isn't sort of in that system. Alex Soojong-Loughlin produces the podcast Normal Gossip and recently wrote about the early days of Gimlet for Defector. But back in 2014, she was one of a wave of journalists entering the industry who were inspired by serial and long-form narrative shows on Gimlet. It really expanded the world of podcasts. It made the world a lot bigger.
Started by This American Life alum Alex Bloomberg and co-founder Matt Lieber, Gimlet burst onto the scene with a list of plucky shows. Reply All, which was a spinoff of a WNYC show. And on the media show, no less. And on the media show! Yes. Oh my god. TLDR. TLDR, yes. So yeah, Reply All was the big one. It was a podcast about...
the internet and internet culture. There was Mystery Show hosted by Starley Kine, which was a quirky, weird show where Starley played a detective trying to solve really mundane mysteries. And it was incredibly charming. God, I sound like such a fangirl. And then you had Startup, Alex Bloomberg's meta podcast about starting Gimlet. The first episode of Startup
called How to Pitch a Billionaire. It was him pitching Chris Saka, who's a tech VC guy billionaire. If I were calling an Uber right now and it said, it's going to be here in two minutes, and that was all the time you had, what are you doing? So I'm making a network of digital podcasts that is going to meet...
Sorry. He was willing to make himself look bad on the show, I think, because it made him a more compelling protagonist. That warts and all honesty hooked listeners and investors. I don't know what it is, but somehow a podcast about me failing to generate FOMO and potential investors?
generated a lot of FOMO and potential investors. They raised over $28 million, and you could hear that influx of cash on its shows. There was an episode of Reply All where Alex Goldman called back a telemarketer and then hunted him down, like flew to whatever country he was in. It was India, yeah. Yeah, went to the building where his office was.
And I remember being so enchanted with that episode because it took an everyday thing and took it to the furthest degree possible.
And I think that was only possible because of the budget, the money that they had. Audible, iHeartMedia, Pineapple Street, Sony, Pushkin Industries, companies new and old jumped in to get a piece of the narrative podcast boom. There was a succession of shows during that 2014 to I want to see 2017-18 stretch where there was a
string of hits, right? Those missing Richard Simmons. Revisionist history from Malcolm Blattwell. You could argue, actually, I kind of felt that Death, Sex, and Money, for you guys, had a little bit of this heat when it came out, even though that's a weekly show. I will tell you, Micah, it was so fun. Anna Sale is the host and creator of Death, Sex, and Money, a show made by WNYC Studios.
In May 2014, the first episode of Death, Sex and Money dropped.
Who in the world would come up with a title like that? The musician Bill Withers was her first guest, and it was the kind of offbeat, probing conversation Anna would become known for. It's all the essential stuff, right? Yeah, yeah. The third episode of Anna's show featured a painful dilemma. Her relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Arthur.
We'd broken up because we didn't live in the same place. And then my ex wanted to get back together. And I was like, how do we do this? Arthur knew that Anna loved interviewing Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson during her days as a politics reporter on the campaign trail. And Arthur was like, I have an idea. If I write Alan Simpson a letter, maybe he'll call Anna and it'll make her laugh. It's such a funny premise. So what did the letter say? He said, help me get this woman back.
Basically. Here goes. The love of my life, Miss Anna Sale, lives in New York City. A month ago, Anna stopped believing I would ever close the distance to be with her, and she cut me loose.
I don't blame her. I was being a fool and I took her for granted. And what he didn't know was that Al Simpson is also married to this incredible woman named Ann Simpson, who when Al Simpson did in fact call me, I heard Ann talking in the background. This is just the sweetest letter. And I said, well, what's Ann think I should do? And she got on the phone. So it is like a weird story. And it worked. It worked.

of what was possible. WNYC was jazz too. Public radio stations had long been limited to just three ways of bringing in the dough. Sponsorship, what we call radio ads, membership, donations from listeners, and grants from foundations. WNYC is a little different. We also have a distribution arm and we collect syndication fees for nationally distributed shows like OTM.
