BBC Radio 1. Radio 1's All Day Breakfast. With Greg James. Hello and welcome to the Radio 1 All Day Breakfast podcast. This is Greg James, the host of the Radio 1 Breakfast show, and we do that every day live on Radio 1, which you can listen to...

Radio 1's All Day Broadcast.

Day Breakfast. Lord, welcome back to Radio 1. Thank you so much for having me. It's a real treat to see you. Oh, same. We get an album from you every four years. You're basically the Pop Olympics, aren't you? Yes. You give us something. And we're so excited by this new record, Virgin, which we'll get into in a second. But it was nice to see you the other night at your playback. I know, same. I always love seeing you. Very exciting to sit in the room with the pop star, with the artist, playing the songs from what looked like an old iPod. Yeah.

By the way. The iPod Mini. No, the iPhone Mini. That was the dongled in. Yeah, so you dongled it in. You had the aux cable. Yeah. And you were playing tracks from the album with the producer, Jimmy Stack. And you seem to really love doing those things where you just sit and watch people listening to your music. Yeah.

Well, I actually really like this music and it's still a joy to listen to. I've definitely had things in the past where I'm like, I couldn't sit in a room with people and listen to this. But these I'm like, long may it last. Well, it was interesting because you and Jimmy were sort of, you were vibing out. Your head was nodding. Everyone's heads were nodding, but I feel like everyone actually wanted to get up. So there were no rules about that, but it felt like everyone was just...

I really wanted to get up and cut loose a little bit. I'm very happy to hear that. It's my dream. What do you make of reaction when you see people listening to the songs? What have you had so far back to you from fans? Well, I feel like I'm just getting, yeah, these really beautiful, quite vulnerable reactions, actually. I think it's that sort of music. You kind of, it hits somewhere a little bit tender for people, so...

Yeah, there have been tears flowing, I feel like. When the whole album gets played, the tears flow. When we first heard What Was That? we just thought, oh my God, this is it. This is exactly the Lorde song we all needed and wanted. Thank you. I was completely obsessed immediately. Oh, thank you so much. That's so bloody lovely of you, Brett. Come on. Well, I love it.

I said the other day actually someone pushed me for my favourite song ever and I said Greenlight stop I did yeah oh my god you know when people always say I don't know but I think it is that it's so beautiful but for similar reasons you're gonna destroy me on the morning show come on

But there's a euphoria to these songs, like Greenlight and What Was That? But also, the lyrics are incredibly raw. And you're talking a lot about femininity on this record. You're talking a lot about your body. Yeah. And it's very, very personal. Yeah. I had some trippy dreams. Close to the bone. Yeah, right. Oh, my God. When we played the album back that night...

Tough night. Wow, tell me more. I'm just dreaming about bodies and machines and x-rays and stuff. Is that what you want from us? Welcome to my brain. Is that what you want? I feel like we're in your brain when we listen to those songs. I definitely want something cool and weird to be released. I think making this album, it was important to me to let it be a little bit uncomfortable and a bit kind of gross sometimes. Sort of push into these places that

kind of hard to get to, I think. Yeah. I don't know. Well, the x-ray, which is the front cover of the album, that's you, right? That's an actual x-ray of you. I think we took six total because they're so, you know, it's like not great to just like take an x-ray of your pelvis, but I just felt like it was the right,

portrait of me to be with this album. I was like, you know, it's a little bit mystical. It's super vulnerable. It's a bit techie. And I like that it's just the essentials, like my jeans, my belt and my IUD. Did they know it was you? Did you say, hi, it's the pop star Lord here? Or did you pretend like you wanted to? Well, we said it was my art project.

Did you? Yeah. You're a college student. Yeah, I just love that project. Which it is. That's all it is. We should play a song. Should we play one of your songs? Please. Do we play What Was That? Or do we play Man of the Year? Because this seems to be a song that you're incredibly proud of. Is this the one that you're most excited about on the record? I love them all, but I do really love this song. It just came from such a...

vulnerable place for me and I feel like we captured something that I really needed captured. I mean, I'll take whatever you've got but I would listen to Man of the Year. Let's do it. Man of the Year on the Radio and Breakfast Show. More from Lorde next. Gliding through all my Gliding through Like new From my recent ego death Sirens sing overnight

Be excited for the album because I've heard eight tracks from it. The album's called Virgin. It comes out on the 27th of June. And Lorde is my special guest on The Breakfast Show. That is Man of the Year. Crazy song. Crazy. It's great to have that on the radio because it creates its own space. Because everything is very...

fully volume up, faders up, but that has just got a lot of nice space in it. Oh, thank you. When you were talking the other night about your, about writing the songs for the record, you said that that one was the one where you felt like you were a man. But in the same week, you wrote another song where you felt fully like a woman. Yeah. Yeah.

