BBC Radio 1 Radio 1's all day breakfast with Greg James Hello everybody, the podcast is back! Whee! Whee! Whee! Woo! Yay! Woo! Whee! Woo! Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Yeah? Bowen Yang. He is one of the stars of Saturday Night Live, and he was talking about his brand new film. Talked about Ariana Grande, talked about SNL, and he was just really good. So let's get straight into that. BBC Radio 1. Bowen Yang, welcome to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Hi, Greg, how's it going? Really well. Good. I'm so happy to meet you. So happy to meet you. I showed my cards with you over DMs. I was like, I'm nervous to come on.
I don't know why I said that. We've been talking about you on The Breakfast Show for a while now. That's not true. In a good way. No, we have. Because I am completely obsessed and have been obsessed since I was a kid with Saturday Night Live. So we always play Saturday Night Live clips on The Breakfast Show. Bless you. As soon as someone said, Bowen Yang's over, immediately I went, Ron's been splinted.
And I also immediately went, carrots. Carrots? Okay. What's the carrots thing? On your podcast, Las Corchadistas. Yes, very good. You interviewed Ariana Grande. Yes. And you managed to get this amazing bit out of her, which I just, I basically saw this video all day for about three weeks. The Ron's Been Splinched video? Let's play it. Can you do your Hermione impression?
It's an amazing Hermione impression. She just, God, she's one of our great mimics. Obviously you love podcasting and how aware of you of Radio 1 are you? Algorithmically what I get is like you playing games with Jade or something. Is it the sitting down, standing up one? Yes, it does stand up. Good game.
So I wanted to talk to you about your journey through SNL because as an SNL nerd, my best mate bought me the compendium, the book. Oh, it's great. Which is an amazing history of 50 years of this amazing show. Yeah. You clearly love, you love that it changes every week. I mean, that's one of the things that I'm in awe of is that you... It's like a procedural. It's like, we call it like a comedy emergency room. Yeah, but if it's not ready, you just have to go. It's
always been Ruff Around the Edges. Even your favorite air of the show, there are stinkers. Go back and watch any random episode of your favorite time on the show, and there's just two
Good sketches, couple of duds. Every other episode, maybe if you're lucky, there's one great thing. But yeah, I might introduce you to our boss. Yeah. He needs to be reminded of that sometimes. This is every now and then you're going to do a dud, but we're live every day for three and a half hours. It can't be amazing all the time. Exactly. Right? Can you call our boss? Yeah. And say there's going to be duds. Yeah. Right now. Yeah, why not? No.
Yeah, why the hell not? I can call him from... What's his name? Alad. Alad? Yeah, he's called Alad. Alad. Oh my goodness. Hi, Greg. Hi, yeah. I've just got someone who wanted to say hello to you quickly. Hi, Alad. This is stateside C-lister Bowen Yang. Oh my God, I'm freaking. No, don't freak. So I was just telling Greg about...
how I would like to tell my boss, Lauren Michaels, that SNL is a tough gig because every week you're bound to get some duds. It's a weekly show. The creative output is so tough. And I've been commissioned by these people to sort of relay that to you. And we're going to get some duds every now and then on Radio 1.
That's just a friendly reminder, right? I'm so sorry to do this. I am pleased to let you know that I have no idea what's going on, but I am so happy it's happened. So thank you. Of course, you're welcome. I'm happy it happened too. But this is truly...
This is radio. I love it. You just get to do stuff like this. We don't even get to do this on live television. Great. Okay, well, it's nice to talk to you, Alan. And you. Thank you for coming in. Thanks, Alan. Did I go okay? Yeah, it's great. I mean, I'll tell you what you've done. You've dazzled him. I don't know. He was deeply confused. But you've dazzled him. Okay. It's great because that now, that buys us so much time. You give us so much credit. Bowen, thank you.
