Dan felt a deep connection to his deer stand because it was a place of peace and quiet for him. Located 20 feet up in an ancient tree on his uncle's 800-acre farm, it offered him a sense of solitude and reflection during the hunting season, which he cherished as a family ritual.
Andy's tree stand became a deeply spiritual place after his death. Half of his ashes were buried beneath it, symbolizing his happiness there. Dan and other family members continued to hunt from it, and it became a site for reflection, communication with Andy's spirit, and a way to honor his memory.
Dan experienced a chilling encounter with Andy's spirit. He felt a sudden cold wave, saw Andy's translucent figure hovering 20-25 feet in the air, and received telepathic messages. Andy communicated that he was in a good place with loved ones and that he and Dan were okay. The encounter ended with Andy turning to reveal the trauma from his suicide, leaving Dan deeply shaken.
Dan's family reacted with respect and seriousness. His father and uncle encouraged him to share the story, and his cousin Susan found comfort in hearing that Andy was at peace. The family's acceptance and support helped Dan process the experience and integrate it into their shared history.
Nature serves as a spiritual sanctuary for Dan. He describes the woods as a place of absolute beauty and silence, akin to a sound deprivation chamber. For him, it’s a version of a church, offering peace, reflection, and a connection to the divine, which he shares with his cousin's son during hunting trips.
Dan is a hunter. His favorite place in the world is his deer stand: a platform 20 feet up in an ancient tree. One day, Dan is sitting up in the tree when he sees something that changes his life forever.