It's quite a buzzy, I know. It's a lot for you to go through when you're writing music, isn't it? It's a lot. It's a lot. And, you know, I think the fact that I was like, I'm a girl, but some days I feel like a man. Maybe that song needs to be written, even if it's not a super tidy, easily explained feeling. Felt like it wanted to exist. And with these songs now, because you've written a few of them over the course of a couple of years, do you feel like that's...

where you were two years ago or are these songs still in your head and you're living them live and that's how you still feel? A lot of them I really feel like they're still happening to me. Like that song just keeps some days I really need it, you know. Yeah, and then there's other songs that are sort of more to do with something else.

in the past but um yeah no they're they all feel very present to me and actually what was that when it came out I was like it really came back into my life I it's still working on me you know yeah so what was that is a song where as we were saying I sort of you want to lose yourself too because it's it's full of angst can you listen to stuff while you're writing other things

I can, but I find that I have to listen to something that is completely different to what I'm making. So...

With this, there was actually a lot of kind of more music that you would think that I would listen to during Soul Power. Okay. Like earthy and confident. Oh, nice. Because this album was such a like production piece and our ears were so fried at the end of the day. Okay. Well, maybe we should play something soothing. Maybe play something from... What should we play? Soothing and earthy.

I think we should play some Edison. I'm like Edison on the brain at the moment. She's so good. Great. Diet Pea, do you want to play? Let's Diet Pea. All right, let's do Diet Pea. BBC Breakfast. My partner, he loves the game. My lips reflect off his cross-culture.

Radio One's All Day Breakfast. It is the Radio One Breakfast Show and Lorde is my special guest. Lorde, should we get into a game of sit down, stand up? Yeah. Yeah.

What is going on in your phone before we do the game? So can you fire up your chosen streamer? What have you been listening to? Okay, Spotify. What's happening on Spotify? What's happening? I've been listening to Addison a lot. Addison Rae, lovely. Absolutely love her. I've been listening to...

What have I got? David Gray in here. Oh, lovely. Coming to the UK. What's your favorite David Gray song? Please Forgive Me. Insane. Insane banger. I want it to have a renaissance. I think it's overdue. I think you could do a nice cover of Please Forgive Me. Wow. Not now. Greg, this could be major. But I think you could do that and you'd bring it back. Wow. Light bulbs on. Well, let's go into the phone book. Okay.

So the game is called Sit Down, Stand Up. It has a really obnoxious theme tune. Sit down, stand up. Sit down, stand up.

Sit down, stand up. Are you sitting or standing? So we're going to go into your phone, Lord. This isn't a live jingle, Greg. Obviously. I mean all this stuff. So we're going to go into your phone, call some people. So who do you feel like you want to call? Because I've got some people in my head that I'd like you to call, but this is on you. Okay, well, we have to think about the time zone because the Americans will be asleep. That's fine. Wake some people up. But I think that...

Gracie Abrams is in Europe. So I'm like, should we try? Yes, we should. Let's do Gracie. Oh my God. Let's see what happens. Okay, Gracie Abrams would be an amazing shout. So who do you think that she'll be sitting down or standing up right now? Gracie's sitting down. Do you think? Yeah. Okay. I'll make it interesting and say standing up. Calling home. Are you sitting down or standing up right now? What? Are you sitting down or standing up right now?

I'm standing. Should I say? I'm so sorry. I'm on Radio 1 and they made me call you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I owe you. I really thought you'd be sitting down. I love you. Love you. I'll call you soon. Bye. Thanks, Gracie. Sorry, we're having some dongle issues. We're having dongle issues. I mean, that was great. She was.

I can't believe. Two standing, one nil. Okay, okay. Who's next? Sheesh. So, I think we should go again. We feel like we're on a roll here. This is really good. Okay, okay. Where do you want to go next? I'm trying to think of who's where. Okay, well, I could try Chapel Rhone. Yep. I think we should probably try Chapel Rhone. Should we give it a go? I think we probably should give it a go. Okay, okay. Yes. So, do you think she's sitting down and standing up? Oh. Oh.