Let's play a song. Okay. Should we play some Gaga? Yes. You can play an old or a new. You can play whatever you want. I'm going to play. Can we play a new one? Killer featuring Gustafsson. Let's play it. Great. Radio One Breakfast with Greg James.
Lady Gaga on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Greg James over here. Bowen Yang over there. Hi. We're having a nice time. We are. Sorry that I made you call our boss. I loved it. I was sweating. That's the most... I don't get that stressed out on SNL. Because I have a script. I know what I'm saying.
Can we talk about the wedding banquet? Yes. Please. Yes. Finally. He's getting around to talking about it. So talk us through how your version of it has been altered. Yeah. A lot of our listeners won't know the original. Right. The original 93 version is about a gay couple. One of them is Taiwanese. He is dating a man, but in order to assuage his parents who are coming to visit, he tells them that he's been engaged to this woman and it's one of his tenants.
There's less of a class dynamic in this current one, and it's more about a gay couple and a lesbian couple who are best friends who live together. The lesbian couple is having trouble with her IVF treatments, and one of the men in the gay couple is still in the closet to his family in Korea...
I'm his boyfriend who is commitment phobic, who rejects his marriage proposal to stay in the country. But then this is so convoluted, but I swear it's so fun. No, it's very clear. It is very clear. It's very clear. And then my boyfriend ends up proposing to one of the women to pay for their IVF treatments and also stay at a sham wedding because his grandmother is coming into town.
So I watched it last night and I loved it. Oh good, I'm so glad. So sweet, so funny, so poignant, but also lovely to see you. My God, the boy can act. No way, Greg. We've seen you be really fun, but now we're sort of seeing you treading the boards. What I will say that I liked doing was I like a lingering stare. I got to do that a couple of times in this and it just stays on me. It holds on me while I like...
pensively look out into the middle distance. And completely different, I guess, to the filming situation around Wicked. Definitely. Ariana did not have to call anybody. I got to do it on my own time. And I can't believe how much I looked out with everything. Between SNL and Wicked and now this. I'm like, the streak's got to end.
So you spent a lot of time here. Definitely. And Arianna's talked about Hampstead quite a lot. In fact, there's a song called Hampstead that she's released on the deluxe version of the album. That's right. And that is where I walk my dog all the time.
And it's where just celebrities walk through dogs all the time. So like Ari had so many stories of just like walking around and just seeing random people here and there. You do. I wonder, have you done a Hampstead Heath walk with Ariana? I've done a Hampstead Heath walk with Ariana. We would go to get dinner at the Hollybush. Right. I wonder if you've met my dog. Have I? Show me, please show me a picture of your dog. You might have met him. I mean, he's called Barney. He's a... Oh!
Barney! So cute! He's a cute boy. I have dog fever right now, so you're really...
A very barky chocolate Labrador. That's him. I love that. I love the idea that he would have unwittingly maybe walked around near you and Ariana Grande and wouldn't know. We would have known about him because he would have barked at us. He definitely would have barked at us. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So maybe you haven't met him just yet. Ari's got a barker. Ari's got a dog named Toulouse. Toulouse. Toulouse. Such a great name for a dog. Such a cute dog name. No, we loved Hampstead. We really liked it. Yeah. I love it here.
Well, we love having you here. And we'll do What's My Age Again with listener Maddy, who is patiently waiting. Maddy. Bowen Yang is my special guest on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show this morning. We're talking about his brand new film, The Wedding Banquet, which is a delight. Thank you. By the way, it's a delightful, lovely springtime film. It's a springtime film. Yeah, it's really nice. I would say so. We need a little bit of lightness. Oh.
In the thaw of spring. Yeah, I think so. It's been a cold winter. It has. But it's a really beautiful film and you should all go and watch it. As I said, the ensemble together is just really a lovely, lovely watch. Ah, thanks. We're going to do a little game called What's My Age Again? How are you feeling about this? I am generally not good at guessing, but let's do it.
