The Chinese government stopped the Kaifeng night cycling event due to fears of it evolving into a student movement with potential political demands. The spontaneous nature of the event, combined with the presence of banners like 'Freedom and Fearlessness,' raised concerns about possible future protests or anti-government activities. The government viewed this as a threat to stability and acted swiftly to prevent any further organization or escalation.
The Kaifeng night cycling event began as a spontaneous activity by four female students from Zhengzhou who decided to ride 50 kilometers to Kaifeng to eat soup dumplings. This act of youthful spontaneity gained popularity on social media platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin, leading to more students joining the activity each weekend.
The local government initially supported the Kaifeng night cycling event, seeing it as a positive trend that could boost tourism and local GDP. They opened local attractions at night, offered free entry to students, and even arranged for special treatment like blocking motor lanes for cyclists and providing standby ambulances.
The economic concerns that led to the cancellation of the event included the fact that the students primarily only spent money on soup dumplings and did not contribute significantly to other local businesses. Additionally, the sudden influx of students caused logistical issues like hotel shortages, littering, and traffic congestion, which outweighed the minimal economic benefits.
The Chinese government's decision to stop the event was influenced by historical fears of student movements, foreign influence, and national division. The Communist Party itself rose to power through student movements and foreign support, and they are wary of similar movements that could challenge their authority. The spontaneous nature of the cycling event was seen as a potential precursor to larger political unrest.