I think she's sitting down. All right, I'll go standing up then. Again, it worked for me with Gracie Abrams. Let's see if it works for Chapel Roan, as we call from Lord's phone on Sit Down, Stand Up. All right, here we go. Hi, Queen. Wait, can you tell me real quick, are you sitting down or standing up right now? I'm on Radio 1. I'm doing this horrible... Horrible! ...show and they make me ask these questions. Ridiculous question.

That's the question. That was the question. Are you sitting down or standing up? I'm so sorry. Okay, Barcelona. Sit down. No, you're fine. You're perfect. I lost. I already lost. You're perfect. But if Chapel sits down, you get the point. This is sick. Wait, so is this one

It is. Unfortunately, it's on Radio 1. Chatful, hi, this is Greg James from Radio 1. Just want to say you're great and thanks for picking up. I owe you. Okay, I'll call you soon. Adios. Adios.

Amazing. It's taken years off my life. Okay, let's... Shall we play some Chapel Roan? Absolutely. You're pals with her as well? She's the coolest. This is a great gang. She is so cool. I know, there's so many just, like, lovely girls. I love hanging with them, chatting. It's a great job, it's a great life. What chapel song should we play? Uh...

I think I want Pink Pony Club. Sure. BBC. Radio 1. Breakfast. Radio 1's all day breakfast. OK, so we've had Gracie Abrams, we've had Chapel Road. This is going well. Should we just keep going for the sort of like pop girl trifecta? Let's do it. Oh.

Let's see. What have I got here? I don't know. Oh, man. All sorts. David Byrne. David Byrne. Random. We've got David Gray. Camila Cabello. Charlie. I can call Charlie. She'll be on the time zone. I wonder if you can get David Gray's number. Oh, my God. If we call David Gray right now. I reckon I could. If we call Charlie XCX, would you call Charlie and I'll try and get David Gray's number? Okay. This is so embarrassing. I wonder if I've got it.

I reckon I can find David Graves. Would you like that? I love... Have you chatted to him before? No! Oh, my God, that'd be so funny. Oh, my God. OK, you do Charlie XX, I'll try and work on getting David Graves. All right, I'm going to call Charlie. OK, cool. See what her vibe is. I think... I think she's sitting down. I think all pop stars are sitting down all the time. LAUGHTER

All right, I'll go standing. So you think CharlieXCX is sitting down? I think she's sitting down. Let's go. All right. Hello. Hi. Are you... Hi. Are you sitting or standing right now? What is happening? I'm lying down. You are? I keep...

Wait, I got it. I got it. It's a point for you. It's a point for you. Wait, what are you doing? I'm so sorry I'm on Radio 1. I'm so sorry. I know. I just had to ask you that question. It's over. I'm so sorry. What did you get? I guess that you were sitting down. I thought you were chilling. You are. I know. I'm so hungover. Sorry, Charlie. It's Greg. Greg James says hi. Hi, everyone. I'm coming.

on the air like this. Sleep, get a drip. Keep lying down. Love you. I owe you. Love you. Bye. Bye, thanks. She gives you everything you want. Not the hangover queen. That's what you want. Oh, God.

Oh, my God. Okay, so someone was sitting. You clawed a point back. There we go. Pretty good. There we go. Do you know what? This is embarrassing. I'm finding it difficult to get David Gray's number. It would have been amazing if you could, honestly. We might still. I wouldn't have believed it. So you're into this game now? Yeah. I'll be back. Drake? Is this not the message of your album? Put your vulnerabilities out there. Yes. They get met by your fans and the world. Yes. It actually makes it feel a bit better. There we go, on theme. Radio One's...

It is the Radio and Breakfast Show. It's Great James with Lorde. I've got a Charlie XCX rated question for you. Talk to me. Your album comes out on the 27th of June. That weekend is the Glastonbury Festival. Charlie XCX is performing at the Glastonbury Festival. Are you going to go and watch? You know what? Anything's possible. Okay. I did just buy a new pair of gumboots, so...

Anything's possible. We'll see. We'll see. It can be fun, eh? I've got a person which I'd love to connect you with.

Are you aware of the Sugar Babes cover? Oh, my God. Of what was that? Oh, my God. Right? Of course. Who are you calling? Siobhan from the Sugar Babes. Oh, my God, I'm going to die. Shall we do Siobhan from the Sugar Babes? Wow, what do I think she's doing? I think she's... I think... I think she'll be standing. I think she's standing too. OK, we can both go for that. She's standing. All right, here we go. Let's call Siobhan from the Sugar Babes. Hello? Are you sitting down or are you standing up?