Maddie, welcome to the Radio Unbreakable show. Hi, Maddie. Oh, hi. You're a Bowen Yang fan, aren't you? There is like a weird connection. But in Wicked, I went to a performing arts school. So some of my college friends were in the scene of What's It Feeling? And you're all dancing around each other. Oh, my goodness. So that was very surreal. Wait, but you've already given yourself away if you've had college mates be in the scene with me.
He's always working. I'm always working. His brain's always ticking over. Oh, he's always working. Whoopee, whoopee. Okay. Okay, well, let's do What's My Age again then. So, Maddie, we are going to try and guess your age from just some loads of silly questions. So, Bowen, would you like the first question? What do you want to go for? Sure. I'll do the first one. Yeah, go ahead. Maddie, where do you like to shop for your...
Garments. Vintage, like online, secondhand, always. Okay. And then also Lululemon. Okay, great. She's active. She's active and she likes sustainable fashion. So you're online, so you're computer literate and you like moving. Okay, how many people do you live with, Maddy?
I live with one other person, but that is about to change in a couple of days. To what? To a new city, to a new group of people. She's going to the big town. Congratulations. Big town, something like that. Wow. Is it like a Hallmark movie? As Hallmark as Berlin can be. Oh my goodness, congratulations. Thanks very much. Bowen, can I ask you something? Yes, please, please.
What are you going to go and do in Berlin? I am working for a fitness and health tech startup and I'm managing their gym studios. Great. Cool. Very cool. Great life. Hence the Lululemon. It'll be very fun. Hence the Lululemon. Maddie, who was your first celebrity crush?
Oh, it's going to really give it away. That's okay. Zac Efron. When were you first made aware of Zac Efron? When I was in high school. So that feels like a little bit, I feel like, and then I'm older than Maddie. Okay. Like Maddie would have developed like a quickening, you know, at an earlier age for Zac Efron. A quickening. A quickening. You know? What a way to start.
That's the best way someone's ever described my... A quickening. Yeah, a quickening on the grass. A quickening is great. It's so good. I'm going to steal that. Yeah. Yeah, I think younger. And also, I'm going to Berlin to find my dreams. And I've got no ties here. Maybe you have got ties here. Maybe, I don't know. Maybe you're... Are you leaving a partner behind? That's my next question. Are you leaving a partner behind? Oh, absolutely not. You don't date in London. Terrible. Then she's definitely under 30. Yeah.
I think so, yeah. Because once you hit 30, you're settling on the cusp. You take whatever you get. Yeah, whatever you get. Bowen Yang is my special guest, and we're guessing Maddie's age. Is it time to guess? Yeah, we're running out of time. No, we've got whatever, but if you want to... No, no, no, one more question. One more question each. One more question each. Okay. Favourite movie to watch when you're sad? Is there a go-to movie? Yeah.
Oh my god, yes. Little Women, but the latest, latest one with Florence Pugh, Greta Gerwig's one. Saoirse, yeah, great. Yeah, Saoirse, all of that. Great. All of that. All of that. It's the best. I'm so furious. That's Saoirse doing American. I'm so furious in that movie. Or maybe I'm doing, maybe that was Lady Bird. I'm quite furious. Okay. Okay.
Have you got a go-to sad film, Bowen? Go-to sad film? Like Bridesmaids, probably. It's a banker. Final question. Maddie. Go on. Go on. Maddie. She's quickening. Oh, this is so hard. What is your favorite American television show?
Ooh. Right now, a classic Grey's Anatomy. Okay. One of the best you've ever produced. Ever. Yes, thank you. You, personally. That was me. You did that. You, personally. Okay. I've got an idea. Okay, let's go for it. All right, let's... I'll write mine down so you see that I'm not cheating. Okay, great. I think...
Right, so we've got Zac Efron moving to Berlin. Exciting life ahead of her. You've got your whole life ahead of you, kid. Okay, I've locked in my answer. Bowen, what are you saying? I'm going to say 28. Oh, I've gone for 29. Great. So Bowen thinks you're 28. I think you're 29. Maddie, what is your age again? I am 28.