Now WNYC could sell podcast ads without having to jostle for a slot on the crowded radio schedule.
It was an electric time for the podcast industry. It felt like a new form of art and journalism was being built in real time, and Hollywood was paying attention. There were a bunch of these TV shows based on podcasts. Dirty John on Bravo, Two Dope Queens on HBO, Dr. Death on Peacock, Song Exploder on Netflix,
Podcasts were shiny, and those of us making them were suddenly in demand. The podcast boom was kind of crazy for us because all of a sudden people that work for us were just getting offered $150,000 a year or whatever. This is Jesse Thorne, host of Bullseye, speaking here with reporter Emily Russell for her audio piece for Columbia Journalism Review. One of her big revelations? The math on these beautiful serialized shows just wasn't working.
Here's Emily. For a narrative audio documentary project, budgets from the major buyers, such as Audible, iHeart, and Sony, could range from a quarter to half a million dollars. But projected revenue during a show's release might be closer to $200,000. And that's for the rare show with a million listeners.
The fact is, Gimlet's specialty, our business model basically, had been to make a kind of podcast that costs a lot of money. Alex Bloomberg again in a 2019 episode of Startup, in which he's reflecting on how five years after Gimlet's launch, the company was in dire financial straits. A lot of the things we assumed would happen, didn't. We assumed audiences would grow, but instead they plateaued. Our launches had not done as well as they had in the past.
And some of our biggest shows with the largest audiences still weren't making money because we couldn't sell ads on them. There was another kind of show that was getting more and more popular, a kind of show that wasn't what we specialized in. Shows like Pod Save America and My Favorite Murder and The Dax Shepard Podcast.
He's describing the always-on podcast. They release consistently, without breaks, unlike a seasonal narrative like Serial that takes months to make and only runs for a handful of weeks.
Those gab fest type podcasts are fun to listen to because you feel like you're hanging out with a group of friends just shooting the breeze. It's a part time job for me and for my co-hosts. We come into the studio. We chat to each other for an hour. We have a producer who edits it and puts it up. Felix Salmon is a financial journalist at Axios and a co-host of the Slate Money podcast.
The amount of work that goes into Slate Money every week is absolutely tiny compared to the amount of work that goes into a super-produced and edited and scripted, in many ways, podcast from WNYC or Gimlet. Despite the apparent troubles with Gimlet's business model, in 2019, this crazy thing happened. Fresh off announcing that it made its first ever quarterly profit, Spotify also revealed a big bet...
By exclusively hosting Joe Rogan, Kim Kardashian, and Gimlet shows like Reply All and Heavyweight, Spotify thought it could differentiate itself from other music streamers.
founders of Gimlet stood to make millions. Spotify was throwing around amounts of money that are quite normal in the music industry, but that are extraordinarily large by podcast standards. And that just threw everyone off and made everyone think that there was much more money in podcasting than perhaps there actually is.
It was the last burst of hot air in the prestige podcast bubble. Within just a few years, Spotify appeared to change its mind as financial uncertainty swept the tech industry. Spotify is laying off 200 workers or about 2% of its employees worldwide. The cutbacks will be in Spotify's podcasting unit. In addition to another round of layoffs at Spotify, the Gimlet brand is being sort of hoovered into a larger Spotify Studios banner.
So functionally, Gimlet Media as a brand doesn't quite exist anymore, which is kind of like the symbolic end of this era. And then this year... NPR sent layoff notices to about a tenth of its employees this week. The network also announced the cancellation of four podcasts. Some of them are pretty familiar to a lot of folks. Invisibilia, louder than a riot about hip-hop. You have Rough Translation...
And there will also be layoffs at the satellite radio company Sirius XM. They're eliminating 475 jobs. That's 8% of its staff. Pushkin Industries, Malcolm Gladwell's podcast company, cut 30% of its staff.