I'm standing up. Yes! Oh, right! Siobhan, you're on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show and Lorde is here. Hi, Siobhan. Oh, my God, how are you doing? Oh, my gosh, it's so nice to meet you. Thank you so much for covering what was there. I was rocked by it. Oh, my God, I saw you be posted and we're all fangirling. I'm a super fan and I have been my whole life. Thank you for your service. Oh!

Stop it. Thank you so much. It was our pleasure. Actually, we covered Royals back in the day, so I feel like everything you write is just, like, perfect for Sugar Babes. Oh, I... It's just... I can't... You've set me down. I'm without words. Can't take it. What would be the cover back? Oh, what would I do? What would you do? Mmm... Ram Ram's. That's me. That's me. Yeah, Ram Ram would be a great one. Do it.

Siobhan, thanks so much for being on The Breakfast Show. Oh, thank you for calling at any time. Thank you. We love you. Speak to you later. Bye, guys. Bye. Oh, my God. So where are we, points-wise? So funny and crazy. You're winning. So it is 3-1. No, 3-2 to you. Who even cares? Jeez, jeez. Who even cares? You are good at this. Well, I mean...

It's a mess of a game, but it's a fun game. So Siobhan from Sugar Babes, Chapel Roan, CharlieXCX, Gracie Abrams. No word on David Gray. But look, we don't want to force that, do we? We don't want to force it. But it happens. It happens. What do you think he's doing? Do you think he's sitting or standing? I think he's sitting at the piano. I think he always is in my head. Yeah, I like that. With his lovely wobbly head. He's got a lovely wobbly head. We love him. Um...

I have no further questions. I'm off the hook. I could do an hour and a half of questions at least, but we'll let you get back to your life. But Lorde, thanks so much for coming in. Thank you so much for having me. Always a pleasure. And we are so happy you're back. The music is stunning. The world is better with a Lorde album to accompany it. And What Was That? will be forever on my...

Oh my God, I'm so angry. I need to go for a run soundtrack. That's the one. It's an honour. Flail those limbs around and just lose yourself. Lord, we'll see you soon. And maybe see you on a farm at some point soon. Maybe. Maybe. Time will tell. Shall we play the Sugar Babes cover? We must. Then we shall. A place in the city A chair and a bed The mirrors I can't see myself yet

Isn't she amazing? That is Lorde. And you can watch all of that. I believe it's going to be all put on YouTube later. An extended... I was going to say supercut, but it's not. It's an extended cut.

of that. So, yeah, good. What else did we do today? We had a quiz. We gave away some tickets to Boomtown. We got you up to date with all the latest things. And also, we continued our little game that we started yesterday, which was called Your Surname's a Mum's Name. Well, today, because of the success of yesterday, we did Your Surname's a Dad's Name. BBC Radio 1. Next to Callum. Huge success yesterday with our new game,

Your surname's a mum's name. Yes. After, in honour of you. Well, thank you. And Pete Allison. And Pete Allison. Callum Leslie and Pete Allison. Great mum names. Your surname's a mum's name.

So we celebrated that yesterday and I think today we should go for, well look, we had these examples. Morning guys, it's Chris Joyce. Hey! Joyce! That was good, also. Hi Greg, morning morning, it's Callum Shirley. Hey! And by the end of it we had a lovely bunch of ladies, didn't we? Yeah, we did. So today, is your surname a dad's name?

Are you a Lawrence, a Ray, a Dean, Olivia Dean, for example? That's a good one. Now we go in for round two. Yesterday it was your surname's a mum's name. Today, surname's a dad's name. Surname's a dad's name.

Now, I should obviously start this by saying I've sort of got that. Yeah. But I don't think it's quite good enough. We're looking for something with a bit more character than James. It doesn't feel really like a dad's name, James. I know there are many dads who will be called James. Yeah, but it's not like a classic, is it? No, it's not Roger. It's common as muck. There you go. We're looking for your Rogers. We're looking for your Gordons. Yes. We're looking for your Allens. Okay? Okay.

Or as Claire would give us... Hello, good morning. I'm Claire Enders, but my maiden name is Claire Martin. There you go. Claire Martin, great dad name. Your surname's a dad's name. Samantha! Hello, welcome to Your Surname's a Dad's Name. And what have we got? I'm Samantha Lewis.

But my boyfriend, he has a friend called Peter David. Oh, yeah. Peter David. We've done the double. We've done the double. Fantastic. Samantha, thank you. Let's crack on with line two. Who have we got? Oh, it's me. Hello, Sarah. Sarah what?