Five. Wow. Wow. Well done, Maddie. And well done, you. Oh, well. Closest. Closest wins. Closest wins. What's the game? We're still pretty far off. I bet you were the right way. Okay. So then High School Musical was 2004. So then you were...
I was like, I had an older sister who was watching it. So it's like repeats coming in and she was like nine, 10. So I saw Azaka from a young age and it was like, that's what we fancy. I love it. Yeah.
Yeah. Impressionable. Impressionable. I know. Good taste. Yeah, great taste. Great taste. Maddie, thanks so much for being on. You really do have the whole lie ahead of you, kid. You're going to have an amazing time in Berlin. Good luck in Berlin. Very, very fun. Thank you so much. I'm so jealous of Maddie's life. I know. Me too. Have the best time, Maddie. Bye. Thank you.
Thank you. Have a great day. Speak to you soon. Oh, she shops vintage. That should have been a good, like that's a very Gen Z thing. It is. You're right. Damn. It's good. All right. We smashed it. You smashed it. Thank you. So did you.
Bowen, thanks so much for being on. Thanks for having me. This was a delight. Well, I feel the same. I've really enjoyed it and I could talk to you for hours and I would like to invite you back to talk about Saturday Night Live at another time as well. Bowen, we'll see you soon. See ya. What's my age again? Good. Really fun. Also today, I was desperate, desperate to talk about the Seagull boy.
who we have covered before on the show, but I saw the videos popping off on my week away and I thought, God damn it, where's a good radio show when you need it? And I needed an outlet for it. I couldn't just walk around the house talking to Bella about it. I did, but that sort of fell on deaf ears, really. But we got him on today and we got his sister and his mum. Have a listen to this. We have spoken to Cooper on The Breakfast Show before and Cooper, I imagine, is...
Well, not hungover, because he is 10. But he had a big day yesterday. Huge weekend for Seagull Boy. You might remember him from a few months ago.
Ah, the sweet sound of the seaside. But believe it or not, what you just heard wasn't a seagull. No, it was in fact a nine-year-old boy from Chesterfield. Yeah, that's Cooper who can do an incredible seagull impression. So incredible that he won the European Seagull Screeching Competition in 2024 with this winning screech. So I was really keen to talk to him today because he was defending his title over the weekend. But...
There was a twist. He was going up against his little sister, Shelby. Here's how he was feeling beforehand. I'm quite nervous. And Seagull Girl, or Sea Girl? Did she think she could win? Definitely. But I'm a bit scared. Yeah, of course. Nervous and scared you would be. They went all the way to Belgium to compete in this and try and retain the title.
And let's cross live, not live, this was yesterday, in Belgium to the announcement of the winner. Representing England, Cooper Wallace! Seagull boy returns, retains his title.
Congratulations to you, Cooper. He won a hamper full of sweets, chocolate bars, biscuits, crisps and fizzy drinks and a seagull badge. And his sister Shelby did amazingly for her first competition as well. She was placed fourth. Something to work on for next year, Shelby, but great work. The video is really joyful. They're in this sort of little pub, obviously all dressed as seagulls, doing the seagull noise. This is a competition I can really get behind. Three, two, one.
This is the winning audio. This is the moment. HE BARKS
You know what? I am not an expert, but I'm becoming quite well-versed in seagull stuff. And what I can note there, and I'm sure a few of you have noticed as well, there's a real change. There's a real confidence added to Cooper now. He is unstoppable, an unstoppable force. The way it builds. He starts with, he does a whole routine. Three, two, one.
It's so good. Cooper, I hope you feel incredibly proud. If you're able to chat on the radio later, obviously we'll always make time for you. He's 10, so he's got a couple more years, maybe three. What happens when the voice breaks? I'm worried about that. Cooper, make the most of that voice while you still can. As the voice breaks, but...