LAist, formerly known as KPCC, got rid of some of its podcast-only shows. So did OTM's producing station WNYC, which canceled More Perfect and LaBrega and cut staff members from Radiolab and the New Yorker Radio Hour and OTM. The company may also sunset Anna Sales' Death, Sex, and Money. We are continuing to produce the show with our current team as New York Public Radio employees through the end of this year.
And then something has to change. The show will stick around, she says, if the company can find a financial partner to support its costs, which could be seen as part of a wider reshuffling of public radio podcasts.

You're making me do it. My team and our listeners. And I don't want to let them down. Do you think...
the team will stay intact? Like, do you think they'll be able to come with you wherever you go next? I don't know.
This has been the most challenged year for the podcast industry at large, the podcast ecosystem, since I started covering it, which is 2014. When I asked Nick Kwa what accounted for this flurry of layoffs, he quoted Leo Tolstoy. Happy families are all alike. Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. What happened to you at WNYC is not what happened to Pushkin.
It's not what happened to Gimlet, right? Everybody comes in from a very different category, but everybody's depressed by the same larger macroeconomic conditions. As I was speaking with Nick Kwa, a podcast expert, and Felix Salmon, a financial journalist, about what was happening in our industry and in public radio, I came up against three contradictions. Contradiction one is,
Prestige podcasts are shrinking, but podcasting is growing. The podcast ecosystem, just looking at it from an economic point of view, is still growing at a really quite objectively impressive rate. We are going to surpass $2 billion of podcast ad revenue in 2023. That's billion with a B.
And in 2025, it's going to hit nearly $4 billion. The water sounds really warm. Why are my friends getting laid off? Why are some of my favorite shows getting shut down? It doesn't make a lot of sense. Really good question.
According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau's latest report, overall podcast ad revenue has never been better, especially for sports and comedy podcasts. But
But news podcasts saw a small drop in ad revenue in the past year. Podcasts are still being made and making money, but it's only a certain kind of podcast that's making the biggest sums of that money. Nick Kwa. We're talking primarily about personality-driven talk shows, the Joe Rogans, the Call Her Daddies, the Marc Marons. That is just an engine that keeps printing money. It's a very efficient business model.
Whereas the sort of long-form narrative podcast format that I love, it's not dead. The dream of it has become harder. Contradiction number two. Advertising for news shows is going down because the economy is weird, but actually the economy is doing okay. The economy is doing great. We just had the third quarter GDP figures come out. We grew at 4.9%, which is
crazy, like super fast economic growth. There was a little bit of a pullback towards the end of last year where people were worried about a recession. I talked about that with Brooke on this very show. I remember. And in anticipation of this expected recession, a bunch of advertisers said, well, the first thing we want to cut is our advertising. We saw a
a $7 million drop in sponsorship sales between our fiscal year 22 and FY23. This is LaFontaine Oliver, New York Public Radio's president, speaking last month on WNYC's daily call-in show hosted by Brian Lehrer. Oliver declined OTM's request for an interview. And for us as a nonprofit, that is significant. And so we've had to unfortunately take steps in order
saying goodbye to some of our wonderful colleagues. We are focusing on the shows that can serve both our radio and our podcast audiences. Our multi-platform shows, our national shows like
you know, on the media and the New Yorker Radio Hour and Kai Wright's program Notes from America and Radiolab. LaFontaine Oliver's multi-platform audio strategy brings us to contradiction number three. Radio is becoming more important even as its listenership declines. Look at the New York Times, which has begun syndicating two of its popular podcasts, The Daily and The Ezra Klein Show, on public radio.