It's Gordon. Hey, we've got a Gordon. There we go. That's what I asked for. That's what we got. Your surname's a dad's name. Your surname's a dad's name. Yeah, it's a very strong one, that. That's your dad's name, isn't it? That is my dad's name, Gordon. Yes, there we go. So your dad is Gordon Leslie? Yes. Oh, my God. What a name.

That is the strongest name in the world. What a great man. He is. Gordon Leslie. He'll be listening right now. Will he? Oh, yeah. Every morning. Big up GL. We love him. Do you call him GL? Not before, no. I'll leave that then. Okay. Sarah, thank you. Sarah Gordon, have a great day. Oh, bye. Sorry, I faded you out. Say bye again. Bye. Bye. Line three, who have we got?

I'm Leslie. I'm Leslie, Ross, Campbell, John. What? Oh, come on. You get three of them. Like four? Four people on the line. Who am I talking to? So go through again. So you're Leslie. Ross. Yeah. Campbell. John. You're five and say football team, really. LAUGHTER

Wow, that's so many. Too many men, too many men. That's so many men. So many men. Your surname's a dad's name and so is your middle name and the other name as well. Your first name could even be Leslie, could be a dad's name, you know. It's four dad's names.

You're getting greedy over there, Leslie, with your four dad's names. Oh, no. Leslie Ross Campbell John. As I live and breathe. Amazing. That is a... That's my favourite. I'm afraid you've won the game, Leslie. Okay, that's super. Thank you. Thanks so much for being on.

Time now for all the latest things. Radio 1 Breakfast. All the latest things. Okay, worst case scenario, you're at a gig, you're having a great time, you're singing along, but you think that your horrible vocals just get lost in the arena. Not if you're called Laius and you were at Primavera last weekend and you were wearing those snazzy glasses with cameras on them because they record absolutely everything. He was watching Charlie XCX. Girl, you're welcome.

and was singing along to The Girl So Confusing. Tune-wise, not great. Rhythm-wise, I think fine. Also, passion-wise, great as well.

Next up, let's go to Pink Pantheress, who we know is a nerd. We know that she's a wonderful nerd as well as being a super cool singer-songwriter. So we had her on the show not so long ago and we found out that she wants to be on TV quiz shows and loves Pointless and loves The Chase. So we decided to surprise her with The Governess from The Chase, a.k.a. Anne Hegarty. And she had some...

She has some great chat with her. Are you friends with all the chasers in real life? Great question. Yeah, I mean, we all get on. You know, we're sort of hanging out together when we do Beat the Chasers. We all have our own separate dressing rooms for Beat the Chasers, but generally we're all found congregating in one dressing room answering quiz questions, generally being asked by Paul's husband. That's so cute. So she loves trivia and she also apparently loves insects. She was put to the test by TikToker Anthony Poe.

- Antony? - How well does Pink Pantheress know bugs? - That's a great question. What do we think? - This is the silk moth caterpillar, I believe. - Is he the green-legged or giant-legged? Katie did. - That was correct. - Okay, this is the Hercules beetle. - This is impressive. This is an impressive interview. - This is the Australian walking stick. - You're four out of five right now. - She loves bugs. - It's giving something like a weevil of some type, maybe like a green weevil. - Where is it from?

It is Poplin Greenweevil. Yeah, she got it. And finally, let's go to Addison Rae, who is on The Breakfast Show on Monday. A revolving door of pop stars at the minute. Monday, Addison Rae on The Breakfast Show. She was in London last night performing a secret show, a club called The Box, and Fame is a Gun was done live. Very sweaty little club, The Box. And she was strutting around looking like a great pop star.

And sounding like one too. These videos were taken by Radio 1's Jack Saunders who was in attendance and we've just stolen them. So yeah, Addison Rae, looking forward to having her on The Breakfast Show Monday from 8.30. Radio 1 Breakfast. And with that, you're up to date with all the latest things. And now a quiz and here comes Sophie. Sophie, good morning. Good morning. Welcome back to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

Thank you for having me. It's losers week on yesterday's quiz and you were one of the losers from last week's festival competitions. You tried to get tickets to download. Sadly, it didn't go your way. Are you feeling okay about it now? I'm feeling okay. I'm just really gutted that I won't see Green Day. I'm sorry about that. But look, we're having a nice time now. This is going to be good. And what's your day? Your day today is quite exciting, isn't it? What's going on?