For now, Cooper, we salute you. Big day. Big day in the world of bird impressions yesterday. Ten-year-old Cooper, we mentioned him earlier, a.k.a. Seagull Boy, was one of the reasons I wanted to rush back to the breakfast show today. He was attempting to retain his title in the European Seagull Screeching Competition, and this is how Cooper got on yesterday. Baa, baa, baa, baa, baa. Baa, baa, baa, baa, baa. Baa, baa, baa, baa, baa. Baa, baa, baa, baa, baa.
He could not retain the title with that. That was amazing. I love this so much. Dressed as a seagull as well. Cooper, congratulations. How are you?
You are so, so brilliant. A huge, huge win over the weekend at the European Seagull Screeching Competition. Thank you for being back on The Breakfast Show. How does it feel to have retained your title? It's amazing. How would it sound if you were to answer me in seagull? So let me ask you again, seagull boy. How great was it to retain your title? It means a lot to you, doesn't it? Yeah. How does it mean a lot to you if I ask you again in seagull? Does it mean a lot to you? No.
Yeah, I thought so. You are amazing, Cooper. I hope you feel really proud of that. Are you in Belgium at the moment? Are you still there? Yes, we've just left the holiday house. That's so fun. So you've had a nice time? Yeah. Are you still dressed as a seagull? We're not dressed as a seagull right now. But we're just in the car getting ready to go do something for the day. That's nice. Well, I hope you have a great day today. And can I also congratulate your sister Shelby? Is Shelby there?
Yeah, Shelby said, you're ready to pass her on to you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, if she's there, it'd be great. Yeah. Shelby, she wants to talk to you. Here you go. Okay. Hi. Hi, Shelby. You're live on the radio. How are you? Good. Congratulations on coming fourth yesterday. It must have been quite nerve-wracking, but did you enjoy it? Yeah. And can you give us a little, can you answer this next question in seagull voice, please? Are you enjoying being in Belgium and being silly with your brother doing seagull noises? Yes.
I thought so and I hoped so as well. So you came fourth yesterday, Shelby. The competition must have been very stiff because you sounded great then. So does the seagull stuff, does it extend past you and your brother? Does your mum, your mum's there, isn't she? Yeah. Can you put your mum on please, Shelby? Yeah, great. Thanks. Lauren? Morning, Greg. Hi, Lauren. How are you?
I'm great, thank you. Slightly exhausted after a very, very busy day. Yeah, but what a day, what a weekend. Yeah, absolutely. I don't feel like I've come down from last year, really. It's just been one complete whirlwind of interviews and seagull day trips. But yeah, here we are again. I know, you're not sick of seagulls now, are you? Oh no, you can never be sick of seagulls. No, so I just wanted to check something. Does it run in the family? Can you do it? No.
Oh, it definitely doesn't run in the family. Yeah, well, it does between the children, but myself and my husband can't do it. Can you just give it a go now? Give it a go? Yeah, we've been trying. Really? Yeah. Go on. Oh, the kids are even chanting in the back of the car. Of course you should do it. Yeah, it isn't as good, is it? It's really just not as good. It's really not as good.
I wanted to check, really. I wanted to check that your kids weren't nepo babies and that they just inherited this from you. But they've actually done it off their own backs. That's really good of them. That's really cool. They have, yeah, absolutely. All off their own backs. Yeah. Well, let's, I mean, in the studio, I've been trying because all these videos go so madly viral, don't they, Lauren? I mean, your kids are so famous now. So I've been trying. Yeah, I can't quite get the Tom do one. No. Sophie? Sophie?
Not bad, not bad. Alex? Yeah, it's quite chickeny, that. Susanna? Go on, go. You can get that. See, that's not bad, is it, from Susanna? Susanna will see you at the competition next year. Yeah, yeah. It's just for kids, isn't it? No, it's adults as well and groups. So if you work together, you could come as a colony. Seagull colony, like a colony choir.