Vox has done the same with its show Today Explained. I think of it as just very sensible business, which is you want to maximize the number of revenue streams associated with any piece of, and I'm going to use a terrible term here, IP, right? If you just have a podcast, really,
really the only way you can monetize that audio is by selling ads against the podcast. But what if I said to you, you can just take exactly the same piece of audio and get two more revenue streams from it? You can sell ads on the radio. And as you say, you can syndicate that show to other radio stations who pay you cash to put your show online.
on their air. So that's now three different revenue streams from the same piece of audio, and that's got to be a much more attractive business than just only having one. But the radio listenership tends to skew older, tends to skew less diverse. The numbers for the radio listenership are, depending on what market you're looking at, steady but
pretty clearly trending downward. It's no TikTok, right? Radio is orders of magnitude larger than podcasting. It reaches millions of people at all times of the day or night. It is a massive business. There is a trend there. It's probably downwards, but it's slowly downwards and it's predictably downwards. And what we've learned over the past couple of years in podcasting is that it's much less predictable than radio is.
Nick Kwa feels that by cutting much of their podcast-only shows, NPR and WNYC are setting themselves up for future failure. It feels like both organizations are receding deeper and deeper into itself when it should be unfolding wider and expanding and trying to
really reinvent itself for the changing media landscape, demographic, and the world that it exists in. If you are not reaching new people where they are,
You will not be here in 20 years. It is as simple as that. I'm sorry. I feel like I'm very angry. I'm coming off very angry and I am. But it's like, boy, nobody's asked me about this stuff for a while. And I'm like, I'm really pissed about it. Why are you pissed? Because I value public radio. I really value the enterprise of producing journalism and creative work that is for

These guys have been in the podcast game for a long time, right? They didn't just dip their toes. And they're saying 10 years on of experimenting with podcasts, they're really expensive to make. You got to pay those hosts so much money. You got to fly them all around the place to report these fancy stories. It didn't work.
So why are we chasing a unicorn when we've got old reliable over on 93.9? Two things. One, old reliable is not going to be reliable forever. Something feels different about how fast things are changing and the way that we're moving today. And the second thing I'll say about it is that did it fail because of the theory or did it fail because of the execution? I would argue it's the execution.
I'll say it out loud. It does feel to a large extent like budget mismanagement, right? You're focusing on all the executives that you want to pay lucrative salaries to, right, in relation to your newsroom. The model works within the context of an organization that's able to support it.
According to public data from 2021, keep in mind there's a two-year lag for non-profit tax records, New York Public Radio's last president made $749,000 a year, including bonuses, compared to NPR's president at the time, who made $466,000 a year. NPR is around twice the size of New York Public Radio, and yet our last president made $280K more. So back in June, even before COVID,
We started talking about the possibilities of layoffs. I made the decision to cut executive bonuses for the year. Current New York Public Radio president LaFontaine Oliver explaining to WNYC host Brian Lair why he chose not to reduce executive base salaries in response to our $10 million deficit. We did not feel some executive roles to keep our overall executive salary pool low.
And as there's been turnover, we've hired people at lower salaries than their predecessors, myself included. And how did you decide to not cut our local news team? Local news is our stock and trade. And going into and
election year and also thinking about the legacy and the history specifically of WNYC, you know, going back, you know, 99 years being focused on serving the local news needs of New Yorkers. Um,
That was just really important to us. After years of incubating and betting on the podcast economy, New York Public Radio appears to be changing course. But Nick Kwa believes that podcast fans should remain hopeful. The sort of fact remains that podcasting is here to stay. People want this stuff. People want to make this stuff. It's becoming a bigger part of a lot of people's media habits, media diets.
This is something that every television studio has already known, every film studio has already known, every music label has already known, that there are ups and there are downs. This is podcasting's first big down. And I think there's going to be a generation of talent that's going to come out and decide all the stronger for it. And maybe all the smarter, hopefully. One of the big lessons of the podcast industry and digital media in general is that if you think you can get rich off of journalism, you will either fail or cash out at other people's expense.
When it comes to public media, the challenge we face is experimenting sustainably, taking risks and giving new shows space to grow while balancing the books. Good audio journalism takes time. It's also expensive, which is not a bad thing, just a fact. It's what our listeners pay to support us.
The profit centers of the podcasting world will zoom past public media, past hard news, past radio. Their water is hot. Ours is lukewarm. But it's actually kind of fine once you get used to it. ♪