Yeah, so I'm going to get the train to London to see my nan and we're going to go to Kew Gardens. That is a great nan thing. What a great nan activity. So it's the opposite of Download Festival as well, which I really like, going to Kew Gardens. And she must be absolutely buzzing for that. Yeah, it's going to be a good day. Yeah. And we're going to do yesterday's quiz right now. And also, garden related. You've been on this show before talking about garden stuff. Can you explain to everyone?

I have. I was Garlic Bread Girl and Joe Lysak pretended to be my mum when we were shopping at a garden centre. So today I'm going basically to an off-the-scale garden centre. Yeah, yeah, it's like the ultimate garden centre. Yeah. Um...

Joe Lysip did a feature called Rehearsing for the Worst Thing with us, and it was rehearsing a conversation between you and your mum, because I think you liked garlic bread with your chilli, but she didn't want you to have it, right? Yeah. It sounds so silly when you say it out loud. Well, all of this stuff sounds very silly when said out loud, but that's kind of the point. So we found a clip of it. This is Joe pretending to be your mum from a couple of years ago. Because I...

24-7 for you making chilli con carne and I do it real slow so it's really tender and the meat's really nice and I get the beans from Waitrose and other sides and you're always really unclogged about chilli con carne and I'm sick of it it was one of our favourites that it was amazing as your mum I do love hearing it there it's good isn't it shall we do shall we make some new memories shall we do yesterday's quiz

Yeah, I think I'm going to say hard at this. No, you won't. Come on. You're going to be fine. Let's see if we've got some dingers. Do we have some? Good. 13 points yesterday, 11 points on Monday. Here is question number one. Which fireball rapper and most famous bald man in the world did I go and watch last night?

Pitbull. Emma Raducanu won a straight sets victory in what sport yesterday? Tennis. Yes. Yesterday was National Forklift Safety Day. Which of these is not safe? Wearing a hard hat or allowing your dog to have a go in a forklift? Allowing your dog to have a go in a forklift. Yes. Which Diet P and Headphones On singer performed a secret gig in London? Pass. It's Addison Rae. Scientists revealed horses have a language. What would a horse's language sound like?

Yeah, sure. Two points for that. England's men faced off against Senegal last night in a friendly football match. But who won? Senegal. Yes. A sheep needed to help getting off what? Someone's roof or the 92B bus to Penarth? The bus? No, someone's roof. Scarlett Johansson revealed her character Black Widow will never return to what cinematic universe? Marble. Yes. A Spanish ship was found on the ocean floor.

Oh, hang on a second. I think I've just given you the answer. Yes, a Spanish watch was found on the ocean floor. It was a treasure ship. Let's continue. We'll give you the point for that. What time was it yesterday this time? 7.19. Yes. Lando Norris said he wants to do it my way for which F1 team?

Red Bull? No, it's McLaren. It was claimed that the Big Bang Theory is wrong. What was suggested instead? That we're sat inside a black hole or a submissive black hole? A black hole. Yes. It was reported that Alex Warren has made a song with Rosé. But which girl group is Rosé a member of? Pink? Nearly, yeah. It's the last two balls on a snooker table that you pop.

Black. Black. Black pink. Black pink is good. And who do you think you are was on TV yesterday, but who do you think you are? I am Sophie. That is the correct answer. And that is the end of the quiz. My friend Lucy's listening and she's going to be gutted I got the Lando Norris question wrong. Oh dear. Yeah, I'm getting notifications already. Yeah.

I didn't have a great go today on doing the questions and you made some slip-ups as well. I think it wasn't our best showing, but we had a nice time, didn't we? Oh, we had a great time. Sophie, thank you for being on today. 12 points, which is actually not bad at all and does mean that you are in with a shout of being on the final on Friday.

Oh, awesome. Okay. Have a good day. Enjoy Kew Gardens. Give my regards to your nan and we'll catch up later in the week, okay? Perfect. Sounds great. Thank you, Greg. Bye. As well as a quiz, we had a competition and it was time for Steph. Or was it? Radio One's All Day Breakfast with Greg James.

We haven't done this in ages. Everybody. Everybody.

Hey! Steph! Kai, let's go! Kai?

So, Steph, welcome to The Breakfast Show.

Thank you very much. We've heard you b-b-barring. Kai, good morning to you. How are you? Good morning. I'm good, thank you. How are you? Yeah, pretty good, thank you. Feeling pretty jolly. Feeling excited to give away tickets to Boomtown. So, Steph, you are our main caller. Oh, no.