You can come as a colony of seagulls next year. We'll see you there. Wow. Well, look, congratulations to Cooper and to Shelby and to you for ferrying them around as well. Oh, it's a pleasure. Do you have a big costume as well or do you just sit in your normal clothes?
I sit in my normal clothes, although I think we need some Seagull supporting T-shirts next year for when we arrive. Yeah. We definitely need... We need some groups. There's 14 countries taking part and both years now we have forgotten to take the England flags. So...
That's already on my packing list for next year. It's very exciting to follow this journey. Thanks for getting Cooper and Shelby back on The Breakfast Show this morning. Can we just say a quick goodbye to Cooper? I want to just say bye to him in Seagull, if that's okay. Say bye to Cooper in Seagull. Bear with me. I will pass him back. Thanks, Cooper. Thank you. We're all going to say goodbye.
Oh, say bye everyone. All right, see you later.
Good morning. This is 22-year-old Holly, based in Poole, who works for Mercedes-Benz. Holly, welcome. I know you're panicking slightly because you're live on the radio doing a quiz, but this is what you asked to do. Do you listen every day to the quiz? I do, pretty much. Okay. Do you know what? It's all going to be fine. You realise that?
I know, I know. I was listening, I was trying to listen to the news yesterday and then I thought, well, this could turn into anything. So I thought there's no point in me trying to revise. Well, I appreciate the effort. I appreciate that you've tried. So a brand new week on the quiz. Tell us about your team. So is it a team of people that work for Mercedes-Benz?
Yeah, so we all work for Town & Mercedes and Paul, two of us are service advisors, one a parts advisor and Dan on Thursday is our manager. So we'll see how it goes. Great. And you're in lovely pool. Oh, you can be Mercedes friends. Oh, that's quite clever. I didn't think of that. Thank you. So it's the Mercedes friends this week. So Paul, nice part of the world. Is it a beautiful morning on the coast?
It is very sunny. Nice. Makes a change. So we've got a load of you this week who do that and you've been revising. And really, there's no pressure today, Holly, because all you have to do is just set the total for the rest of the week. So should we go for it? Yeah. Let's go. 90 seconds on the clock. A load of questions about stuff that happened yesterday. Here we go with yesterday's quiz.
And your... Well, let's check some dingers first. There we go. Your time will start when you give me your first answer. Here we go with question number one. What type of long race took place in London and Manchester yesterday? Marathon. Yes! And we are off. Who talked about the lifespan of her huge album from last summer, Bratz, yesterday on TikTok? Charli XCX. It is, yes. Which former member of One Direction was spotted out and about in Berlin wearing very short shorts?
Louis Tomlinson. No, it was Harry. Liverpool played Spurs in the Premier League, but who won? Liverpool. They did. Fans reacted to a video of SZA performing on tour, but what was she dressed as, a butterfly or a praying mantis? Praying mantis. No, it was a butterfly. It was National Gummy Bear Day. But what does a bear with no teeth sound like?
Very good. We'll give you two points for that. Nottingham Forest played Man City in the FA Cup semi-final, but who won the match? Man City. They did. Which singer of Disease and Poker Face performed in Mexico City? Lady Gaga. Correct. Which singer of Juice and About Damn Time celebrated her birthday? Lizzo. Correct. It was announced that which band is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Green Day or Purple Fortnight?
Green Day. It was Green Day. Which artist shared a teaser of her upcoming Cowboy Carter tour? Beyonce. Yes, a video came out of Lana Del Rey complimenting Alex Warren on his current number one single. But what's it called? Oh, I don't know. It's another word for boring. And dull. Another word for dull. It's called Ordinary. It was a new moon phase last night, but what shape will the moon be when it's full?
Yes. And that is the end of your questioning. And very, very well done. Holly, you did some great stuff there. Oh, that's a lot of pressure. Do you feel OK after that? I do know that Alex Warren song as well. That's so annoying. Yeah, because also we play it every half hour, so it's going to haunt you for the rest of the day at least. Yeah, Ordinary is the current number one. You got 11 points. Oh, I take that. It was like...
You got a couple wrong, I guess. I did give you two points for the bear. Oh, yeah, the Harry Styles one was sort of a... Yeah, 11 points is really good, Holly, for the start of the week. So there was nothing to worry about. Perfect. Thank you for being on, and we look forward to finding out what the rest of the team like as we go through the Mercedes friends this week. And have a great day in Poole, OK?
You too. Thank you so much. Thanks, Holly. Have a good day. As well as that, we got you up to date with all the latest things. Radio One's All Day Breakfast. Big weekend for sport. Sun was out. So much stuff going on. Lots of activity. Two marathons took place yesterday. London and Manchester.
It was the 45th London Marathon and the event broke the world record for the most finishes ever. More than 55,000 people completed the race yesterday in London. Loads of famous faces as well.
Former Radio 1 presenter Adele Roberts. Love Adele. She did amazingly yesterday and has now completed the big six as well. So huge congratulations to our good friend Adele. Comedian Romesh Ranganathan was running. Ollie from the Radio 1 office was running. Congratulations, Ollie. Smashed it. And Susanna's friend Georgia. Big up, Georgia.
Just a few of the celebrity names competing. So congratulations if you did that yesterday. I bet you're feeling proud, a little bit weird and very, very achy. Also, you'll be thinking, what do I do now? You'll want to do something else probably. Liverpool won the men's Premier League for the first time since 2020 yesterday as well. There'll be lots of hungover Liverpool fans listening this morning. In fact...
There was one that texted a minute ago just saying, you know what? I'm a Liverpool fan. I'm feeling a bit dusty today and I needed to hear that seagull. Thanks for sorting me out. You're welcome. Arsenal's women are through to the Champions League final after beating Lyon. That's an amazing effort from them.
Celtic won the men's title in Scotland, England's women won the Grand Slam in the Six Nations and Wrexham secured back-to-back-to-back promotions for the first time ever. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were there to watch and Rob had this to say. Give me a word to someone. Not done yet. All right, not done yet.
And just as the sun pops out... Oh, also, could be a little mini heatwave this week. Could be. Calvin Harris has just popped up to say, here's a summer banger for you. Lovely. Yes, yes, yes. Balearic. Very nice, very nice. That'll hopefully be coming out very soon. And finally, we go to CharlieXCX, who...
has been musing and pondering and wondering and feeling quite sad about Brat. So last summer was Brat Summer, famously. Charlie posted a TikTok...
Talking about Brat Summer 2. Could it happen? I was kind of joking, but also maybe serious. I don't know. But it got me thinking about how it's really hard to let go of Brat. Oh, Jolly! I watched the whole video and she was getting quite deep about it all and it was nice to hear her...
be completely honest about it all. It's like, obviously it's hard to just be like, okay, it's over now. Like I kind of want it to go on and on and on because it is who I am. She talked about how much is too much as an artist. Should you go and then come back and make people miss you and all the rest of it? And then she finished with this little bit. Yeah, I just, I kind of want it to keep going. Well, you can keep it going then. Because what I will say is,
It's not that brat to be sad about brat. Be more brat about it. And now let's try and give away some tickets to Radio 1's big weekend. BBC Radio. Sophie. Good morning and welcome to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. How are you feeling?
Oh, I'm so excited. I mean, I'm nervous, but I'm excited. Yeah, I feel a little bit jittery, I've got to be honest. And it's mainly because I'm out of sleep routine and didn't sleep a wink and was very excited to get back on the radio today and didn't want to sleep in. But I'm also worried because I don't want to...
I'm a people pleaser. I don't want to make you feel sad by calling up the radio station. So I'm going to try my best. If you need me, I will try my very best. But how are you feeling about maybe risking it if you get the first ticket? I'm definitely here for the risk, Greg. So no pressure at all. Good to know. OK, well, let's find out a bit more about yourself before we continue. So you're in Nottingham. What are you doing today?