Oh, yeah. So this is yours to lose. Kai is standing by to get his shot if you mess this up, basically. So, Steph, where are you calling from? We're calling from Ipswich. Nice. Big up the tractor, boys. What do you do in Ipswich? What do you do in Ipswich? I work in sales, so nothing really exciting. I'm sure it has its moments.

Well, maybe not. Okay, fine. That was your opportunity to say, yes, it does, but maybe it doesn't. So you'd obviously love to go to Boomtown Festival. Have you been revising the lineup? Yeah. I wasn't expecting to do this. Very spontaneous, so...

Well, it'll be an amazing little treat for the summer. It's a great festival. People love going to Boomtown. The line-up is really brilliant. It's a huge line-up. It's really, really eclectic and an amazing festival. We'll give you two tickets for that. Plus, you'll get access to Camp Orchid, which is just nice camping, basically. Kai, where are you calling from? Manchester Airport. OK, and you work there. What do you do there? Yeah, so we line the walls with the blast-proof panels.

Oh, wow. Serious work, Kai. Sort of. Yeah, it is fairly serious. But you're up for going to Boomtown Festival and have you been before? No, never. OK. Well, this could be the moment. Radio 1's Summer of Festivals.

Who are you taking, Steph, if you get the tickets? My dad. We both love drum and bass, so it would be such an amazing opportunity for us. What's your dad's name? Wayne. I hope he's listening at work. Wayne. Well, hopefully he is listening. Well, this is the thing. We've said this quite a few times over the last few months when we've given away tickets.

You sort of don't want the person to be listening because it adds pressure and then they'll just be disappointed when they go, oh, you blew it then. You were going to get tickets for us. Exactly. And Kai, we're going to keep you as reserve for now. We might need you, but if Steph gets this straight away, then we'll have no need. But let's see how it all plays out. Here we go. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to play you a clip from an artist who's performing at Boomtown Festival.

And all you need to do, Steph, is tell me who that is. You'll have five seconds to do so. It's a five-second clip of an artist, so just take your time with it and then give me the name of the artist and I will send you to that festival with access to Camp Orchid. No pressure. So you and Wayne can have a proper rave-up at Boomtown together. OK.

Did he get you into drum and bass? Yes, he did, from a very young age. So what did he start playing you when you were younger? It was more like the old school stuff, so more jungle, but we're into the newer stuff now, so... Wayne evolves, that's good. He has, he has evolved. Okay, let's focus. The clip is coming your way. Who is this?

You're saying Sean Paul? Uh, yes. All right. The answer is locked in. Oh, no. You think that's Sean Paul? I think I've messed it up. Steph? Oh, no. Steph? Oh, no. You haven't messed it up at all. Oh, my God. Really? You've done it. You got the tickets. Oh, my God.

I really hope my dad is listening right now. He'll be so proud. Big up, Wayne. We've got to call him. Let's call him. Oh, my gosh. I'm going to call him. I'm definitely going to call him. Why don't we call him next? Why don't you give us his number? We'll call him. Okay, I'll do that. Kai, thanks for hanging on. No, dude. Sorry it wasn't you today, but have a good day. Thanks for being on The Breakfast Show. See you later. Cheers. Thanks, Kai. Steph, we all good?

Yeah, all good. Actually, do you know what? We might have to have a stewards' inquiry into the competition today because someone's just said that was wrong, Greg. Actually, the answer is Sean DePaul. Oh, no. Don't scare me. I'm sorry. We had to take the tickets away from you, I'm afraid. No. Those are the rules, I'm afraid. It's Sean DePaul. Now, look, we need to call your dad, don't we? Yes, we do. Thanks for giving us Wayne's number. Of course.

Let's see. I wonder if he's going to pick up. So you think he's going to be at work currently? Yeah, so I just gave him a call and he's literally sat by his phone now. So you called him to say that a call's coming, but doesn't know why. Yeah, I just said, look, an exciting thing is about to happen. Oh, good. OK, that's good. All right. You've laid the groundwork, so he won't be expecting a call. Oh, OK, this is good. All right. But Wayne has no idea that it's the radio calling.

Hello. Hi, Wayne. You are live on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Please do not swear. I have your daughter, Steph, on the line. Yeah. Steph, what do you want to say? Dad, we're going to Boomtown. Oh, wow. Really? Yep. We're going to Boomtown. She just won tickets on the Breakfast Show, Wayne. You're going. Wow.

She was welcome, by the way. This is probably a bit of a strange morning you're having now. But yes, Steph called up and wanted to win tickets. And she said that you're the reason that she got into drum and bass and that she would take you to go to this festival with some unbelievable DJs and drum and bass DJs and stuff on the lineup. So how about that? That's great. Isn't that nice? Yeah, brilliant. Thanks ever so much. Oh, you're welcome. Boy, you've got to thank Steph, really.

Yeah, thanks, Beth. That's all right, Dad. So what sort of era of drum and bass did you get Steph into? Well, to be honest with you, it's probably like late 90s, early 2000s.

So, yeah, that's my era. And yeah, Bethany sort of grew up listening to it. She didn't have a choice, but she kind of liked it. And she's been into it ever since. Can I just stop you there a second, Wayne? Steph, are you called Beth?

So I've been calling you Steph for the whole competition. She didn't want to be rude and tell you. Okay, wait. So you called her Beth and then I thought, oh, did the phone just go funny? And it sounded like you said Beth. I thought her name was Steph. And then you just said...

And I went, did he say Stephanie or Bethany? You could have just corrected me. I'm so sorry, Beth. It's okay. No, that's okay. So I've been calling you Steph for about 15 minutes now. I didn't want to be rude. Oh, you can be. You must be rude. Please. I encourage the listeners to be rude to me, particularly if I'm getting things wrong. I'm so sorry. That's rubbish. That's okay. You made up for it with the Boomtown tickets anyway.

anyway yes yeah 100% um okay so uh in a way you have been deceiving me um

So I'm afraid the tickets are going to go elsewhere. So, all right, Beth, I'm sorry. Wayne, I'm pleased that you're on. And look, the fact of the matter is you get those tickets to Boomtown, whatever your bloody name is. So Wayne and Beth, I'm so sorry again, Beth. That's so rubbish of you. That's okay. Have a great time at Boomtown. Thanks for being on The Breakfast Show. Thank you, Greg. Thank you. See you in a bit. Bye-bye.

Yeah, big mistake, that. Big mistake. But, no, that happens. It happens. I still can't believe that she didn't say, oh, my name's not Steph. Yeah. What happened? Because before Steph, sorry, Beth, got onto the radio, she has to speak to loads of people. Yeah, she went through three layers of editorial stuff. Started with me, so I was calling, and Beth...

She called in and I answered. And I asked for her name, as we always do. And I clearly misheard Beth as Steph. And I did clarify it. I went, oh, Steph. She was very, she was so polite. She was very accommodating. I do think this is on her. I do. I do. She had loads of chances. She had three off-air chances to say, oh, by the way, it's Beth. And then had multiple on-air chances to go, by the way, Greg, you're saying, Steph, it's Beth.

And their names are quite close to each other, sonically. But that's too polite, isn't it? It's too polite. It's too British, you know. Do you think that it was going to sort of hinder her chances of winning? Yeah. I mean, if I now send off the tickets with the wrong name on... Yeah. You won them as Steph, so you have to go as Steph. The security are going to go, well...

Susanna, did you want to add anything there? Well, I was just wondering what she expected to happen when she knew that we were calling her dad. That's a great question. Good point. Yeah, because someone texted in saying, did her dad think the surprise was that she'd changed her name? No.

Hey, Wayne, we've got your daughter, Steph, here. I don't know who that is. That's a surprise to me. I didn't realise I had a daughter called Steph. I just realised. Obviously, Amy called her dad before I went. I've got Steph on the line who wants to speak to you. What's wrong with this family?

Yeah, I did call him. Don't know why I didn't correct that. They're going, who's Steph? Why am I going on the radio to speak to Steph? I don't know anyone called Steph. But my favourite thing is, instead of him trying to correct me or Steph correcting one of us, he just went on air and went, Beth. And then you didn't pick up on it. Well, we all looked at each other like, did you? It's because it sounded, if you listen back to it, as everyone just has, it sounded like the phone went funny and it went, Beth, Beth.

Like that. And it sounded like Steph or Beth. And then he went, Bethany. And then by that point, he went, he's saying Bethany here. But also it could be Stephanie. I know. It was really confusing. What's happening here? We didn't need that after a very intense but brilliant round of sit down stand up. It's all too much. Plus pitbull last night. I feel like I'm cracking up.

But anyway, that is the end of the podcast today. Thank you very much for listening. Please subscribe for more fun. Tomorrow we're going to give away tickets to... Wait, it's in my head. I know it, I know it. Radio 1 in Ibiza. And yeah, that's kind of it. I'm done. See you later.