I'm actually at work, so don't tell my boss. Well, you're broadcasting to quite a few million people, so there's a chance that they might find out. So what do you do? I actually work for a bingo company. Do you? I do. I do. I work in their communications team. Is it Mecca? Is it Bongos? What is it? It's Buzz. Buzz Bingo. Buzz Bingo. OK. Now, we've definitely narrowed it down, so your boss will definitely know that it's you on the radio. OK, so shall we do the first bit?
Yes, let's do it. Sophie, I'm going to play you a five-second clip of a song by an artist who has played Radio 1's Big Weekend in the past. As soon as the clip finishes, you'll then have five seconds to shout the artist only. I'm just looking for the artist. Don't worry about the name of the song. It's an artist who has definitely played Radio 1's Big Weekend in years gone by. Sophie, you must shout the correct artist within the five seconds, otherwise it's game over. Are you ready to play?
I am. Sophie, for one ticket to the Saturday of Radio 1's big weekend, here comes the song. Oh, no. Who is it? Shout someone, come on. It was slightly out of time anyway and also wrong. I'm sorry, Sophie. No. It was Billie Eilish. Oh, of course it was. Although I'm off the hook.
Every cloud has a silver lining. I'm sorry, Sophie, that's not ideal. But it was kind of difficult. I guess it's quite a difficult one, isn't it? I don't know. She's kind of one of the biggest artists in the world. But it's tough. It's tough in that moment, isn't it? Did it come to you sort of later or did you just have no idea? I think as soon as you said it, I was like, of course it is. Like, yeah, no brainer. Yeah.
Well, Sophie, it's been nice to chat to you. I hope you have a good day at work today. And there's more chances to win. I mean, we're going to be giving away tickets for a while yet. So you can call back. You are allowed to call. Is she allowed to call back? Yeah. Yes? Yeah. You sure? Yeah. You are allowed to call back. Oh, amazing. Good news. Have a good day today. We'll catch up soon. All right. Sophie, thank you. Thank you. Bums. Oh, boy.
Yeah, it was bad. It was bad from Sophie and then actually bad from me. I think this question's difficult. Let me play it through again. So this was the bit that I would have had to do if Sophie had gambled or risked, as we have to say, because you can't be seen to promote gambling. Can't say the word gamble in case people go, oh, yeah, I'm going to go and gamble.
Could happen. Please gamble responsibly or ideally not at all. Okay, here's the question that I would have had to answer. Hi, Greg. Sam Fender topped the UK charts with his third studio album.
But how many UK top 40 songs has he had? Is it higher or lower than four? Now, I said lower. The answer is higher. Sam Fender has had five UK top 40 songs. Only just higher. It's not like one of those things that people know, is it? That's a very difficult question. And also, go on, Tom. One of the ones that Matt got last week was...
is ten legs more than six legs? So I think you got a bit unlucky there. Ten legs more than six... I think ten legs is more than six legs. You've done it. I would have won it, yeah. Yeah, I think that's a tough question. I think that's also quite a boring question. No, it's not as fun. The legs question's fun. That's just like, have you looked at the official chart website?
And my reasoning, and I haven't, the reasoning, the reason I went for lower is because classically he's not a singles kind of guy. He doesn't get number one singles, but he gets number one albums. And I just thought, probably not. Do you want to guess what they are? 17 Going Under. Yeah. People Watching. Yeah. That's five. Play God, probably. No. Oh, it's too early. Yeah.
Hypersonic Missiles. What? I think it'll all be from album two and three. Hypersonic Missiles didn't get on it. No. Oh. Hypersonic Missiles peaked at 48. See, that's what I mean. That's the song he finishes his sets with. That's like a low, don't judge it on his chart performance because the charts don't really matter anymore.
Anyway, but our one does because it's the only chart that counts, of course. But if there was one that mattered, it is that one. And with that, we're finishing this morning's Breakfast Show podcast and I wish you a good day. Good day.
